First Kick UAB is coming off a successful yet grueling weekend in which it earned two road ties after 110 minutes of action in each. The Blazers finished with a 2-2 result at UNC Greensboro and then a 0-0 draw at Coastal Carolina less than 48 hours later. It was the first time they played in back-to-back overtime games since UAB is undefeated in three straight games (1-0-2). This is the first time the Blazers have not lost in at least three straight since 2014 when they rattled off five straight games without a loss (4-0-1). Goalkeeper Joe Kuzminsky had a big weekend between the pipes. He totaled17 saves across two days and a career-high 10 saves versus Coastal Carolina after tying his previous career-high of seven saves against UNC Greensboro. Those performances moved the senior into ninth in school history in career saves. The Denver, Colo., native has stopped 151 shots in his career, just 20 saves shy of the Division I active top 20. Kuzminsky also ranks in the top 15 in the nation across three statistics. He is tied for fifth in the nation in saves (24), tied for fourth in goalie minutes played (400), and also tied for 14th in save percentage (.889). Those first two marks also rank atop Conference USA. Forward Massimo Ferrin netted his first two career goals against the Spartans last Saturday. The Ontario, Canada, native had a productive preseason with two goals and an assist. The freshman now leads the team in goals (2), points (4), and shots on goal (4). All of UAB s goals have come in the second half this season. Dating back to 2009, the Blazers are outscoring teams in the second half of games, good for a +49 scoring margin. probable starters Pos. The Chanticleers fired 27 shots in the game with 10 being on frame. Blazers goalkeeper Joe Kuzminsky answered with a career-high 10 saves to preserve the shutout. The UAB defense added seven blocked shots. Kuzminsky had two similar saves that preserved the shutout in the second half and overtime. Coastal set up similar opportunities in the 76th and 99th minutes, crossing the ball into the box to set-up header opportunities, but Kuzminsky got his body behind the ball each time to prevent goals. The Blazers controlled the overtime periods, outshooting the Chanticleers 5-3 across the extra 20 minutes of play. The big opportunity in the extra frames came on a free kick for forward Massimo Ferrin. Ferrin, coming off a two-goal effort against UNC Greensboro, delivered a beautiful strike on the free kick that hit the crossbar and hung in the air for a few seconds before being corralled by Chanticleers goalkeeper Braulio Linares-Ortiz. Notebook Scouting Tulsa The Golden Hurricane is off to a start this season and most recently tied Saint Louis 1-1. Tulsa was the American Athletic Conference (AAC) champion last season and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament before being knocked out by Notre Dame in penalty kicks. TU was picked to finish fourth in the conference s preseason poll. Jacob Gooden leads the team offensively through the first three games. He tops the Golden Hurricane in goals (2), points (4), shots (8), and shots on goal (6). Gooden scored Tulsa s lone game-winning goal of the season. Scouting Rhode Island The Rams opened the season with two victories but then fell to New Hampshire 2-1 before rebounding with a 1-1 tie against Drexel. Rhoddy was projected to finish fourth in the Atlantic 10 and received one first-place vote. The Rams brought back eight starters from last season but have been led early on from freshman Stavros Zarokostas who has two goals, one assist, and five points. Rhode Island plays Stetson on Friday evening before facing UAB on Sunday afternoon. Youth Movement UAB lost its top three scorers from last year to graduation including Freddy Ruiz who ranks tied for fourth all-time in school history for goals (29) and eighth in points (66). The Blazers welcome 11 new faces to the team and have a roster that consists of 17 freshmen or redshirt freshmen. During the preseason, freshmen accounted for four of the team s six goals including two goals and one assist coming from Massimo Ferrin. The first UAB goal of the 2016 campaign came from freshman Andrew Nkpolukwu against Xavier on August 28. Ferrin then added his first two career goals in the next game versus UNC Greensboro on September 3. Notebook Captain s Armband UAB head coach Mike Getman announced the Blazers captains for the 2016 season as sophomore defender Mathieu Laurent and senior goalkeeper Joe Kuzminsky. The two players were chosen after a vote by their peers. Laurent, who sat out last season with a medical redshirt, was named to the All-Conference USA Freshman Team in The Canadian played in all 20 games for the Blazers including 17 starts on the UAB backline. Kuzminsky receives the honor after starting 33 of a possible 38 games across the last two years. Both players have been apart of the C-USA Commissioner s Academic Honor Roll each of the last two seasons as well. BBVA Compass Field Expansion UAB and BBVA Compass Bank announced back in November a plan to bring a new soccer facility to campus. The bank announced they would provide a $1.5 million gift, and in recognition of that, the facility was named BBVA Compass Field. The facility will seat roughly 2,500 fans once expansion is finished. This season is the first full year the Blazers are calling BBVA Compass Field. They played one home game at the facility last season. Dajani Approaching School Annals Senior forward Rami Dajani is the only player on the Blazers roster to register more than two career goals. The native of Niles, Ill., has scored 13 times in his career, placing him just eight goals shy of the top ten. He will be tasked with anchoring a front line this season that is likely to consist of entirely freshmen outside of himself. Scoring First Key for Blazers The Blazers conceeded the first goal of the game 10 times last season and were just 1-9 in such contests. However, UAB did manage a 4-2 record when getting on the scoreboard first in Thus far this year, the Blazers won their only game in which they scored first and are when opponents score first. Scoring in Bunches The Blazers have registered three-or-more goals 11 times since 2014 and boast a perfect 11-0 record in such contests. The last time