West Campus Field (2,500) First Kick C-USA Champions NCAA Tournament Elite Sweet 16 9 All-Americans UAB returns home to Birmingham for four-straight matches beginning with the UAB Soccer for a Cure Classic this weekend at West Campus Field. This year s field features UIC (Horizon League), Gardner-Webb (Big South) and Georgia State (Sun Belt). The Blazers face the Flames Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and close the tournament Sunday vs. Gardner-Webb at 2:30 p.m. UAB is coming off tournament play at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament, where the Green and Gold dropped two matches to top-25 opponents, No. 18 Indiana (2-1) and No. 5 Notre Dame (4-0). The last two matchups versus this weekend s opponents -- UIC and Gardner-Webb -- both ended in 1-1 draws in regulation. Gardner-Webb faced the Blazers in the NCAA Tournament in Birmingham in 2006, and advanced in tournament play after a penalty kick victory. UAB s last meeting versus UIC came in 2011 in the second game of the season. Junior goalkeeper Joe Kuzminsky has been busy thus far in the season, and played particularly well in terms of saves. He s averaging 5.50 saves per game, which is 22nd nationally and second in all of Conference USA. His 22 total saves also ranks fourth in the NCAA and first in the league. Still early in the campaign, senior forward Freddy Ruiz has made his presence known on the frontline, ranking 19th in the NCAA in shots per game (4.00) despite not scoring a goal through four matches. This year s event marks the 18th year of the tournament, and eighth year with the name Soccer for a Cure. The Blazers captured the tournament title in 2014 for the 10th time in event history, and have won it four of the last five seasons. Overall, the Blazers have won Classic titles in 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012 and As part of the Soccer for a Cure weekend, select players from the competing teams will visit Children s Hospital on Saturday. Raffles towards two $100 gift cards to Eurosport will be available to fans, and all money raised will directly benefit Children s of Alabama and other local children, with all funds staying local in Birmingham. The two squads last met in 2011, tying 1-1 in double overtime. The two prior meetings, the Flames were a top-25 team as the Blazers fell, 1-0, in the first meeting in 2008, before knocking off UIC, 3-1, in The Flames were ranked 10th nationally in 2009, and 16th nationally in UAB s last meeting versus Gardner-Webb was in the NCAA Tournament in the 2006 campaign, when the Runnin Bulldogs defeated the Blazers in penalty kicks. The two squads played to a 1-1 draw in double overtime before going to PKs. Last Time Out: NO. 5 Notre Dame 4, UAB 0 UAB played well for the majority of the first 60 minutes of the match versus the Fighting Irish last Sunday, hanging around in a 1-0 deficit. The 2013 national champions scored in the 19th minute, but the Blazers played strong for the remainder of the opening period and kept the deficit to 1-0. The Irish turned on the offense midway through the second half, scoring two goals within six minutes of each other. Jon Gallagher found the net twice for Notre Dame, sealing the win in the 83rd minute to make it a 4-0 contest. UAB s two opponents in the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament last weekend were both ranked in the top-25 and were national champions in two of the last three seasons (Indiana , Notre Dame ). Notebook Scouting The Opponent UIC returns 17 total letterwinners from its 2014 squad, welcoming in eight newcomers this season. The Flames went in 2014 and in Horizon League Play. Thus far in the 2015 campaign, UIC is with the lone win coming against Bradley in the season opener. The Flames dropped a road match to SMU, 2-1, and tied Butler, 1-1, last weekend. Alvarez, Max Todd, Manny Chavez and Marco Alvarez all have one goal each this season. Goalkeeper ANdrew Putna has played all matches in goal and allowed three goals with 12 saves. Gardner-Webb heads into 2015 with 13 newcomers on its squad. The Runnin Bulldogs totaled a record last year and went in Big South Conference play. Gardner-Webb has a 1-2 record early in 2015 with a 7-2 win over Laurel University. GWU dropped matches to Wofford, 3-0, and Charlotte, 4-0. Fillipe Conceicao, Sami Jilla and Hunter Frey have each scored twice, a squad that allows three gaols per game. Blazers Begin 36th Season of Soccer UAB begins its 36th season of men s soccer in 2015, and 20th season of Conference USA action. In the program s 35- year history, the Blazers have totaled an overall record of (.551), won the