West Campus Field (2,500) First Kick C-USA Champions NCAA Tournament Elite Sweet 16 9 All-Americans UAB and Florida Atlantic meet for the fifth time on Saturday when the Blazers host the Owls at West Campus Field. After dropping the first match in the series back in 2000, the Blazers have won three-straight over Florida Atlantic. The Blazers are coming off five-straight matches versus teams who appeared in the NSCAA Top-25 poll, including a 3-2 setback Sunday night at New Mexico. After opening up a 1-0 lead at the break, and increasing it to 2-0 quickly in the second half, the Lobos stormed back for three second-half goals. Seniors Ian Svantesson and Freddy Ruiz have carried the load for the Green and Gold as of late. Svantesson has scored in two-straight matches and three times in the last four outings, while Ruiz has recorded goals in three-straight matches and four times in the last five contests. The duo have combined for 11 goals, four assists and 26 points this season. Berry Sonnenschein has also recorded assists in two-straight matches, and leads the squad in that category with five. This season has seen many UAB players set career marks. DeAndre Robinson kicked the year off scoring a goal in the opener vs. Memphis, the first of his career. Newcomer Berry Sonnenschein, an international transfer, has evolved into a leader on the backline for the Blazers. Henrique Sposito, a junior, recently notched the first goal of his career vs. FIU. Aaron Getman-Pickering, Chandler Stroupe and Hunter Weber have all made the first starts of their careers this season. With his goal versus New Mexico senior forward Freddy Ruiz now ranks tied for fourth all-time in UAB career goals with 29, and is one goal away from tying for third. In the C-USA race for the C-USA Championship, UAB currently sits in a tie for sixth. The Blazers and New Mexico both have three points with a 1-3 record, while the Owls of Florida Atlantic are 1-5, also with three points. The top seven teams determined by points following the regular season will qualify for the C-USA Championship, Nov in Charlotte, N.C. Saturday s match will be the last on the West Campus Field turf this season, as the Blazers will move to the new BBVA Compass Field surface for the final match vs. Charlotte on Nov. 7. Florida Atlantic was victorious in the first meeting back in 2000, but the Blazers have since won 5-0 (2001), 6-2 (2013) and 3-0 (2014). The programs have met twice in Birmingham, the first time in 2001 and also in 2013, when the Owls officially joined as members of C-USA. Last season s win was especially significant, giving the Blazers win No. 350 atll-time, and also securing the sixth-straight 10-win season for the program. Last Time Out: New Mexico 3, UAB 2 Coming off eight days of rest combined with the long trip West, the Blazers took a 1-0 lead to the half and quickly pushed it to 2-0 in the second period, but surrendered three scores from the Lobos to drop the C-USA match. Senior Ian Svantesson continued to lead the squad after pushing past the New Mexico defense in the eighth minute, putting the Blazers up, 1-0. That score held up until the halftime break, when senior Freddy Ruiz struck 18 seconds into the second half, punching one in from the left corner to secure a 2-0 Blazer lead. The Lobos Francesco Casucci responded for the home team in the 50th minute, before making it an even match nine minutes later off a free kick. The 2-2 score lasted just over 10 minutes before the Lobos secured the game-winner. Notebook Scouting The Opponent Florida Atlantic has had a rough go in the 2015 slate, going winless in the first 12 matches before recently securing the first win of Picked to finish last in the C-USA Preseason Poll, the Owls are 1-5 in league play with the lone win coming against Marshall (1-0) this past Monday. Despite a record, the Owls have played seven games decided by just one score, while also tying in two matches. Florida Atlantic s most notable tie came versus Florida Gulf Coast, when the two squads finished 0-0 in two overtimes. The Owls also fell to No. 15 South Carolina by just one score, 2-1. As a unit the Owls have struggled to find scoring, averaging just 0.62 goals per game. The squad has scored just eight goals all year, while giving up an average of 2.15 per contest. Three players have each scored twice for the Owls, led by Ramon Whittaker, Thomas Gallits and Elijah McDonald. Gallits leads the team with five points, while Whittaker s 13 shots for six on goal lead the club. Phillip Hitpass and Josh Nolan have split time in goal thus