2 Since its founding in 1855, William Paterson University has grown to become a comprehensive, public, liberal arts institution committed to academic excellence and student success. Accredited by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges, it offers 30 undergraduate and 19 graduate degree programs as well as professional development programs through its five colleges: Arts and Communication, the Christos M. Cotsakos College of Business, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science and Health. Nearly 11,000 full- and part-time students from a diversity of backgrounds are enrolled at the University. Occupying a 370- acre, wooded hillside campus, the University is located in the hills of suburban Wayne, New Jersey, within an hour of the ocean, the mountains, the Meadowlands, and New York City. As a state-supported institution, the University offers students the value of a first-rate education at a fraction of the cost experienced by those at private colleges and universities. It also offers a wide variety of student activities, modern on-campus housing, and the most up-to-date educational facilities. In addition, the Pioneer athletic programs have produced a proud tradition. William Paterson has 17 athletic teams which compete in NCAA Division III and the New Jersey Athletic Conference intercollegiate sports: Baseball, Men s and Women s Basketball, Men s and Women s Cross Country, Field Hockey, Football, Men s and Women s Soccer, Softball, Men s and Women s Swimming, Men s and Women s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field, and Women s Volleyball. The baseball team won national championships in 1992 and 1996, men s track and field standout Rob Hargrove took the 2002 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field 200-meter dash title, the men s basketball team claimed three consecutive NJAC titles ( ) and played in the 1999 and 2001 Final Fours, and the softball team captured the 2003 New Jersey Athletic Conference championship.

The expectations are higher, said seventh-year coach Keith Woods, whose Pioneers went (7-2 NJAC) and finished second in the conference. I think with our experience level being as high as it s been since 1999 when we had eight seniors and finished 15-4, we feel good about our chances. Up front is where the Pioneers possess three of the most potent scorers in the NJAC in seniors Erin Finn, Kat McPhail and Amy Wieszun. Wieszun, a first-team All-NJAC and second-team National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) second-team All-Mid Atlantic Region selection, tied for the team lead with seven goals and also doled out seven assists. Finn (16 points) and McPhail (17 points) Amy Wieszun Kat McPhail 3

6 2003 PREVIEW also scored seven times apiece, combining to capitalize on several opportunities in the clutch as the Pioneers went over their final 10 games. We have three good goal scorers coming back and offensively it s a nice luxury to have three players score seven goals apiece, Woods said. Adding depth at forward will be junior Kelly Cruise (3 goals, Kat McPhail 2 assists), although she is slated to start at outside mid. Cruise was a second-team All-NJAC selection last season. Also look for freshmen Meghan McDermott and Caitlin Higdon to contribute. Since Woods likes to employ different formations such as the or 4-3-3, look for Wieszun to play some center midfield when the Pioneers use a Senior Sarah Stowe (2 goals, 2 assists) continues to shine as a strong two-way player with a powerful shot. Sophomore Denise Spina will push the veterans for playing time after a solid freshman campaign, as will freshmen Lea Mullady, Lauran Marotta and Melissa Boka. Mullady is a dynamic playmaker who could open at center mid should the Pioneers use the Along the backline, seniors Lindsey Birdsall and Allison McCarthy lead the way. A sweeper, McCarthy scored a career-best five goals last season, many off direct kicks that displayed her strong and Erin Guidera accurate shot. She is also a good help defender. Birdsall (2 goals) has been consistently good since becoming a full-time starter as a sophomore, and has earned honorable mention All-NJAC honors the past two years. Junior Erin Guidera is a tough defender who will start at back. If the Pioneers utilize the 4-4-2, Stowe could slide back and play stopper. Freshman Laura Conte could contribute immediately along the backline, while Higdon could also play back if needed. Finally, sophomore Meaghan Koppel quickly answered any questions about being the goalie of the future by clearly making her mark last season. Koppel finished with seven shutouts and combined on three others while posting a 1.24 goals against average. The secondyear standout, already fourth in shutouts on the career charts, will be backed up by freshman Erin Reene. Meaghan Koppel 4

