6 2009 PREVIEW Even though the Bloomsburg field hockey team lost seven starters from last year s NCAA Division II national championship, the cupboard is not bare for Huskies head coach Jan Hutchinson. Bloomsburg returns seven of the top nine scorers from a team that set an NCAA Division II record with 161 goals scored as it looks to win its fourth straight title for the second time in school history. Despite losing seven starters from last season, two of them All-Americans, we still have a strong offensive group of players returning, said Hutchinson, who has won 15 national championships in her illustrious career. All our players look improved from last year with better skills and better game sense. We have the potential to be a big scoring team. However, this is a new year and a new team, Hutchinson said. We are putting together a new defense and will have a new starting goalie this season, so there will be a transition period for us. Everyone needs to get used to playing with each other. OFFENSE The Huskies return a very talented and deep group of forwards who all have lots of big game experience. Among the key players up front for the Huskies will be All-American Maggey Bloskey, Ashley Miller,, Breanne Tobin, Amanda Riley, Lindsay Danz, and Aimee Sgarlatt. Bloskey had a big game in the NCAA semi-finals when she netted three goals in the Huskies win over Shippensburg. She finished with a career-high 21 goals and was third on the team in scoring with 45 points. Miller finished with 12 goals and added six assists, while Riley had an impressive freshman season with 12 goals and two assists. MIDFIELD The Huskies will once again be strong in the middle of the field led by All-American Chelsea Due. There is not much left to be said about the play of Due that has not already been said. A catalyst for the Huskies offense with her play in the middle, Due scored 13 goals and assisted on seven others last year. She will anchor the middle of the field along with Julia Rush, Kara Stahl, Amanda Deloy and Rachel Zerfoss. goals scored, but do return several players who saw a lot of time at the position a year ago. Among the key players this season will be Kacy Friend, who made 12 starts last year; Aubrey Carman who made eight starts; Madison Schoch, Rebecca Sherman, and Betsy Renn. GOALIE While the Huskies graduated All-Conference goalie Alison Ziants, her backup, Caitlin Koczynski was solid as a reserve posting a goals against average of 0.32 in 437 minutes of work. Koczynski also posted two shutouts a year ago and is ready to step into the position on a full-time basis this year. NEWCOMERS Bloomsburg always seems to be loaded with many talented freshmen and 2009 is no different. A strong group of newcomers will be looking to keep the Huskies long tradition of winning alive. Among the players to watch out for are red-shirt freshmen Kara Stahl, a midfielder and Niki Leone, an attack player. Also, freshmen Amber Aulenbach, Nicole Bruce, Lauren McGinley, Alexis Weber, Kristin Witmer and Michelle Cragle. OVERALL Our team goals remain the same, said Hutchinson. We want to play well enough during the regular season to qualify for both the PSAC and NCAA championships and hopefully be fortunate enough to win those titles. I know, however, that we will need time to gel as a unit. The PSAC is once again a tough league with teams like Shippensburg, Kutztown, East Stroudsburg and IUP all with strong teams, Hutchinson said. We will have our work cut out for us once again. DEFENSE The Huskies lost quite a bit from their defensive unit a year ago that limited opponents to just BU Field Hockey Guide.indd 6 9/22/09 12:49 PM

Bloomsburg dominated the second half of play with 10 shots on goal, while not allowing IUP a single shot on net. After a series of seven penalty corners, Maggey Bloskey was able to convert off an assist from Samantha Kropa. The Huskies put the game away with two more goals in two minutes of play. Breanne Tobin knocked the first one in off a scramble in front of the net, while Vanartsdalen tipped one in off a Whitney Miller shot from the top of the circle. Vanartsdalen was named the 2008 PSAC Most Valuable Player with four goals and one assist in the tournament. Head coach Jan Hutchinson earned her 15th PSAC title and is now in her field hockey coaching career. NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS Semi-Finals Bloomsburg 3, Shippensburg 2 (OT) Nov Maggey Bloskey scored three goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lead Bloomsburg to a 3-2 victory over Shippensburg in the semi-finals of the 2008 NCAA Division II field hockey tournament. Bloomsburg, 23-1, will face UMass-Lowell, a 3-2 winner over Bentley, in the championship game, where the Huskies will attempt to win their third consecutive NCAA championship. Bloomsburg took a 1-0 lead at the 8:23 mark of the first period when Bloskey scored off of a pass from Chelsea Due to give the Huskies a 1-0 advantage. Shippensburg would respond 10 minutes later when Kim Davies scored off of a pass from Kristina Taylor to tie the game at one. It would stay deadlocked at 1-1 until 12 minutes into the second half, when Shippensburg s Dani Haas scored off of an assist from Carolyn Swift to take a 2-1 lead. With under 10 minutes to go and trailing by one, Bloomsburg s Jamie Vanartsdalen found Bloskey for her second goal of the game, tying the game at 2-2 with just over nine minutes left to play. Bloomsburg had an opportunity to score on a penalty corner with under 30 seconds remaining in regulation, but the Red Raiders held their ground and forced the overtime period. Bloskey then scored the game winner 12 minutes and 27 seconds into the overtime on a pass from Due, lifting the Huskies back into the championship game. Allison Ziants led the way in goal for Bloomsburg, recording one save while facing six shots on goal. Bloomsburg out-shot the Red Raiders 16-6 on the game. Shippensburg was led by Amanda 19 Houser, who made four saves in goal. NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS Championship Bloomsburg 6, UMass-Lowell 2 Nov Jamie Vanartsdalen scored three goals and assisted on one other to lead the Bloomsburg University field hockey team to a 6-2 win over UMass-Lowell (UML) in the 2008 NCAA Division II Field Hockey championship. The title was the third straight for the Huskies and the sixth in the last seven years. It was also the 12th NCAA D-II title in school history and the 15th national field hockey title overall. The Huskies stormed out of the gate and dominated play in the first six minutes of action. Bloomsburg got on board first just 1:20 into the contest when Vanartsdalen took a pass from Samantha Kropa and scored to make it a 1-0 game. Less than a minute later, on a penalty corner, Vanartsdalen shot was saved by the River Hawks Amy Carbon. However, Maggey Bloskey was there to get the rebound and score to make it 2-0. The opening flurry continued three minutes later when Vanartsdalen scored on a rebound off a shot by Bloskey putting the Huskies in control. The River Hawks, though, kept their composure and got on the board at the 8:49 mark when Missy Seeley scored from a Molly Clay assist off a penalty corner, the second of two consecutive corners for UML. UML and the Huskies then fought for field position much of the next 25 minutes before the River Hawks cut the deficit to 3-2 late in the first half off a penalty corner. Jaci Moulton took a centering pass from Seeley and drilled it in to the back of the cage giving the visitors new life. However, that would be as close as the River Hawks would get in the game. To start second half play Bloomsburg s Ashley Miller redirected a shot from Vanartsdalen just 35 seconds in the period to put the Huskies up 4-2. From there the Huskies midfield and defense prevented the River Hawks from getting off any shots in the second half. The Huskies closed out the scoring with Vanartsdalen scoring at the 50 minute mark to make it 5-2 with Chelsea Due closing out the scoring with an assist from Kropa off a penalty corner. Named to the All-Tourney team were Vanartsdalen, Kropa, Due and Whitney Miller from Bloomsburg; Seeley, Ashley Smith and Michelle Harrington from UML; Alyssa Sliney and Courtney Bartlett from Bentley and Kim Davies and Amanda Howser from Shippensburg BU Field Hockey Guide.indd 19 9/22/09 12:50 PM
