1 In Review Milwaukee (8-24, 3-13 Horizon League) The Hot List The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men s basketball team finished a challenging season at 8-24 overall and 3-13 in the Horizon League. The Panthers struggled with injuries and lineup changes throughout the season. Twelve different players started at least one game for Milwaukee, with eight of those players making their first collegiate starts during the year. Five players who started games during the year also missed time due to injury. Jordan Aaron was honored by the Horizon League following the season, earning all-newcomer team honors. The junior-college transfer finished second on the team in scoring, averaging 14.4 points per game. He made 30 starts and reached double figures a team-best 23 times. He also had 128 assists, including a pair of double-figure assist outings. After missing the first six games of the season with a broken hand, senior Paris Gulley wound up leading the team in scoring while reaching double figures in 22 of the 26 games he played in. Demetrius Harris emerged to put together a solid senior year. He started 28 times, averaging 9.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. It looks like he may have a future on the gridiron, as the high school football star signed a multi-year free agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. UWM also had three other seniors wrap up their careers in Milwaukee, as James Haarsma, Christian Wolf and Ryan Haggerty all fiinished up as Panthers. Haarsma and Wolf were slowed by injuries in the second half of the season while Haggerty finished his career with over 100 career appearances. A number of young faces look to have a bright future for the Panthers after a strong campaign. Redshirt freshman J.J. Panoske made 16 starts and averaged 5.0 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. True freshman Austin Arians started three times but made his biggest impact off the bench. He finished fourth on the team in scoring at 6.6 points per game. Milwaukee tallied 18 total double-figure performances off its bench, including 34 and 26-point individual outings Schedule/Results November 5 Parkside (EX) HLN W, University of Mary HLN W, South Carolina Fox Sports Wisconsin L, (OT) 17 Davidson Sports32/HLN W, UALR L, #-vs. Jacksonville L, #-vs. Rider L, December Northern Iowa ESPN3 L, Buffalo HLN L, Northern Illinois HLN W, (OT) DePaul L, Fairfield L, Tennessee Tech HLN L, Wisconsin BTN L, Ohio Dominican HLN W, January Detroit ESPN3 L, Wright State HLN L, Valparaiso HLN GOTW/Sports32 L, Cleveland State Sports32/HLN W, Youngstown State Sports32/HLN L, UIC HLN L, Green Bay ESPNU L, Loyola HLN L, February Valparaiso HLN L, Detroit Sports32/HLN L, Wright State Sports32/HLN L, Loyola Sports32/HLN W, Youngstown State HLN L, Cleveland State Sports32/HLN L, UIC Sports32/HLN W, IUPUI W, (2 OT) Green Bay ESPN3 L, March 5 $-@ Green Bay HLN L, Home games in bold # - Hoops For Hope Classic, Puerto Vallerta $ - Horizon League Tournament HLN - HorizonLeague.com; All times central Perhaps the highlight of Milwaukee s season was a Nov. 17 win over Davidson, which went on to make the NCAA Tournament. 2 The Season The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men s basketball team wrapped up a difficult season with an 8-24 overall record and a 3-13 mark in the Horizon League. About The Non-League Milwaukee faced a challenging non-league schedule during the campaign but still captured a highlight win over NCAA qualifier Davidson. The Panthers also had a double-digit lead much of the way against South Carolina before falling in overtime and had the lead in the second half of their game at Northern Iowa before falling. Milwaukee capped off its non-league slate with a double overtime win at IUPUI as part of the BracketBusters event, marking the Panthers first 2OT game since The League Story A lengthy losing streak in the middle of the league season kept the Panthers from a chance to move up the league standings this past season. Milwaukee nearly won at Wright State on the first weekend of the regular season. Then, the Panthers had a chance to tie its game with Youngstown State on the final possession followed by a game at UIC where it led by 19 points in the second half. Instead, those two games started a seven-game slide and Milwaukee could never recover. UWM did get home wins over Loyola and UIC over the final month of the season. Celebrating The Seniors UWM had five seniors that saw their college careers officially come to a close in Ryan Haggerty, Christian Wolf, James Haarsma, Demetrius Harris and Paris Gulley all played college basketball for the final time this year. Haggerty had the longest tenure in Milwaukee, having spent the last five seasons with UWM, appearing in more than 100 games. He was the only senior on the Panther roster to have spent his entire career in Milwaukee. Wolf was in Milwaukee for four years after playing his first season at Florida Gulf Coast. Haarsma wrapped up his third season in Milwaukee after two years at Evansville, and he surpassed 1,000 points in his Division I career in the final month of the season. Gulley and Harris spent the last two seasons at UWM after playing a pair of seasons in the junior college ranks, and both would up being regular starters this past season. Season Honors A pair of Panthers earned