UABSports.com 2016 UAB Men s Soccer First Kick UAB hits the road for the first time in nearly a month for its first Conference USA away game against Florida Atlantic on Saturday night. The Blazers are looking to maintain their undefeated record in C-USA to date (1-0-1) while FAU is looking for its first positive result in conference this year (0-2-0). These two teams have met only twice in Boca Raton, Fla., and have split those two contests. UAB topped Howard 3-1 in its last outing Tuesday night. The Blazers scored three straight goals in the second half before the Bison converted a penalty kick in the waning minutes. It was the first meeting ever between the two schools. Since the season-opener loss to Memphis, the Blazers are and have given up just five goals over those eight games. They had gone over 300 minutes before allowing a goal against Howard on a penalty kick. The team has 0.62 goals against average this season which would be the lowest mark ever by a UAB squad. Massimo Ferrin scored his third goal of the season Tuesday night to take over the team lead in goals and points (six). The freshman also leads the team with 28 shots and 11 shots on goal. Joe Kuzminsky has been one of the top goaltenders not only in the conference, but also in the nation this season. The senior netminder ranked highly entering the week in multiple categories including sixth in save percentage (.884), 23rd in saves (38), and 28th in goals against average (0.58). Kuzminsky s four shutouts already ranks in the top eight in school history for a single season. The Denver, Colo., native has 165 career saves, good for seventh in school history, and is three shutouts and three wins from the top five all-time. Pos. No. Name Yr. The Blazers improved to as they concluded a five-game home stretch. The Blazers controlled the pace of play through the first half but were unable to net a goal. They came out firing in the second half and netted two goals in the first 10 minutes of the frame. Philip Makinde scored the first goal in the 53rd minute. The redshirt freshman buried a one-timer on a pass from Ryan Sullivan. It was Makinde s first career goal and Sullivan s first points in a Blazer uniform. Massimo Ferrin then struck for the third time this season. The freshman striker lined up a penalty kick and buried the opportunity in the 55th minute to extend the UAB lead to 2-0. The Blazers would find the back of the net one last time in the 71st minute on arguably the most spectacular effort of the match. DeAndre Robinson s shot tucked into the left side of the net past the goalkeeper for Robinson s third career goal and first of the 2016 campaign. Notebook Scouting Florida Atlantic The Owls sit in last place in Conference USA after opening conference play with two losses. Florida Atlantic is coming off a non-conference 3-1 win over Stetson at home. FAU has notched a record in Boca Raton, Fla., and has scored five of its seven goals at home while only allowing three goals compared to giving up nine goals in road contests. No team has scored more than a goal when visiting the FAU this season. Senior Jason Fitzgerald leads the Owls offensively. He has scored twice and added an assist while leading the team with 13 shots. Fitzgerald scored in the last contest versus the Hatters, the eventual game-winner. Youth Movement UAB lost its top three scorers from last year to graduation including Freddy Ruiz who ranks tied for fourth all-time in school history for goals (29) and eighth in points (66). The Blazers welcome 11 new faces to the team and have a roster that consists of 17 freshmen or redshirt freshmen. During the preseason, freshmen accounted for four of the team s six goals including two goals and one assist coming from Massimo Ferrin. The first UAB goal of the 2016 campaign came from freshman Andrew Nkpolukwu against Xavier on August 28. Ferrin then added his first two career goals in the next game versus UNC Greensboro on September 3. Tarnue Tyler joined the scoring on September 11 against Rhode Island with a 5th minute strike while Chase Rushing scored in the game against Marshall on September 17. Philip Makinde found the back of the net for the first time against Howard on September 27 while Ferrin scored his third career goal shortly after on a penalty kick. While this is inevitable, it is important to note that the two are indeed separate institutions. The two players were chosen after a vote by their peers. Laurent, who sat out last season with a medical redshirt, was named to the All-Conference USA Freshman Team in The Canadian played in all 20 games for the Blazers including 17 starts on the UAB backline. Kuzminsky receives the honor after starting 33 of a possible 38 games across the last two years. Both players have been apart of the C-USA Commissioner s Academic Honor Roll each of the last two seasons as well. BBVA Compass Field Expansion UAB and BBVA Compass Bank announced back in November a plan to bring a new soccer facility to campus. The bank announced they would provide a $1.5 million gift, and in recognition of that, the facility was named BBVA Compass Field. The facility will seat roughly 2,500 fans once expansion is finished. This season is the first full year the Blazers are calling BBVA Compass Field. They played one home game at the facility last season. Scoring First Key for Blazers The Blazers conceeded the first goal of the game 10 times last season and were just 1-9 in such contests. However, UAB did manage a 4-2 record when getting on the scoreboard first in Thus far this year, the Blazers won all four games in which they scored first and are when opponents score first. Dajani Approaching School Annals Senior forward Rami Dajani was the only player on the Blazers roster to enter the season with more than two career goals. The