far in the season, with Hitpass allowing the fewest goals, 1.55 per game with 24 saves. Spreading the Wealth Through 12 matches in the 2015 regular season, 10 different Blazers have in some way factored into scoring. Defender Ian Svantesson has jumped out to the points lead with six goals and 14 points, while Freddy Ruiz is second with five goals and 12 points. Rami Dajani is the team s third-best scorer with three goals, while Karl Chester has two. DeAndre Robinson, Henrique Sposito and Ryan Sullivan -- who all recorded the first goal of their careers this season -- have one goal each. Newcomer Berry Sonnenschein leads the team in assists with five, while Robinson has three and Ruiz, Chester and Svantesson both have two helpers. BBVA Compass Field Under Construction UAB and BBVA Compass Bank announced back in November a plan to bring a new soccer facility to campus. The bank announced they would provide a $1.5 million gift, and in recognition of that, the facility was named BBVA Compass Field. The facility, which is currently under construction adjacent to West Campus Field, will seat roughly 2,500 fans. Record Crowd Witnesses UAB vs. South Carolina The 12th-largest crowd in West Campus Field history watched the Blazers take on the Gamecocks in the matchup on Sept. 18. The announced attendance for the match was 1,673, the 12th-largest recorded crowd in the facility s history. The UAB marching band, along with spirit groups, were in attendance and performed as part of the match. Ruiz Up to Fourth On Career Goals List Senior forward Freddy Ruiz, who s earned multiple accolades in his career, has inched up yet again on the UAB career goals list with 29 in his career. The Fort Payne, Ala. native has scored five this season, second-most on the team, and is just one away from tying for third on the career list. Freddy Ruiz Named to MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List The Missouri Athletic Club and National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced in early August that UAB senior forward Freddy Ruiz was one of 30 NCAA Men s Division I players to be named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. The most prestigious individual award in NCAA soccer is presented annually to one male and one female athlete. The lists are compiled by the NSCAA Men s and Women s NCAA Division I All-America Committees, based on analysis of returning All-America and All-Region players, as well as any prominent newcomers. Near the end of the collegiate regular season, NCAA Division I coaches whose programs are current NSCAA College Service members will vote on their top choices and the lists will be narrowed down to the top 15 players. From that pool of 30, six finalists (three men, three women) will be chosen for the award, before the winners will be announced in January. Ruiz Named Preseason All-American Senior forward Freddy Ruiz was named a Preseason All-American by College Soccer News. The Fort Payne, Ala. native was named to the Preseason Third Team ahead of the 2015 season. UAB has had one College Soccer News All-American in school history, Marin Pusek back in 2002, who earned honorable mention honors. The Blazers finished 41st in NCAA Men s Division I soccer with an average of 920 fans per match in UAB ranked 39th in 2013 with a 968 average. Stacked Schedule UAB has arguably one of the toughest schedules in the country, competing in one of the nation s premier leagues, Conference USA. In all, 10 of UAB s 19 opponents (exhibitions included) appeared in the NSCAA Preseason Coaches Poll in some way. Of the top-25 teams in the preseason rankings, eight are programs the Green and Gold face in 2015 (No. 4 Notre Dame, No. 11 Clemson, No. 14. C-USA Preseason Awards Blazers Picked Fifth in Preseason Poll UAB was one of four teams in the league to earn a first-place vote, as the league s head coaches picked the Blazers to finish fifth in the Conference USA regular season. Charlotte was picked as the favorite, as New Mexico, Kentucky, Old Dominion and UAB rounded out the top five. UAB was picked to finish third in 2014 and finished the year with a 5-3 conference record in second place. Ruiz Named Preseason All-Conference Senior forward Freddy Ruiz, the defending Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year, was tabbed as a preseason all-conference selection for the second consecutive year. Mike Getman (.611) Mike Getman has seen his dream of a UAB soccer program that would compete for conference titles and NCAA Tournament berths come true. Getman, now in his 24th season as UAB