honors from the Horizon League during the season. Jordan Aaron earned a spot on the all-newcomer team following the season and was also the league s newcomer of the week after week two. The junior-college transfer finished second on the team in scoring, averaging 14.4 points per game. He made 30 starts and reached double figures a team-best 23 times. He also had 128 assists, including a pair of double-figure assist outings. Meanwhile, Paris Gulley earned league player of the week honors at the end of the year after leading Milwaukee to wins over Loyola and IUPUI. After missing the first six games of the season with a broken hand, Gulley wound up leading the team in scoring while reaching double figures in 22 of the 26 games he has played in. He also finished second on the team with 52 made three-pointers. An Emerging Contributor Demetrius Harris emerged to put together a solid senior year. He started 28 times, averaging 9.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. The senior wound up with 291 points and 170 rebounds this past season, easily surpassing the 39 points and 33 boards he collected all of the previous season. Now, it looks like he may have a future on the gridiron, as the high school football star signed a multi-year free agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. Young Guns A pair of freshmen appear to have a very bright future with the Panthers after strong performances during their first active seasons on the roster. Redshirt freshman J.J. Panoske wound up making 16 starts, averaging 5.0 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. He pushed those numbers to 6.6 points and 4.4 rebounds in league play and wound up fourth in the league in blocked shots. In fact, his 41 blocks for the season set a new school record. Meanwhile, Austin Arians appeared in 29 games and made three starts but had his greatest impact off the bench. He wound up fourth on the team in scoring at 6.6 points per game and averaged better than seven points per contest against league foes Season In Review Page 2 Season/Career Totals Starts Career Jordan Aaron Demetrius Harris Paris Gulley James Haarsma J.J. Valparaiso Detroit Green Bay Youngstown State Cleveland State Milwaukee Loyola UIC Wright State 86 The Injury Bug The Panthers were never fully healthy during the campaign. Starting with senior Paris Gulley missing the first six games with a broken wrist, Milwaukee never did field a fully-healthy roster. Thierno Niang emerged as a likely contributor in the absence of Gulley but wound up missing more than half of the season with a bad back. Christian Wolf was in the starting lineup at the beginning of the season but wound up being extremely limited in the second half because of a concussion. James Haarsma and Kyle Kelm also missed time during the year and found themselves limited at other times. In the end, Milwaukee had 12 different players start at least one game, with eight of those players making their first collegiate starts during the year and the Panthers using eight different starting lineups. UWM also had 12 players appear in at least 14 games this season, while nine players have played in at least 10 of UWM s 16 league contests. Bench Brigade UWM did get some very strong performances off its bench. Milwaukee s two best individual scoring outputs of the season came from the bench, with James Haarsma s 26 points against Detroit second on that list to the 34 Jordan Aaron scored in a reserve role against Ohio Dominican in late December. UWM had 18 doublefigure efforts from its bench this season. The duo of Jordan Aaron and Paris Gulley logged heavy minutes. Gulley averaged 37.0 minutes per contest while Jordan Aaron averaged Those numbers had Gulley leading the league with Aaron sitting third. Gulley played 37 or more minutes in 13 of his last 17 games, including a run of four-straight games with a full 40 minutes under his belt. Aaron played the full 40 minutes twice in the last 11 games while also playing all but about 40 seconds of Milwaukee s 2 OT win over IUPUI. - The Panthers led or were tied at halftime 14 times this past season but won just six of those 14 games. - UWM saw three players score 20 or more points in the win over IUPUI Feb. 23, as Jordan Aaron scored 28, Demetrius Harris 21 and Paris Gulley 20. That s the first time that has happened since Feb. 5, 2005, when Joah Tucker (26), Ed McCants (22) and Boo Davis (20) did it. - The win at IUPUI marked the first time the Panthers played in and won a double overtime game since January of 2001 at Loyola. Now We Peak Ahead There will be a number of new faces on the Panther roster. Steve Mc- Whorter transferred to UWM from Indiana State last summer and practiced this year while sitting out. Matt Tiby, a transfer from Kirkwood CC, joined the Panther roster at the start of the second semester and practiced while maintaining three seasons of college eligibility. Three other players signed National Letters of Intent during the fall signing period, as Trinson White of Milwaukee, Cody Wichmann of Pulaski and Brett Prahl of East Troy all officially agreed to join the Panthers. Then, junior-college transfer JeVon Long was added to the roster during the spring signing period. That group will join a core group of returnees that already knows it will face Davidson, Wisconsin, Northern Iowa and DePaul during non-league play.

