SEC Rewind: Plays Arkansas to 3-3 Draw in Baton Rouge Strikers Jorian Baucom and Summer Clarke and defender Megan Lee each scored goals to give the Tigers a lead over Arkansas during their regular-season clash in 2014 at the Soccer Stadium, but the visiting Razorbacks responded each time to force extra time as the sides played to a 3-3 draw in 110 minutes of action in one of the most thrilling contests in the series in recent years. The Tigers were on their way to a first SEC win of the 2014 season with the scoreboard showing a 3-2 lead with just 15:09 to play in regulation following Clarke s go-ahead goal. But Nicoe Ortega rescued a point for the visitors as she found herself on the end of free kick into the box as the final seconds ticked off the clock to draw Arkansas level at 3-3 with just seven seconds to play in regulation. The sides settled for a point on the afternoon as the Razorbacks ended a 10-match winning streak in the series with the draw. Last Time Out Junior Alex Thomas pulled a goal back for with her eighth of the season midway through the second half, but her consolation was not enough as the visiting Tigers fell, 4-1, at 24th-ranked Ole Miss in their Southeastern Conference clash Sunday at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium. Thomas gave the Tigers (8-3-2, SEC) life with 23 minutes to play as she halved the Rebel lead with a far-post finish from eight yards after controlling Dana Reed s centering pass from the right end line. Sophomore striker CeCe Kizer restored the Rebel advantage with a brace late in the second half when she first buried a sliding effort inside the six-yard box from the centering pass by Gabby Little in the 78th minute of play before tapping home her second goal of the match and 13th of the season in the 86th minute just under five minutes from the full-time whistle. Ole Miss leveled the series with the win as the Rebels and Tigers have now won 10 matches apiece while drawing four in their 24 meetings all-time. The Rebels also took a advantage on their home field. s All-Time Wins Over Nationally-Ranked Opponents has won 11 matches against nationally-ranked opponents in its history, including its 1-0 home win over 19th-ranked Cincinnati on Sept. 14. 3 Higgins Finds Home on and off the Pitch Zoe Higgins appeared in all 19 matches while making five starts in her debut season with the Tigers a year ago after transferring from the University of Oregon, scoring one goal on just 14 shots while playing most of the season as a reserve midfielder. She now looks a player reborn in her senior season this fall after making a position change in the offseason to center forward. Higgins has certainly found her home on the pitch as she has started all 13 matches in the middle of the attack while following junior Alex Thomas with career-high four goals with the Tigers now at the midway point of the SEC season. While also providing two assists, Higgins is among the top scorers in the SEC with 10 points to this point of the season. Her impact is also seen with her work rate and movement up front as 20 of the team s 23 goals this season have been scored with Higgins on the field. The Tigers have only scored three goals with Higgins watching from the sideline after being subbed out of the match. Come On You Gunners! An injection of talent at each level of the pitch has certainly provided the spark in s start to the 2017 season as no less than five freshmen have cracked the starting lineup in the non-conference season. Three of those freshmen - forward Tinaya Alexander, midfielder Lucy Parker and defender Chiara Ritchie-Williams - are England youth internationals and products of the Arsenal youth system where they were among the top prospects in the club. Parker, an attacking midfielder who enrolled at in January for the spring 2017 semester, has provided a creative dimension in midfield that was sorely lacking in the squad during a difficult 2016 season. She has scored three goals and provided four assists in 13 starts heading into Thursday s match with Arkansas, including scoring the opening goal in the 35th minute and assisting Alex Thomas winning goal in the 87th minute in a 2-1 win over Georgia last week. Alexander is certainly one of the most exciting attacking talents in college soccer, regardless of class, as she has netted three goals while providing an SEC-leading seven assists on the year. Ritchie-Williams has helped to settle an defense that conceded 29 goals to its opponents a year ago. She has formed a strong partnership with senior Jordane Carvery in the middle to anchor a back line that has conceded 11 times in 13 matches this season. Alexander Equals Record Streak vs. Cincinnati Former Tiger standout Natalie Martineau earned All-SEC honors during her senior season in 2011 as one of the league s top midfielders while leading to a runner-up finish for the SEC title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. While dishing out the fifth most assists in a single season in team history with 10, Martineau set an record with an assist in seven-straight matches from Sept. 11-Oct. 2, That mark was matched on Sept. 14 against 19th-ranked Cincinnati when freshman forward Tinaya Alexander assisted Alex Thomas opener in the 44th minute of s 1-0 win. Alexander served up an assist in her first seven career games as an Tiger to tie for No. 1 in the SEC and No. 7 in the NCAA this season with seven assists heading into Sunday s match with Ole Miss. She is also the SEC s ninth-leading point scorer heading into the match with 13 points that includes three goals scored. Brock-Wall goalkeeper Caroline Brockmeier kept seven clean sheets in her debut season with the Tigers in 2016 after transferring to Baton Rouge from Florida State as a redshirt sophomore. She is now just one shutout shy of matching that output with six clean sheets already to her credit in her first 13 starts as a junior in With 13 shutouts in her 32 career starts, Brockmeier has moved into the No. 6 spot on s all-time career list with the better part of two seasons of eligibility remaining. She anchors a defensive unit that ranks among the best in in the SEC as has conceded 11 goals to its opponents in 13 matches to tie for the No. 6 spot in the SEC rankings for goals allowed. The Tigers 0.97 goals against average also ranks No. 7 in the SEC heading into the weekend. Hahn Recovers from Spring ACL Tear Senior Debbie Hahn made her season debut off the bench in s 2-0 home win over Lamar on Aug. 25, just six months after tearing the ACL in her left knee at the start of spring training. Not only has Hahn appeared in each of the team s last 10 matches with increased minutes each time out, but she earned her way back into s starting lineup as an outside back in six of the last eight outings against Liberty, Cincinnati, Vanderbilt, Alabama, Mississippi State and Kentucky to help solidify the defense. A transfer from Florida State prior to the 2015 season, Hahn is one of the more experienced members of the squad with 48 starts in her 53 appearances during that time. Her versatility will also prove valuable to the Tigers this season as she has seen action as a forward, attacking midfielder and defender in each position in s back line during her time in Baton Rouge. Non-Conference Schedule Affected by Hurricanes Soccer has certainly not been immune to the effects of Mother Nature in the opening weeks of the season as the Tigers have seen matches affected by both Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. As Hurricane Harvey approached Southeast Texas, s home match against Lamar that was scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 27, was moved up two days to Friday, Aug. 25, as the Tigers picked up a 2-0 win in the contest. With Houston being impacted most by Hurricane Harvey making landfall on Aug. 25, s home match against the University of Houston scheduled for the following week was canceled and replaced with a home match against Austin Peay on Sept. 3. The Tigers erased a 1-0 halftime deficit to win 3-1 in a match that was scheduled just the day before. The Tigers trip to Orlando, Florida, on Sept. 8 was also affected as their match at No. 20-ranked Central Florida was canceled the day it was to be played on the orders of Florida Gov. Rick Scott. announced last week the rescheduling of its match against Central Florida as the two teams will now square off in Baton Rouge on Sunday, Oct. 15, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. CT. That rescheduling also moved s home match against Arkansas in SEC play to Thursday, Oct. 12, at 6 p.m. CT. TOPDRAWERSOCCER.COM POLL RK. TEAM RECORD LAST 1.
