HOME COURT ADVANTAGE Maryland has extended its home court winning streak to 46, a program record. The Terps and Connecticut are the only two schools with current streaks ranking in the top-20 all-time consecutive home wins. UConn currently has 49. The last time Maryland dropped a game at home was Feb. 18, 2007 when Duke defeated the Terps, UConn suffered their last home court loss Jan. 6, 2007 to Tennessee, HAWKINS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK Freshman forward Tianna Hawkins was honored by the conference offi ce for her impressive game against American. Hawkins put up 20 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the third double-double of her career. The Clinton, Md., native s efforts helped the Terrapins record their second best shooting performance of the season hitting 28-of-54 (.519). ACC WINS CHALLENGE For the third time in just as many years, the ACC has topped the Big Ten conference in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The ACC tallied seven wins to the Big Ten s four this week. Maryland had the largest margin of victory during the Challenge, defeating Minnesota by 21 points (66-45). The 45 points scored by the Gophers was also the fewest points allowed by an opponent in the Challenge. The Terps also tied Duke for a conference-high seven blocked shots in the Challenge. TERPS RANKED 21ST IN COACHES POLL, RECEIVING VOTES IN AP The Terps begin the season ranked 21st in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, but fell just short of the top 25 in the Associated Press poll, receiving 114 votes to come in at No. 27. This marks the sixth straight year that Maryland has been ranked by one of the two preseason polls. TERPS PREDICTED TO FINISH FIFTH IN PRESEASON ACC POLL Maryland was picked to fi nish fi fth in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season based on a vote by the Blue Ribbon Panel at last week s ACC Media Day in Greensboro, N.C. The Terps garnered fi ve fi rst-place votes from the voting panel. North Carolina was picked to win the league while Duke came in at No.2. COLEMAN, TOLIVER GO 2-3 IN WNBA DRAFT At the conclusion of their senior seasons, Maryland greats Marissa Coleman and Kristi Toliver fulfi lled their dreams of playing professional basketball, as the they were drafted second and third in the WNBA Draft.

5 5 GAME NOTES JAN. 3 vs ST. JOSEPH S The hometown Washington Mystics took Coleman at No. 2 and the Chicago Sky snatched up Toliver with the very next selection. The duo joined former teammates Crystal Langhorne (Washington Mystics) and Laura Harper (Sacramento Monarchs) in the league. Coleman averaged 6.1 points and 2.7 rebounds per game off the bench for Washington, helping lead the team to a playoff appearance. Toliver averaged 7.6 points off the bench while shooting 45.3 percent from the fi eld and 91.3 percent from the free-throw line. MEET THE NEW CLASS Six of Maryland s 11 players are newcomers this year, as the Terps have reloaded with a top-15 recruiting class and a key transfer. Perhaps the most important addition is that of transfer Lori Bjork. Bjork sat out last season after transferring from Illinois, where she played three seasons. A grad student in kinesiology at Maryland, Bjork has one year of eligibility. Bjork will start in the backcourt and be asked to supply a calm hand and a deft 3-point shooting touch. Bjork left the Illini as the program s all-time leader in made 3-pointers and 3-point percentage, earning third-team all-big Ten honors in Also new to the program this year are redshirt freshman Jackie Nared and true freshmen Dara Taylor, Essence Townsend, Diandra Tchatchouang and Tianna Hawkins. Taylor, a McDonald s All-American from Wilmington, Del., is expected to immediately assume starting point guard duties. At 6-feet-7-inches, Townsend will be asked to provide a defensive presence in the paint. Tchatchouang comes to Maryland from France, where she was one of the top European prospects. Tchatchouang should see a lot of playing time this season, giving Maryland a versatile inside-out player on the wing. Nared gives the Terps another versatile player who can go inside or shoot from the perimeter. Hawkins is a physically-tough post player who gives Maryland some much-needed depth at the forward position. LANGHORNE NAMED WNBA S MOST IMPROVED PLAYER Crystal Langhorne, Maryland s all-time leading scorer and rebounder, had a banner year in the WNBA for the Washington Mystics in Langhorne was named the league s most improved player this season as she helped lead the Mystics to the playoffs. Langhorne improved her scoring from 4.8 points per game as a rookie to 12.0 last year and doubled her rebounding from 4.0 to 7.9 while shooting 57.4 percent from the fi eld. DON T MISS A TERPS HOME GAME IN Starting this season, all non-televised Maryland home games will be streamed online at umterps.com via TerpsTV. Links to view every TerpsTV webcast are available on the women s basketball schedule page at umterps.com by clicking on the desired game. TERPS ON THE INTERNET On Oct. 28, 2008, the Maryland women s basketball team launched its new Web site, An exciting aspect of the site is that is was built to be completely custom to the Maryland program, making it easy to maintain and ensuring that it will stay fresh and exciting. Freshman forward Diandra Tchatchouang helped lead the No. 20 Maryland women s basketball team to its third straight victory in less than a week with a career-high 22 points. The Terrapins (3-0) earned their largest lead of the night of 26 points after scoring 16 to Old Dominion s three in the opening three and a half minutes of the second half. The shots started to fall after sophomore center Lynetta Kizer hit a lay-up just 30 seconds into the final 20 minutes of play. Fourteen points of Tchatchouang s career-high performance were earned in those first few minutes. Old Dominion (0-2) wouldn t go quietly, as it engaged a full court press, slowing the Terrapin offense. The Lady Monarchs slowly chipped away at Maryland s double-digit lead, but never came within more than eight points of the Terps. Junior guard Jasmine Parker led the Old Dominion offense with a careerhigh 24 points, team-high five rebounds and four assists. Old Dominion sophomore center Mairi Buchan also scored in double-figures for the Monarchs with a season-high 11 points. The young Maryland squad faced a difficult start with the lead changing hands eight times before it began to