7 COACHING STAFF KEITH WOODS Head Coach Year: Seventh Record: Alma Mater: Trenton State 92 Degree: B.S. in Political Science On any given day, sated on a couch and chairs throughout the room are Keith Woods players. Some of them are watching game film of an upcoming opponent, others just passing the time by trading one-liners with their coach. Clearly, they are enjoying the camaraderie that exists within these walls. Quite simply, this is why Woods is one of the most successful women s soccer coaches in the East Region. More than just his ability to talk about tactics, the seventh-year coach is adept at relating to his players. He can laugh with them one minute, then do an about-face and tell his players how to guard against an opposing charge. He also has a proven ability to develop talent. Along with his brother Brian, the Pioneers men s soccer coach, Keith Woods has helped develop the University s women s soccer program. He served as an assistant coach for three years when the program first became a varsity sport in 1994, before being handed the reins in Since then, the Pioneers have known nothing but success. They reached the NCAA Division III playoffs in 1997 and 1998, reached the Sweet 16 in 1997,and finished both seasons nationally ranked. In 1998, they captured the New Jersey Athletic Conference championship and commenced the regular season with a record. For his efforts, he captured the WOODS ON THE RECORD Year Record Highlight(s) NJAC Finals NJAC Champions NJAC Coach of the Year Undefeated Regular Season NCAA Division III Sweet 16 School Record for Wins TOTAL

8 COACHING STAFF NJAC Coach of the Year award both seasons. Prior to his coaching career, Woods was an All-NJAC player for Trenton State (now The College of New Jersey) and served as a captain on the 1991 team that played for the Division III national championship. He also starred at Belleville High School. Woods also has a track record of recruiting student-athletes who are equally adept in the classroom and on the pitch: 12 of his players finished the Spring semester with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. In addition to his soccer duties, he also served as an assistant women s basketball coach for nine years and stepped in as acting head coach in He resides in Wayne. KATHLEEN SINRAM Assistant Coach Year: Sixth Alma Mater: William Paterson 98 Degree: B.S. in Biology and Secondary Education Having been around the program since its inception as a varsity sport in 1994, Sinram has been instrumental in all of the successes attained on the pitch. She played in the Pioneers first NCAA women s soccer playoff game in 1997 when the won a school-record 17 games and captured All-NJAC honors three times. Not coincidentally, she became the first women s soccer player inducted into the William Paterson University Alumni Association Athletic Hall of Fame last winter. Now, she helps keep the program buoyant by teaching the team to be tactically sound. She does so by practicing with them, teaching them the skills she still displays while playing with the semi-pro New Jersey Stallions. In addition to her soccer glory at William Paterson, Sinram was a valued defensive player for the women s basketball team from She helped the Pioneers reach the Elite 8 in 1995 and 1998 and the Sweet 16 in 1997 as they posted a record (64-8 NJAC) in her four seasons on the hardwood. A middle school teacher in Wayne, Sinram was recently anointed as the head girls basketball coach at Wayne Valley High School. She graduated from the University in 1998 with a bachelor s degree in biology and secondary education. 6

15 A pioneer for the women s soccer program, Kathleen Sinram ( 98) became the first player from the program inducted into the William Paterson University Alumni Association Athletic Hall of Fame last November. It was certainly fitting, since some of the program s greatest successes came with Sinram on the pitch. Her clutch-goal scoring ability (she is tied for the singleseason record with five) and her tenacious defense helped the Pioneers emerge on the Division III national scene shortly after becoming a varsity sport in 1994, her freshman year. With its three-time All-NJAC selection leading the way, the program made its first NCAA Division III playoff appearance in In addition, the Pioneers also won a school-record 17 matches that season. For this, Sinram was the first women s soccer inductee into the University s Athletic Hall of Fame. With the success the Pioneers have enjoyed since their inception, there should be other inductees to keep Sinram company in the Hall of Fame. Kathleen Sinram
