5 2009 SEASON PREVIEW The 2009 edition of Bloomsburg University women s soccer brings back a strong foundation of experience and leadership and will look to add several new players into the mix as they compete for a PSAC championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament. Finishing with a record of , the Huskies qualified for the PSAC and NCAA playoffs in 2008 and after finishing second in the PSAC East with a conference record of They ll look to use that experience to work towards their goals this season. Overall our goal is to focus on the details of our game, be prepared and take each game one at a time, said head coach Sandy Dickson. The team had a great spring and has been building on last year s performance. I feel if we can continue to improve and come together we will compete with the best. To improve on last year s results, the Huskies will rely on eight returning starters, veteran experience and several talented incoming freshmen. The blending of these components will be extremely important right away as the Huskies open against two nationally ranked opponents in C.W. Post and West Chester. DEFENSE Sophomore Frances Nicoletti came out of last year s preseason camp as the starter in goal for the Huskies and didn t disappoint during her first year on campus. She played every minute in goal, recording a 1.12 goals against average and six shutouts. Junior Vicky Ziolkowski and sophomore Marissa McDowell both return armed with the confidence to step on the field when called upon. The backline is again a strong point for the Huskies, as they return a trio of All-PSAC performers in seniors Eileen Alexander, Angela Brown and Kristine Preski. Alexander has helped anchor the defense since her freshman year, earning second team all-conference honors in 2006 and Brown earned her first All-PSAC selection last year, helping the Huskies limit opponents to just 23 goals scored for the season. They ll be joined by junior Kristine Preski, a two-time first team All- PSAC selection, who also has some offensive skills having scored four goals and to with two assists last season. Seniors Erin Coulahan and Meg Lynch and Cincinnati transfer Aimee Bux add depth and experience to the defense. As a group, their communication is solid and their ability to read the game has developed nicely since the start of camp. Look for freshmen Caitlyn Raynes and Lauren Stedman to develop this fall. Raynes brings a great deal of good club and high school experience to the Huskies. MIDFIELD Senior captain Kelly Modes, a first team All-PSAC selection each of her three years on campus, returns. She is the leading returning scorer for the Huskies, netting seven goals to go along with three assists. The four-year starter can dominate and can change the face of a game with her intensity and desire. Returning alongside Modes are junior Ali McCrossin and sophomore Katie Walczuk. McCrossin started all 20 games a year ago after playing in five games as a freshman. Walczuk brings back valuable experience as well, appearing in 19 games during her first year, starting nine of them. Together they have developed into a real force in the midfield for the Huskies. Keep an eye on Kim Turner, a speedy sophomore who will find herself at both the midfield and forward spots. FORWARDS Junior Kelsey Stoka is looking to return to action this fall, just four months after surgery due to an amazing rehabbing effort during the summer. Her 13 points last season and crafty play helped earn an All-PSAC East second team selection. Sophomores Shannon Andersen and Lauren Mento and freshman Alexandra Davis will be battling for time up front for the Huskies Wom. Soccer Guide.indd 5 9/22/09 1:13 PM