The Jeter File As A Head Coach Eight seasons at UWM 2011 League Coach Of The Year 2006 and 2011 WBCA Coach Of The Year 2011 finalist for Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year Award 2011 finalist for Ben Jobe Award 2011 finalist for Skip Prosser Man of The Year Award Three 20-win seasons Won regular season title in 2011 Won regular season and tournament titles in 2006 Beat Oklahoma in NCAA Tournament First Round in 2006 Set UWM record for first-year head coach with 22 wins As An Assistant Coach Helped Team USA to bronze medal in 2009 World University Games Part of four NCAA Tourney teams and two Big Ten titles at Wisconsin Badgers made it to Elite Eight (2005) and Sweet 16 (2003) During two seasons at UWM, helped Panthers post the first back-to-back plus-.500 seasons since early 1990 s UWM advanced to semis of league tourney for first time At Platteville, Pioneers won two NCAA Division III National Titles and compiled a record As A Player Captained the 1991 Platteville team that won NCAA D III National Title Named to All-WSUC, All-Midwest Region and All-Final Four teams UWP record-holder for career field goal percentage and consecutive starts Played professionally in Portugal That mark has now led the Panthers to a pair of 20-win seasons in the past four years and two postseason berths in the last three seasons. In , UWM finished and claimed a spot in the College Basketball Invitational. Kaylon Williams was named to the all-league team and Ryan Allen to the all-defensive squad. In , Jeter directed his team to wins in their final nine league regular season games, earning the regular season league title along with the top seed and hosting rights for the league tournament. He also collected his 100th career win in the regular season finale. Jeter was then recognized widely for his efforts, earning League Coach of the Year honors as well as being named the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division I Coach of the Year. He was also a finalist for the Hugh Durham Coach of the Year Award, the Ben Jobe Award and the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award. The most recent seasons have been more key steps on a productive journey by Jeter in Milwaukee. After starting his head coaching career with a league title and an NCAA Tournament win, he rebuilt the Milwaukee roster back into a league-championship contender, increasing the number of overall wins for three-straight seasons. Jeter is also one of just two coaches in UWM history to lead his teams to three postseason berths and three 20-win seasons. Jeter started his head coaching career with a bang. He led his team to its third-straight Horizon League regular season title, its second-straight league tournament crown and its second-straight berth in the NCAA Tournament in Once in the tourney, Jeter guided the Panthers to a first-round win over Oklahoma before UWM was eliminated by eventual national champion Florida in the second round in Jacksonville. That season marked a fourth-straight 20-win season for the Panthers, with the 22 victories the most by a first-year head coach in school history. Plus, he helped three of his players earn All-Horizon League honors, a school record, while also having three players earn league all-tournament team recognition. Following that first season, Jeter embarked on the difficult process of rebuilding the Panthers roster. With seven seniors gone from the 2006 squad, he fielded a squad of 16 newcomers in UWM then added five wins to its total in , three more victories in and three more wins in UWM has won 19 and 20 games in the two seasons since. Over the last four years, UWM has won 45 league regular season contests and has claimed some memorable victories in and out of the conference. The Panthers have four wins over Butler in that time and set a school-record by overcoming a 24-point halftime deficit vs. Cal Davis to claim an improbable six-point win. Jeter has also had the chance to take his coaching talents to an international level, serving as an assistant coach for Team USA in the World University Games in The U.S., with former UWM head man Bo Ryan serving as head coach and former Miami (Fla.) head coach Frank Haith serving as another assistant, lost just one time and captured a bronze medal Season In Review Page 11

