1 ABOUT BLOOMSBURG Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania s State System of Higher Education, is a fouryear coeducational public university founded in Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education. Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 19 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff. About 90 percent of Bloomsburg s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it s a busy place with more than 160 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center. The university s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television. The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town. The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, Wilkes- Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC. Enrollment Total enrollment is over 8,040, with an average incoming SAT of 1070 and class rank in the upper 25 percent; Bloomsburg admits one in seven applicants and has a four-year retention rate significantly higher than the national average. About 60 percent are women and 10 percent are non-traditional. About 90 percent of Bloomsburg graduates are quickly placed in their chosen fields. Bloomsburg Facts Degrees Bloomsburg University offers 63 baccalaureate degrees,18 master s degrees and a joint doctoral degree in elementary education in cooperation with Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Financial Aid About 70 percent of all students receive some form of financial aid; average amount of aid is $10,026 per year. Faculty With approximately 1,000 employees, Bloomsburg University has 383 full-time faculty, 70 percent of whom hold doctoral degrees and 72 percent of whom are tenured. The staff is organized into four divisions: Academic Affairs, Administration, Student Life and University Advancement. Governance is through the State System of Higher Education s Board of Governors and through the university s Council of Trustees. School Colors, Mascot The school colors, originally lemon and garnet, have been maroon and gold since the 1920s. 3 HEAD COACH PAUL PAYNE Paul Payne will begin his 11th year at the helm of Bloomsburg. Prior to coaching the Huskies, Payne was the head soccer coach at the University of Scranton. Payne s 10-year record as head coach at Bloomsburg is now He is the all-time leader in school history in career victories for men s soccer. During his tenure as head coach, Payne has led the Huskies to three PSAC playoff berths. While coaching at the University of Scranton, Payne guided the Royals to a record of and four Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) playoff berths. He was named the 1997 MAC Coach of the Year after leading Scranton to the MAC Freedom League championship. A standout collegiate player at Kutztown University, Payne immediately moved into the coaching ranks upon his graduation. He was head coach at both Conestoga and Wallenpaupack high schools before becoming an assistant coach with the University of Scranton men s and women s teams. In 1995, he was named head coach of the Royals men s team. Payne serves as a Senior National Staff Coach for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) as well as the Region II Technical Director for the NSCAA. He holds a U.S.S.F. A License and a NSCAA Premier Coaching Badge. Payne will serve as vice-president of Education to the NSCAA before assuming the presidency in 2011.(The NSCAA is the largest single sport THE PAYNE FILE Overall PSAC coaching association in the world with over 23,000 members). In addition, as a member of the Division II Men s Soccer Committee, Payne serves as Chair of the Northeast Region, and sits as one of eight on the national committee overseeing D-II Men s Soccer and their national championship. In addition to all his coaching and work with the NSCAA, Payne has announced the development of Red Card Cancer, a program designed to bring awareness through the soccer coaching community in the fight against cancer. Red Card Cancer will be an annual event to be held the first Saturday of October (Oct. 3 this year) and will feature the men s and women s soccer teams of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference joining in the battle to fight cancer. On the day of the game, teams will wear specially designed t-shirts during pregame warmups that will feature the Red Card Cancer logo. A collection will be taken up during the game for the American Cancer Society. Coach Payne has also had numerous coaching articles and tips published in soccer journals and web based newsletters. 4 ASSISTANT COACH RYAN BAXTER Baxter is a former University of Rio Grande player. He completed his college soccer years with the #1 ranked soccer program in the nation. He was first team All- Conference and won honors at the regional level in his junior and senior years. Prior to coming to the USA, Baxter played for Burnley FC at youth level, as well as representing his country at under level. He later went on to play in the prestigious Lancashire Academy before accepting a scholarship offer in the United States. Baxter is an experienced coach, who served as a camp director for the David Beckham Academy in Los Angeles in He will be pursuing a Masters in Exercise Science at Bloomsburg. Bloomsburg University men s soccer coach Paul Payne has announced the development of Red Card Cancer, a program designed to bring awareness through the soccer coaching community in the fight against cancer. Everyone has been touched in some way by cancer, said Payne. Those of us in soccer community have lost some influential people the last few years. Joe Bochicchio, a long time coach of the women s program at the University of Scranton, and Charlotte Moran, who was the president of the Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association (EPYSA) and was one of the most active organizers for girls and women s soccer in America, have been taken from us by this dreaded disease. It is time we help in the fight and finally hand a red card to cancer. Payne hopes to grow this program into a national event in the next few years. It would be so rewarding to see the first Saturday in October set aside for the Red Card Cancer event, Payne continued. 6 2009 PREVIEW Defense wins games. It has been that way in sports for as long as scores have been kept. If that is the case then the Bloomsburg Huskies are looking at a banner season. With the core of last year s defensive unit all returning, head coach Paul Payne has a great foundation on which to build his team, which last year showed a five-game improvement from the year before. Led by cocaptains Tom Pfender and Chris Chestnut, the Huskies limited opponents to just 1.4 goals per game a year ago. Also returning are All-PSAC performers Mike Jones and goalie David Leindecker, part of a unit that allowed more than two goals in a game in just four times. Bringing an added element of experience and atlent in the back will be Senior Mike McGee, Junior Marcus Valeriano and Sophomore Matt Kaupp. Pfender, who is trying to come back from off-season surgery, is a no-nonsense player who provides a lot of leadership for the Huskies. Chestnut, whose father played for the Huskies, is like a coach on the field with a great understanding of the game. The strength of our team is our defense, said Payne, who will be entering his 11th year on the bench. We have a core group of players that is solid on the defensive end of the field, plus a returning keeper (Leindecker) who was all-conference and a backup that (Erik Solymar)who is ready to push for some playing time. Where we need to be more consistent is on the attacking side of the ball. The Huskies return top scorer Eric Simonds, who scored five times; Jones, who had three goals, and Tom Kovack, who had two goals and two assists. Simonds has the ability to make an impact, while Jones is a threat for the Huskies anywhere on the field, while Kovack is a strong player with both attacking and defending skills. But, it will be the newcomers who Payne is excited to see. We have a strong recruiting class of forwards in Alex Ruhfass, Bryce Shaffer and Tyler Phillips who will be a factor for us on offense this season, said Payne. They are strong and quick and have the skills to put the ball in the net. Ruhfass was a four-year starter in high school and a two-time all-league selection. He also spent two years at the Italian Residence Academy in Italy honing his skills. Shaffer was a two-time first team all-mid Penn Keystone Division selection, while Tyler Phillips was first team all-league this past year and finished his career with 100 points. In addition to those three players, we are bringing to camp two other players, Brian Savage and Tom Natter who also are strong in the open field. All of these players will make us better right away. As for the Huskies schedule, once again it is tough one. Not only do the Huskies have to face PSAC East rivals in East Stroudsburg, West Chester, Millersville and Shippensburg, the team will also face the three top teams in the PSAC West in California, Mercyhurst and Slippery Rock. Every game in the PSAC is a close one, Payne continued. We dropped two, one-goal games to East Stroudsburg, which qualified for the PSAC playoffs, and another one-goal game to Slippery Rock, which also made the PSAC playoffs. That s how close play is in our league. There is not much difference between the teams. That s why defense is so important. It wins games.
