Others have gone on to coaching jobs elsewhere, such as Janelle Breneman (Head Softball Coach, Bucknell), Marci Hickey (Head Softball Coach at Coppin State), Leah Conte (Head Field Hockey Coach at Washington and Mary College) and Kathy Frick, former head coach at Goucher College and current head coach of Bloomsburg University lacrosse. A 1971 graduate of East Stroudsburg, Hutchinson also earned a master s degree in education from the school in Prior to Bloomsburg, she initiated the women s physical education program at Blair Academy and served as head coach for field hockey, basketball and softball. In the summer of 2000 the Bloomsburg University Council of Trustees honored Hutchinson by naming the softball field in her honor. She has also been inducted into the Hall of Fame at both Newton (NJ) High School and Sussex (NJ) County. ASSISTANT COACH SUSAN KOCHER Now in her 17th season as assistant coach, Susan Kocher joined the staff after an outstanding career as a player. Kocher s main responsibility is handling the pitching staff during the season, but her duties also include running the extensive fall practice and exhibition schedule while Jan Hutchinson is with the field hockey team. In her time with the pitching staff, she has coached seven players to All-American status, two of which were two-time honorees. A two-time All-American herself and three-time All-PSAC selection as a pitcher, Kocher is the only pitcher in school history to throw a perfect game and a no-hitter on the same day. In addition, she had a career record of and boasted an earned run average of She struck out 485 batters and threw eight no-hitters for the Huskies, including two perfect games. At the plate, she had a fine career as a hitter, with 71 RBI and 65 runs scored. In 1999 Kocher was one of five inductees into the Bloomsburg Athletic Hall of Fame. 8 Coach Jan Hutchinson has seen a lot of softball in her 26 years as head coach. She knows that playing with intensity can separate the good teams from the great teams. As Hutchinson prepares for the 2004 season she sees an intensity in the Huskies that is getting her excited for the start of the season. I am really looking forward to this season, said Hutchinson. The team has been practicing with a lot of emotion and intensity. They are fired up during all the drills and can t wait for the season to start. Last year was disappointing since we did not make the NCAA final eight. I know this year s team is using that as one of its goals for the year. They want to go out on top as seniors. Our team leadership is very good this year with seniors Amber Cowher and Jess Shnyder stepping into the role of leaders, Hutchinson added. They have both been All-Americans in their careers and have worked hard in the off-season to get even better. They are certainly leading by example. We return all but two starters in the field and have all of our pitchers returning, said Hutchinson. If we can keep everyone healthy we should have another outstanding season. INFIELD The Huskies infield is both strong and deep this year. Returning players Dee Wolfe and Sara Roba will be vying for the starting first base job. Wolfe came on offensively for the Huskies at the end of last year and will be a key figure in the middle of the lineup this year. Roba is a bat you want in the lineup and is also solid defensively. A freshman, Kristen Koveleski, is a solid player with great work ethic and will see time at both first and the outfield. At second base sophomore Kelly Zarski will get the nod with freshman Jess Snader adding quickness and depth to the second base and shortstop positions. Zarksi had a good offensive season as a freshman and should continue to get better. Snader has great range and a strong arm Preview 6 Amanda Breon, a first team All-PSAC selection last year, will start again at shortstop for the Huskies. Breon is a quiet leader who can hit for power and average. She is an outstanding player at shortstop with great range, a strong arm and solid fundamentals. At the hot corner, look for Laurel Koster to once again earn the starting job. Koster is very quick defensively and will be backed up by sophomore Cyrstal Condran. OUTFIELD In leftfield the Huskies will start Samantha Basalik who has gotten better each of her three years with the Huskies. Basalik has good range and is expected to have a breakout year with the bat. In centerfield, All-American Jess Shnyder is back for her fourth year after leading the team in most offensive categories a year ago. Shnyder has great range in the outfield and will once again be a key offensive performer. Right field will be a toss up in the early going for the Huskies. Because the team is so deep and talented in the infield, look for several infielders to get some playing time in right. Among those battling for the spot will be Roba, Zarski, Snader, Kovaleski and Tina Jennosa. PITCHING The Huskies staff can best be described in one word talented. Led by senior Amber Cowher, the Huskies can send anyone of four pitchers to toe the rubber this year with confidence. This fall each of the Huskies pitchers either added a pitch or improved the pitches they were already throwing. The power for each of the pitchers also increased. Cowher, who has been an All- American during her career, threw 37 consecutive shutout innings last year for the Huskies while striking out a careerhigh 193 batters. Cowher not only improved as a pitcher, but also as a hitter. Look for her to be a key performer offensively as well for the Huskies. Jaime Wilson, Amanda Smith, a pair of junior, and a red-shirt sophomore Jen Probst, have also made big strides the past