12 Jeter s work as a head coach has regularly been recognized, as he was named the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division I Coach of the Year in 2006 and was inducted into the UW-Platteville Athletic Hall of Fame in September of He was also recently named an inductee into the inaugural hall of fame class for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and his 1991 National Championship team from Platteville was inducted into the school s hall of fame this past year. Jeter s impact has also been felt off the court. He directed a major fundraising campaign that sent the Panthers on a 10- day trip to Italy in 2010, while he has also built his Full-Court Club luncheons from audiences of 30 at the beginning to regular crowds of more than 100 people. He also spearheaded the outfitting of UWM s new locker room and team room in the Pavilion, including wooden lockers, furniture and a large-screen television. Plus, his fundraising efforts have helped enhance the team s academic support and sports medicine efforts, while also upgrading various aspects of team travel. He has also jumped into a number of charitable ventures off the court, including his extensive involvement in Shooting For A Cure, a Wisconsin-based Coaches vs. Cancer event that debuted in the summer of Jeter is also a regular at Milwaukeearea community events, including the annual Fellowship Open. Jeter returned to UWM as the 20th head coach in the school s history after serving for four years as an assistant coach and associate head coach at the University of Wisconsin. He previously served as an assistant at both UWM and Marquette after working and playing at Division III power UW-Platteville. Jeter worked under Ryan for 10 of his 11 years as an assistant coach, spending one year under Mike Deane at Marquette. At Wisconsin, Jeter served as the Badgers lead recruiter while also coordinating the scouting and academic efforts. In four seasons at Wisconsin, Jeter helped the Badgers to remarkable success. They won two regular season Big Ten championships and a Big Ten Tournament title. Wisconsin also made four-straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including berths in the Sweet 16 in 2003 and the Elite Eight in Jeter served on Ryan s staff for two seasons at UWM, recruiting Panther stars Adrian Tigert and Chris Hill while helping to lay the foundation for success on the basketball court. Under Ryan and Jeter, UWM recorded its first two plus-.500 seasons since the early 1990 s while increasing attendance nearly 300 percent. Winning has never been a problem for Jeter. All told, he has been a part of 12 conference championships, including 10 as a coach. He has won three national championships, including two as a coach. As a player at UW-Platteville, his teams went in four seasons. In his 11 years as an assistant coach, his teams posted a combined record, good for a.743 winning percentage. In league play, his teams recorded a record. Jeter s collegiate basketball life started at UW-Platteville, where he played for Ryan from and then was an assistant from As a player for the Pioneers, Jeter captained the team to the 1991 NCAA Division III title and was named to the All-Final Four team. A twotime All-WSUC selection and two-time All- Midwest Region choice, Jeter still holds UW-Platteville records for career field goal percentage (.601) and consecutive starts (89). Jeter was also named to the WSUC honor roll three times. As an assistant coach, Jeter helped guide the Pioneers to a overall record, two NCAA Division III titles and four conference championships. In addition to his coaching duties at UW-Platteville, Jeter coordinated the program s academic, recruiting and scouting efforts and directed the Bo Ryan Basketball Camps. He was also an admissions coordinator at the school. In between playing and coaching at UW- Platteville, Jeter spent a season playing basketball overseas. He starred for the Olivias Futebol Clube in Portugal in , leading the Portuguese league in scoring. Jeter was born in Pittsburgh on May 15, 1969, and then grew up in Chicago as part of an athletic family. His late dad, Bob, is a member of the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame and his brother, Carlton, played basketball alongside Rob in Platteville. He attended high school at Quigley South before earning both his bachelor s and master s degrees from UW-Platteville.