Conference USA Championship four times, been to the NCAA Tournament eight times, qualified for the Elite 8 and Sweet 16 once, and produced nine All-Americans. The Blazers advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2014 for the third time in the last four seasons, hosting Furman in an NCAA opening round matchup in Birmingham. In the last four years, UAB has totaled an overall record of , and won 20 league games. While this is inevitable, it is important to note that the two are indeed separate institutions. In addition, the UAB name is often altered by various media, opponents, merchandisers, etc. Please note that there are only two correct versions of our name: UAB or University of Alabama at Birmingham

3 UAB Soccer for a Cure Classic The 2015 season marks the 18th year of the UAB Soccer for a Cure Classic. This year, UAB plays host to Georgia State, UIC and Gardner-Webb. This year s Soccer For A Cure Classic will begin on Friday, Sept. 11, when Georgia State takes on Gardner-Webb at 3 p.m., followed by UAB hosting UIC in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 13, Georgia State will square off against UIC at 12 p.m., with UAB and Gardner-Webb concluding tournament play at 2:30 p.m. The 2015 season marks the eighth straight year that the tournament has been tabbed the Soccer for a Cure Classic. When the event first began in 2008, it was the first tournament of its kind in the nation. The event will raise money to help aid cancer victims through the sport of soccer. The money that is raised by the event will remain in Birmingham and be divided among cancer research facilities. Last year, the event raised several hundred dollars for families affected by cancer. UAB captured the tournament title in 2014; marking the 10th time the Blazers have won the event. The Blazers were ranked as high as No. 18 in that poll in 2014, as high as No. 8 in 2013, and have either received votes or been ranked in that specific poll every week since the 2013 preseason poll. UAB was one of five C-USA teams to appear in this season s preseason poll. In all, 10 of UAB s 19 opponents in 2015 either received votes or were ranked in the preseason list. The Bennett Rankings have also shown the Blazers love over the years, putting the Green and Gold as high as No. 19 last season. The official NCAA RPI report, which isn t released until midway through the season, placed the Blazers as high as No. 17 in Freddy Ruiz Named to MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List The Missouri Athletic Club and National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced in early August that UAB senior forward Freddy Ruiz was one of 30 NCAA Men s Division I players to be named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. The most prestigious individual award in NCAA soccer is presented annually to one male and one female athlete. The lists are compiled by the NSCAA Men s and Women s NCAA Division I All-America Committees, based on analysis of returning All-America and All-Region players, as well as any prominent newcomers. Near the end of the collegiate regular season, NCAA Division I coaches whose programs are current NSCAA College Service members will vote on their top choices and the lists will be narrowed down to the top 15 players. From that pool of 30, six finalists (three men, three women) will be chosen for the award, before the winners will be announced in January. Ruiz Named Preseason All-American Senior forward Freddy Ruiz was named a Preseason All-American by College Soccer News. The Fort Payne, Ala. native was named to the Preseason Third Team ahead of the 2015 season. UAB has had one College Soccer News All-American in school history, Marin Pusek back in 2002, who earned honorable mention honors. Svantesson Scores Big; Robinson Finds the Net In First Match of 2015 Senior defender Ian Svantesson has made the most of his two opening-weekend performances the last two seasons, totaling four goals in each of the Blazers first two games in 2014 and Last season, the Orlando, Fla. native was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week and C-USA Defensive Player of the Week after scoring in the first two matches. This past weekend, Svantesson got the season off on the right foot, finding the net twice in Friday night s 3-1 road win at Memphis. Sophomore midfielder DeAndre Robinson was inserted into the starting lineup in the season opener Friday at Memphis and shined early, giving the Blazers a 1-0 lead in the first period. It marked Robinson s second goal of his career in his first start. He also went on to record an assist later in the match. Mike Getman (.611) Mike Getman has seen his dream of a UAB soccer program that would compete for conference titles and NCAA Tournament berths come true. Getman, now in his 24th season as UAB s head coach, has led the Blazers to eight NCAA Tournament appearances, including a spot in the Elite Eight in 1999 and Sweet 16 in Additionally, he has led UAB teams to six regular season and tournament championships and has been selected the conference coach of the year on three different occasions. Last season, UAB qualified for its third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four seasons and eighth overall, hosting an NCAA opening-round matchup for the fourth time in school history. The Blazers finished 2014 as the No. 25 scoring offense in the NCAA (1.80 GPG), the fifthstraight year of finishing in the top-50 in scoring in the NCAA. The Blazers finished third in the C-USA regular season standings in 2014, the fourth time in the last six seasons of finishing top-three. Seven Blazers were also named All-Conference USA under Getman, as the Green and Gold were ranked as high as No. 18 at one point during the year. In all, it is a far cry from when Getman accepted the job of turning the Blazer program around. He inherited a program in 1992 that had just three winning records in its first 13 seasons. Getman set goals for the program and Blazer fans know that many of those original goals have been met or exceeded. With all of those accomplishments, Getman is not satisfied. We want to be a national contender every year, he said. We play in one of the toughest conferences in the nation, Conference USA, and we feel that our schedule helps us to prepare for postseason play. In 2005, Getman was named the C-USA Coach of the Decade for his accomplishments during his coaching tenure at UAB. Furthermore, Getman has been named conference Coach of the Year three times. He holds a (.611) mark in 28 seasons as a head coach and a (.613) record in 23 seasons at UAB. Even more impressive is the total of 123 all-conference selections he has coached at UAB. From , Getman served on the NCAA Men s Soccer Committee. He also played a large part in bringing the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Men s College Cup to Birmingham. Furthermore, Getman is ranked among college soccer s top men s active coaches. The 28-year coaching veteran also ranks among the winningest coaches in NCAA Division I soccer history. Getman is among a handful of coaches who both played for and coached a team to the NCAA College Cup, accomplishing the feat twice as a player and once as a coach. Getman s players successes extend off the field as well. Over 90 percent of student-athletes who have played four years during his tenure as head coach completed their degree requirements. He now boasts more than 100 C-USA honor roll members (3.0 GPA or above), 27 C-USA academic medal recipients (3.75 GPA or above) and five academic All-Americans. Getman has further improved his already impressive academic standards over the past few years, as three Blazers have been tabbed the C-USA Scholar Athlete of the Year, with all three honorees coming over the last nine seasons (Lukasz Kwapisz in 2004, Jeremy Drake in 2006 and Wes Johnson in 2008). Getman came to Birmingham from Harvard, where he was head coach from During his time at the Cambridge, Mass., school, his teams posted a (.604) record, including a (.643) mark in Ivy League play. In his first season at Harvard, he led his team to the 1987 NCAA Final Four, as the Crimson went and captured the Ivy League title. He became the youngest coach (28) to lead a team to the Division I Final Four. The following season, Harvard was ranked No. 1 for the first time in the school s history. While at Harvard, Getman developed 21 All-Ivy League players, nine All-New England performers and two All-Americans. He started his coaching career at his alma mater, Indiana, where he served as an assistant coach from In those three seasons, the Hoosiers were in the NCAA Tournament twice and played in the 1984 title game. Getman played professionally as a defender for the Detroit Express of the American Soccer League from He was the team s Rookie of the Year in 1982, as the Express won the ASL championship. A three-year letterwinner at Indiana, he played fullback for the Hoosiers from , during which time IU finished as an NCAA Division I national finalist in 1978 and A native of Bloomington, Ind., he earned his bachelor s degree in economics from Indiana in 1982 and his master s in athletic administration from IU in Involved in all facets of soccer, Getman has been South Region coach for the U.S. Soccer Festival.