9 2004 Preview/Roster two seasons and are ready to now become key performers for the Huskies. All three saw considerable time on the mound, including both PSAC and NCAA postseason games, with several strong performances. CATCHING Senior Becca Kehler and Alyson Taylor will see time behind the plate this season. Kehler is a slugger who once hit four home runs in her first four at-bats of the year, while Taylor had a great fall season and is ready to be a key contributor. Taylor also has good mechanics and a strong arm. Freshman Tina Jennosa is a solid catcher with a strong bat who will add depth both behind the plate and in right field. OVERALL I have a lot of optimism as we start the year, said Hutchinson. We are experienced, deep in pitching and have a good work ethic. This team can go far if it so desires. As far as the PSAC goes, Hutchinson is predicting a dogfight among several teams. Shippensburg will once again be very good, while Mansfield and East Stroudsburg are much improved and are looking to qualify for the PSAC playoffs, Hutchinson added. West Chester has added a new coach who should field a strong team, while Kutztown is always a team to watch NUMERICAL ROSTER No. Name Pos. Cl. B/T Hometown (High School) 6 Jess Snader INF/OF Fr. 23 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, with 52 years of organized competition, has established itself as one of the most respected NCAA Division II athletic conferences. In its history the PSAC has laid claim to 33 NCAA team champions and 186 individual title winners, giving credence to its fine athletic tradition. The conference s prosperity on the national level was abundant again in , as nearly one-third of the league s 245 teams participated in NCAA postseason competition. The PSAC also distinguishes itself as the second largest Division II conference in terms of sports sponsorship, awarding titles for 22 different sports. Academic success is paramount for PSAC member institutions as well. During the academic year, 1,200 student-athletes were designated by the conference as Scholar-Athletes after attaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better. Additionally, eight PSAC student-athletes earned Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America Awards last season. The PSAC was organized in 1951 for the purpose of promoting and administering men s athletic programs within the 14 state teachers colleges in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In 1977, due to the interest and growth of women s athletics, the conference was restructured to provide for women s programs. From its inception, each conference member selected its own competitive division within the NCAA. In 1980, however, the presidents voted to reclassify the entire conference to Division II. Although all 14 institutions are members of NCAA Division II, nine schools have also elected to compete at the Division I level in select sports. In 1983, all member institutions were granted university status as a result of Legislative Act 188, which formed Pennsylvania s State System of Higher Education. This system now enrolls in excess of 101,000 students. The alumni of the State System number more than 586,000, including 375,000 Pennsylvanians. Games BLOOMSBURG Florida Southern UC Davis Augustana, SD Nebraska-Omaha California (PA) Cal.-St. Northridge 9 57 Kennesaw St Take one glance at the history of the NCAA Division II Softball Championships and the name Bloomsburg is prominent throughout the pages. The only institution to participate in every NCAA Division II Tournament since 1983, the Huskies have the most wins of any Division II school with 59. Bloomsburg missed only the 1982 tournament, a season in which the Huskies won the AIAW Division III national championship. That season, teams had a choice in which tournament to participate. Twice the national runner-up, Bloomsburg has won more Mid-Atlantic/East Region titles than any other school in the region. In fact, its nine titles dwarf the next closest schools, California (PA) and Sacred Heart, which have three and two regional crowns, respectively. The Huskies have been in the championship round eight of the last 14 seasons, a feat matched by no other Division II program. In that time, the team placed second twice, third four other times and fourth twice. The Huskies played the longest game in NCAA Division II Tournament history in 1984, when Bloomsburg battled Sacred Heart for 23 innings. Sacred Heart captured a 1-0 decision in the game, and, after the Huskies won the following game 3-0, Sacred Heart won another 1-0 contest, this one in eight innings, to advance to the championship round.
