The last time Duke was not ranked in the top 10 was Nov. 19, Duke is all-time in season openers, including a 30-2 mark under Coach K. The Blue Devils have won 12 straight season openers. The last loss in a season opener came in 1999 when Duke opened the season with a loss to Stanford in the opening round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in New York City. The Blue Devils have won 30 consecutive home openers and are 31-1 in home openers under Mike Krzyzewski. Duke s last loss in a home opener was a double-overtime defeat to Vanderbilt on Nov. 28, Duke returns 45.8 percent of its scoring from last season, including three double-figure scorers in Seth Curry (13.2 ppg.), Ryan Kelly (11.8 ppg.) and Mason Plumlee (11.1 ppg.). Senior Seth Curry is averaging 15.0 points per game in his two season-opening games at Duke. He is 8-of-10 from three-point range in the two contests. Senior Mason Plumlee is the leading returning rebounder in the ACC with 726 career rebounds. He also has 17 career double-doubles to lead all ACC returnees. Seth Curry has made 64 three-point fi eld goals in each of his two seasons at Duke. He enters the season with at least one made three-point fi eld goal in 14 straight games. Curry missed a significant portion of the preseason while resting a lower right leg injury. Freshmen Amile Jefferson (13.0 ppg) and Rasheed Sulaimon (16.0 ppg.) combined to average 29.0 points per game in Duke s two exhibition contests. 3 Tale of Two Exhibition Games Duke won its two exhibition games in very different fashions with an outstanding offensive effort in a win over Western Washington and a dominating defensive outing in a win over Winston-Salem State. vs. Western Washington Mason Plumlee (22), Ryan Kelly (22) and Rasheed Sulaimon (20) each topped the 20-point mark in the win over the Vikings. Sophomore Quinn Cook and freshman Amile Jefferson each added 13 points to give Duke fi ve double-fi gure scorers in the contest. Duke shot 57.6 percent (34-of-59) from the fi eld in its fi rst exhibition game, including a 17-of-28 (.607) effort in the second half of action. The Blue Devils attacking offense generated 40 free throw attempts against the Vikings. Duke fi nished the game 31-of-40 (.775) from the charity stripe with Ryan Kelly leading the way with a perfect 7-of-7 effort. Duke scored 50 or more points in each half of play to surpass the 100-point mark for the fi rst time since a win over Western Michigan on Dec. 30, vs. Winston-Salem State Mason Plumlee led three double-fi gure scorers with 19 points in the win over the Rams. He was 7-of-7 from the fi eld in the contest and added 10 rebounds and two blocked shots. Freshmen Amile Jefferson and Rasheed Sulaimon combined for 25 points and eight rebounds in the win. Duke limited Winston-Salem State to 29.3 percent (17-of-58) shooting, including a 5-of-30 (.167) showing in the opening half of play. The Blue Devils forced 19 turnovers, while only allowing 17 made fi eld goals in the contest. Duke posted a 29-4 edge in points off turnovers and controlled the key with a advantage in points in the paint. Duke s offense was hindered in the game by 1-of-17 shooting from three-point range. NCAA All-Time Wins Leader Mike Krzyzewski is the winningest coach in NCAA Division I history with 927 career victories. He passed mentor Bob Knight with a win over Michigan State at Madison Square Garden Nov. 15, With 854 wins as the Duke head coach, Krzyzewski is currently fourth all-time in wins at one school. He is 23 wins shy of passing Adolph Rupp on the list. Krzyzewski is the winningest coach in NCAA Tournament history with 79 tournament wins. Thornton is a tenacious defender with 22 career starts and three double-figure scoring games. He has also shown a knack for making clutch baskets despite not being a primary scoring threat. Redshirts Ready to Play Redshirt freshmen Alex Murphy and Marshall Plumlee are poised for big seasons after both players were redshirted a year ago. Murphy is a terrifi c athlete with the ability to score from the perimeter or by slashing into the paint. He gained valuable game experience over the summer while competing for the U-20 Finnish National Team.
