GAME INFORMATION game 8 Smith center WASHINGTON, D.C. 7 p.m. TV/radio: A-10 NETWORK VCU will open Atlantic 10 Conference play on the road taking on George Washington. VCU is coming off a tight loss to Iona on Wednesday night and will play its second game in three days. The Rams have played on one day of rest once this season as they face IUPUI on Nov. 22 before heading to Daytona Beach for the San Juan Shootout. VCU played American on Nov. 24 and Villanova on Nov. 25, winning both of those games. Against Iona, GG Goodhope had a season-high 17 points on 5-of-13 shooting. She has scored 17 and 16 points each of her last two games, both new season-highs. The Rams trailed Iona heading into the fourth quarter, the Rams staged a comeback and outscored the Gaels in the fourth quarter. VCU only trailed with 10 seconds left and had the final possession but Keira Robinson s shot at the buzzer just missed. VCU met George Washington twice last season, once in the regular season and once in the A-10 Semifinals. The Rams won on the road at George Washington last season, the program s first against the Colonials, VCU fell to George Washington though in the semifinals by a score of Robinson is the team s leading scorer at 13.0 points per game but seven other Rams average 5.0 points or more per game. THE COLONIALS GEORGE WASHINGTON COLONIALS (5-2, 0-0) A-10 HEAD COACH: Jennifer Rizzotti George Washington has won its last two games and five of its last six after opening the season with a loss at Georgetown. The Colonials have beaten Florida Gulf Coast (76-47) and Western Kentucky (68-49) by wide margins in their last two outings which took place at the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Florida. George Washington also faced No. 11/18 Syracuse in the Gulf Coast Showcase, dropping a close contest on Nov. 15. George Washington has beaten two opponents VCU has also beaten this season. The Colonials beat Coppin State on Nov. 13 and then beat Villanova on the road on Nov. 20. The Rams beat Coppin State and topped Villanova in Daytona Beach George Washington leads all A-10 teams currently in field goal percentage defense and 3-point field goal defense, allowing opponents to only shoot 32.0 percent from the field and 23.9 percent from behind the arc. The Colonials also lead the A-10 also in rebounds per game (46.57) and blocked shots per game (6.0), The Colonials were picked just one spot ahead of VCU in the preseason poll and feature preseason All-Atlantic 10 selection in Caira Washington. The senior forward is averaging 13.6 points per game this season along with 7.9 rebounds, both team-highs. The Colonials have four other players at least averaging both 7.4 points per game and 5.1 rebounds.

4 VCU STORYLINES ALWAYS ON THE UP & UP As a head coach, Beth O Boyle s teams have always won as many or more games than the previous season. At Montclair State, her team s wins increased from 15 to 18 over three seasons. At Stony Brook, her team s wins went from a 4-26 record to 24-9 over the course of three seasons. At VCU, her squad improved from in to last season. ONE MOOR-E YEAR VCU added graduate transfer Mooriah Rowser from Memphis this past May. She appeared in 95 games for the Tigers, averaging 11.1 points per game with a 44-percent field goal percentage in her campaign. She made 35 total three-pointers over the season, and shot 74 percent from the free throw line. Rowser has 16 career double-figure games, reaching a career-high of 26 points. She was named to the AAC All-Freshman Team as a Redshirt Freshman in and was twice honored as the AAC Freshman of the Week. Rowser was ranked the No. 38 guard in the 2012 recruiting class by ESPN HoopGurlz. com, Rowser also garnered Washington D.C. Gatorade Player of the Year honors as a junior. Rowser plans on obtaining her Masters Degree from VCU in Computer and Information Systems Security, and chose VCU over Georgia Tech and St. John s. LIFE S A BEACH The VCU Women s Basketball team will head to Daytona Beach for Thanksgiving as part of the San Juan Shootout. The team faced American on Nov. 24 and Villanova on Nov. 25. The tournament was originally slated for San Juan, Puerto Rico but was moved due to concerns in dealing with the Zika virus. VCU won both games, defeating American and Villanova THREE S COMPANY The Rams are set to appear on television at least three times during the season. Two of the games, Richmond on Jan. 5 and Saint Louis on Jan. 8, will be aired on CBS Sports Network while the third, at Duquesne on Feb. 12, will air on the American Sports Network. THE POWER OF 5 The Rams will face three Power 5 schools during non-conference play this season. Minnesota on Nov. 15 and travel to Ole Miss (Dec. 17) and Wake Forest (Dec. 21.). The Rams defeated a ranked Power 5 school in then-no. 17 Arizona State last season. It was VCU s first win over a ranked opponent since DRIVING WITHOUT MISS DAISY VCU will have to replace All-Atlantic 10 Third Team member and 1,000 point scorer Adaeze Daisy Alaeze. She averaged a team-high 11.6 points per contest as well as 6.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. The Rams lost other key contributors in Jessica Ogunnorin who averaged 5.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game and Chadarryl Clay who averaged 5.2 points and 1.5 assists per contest. POSTED UP VCU is coming off a season in which it qualified for the Women s National Invitational Tournament and hosted Virginia in the first round. It marked the seventh time in the previous nine seasons that VCU has qualified for postseason play. The Rams have made the WNIT six times and the NCAA Tournament once during that span. REACHING A PLATEAU Senior guard Isis Thorpe is just one of 22 players in school history to have scored 1,000 career points. Her and Alaeze both eclipsed the mark last season. Thorpe did it on Feb. 17 at Rhode Island. She currently sits at 1,062 career points scored. THE FOUR-ONE-ONE VCU signed four players in the early signing period last fall that are now suiting up for the Rams this season as freshman. Jailyn Maddox A Hoover High School grad, Maddox was ESPN.com s 61st-ranked guard in the class of As a junior, Maddox averaged 13.9 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. She was named All-State Third Team by the Alabama Sports Writers Association and All-Birmingham Area Second Team. She was also selected to play for the AHSAA North All-Star Team. Nyra Williams ESPN.com rated her as the 27th-best point guard in her class. In , she averaged 11.4 points, 6.2 assists and 3.4 steals per game at Bethel High School. Danielle Hammond She averaged 13.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game at Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, Pa. She was named First Team All-Inter-AC League and First Team All-Man Line. Awarded MVP of the Abington Friends Coaches for Cancer Tournament last season. Niya Johnson Ranked No.87 ranked combo guard in her class according to ESPN.com. Averaged 22.0 PPG, 10 RPG, and three steals. Named First Team All-Brooklyn in and Third Team All-Brooklyn in as a sophomore. Named Federation Class A Championship MVP.