gain momentum. Inspired by a lay-up from Kizer, Maryland went on a 17-2 run, establishing a 15-point lead over Old Dominion in the first half. Kizer earned her 10th career and first season double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Several of her teammates followed in her footsteps recording double-figure points as well. Sophomore guard Anjalé Barrett posted 10 while freshman guard Tianna Hawkins added 11. The Terrapins have had at least three players post double-digits in all three games. Freshman guard Dara Taylor dished out a career-high nine assists and added five rebounds and six points. Senior guard Lori Bjork tallied a season-best three treys in her 30 minutes of play. The Terps (3-1) were held to 16-of-52 shooting from the floor during their first road contest of the season. Maryland was unable to build momentum as Mississippi State s experienced lineup used a strong and balanced attack to keep the Terrapins trailing. Senior Alexis Rack had a career day scoring 43 points for the Lady Bulldogs (4-0). Her point total is tied for third best for the Bulldogs and was just five points off LaToya Thomas school mark of 48 points set in During the first half, the Bulldogs shot 51.4 percent to pull ahead of Maryland. Maryland still saw some good things from its young squad. Sophomore center Lynetta Kizer grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds and was just shy of her second season double-double with nine points. This was her second consecutive game with 10 or more boards. Freshman forward Tianna Hawkins had a perfect performance, hitting all three shots from the fi eld and both free-throw attempts. Hawkins also grabbed five rebounds. Freshman guard Dara Taylor earned her first start of the season and posted nine points and notched two steals. (AP) - Brenda Frese was curious to see how her young Maryland basketball team would respond to its first loss of the season. It didn t take long to fi nd out. The Terrapins built a 24-point lead against Samford in the opening 11 minutes Tuesday night and cruised to a victory. Lynetta Kizer scored 20 points on 8-for-8 shooting for Maryland, which used an early 24-1 run to take control against the previously unbeaten Bulldogs. The torrid start came two days after Mississippi State used a similar burst in an eyeopening victory over the rebuilding Terps. I thought our kids were really ready, Frese said. At Mississippi State, we just weren t ready from the tip. I thought tonight s game was going to be a big test, and I thought they did a tremendous job being ready to play. Tianna Hawkins contributed 14 points, and Lori Bjork and Dara Taylor each had 11 for the Terrapins (4-1), who won their 40th consecutive home game. Kizer, a 6-foot-4 sophomore center, nailed her only 3-point try. The only shots she missed were at the foul line, where she was 3 for 5. I ll take a 3-pointer if I m open, Kizer said. Besides that, I ll stick in the post. Savannah Hill led Samford (3-1) with 14 points. The Bulldogs return four starters from a team that last season went 22-7 and advanced to the Southern Conference semifinals. But Samford was no match for a young Maryland squad that shot 55 percent - including 7 for 10 from beyond the arc - in going up at halftime. A jumper by Emily London with 45 seconds elapsed to put the Bulldogs up 2-1, but that would be their only lead. Bjork then made three 3-pointers and a short jumper during a 16-0 run. After a free throw by Samford interrupted the spree, Diandra Tchatchouang connected twice from beyond the arc and Hawkins added a layup to make it The Bulldogs missed 12 of their fi rst 13 shots. I was really disappointed in the way we started the game and the way we responded in the fi rst 10 minutes, Samford coach Mike Morris said. I knew Maryland would be upset; I knew (Frese) would have their attention. I wasn t too happy about that Mississippi score when I saw it across the ticker. After the shoddy start, the Bulldogs regained their composure. I was pleased with the last 30 minutes of the game, when we played them relatively even, Morris said. But the game was decided in the first 10 or 12 minutes. COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - A slow start and a potentially costly injury took some of the fun out of Maryland s 41st consecutive home victory. Freshman Tianna Hawkins had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and the Terrapins beat Howard Friday night despite playing the second half without leading scorer and rebounder Lynetta Kizer, who left with a sprained left ankle. Kizer was injured with 1:21 left in the first half. The 6-foot-4 sophomore fell to the floor near the foul line and groaned in agony before being helped from the court. Kizer, who came in averaging 16.4 points and 8.2 rebounds, returned to the bench in the second half with the aid of a crutch and with her foot in a boot. I won t really know her status until (Saturday), coach Brenda Frese said. Obviously when you only have 10 healthy players, we need to remain healthy. This may be her first injury, so that s always a psychological battle - to have to deal with the first time you injure yourself. Lori Bjork scored 16 points and Diandra Tchatchouang had 14 for the Terrapins (5-1), who found themselves locked in a tie game late in the fi rst half. I think Thanksgiving dinner was a little bit too kind to us for the fi rst 30 minutes of the game, Frese said. It was a very sluggish start. Zykia Brown led Howard (1-4) with 18 points, and Saadia Doyle had 16 points and 12 rebounds. Maryland took control by closing the first half with a 13-2 run. Bjork and Kim Rodgers contributed 3-pointers to the surge, and the Terrapins held the Bison without a field goal over the final 3:40. Hawkins opened the second half with a jumper, igniting another 13-2 spurt that boosted Maryland s lead to That was more than enough to seal the Terrapins second straight win after a 29-point defeat at Mississippi State. The Bison scored the game s first two baskets and used a 9-3 run to take a lead midway through the first half. It was 18-all before Bjork hit a jumper and a 3-pointer, but Howard answered with two straight field goals to keep the pressure on. When you re a freshman and you have the chance to get home for a day and eat, it s hard to come back and leave your family, said Bjork, the only healthy senior on the squad. A short jump shot by Kizer put the Terps up 28-26, and Maryland never relinquished the lead.
