3 Season Preview Albright women s lacrosse head coach Jen Willis brings the program s first senior class into the 2015 season with high hopes for success. Senior midfielder Meghan Wilson and the defense pair of Sarah Nale and Kelsea Guckin have been with the program from the start, and look to lead Albright to its first postseason appearance after narrowly missing out in Meghan Wilson, Sarah Nale and Kelsea Guckin have played intricate parts up to this point, said Willis. They started this thing, and they are looking to leave with a MAC championship. We were one goal away from the conference tournament last season, and to have your first senior class end with a championship would be special. They are hungry and it s contagious from the top down. The Lions finished the 2014 season with an 8-9 overall record and tied for fourth in the standings with a 3-4 conference record. The red and white won its final three games of the regular season, but were eliminated from the Commonwealth Conference Tournament by goal differential as they finished in a three-way tie for fourth place with Alvernia and Widener. Albright brings a deep, talented and veteran squad into the 2015 season with nine returning starters from last year s team, including three all-conference performers, both its goalkeepers and six of its top seven point scorers We really don t have the one kid who steals the show, which makes you a threatening team. Willis said. Our depth makes it hard for teams to defend us. You can t just face guard Amanda Smith and take her out of the game, because we have six others out there that are give you a hard time. Junior midfielder Amanda Smith returns to lead the Lions in Smith earned First Team All-Commonwealth Conference honors in Smith led Albright in goals with 48 and points with 56. She also topped the team in draw controls (102), ground balls (62) and caused turnovers (31). Smith is joined by Wilson, who has started all 40 games in program history, earned Second Team All-Commonwealth Conference accolades last season after scoring 29 points on 17 goals and 12 assists, while adding 31 ground balls, 73 draw controls and 18 caused turnovers. Speedy junior Rebecca Sartorio adds versatility to the talented crew, and has scored 14 goals in each of her first two years, and sophomore Mariah Cullen scored 16 goals and had five assists for 21 points. The attack is led by junior Erin Farrell who was third on the team with 31 goals and 7 assists for 38 points, and holds the Albright record with 61 goals scored as a freshman. Farrell is joined up front by junior Tori Meyer who added 12 goals and 7 assists for 19 points, and sophomore s Danielle Carey, who makes the move to the attack position from the defense a year ago, and Jacqui Montague. On defense, Nale, who has started in all 40 games in the program s first three seasons, compiled 25 ground balls and was tied for second on the team with 18 caused turnovers in She is joined by Guckin, who has made 39 appearances for Albright, and junior Commonwealth Conference Preseason Poll 1. Stevenson (5)...61 pts 2. Messiah (4)...57 pts 3. Lebanon Valley...52 pts 4. Alvernia...38 pts 5. Arcadia...33 pts 6. Albright...31 pts 7. Widener...27 pts 8. Lycoming...15 pts 9. Hood...10 pts Nicole Klusewitz who was a Second Team All-Commonwealth selection last season. Klusewitz picked up 30 ground balls, caused 17 turnovers and had 17 draw controls as a sophomore. Junior Emily Hutson and sophomore Haley Joyce are both expected to see significant time between the pipes for Albright in Hutson, who has made 32 appearances with 29 starts, and has recorded 16 career wins in her first two seasons. She finished the 2014 season with a 7-6 mark and notched wins in her final two games of the season. Joyce, who made 13 apperances and three starts as a freshman, picked up her first victory in a 15-6 triumph over Lycoming. That win ignited the Lions three-game winning streak to end the season. The Lions were voted to finish sixth in the 2015 Commonwealth Conference Preseason Poll, a point that was not lost on Willis. We have to prove it on the field, but it adds fuel to the fire, said Willis. We are looking forward to proving them wrong. Albright opens the 2015 season on Wednesday, Feb. 25 when it hosts Eastern University at 4 p.m. inside Shirk Stadium.