7 BETH O BOYLE HEAD COACH THIRD SEASON at VCU GETTYSBURG ( 98) AT VCU ( OVERALL) Beth O Boyle became the 13th head coach in VCU Women s Basketball history on April 29, In , O Boyle led the Rams to a overall record with a 10-6 mark in conference play. VCU defeated a ranked Arizona State squad and earned six victories over NCAA Tournament teams. The Rams were rewarded with a WNIT bid, the program s seventh postseason berth since the season. In her first season at the helm of the Rams in , she led the team to 16 wins, marking the eighth time in the past nine seasons that VCU has posted a winning record. O Boyle assumed the reigns at VCU after she led Stony Brook to a remarkable turnaround in three seasons on Long Island. The Seawolves improved by 10 wins in each of the last two seasons, including the campaign, when O Boyle guided the club to a school Division I record 24 wins (24-9), and a WNIT bid, the program s first postseason appearance since Stony Brook reached the America East Championship Game last season, the school s first appearance in the final since O Boyle was also pivotal in the development of 2014 America East Defensive Player of the Year Chikilra Goodman. In , Stony Brook s 10-win turnaround was the seventh-best in the country. O Boyle was overall in three seasons with the Seawolves. During O Boyle s tenure, Stony Brook was known for its stout defense. In each of her three seasons, the Seawolves ranked in the top 50 nationally in scoring defense. In , SBU allowed just 60.5 points per game, the 45th-best mark in the country. The Seawolves also ranked 20th nationally in rebounding margin (+7.7). Prior to guiding the Stony Brook program, O Boyle spent four seasons as an assistant at Canisius. She helped steer the program to its best season in , when the Golden Griffins won 24 games and advanced to the MAAC Championship Game. Canisius also received a WNIT bid for the first time in program history. Hired as an assistant coach at Canisius in 2007, O Boyle was elevated to associate head coach in November Responsible for all recruiting activities, as well the development of the Golden Griffin guards, O Boyle coached seven All-Conference players at Canisius, including 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Defensive Player of the Year Brittane Russell, 2009 MAAC Sixth Player of the Year Ellie Radke and 2011 MAAC Rookie of the Year Jamie Ruttle. O Boyle has also shown a commitment to developing the total student-athlete. Dani Klupenger earned America East All-Academic status in for her work on the court and in the classroom. At Canisius, she monitored the academic progress of a Golden Griffins team that was recognized in the NCAA Top 25 for team grade point average. In total, Canisius has had 18 selections to the MAAC All-Academic team since O Boyle s arrival, including Marie Warner, who was also named a ESPN the Magazine third-team Academic All-American in O Boyle came to Canisius after serving as the head coach at Montclair State University in Montclair, N.J., for three seasons. O Boyle led the Red Hawks to the ECAC Division III Metro Women s Basketball Championship in and was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Co-Coach of the Year following the season. She compiled a record in her three seasons there, and the Red Hawks also produced their first All-American in 15 seasons under O Boyle s guidance. Prior to taking over at Montclair State, O Boyle spent four seasons as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Rochester. During her first two seasons, Rochester won back-to-back ECAC Upstate New York championships and in her last two seasons, the team made consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division III Final Four. In 2004, the team was ranked No. 1 in the nation for a three-week period according to the USA Today/ESPN/WBCADivision III poll and the D3hoops.com poll. A 1998 graduate of Gettysburg College, O Boyle earned four letters with the basketball and soccer programs at Gettysburg and served as a two-time captain in each sport. O Boyle earned her master s degree from the Rochester s Warner School of Education in O Boyle is a native of Rockville, Md., and attended the Academy of the Holy Cross High School in Kensington, Md.