UAB reached that achievement was last season against Florida Atlantic, a 3-0 victory on the road. Foreign Imports UAB boasts a deep international roster with 11 players being born outside the United States borders across nine countries. The Blazer internationals also cover five of the seven continents. Three of those players, Massimo Ferrin, Mathieu Laurent, and Philip Makinde, hail from Ontario, Canada. White a Mainstay in the Line-up Defender William White has been a consistent presence in the Blazers line-up. The senior has started the most games in a row among any active players on the team with 20 straight starts. White consistently plays as one of the two center backs and is a vocal leader on the field. Getman Climbing the Ladder Head coach Mike Getman continues to rise on the career coaching wins leaderboard. Getman currently ranks 15th among active coaches with 306 career wins and recently tied former Philadelphia University and UNLV coach Barry Barto for 38th all-time in Division I history. Entering the season, Getman ranked 41st among active coaches in career winning percentage (.603 percentage). Mike Getman, Harvard, UAB Mike Getman has seen his dream of a UAB soccer program that would compete for conference titles and NCAA Tournament berths come true. Getman, now in his 25th season as UAB s head coach, has led the Blazers to eight NCAA Tournament appearances, including a spot in the Elite Eight in 1999 and Sweet 16 in Additionally, he has led UAB teams to six regular season and tournament championships and has been selected the conference coach of the year on three different occasions. In 2014, UAB qualified for its third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four seasons and eighth overall, hosting an NCAA opening-round matchup for the fourth time in school history. The Blazers finished 2014 as the No. 25 scoring offense in the NCAA (1.80 GPG), the fifth-straight year of finishing in the top-50 in scoring in the NCAA. The Blazers finished third in the C-USA regular season standings in 2014, the fourth time in the last six seasons of finishing top-three. Seven Blazers were also named All-Conference USA under Getman, as the Green and Gold were ranked as high as No. 18 at one point during the year. In 2013, UAB appeared in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Poll for 12 consecutive weeks and was ranked as high as No. 8 in the nation. The Blazers led the country in scoring, recording 2.39 goals per game in For the fifth-straight year, UAB won at least 10 matches, as the squad went The fans came out in bunches to see the 2013 UAB men s soccer team at West Campus Field, as the squad ranked No. 39 in the country in average home attendance. An average of 968 people attended the Blazers home matches last season. For the fourth time since 2003, UAB finished in the top 50 in the nation in average attendance. 3,205 people, a West Campus Field regular-season record, watched the Blazers defeat 2012 national champion Indiana, 2-1 in overtime, on Friday, Sept. 6. In addition, 1,776 people, the 10th-best crowd in facility history, came out to watch UAB play Charlotte to a 0-0 draw in the UAB Soccer for a Cure Classic on Friday, Sept. 1. The 2012 season proved to be another solid campaign, as the Blazers earned an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament, marking the second straight year the team has played in the national tournament. It marked the third time in program history that the Green and Gold played in the NCAA Tournament in consecutive seasons. The Blazers finished the season with a mark, the fourth year in-a-row with at least 10 victories. In all, it is a far cry from when Getman accepted the job of turning the Blazer program around. He inherited a program in 1992 that had just three winning records in its first 13 seasons. Getman set goals for the program and Blazer fans know that many of those original goals have been met or exceeded. In 2005, Getman was named the C-USA Coach of the Decade for his accomplishments during his coaching tenure at UAB. Furthermore, Getman has been named conference Coach of the Year three times. He holds a (.603) mark in 30 seasons as a head coach and a (.603) record in 25 seasons at UAB. Even more impressive is the total of 125 all-conference selections he has coached at UAB. From , Getman served on the NCAA Men s Soccer Committee. He also played a large part in bringing the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Men s College Cup to Birmingham. Furthermore, Getman is ranked among college soccer s top men s active coaches entering the season (41st in winning percentage and 15th in victories). The 29-year coaching veteran also ranks among the winningest coaches in NCAA Division I soccer history, ranking tied for 39th all-time in victories. Getman is among a handful of coaches who both played for and coached a team to the NCAA College Cup, accomplishing the feat twice as a player and once as a coach. Getman s players successes extend off the field as well. Over 90 percent of student-athletes who have played four years during his tenure as head coach completed their degree requirements. He now boasts more than 101 C-USA honor roll members (3.0 GPA or above), 27 C-USA academic medal recipients (3.75 GPA or above) and five academic All-Americans. Getman has further improved his already impressive academic standards over the past few years, as three Blazers have been tabbed the C-USA Scholar Athlete of the Year, with all three honorees coming over the last 10 seasons (Lukasz Kwapisz in 2004, Jeremy Drake in 2006 and Wes Johnson in 2008). In fact, in 2006, Drake was tabbed the league s Scholar Athlete of the Year for men s soccer, while Lukasz Kwapisz earned the post-graduate scholarship award for men s soccer. The duo was the only UAB student-athletes to earn the prestigious awards in any sport. UAB fans have responded to the program s winning ways as home attendance average at West Campus Field over the past few years is close to 1,000. In 2003, UAB was 16th in the nation in average attendance (1,077/game) and 25th in the nation in total attendance (7,545). During the 2006 campaign, UAB ranked 31st in average attendance (853/ game) and 43rd in total attendance (5,972). In 2009, UAB ranked 48th in total attendance (6,779).