s head coach, has led the Blazers to eight NCAA Tournament appearances, including a spot in the Elite Eight in 1999 and Sweet 16 in Additionally, he has led UAB teams to six regular season and tournament championships and has been selected the conference coach of the year on three different occasions. Last season, UAB qualified for its third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four seasons and eighth overall, hosting an NCAA opening-round matchup for the fourth time in school history. The Blazers finished 2014 as the No. 25 scoring offense in the NCAA (1.80 GPG), the fifthstraight year of finishing in the top-50 in scoring in the NCAA. The Blazers finished third in the C-USA regular season standings in 2014, the fourth time in the last six seasons of finishing top-three. Seven Blazers were also named All-Conference USA under Getman, as the Green and Gold were ranked as high as No. 18 at one point during the year. In all, it is a far cry from when Getman accepted the job of turning the Blazer program around. He inherited a program in 1992 that had just three winning records in its first 13 seasons. Getman set goals for the program and Blazer fans know that many of those original goals have been met or exceeded. With all of those accomplishments, Getman is not satisfied. We want to be a national contender every year, he said. We play in one of the toughest conferences in the nation, Conference USA, and we feel that our schedule helps us to prepare for postseason play. In 2005, Getman was named the C-USA Coach of the Decade for his accomplishments during his coaching tenure at UAB. Furthermore, Getman has been named conference Coach of the Year three times. He holds a (.611) mark in 28 seasons as a head coach and a (.613) record in 23 seasons at UAB. Even more impressive is the total of 123 all-conference selections he has coached at UAB. From , Getman served on the NCAA Men s Soccer Committee. He also played a large part in bringing the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Men s College Cup to Birmingham. Furthermore, Getman is ranked among college soccer s top men s active coaches. The 28-year coaching veteran also ranks among the winningest coaches in NCAA Division I soccer history. Getman is among a handful of coaches who both played for and coached a team to the NCAA College Cup, accomplishing the feat twice as a player and once as a coach. Getman s players successes extend off the field as well. Over 90 percent of student-athletes who have played four years during his tenure as head coach completed their degree requirements. He now boasts more than 100 C-USA honor roll members (3.0 GPA or above), 27 C-USA academic medal recipients (3.75 GPA or above) and five academic All-Americans. Getman has further improved his already impressive academic standards over the past few years, as three Blazers have been tabbed the C-USA Scholar Athlete of the Year, with all three honorees coming over the last nine seasons (Lukasz Kwapisz in 2004, Jeremy Drake in 2006 and Wes Johnson in 2008). Getman came to Birmingham from Harvard, where he was head coach from During his time at the Cambridge, Mass., school, his teams posted a (.604) record, including a (.643) mark in Ivy League play. In his first season at Harvard, he led his team to the 1987 NCAA Final Four, as the Crimson went and captured the Ivy League title. He became the youngest coach (28) to lead a team to the Division I Final Four. The following season, Harvard was ranked No. 1 for the first time in the school s history. While at Harvard, Getman developed 21 All-Ivy League players, nine All-New England performers and two All-Americans. He started his coaching career at his alma mater, Indiana, where he served as an assistant coach from In those three seasons, the Hoosiers were in the NCAA Tournament twice and played in the 1984 title game. Getman played professionally as a defender for the Detroit Express of the American Soccer League from He was the team s Rookie of the Year in 1982, as the Express won the ASL championship. A three-year letterwinner at Indiana, he played fullback for the Hoosiers from , during which time IU finished as an NCAA Division I national finalist in 1978 and A native of Bloomington, Ind., he earned his bachelor s degree in economics from Indiana in 1982 and his master s in athletic administration from IU in Involved in all facets of soccer, Getman has been South Region coach for the U.S. Soccer Festival. He was the chairman of the soccer games committee for the 1996 Birmingham Olympic Soccer Committee.