native of Niles, Ill., has scored 14 times in his career, placing him just seven goals shy of the top ten. He is tasked with anchoring a front line this season that is likely to consist of entirely freshmen outside of himself. Scoring in Bunches The Blazers have registered three-or-more goals 13 times since 2014 and boast a perfect 13-0 record in such contests. The last time UAB reached that achievement was against Howard this season on September 27 in a 3-1 victory. Foreign Imports UAB boasts a deep international roster with 11 players being born outside the United States borders across nine countries. The Blazer internationals also cover five of the seven continents. Three of those players, Massimo Ferrin, Mathieu Laurent, and Philip Makinde, hail from Ontario, Canada. Getman, now in his 25th season as UAB s head coach, has led the Blazers to eight NCAA Tournament appearances, including a spot in the Elite Eight in 1999 and Sweet 16 in Additionally, he has led UAB teams to six regular season and tournament championships and has been selected the conference coach of the year on three different occasions. In 2014, UAB qualified for its third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four seasons and eighth overall, hosting an NCAA opening-round matchup for the fourth time in school history. The Blazers finished 2014 as the No. 25 scoring offense in the NCAA (1.80 GPG), the fifth-straight year of finishing in the top-50 in scoring in the NCAA. The Blazers finished third in the C-USA regular season standings in 2014, the fourth time in the last six seasons of finishing top-three. Seven Blazers were also named All-Conference USA under Getman, as the Green and Gold were ranked as high as No. 18 at one point during the year. In 2013, UAB appeared in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Poll for 12 consecutive weeks and was ranked as high as No. 8 in the nation. The Blazers led the country in scoring, recording 2.39 goals per game in For the fifth-straight year, UAB won at least 10 matches, as the squad went The fans came out in bunches to see the 2013 UAB men s soccer team at West Campus Field, as the squad ranked No. 39 in the country in average home attendance. An average of 968 people attended the Blazers home matches last season. For the fourth time since 2003, UAB finished in the top 50 in the nation in average attendance. 3,205 people, a West Campus Field regular-season record, watched the Blazers defeat 2012 national champion Indiana, 2-1 in overtime, on Friday, Sept. 6. In addition, 1,776 people, the 10th-best crowd in facility history, came out to watch UAB play Charlotte to a 0-0 draw in the UAB Soccer for a Cure Classic on Friday, Sept. 1. The 2012 season proved to be another solid campaign, as the Blazers earned an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament, marking the second straight year the team has played in the national tournament. It marked the third time in program history that the Green and Gold played in the NCAA Tournament in consecutive seasons. The Blazers finished the season with a mark, the fourth year in-a-row with at least 10 victories. In all, it is a far cry from when Getman accepted the job of turning the Blazer program around. He inherited a program in 1992 that had just three winning records in its first 13 seasons. Getman set goals for the program and Blazer fans know that many of those original goals have been met or exceeded. In 2005, Getman was named the C-USA Coach of the Decade for his accomplishments during his coaching tenure at UAB. Furthermore, Getman has been named conference Coach of the Year three times. He holds a (.603) mark in 30 seasons as a head coach and a (.603) record in 25 seasons at UAB. Even more impressive is the total of 125 all-conference selections he has coached at UAB. From , Getman served on the NCAA Men s Soccer Committee. He also played a large part in bringing the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Men s College Cup to Birmingham. Furthermore, Getman is ranked among college soccer s top men s active coaches entering the season (41st in winning percentage and 15th in victories). The 29-year coaching veteran also ranks among the winningest coaches in NCAA Division I soccer history, ranking tied for 39th all-time in victories. Getman is among a handful of coaches who both played for and coached a team to the NCAA College Cup, accomplishing the feat twice as a player and once as a coach. Getman s players successes extend off the field as well. Over 90 percent of student-athletes who have played four years during his tenure as head coach completed their degree requirements. He now boasts more than 101 C-USA honor roll members (3.0 GPA or above), 27 C-USA academic medal recipients (3.75 GPA or above) and five academic All-Americans. Getman has further improved his already impressive academic standards over the past few years, as three Blazers have been tabbed the C-USA Scholar Athlete of the Year, with all three honorees coming over the last 10 seasons (Lukasz Kwapisz in 2004, Jeremy Drake in 2006 and Wes Johnson in 2008). In fact, in 2006, Drake was tabbed the league s Scholar Athlete of the Year for men s soccer, while Lukasz Kwapisz earned the post-graduate scholarship award for men s soccer. The duo was the only UAB student-athletes to earn the prestigious awards in any sport. UAB fans have responded to the program s winning ways as home attendance average at West Campus Field over the past few years is close to 1,000. In 2003, UAB was 16th in the nation in average attendance (1,077/game) and 25th in the nation in total attendance (7,545). During the 2006 campaign, UAB ranked 31st in average attendance (853/ game) and 43rd in total attendance (5,972). In 2009, UAB ranked 48th in total attendance (6,779).
