1 USA Basketball Developmental National Team Spring Vol. 1. What is the Developmental National Team? In an effort to field strong, experienced teams, USA Basketball founded the Developmental National Team (DNT) program in The DNT emcompasses all USA Basketball men s high-school age teams and training camps, including the FIBA Americas U16 Championship, the FIBA U17 World Championship, the FIBA Americas U18 Championship, the Junior Natonal Select Team that competes in the Nike Hoop Summit Team, as well as 3x3 teams. DNT training camps are held twice a year, typically October and June. 2 THIS YEAR: 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship Led by three-time USA Basketball Developmental Coach of the Year Don Showalter (Iowa City H.S., Iowa), the USA will look to defend its title at the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship from June 29-July 8 in Kaunus, Lithuania. Rich Gray (St. Louis Eagles AAU, Mo.) and Mike Jones (DeMatha Catholic H.S., Md.) are assistant coaches. The 12-member USA U17 roster will be selected from the DNT following the June training camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo DNT Roster The USA rolled up an 8-0 record to capture the gold medal in the inaugural U17 tournament in Brad Beal averaged a U.S. high 18.3 ppg. and was selected MVP, while James McAdoo averaged 15.0 ppg. and 7.3 rpg. to earn his spot on the five member all-tournament team. USA U17 History LAST YEAR: 2011 U16s The USA claimed gold in the 2011 FIBA Americas U16 Championship with a victory over Argentina. The finish qualified the USA for this summer s FIBA U17 World Championship, along with two other teams from FIBA Americas. Scoring ppg., the USA won its five games by an average of 42 points. Players interested in joining the DNT should fill out an athlete eligibility form each January, noting the age requirements established by FIBA and FIBA Americas. 4 THIS YEAR: 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship U18 COACHING STAFF (Florida), head coach (Gonzaga), assistant (VCU), assistant 24 players have accepted invitations to the 2012 USA U18 training camp. Finalists for the team will be named after the first three or four days, and the 12-member roster will be selected prior to the U18 Championship, which will be played June in Sao Sebastiáo do Paraiso, Brazil MU18 Training Camp Roster In the hunt for a sixth gold medal, USA men's teams are 38-2 overall. Austin Rivers, who was the third-leading scorer overall in 2010 at 20.2 ppg., has declared for the 2012 NBA Draft after a sensational freshman season at Duke Olympic gold medalists Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh and Deron Williams, as well as 2010 FIBA World Champion Andre Iguodala, were members of the 2002 USA U18 team that lost to Venezuela in the semifinals before rebounding to claim bronze. All four are in the hunt for a spot on the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team. NBA stars from FIBA Americas such as Brazil s Leandro Barbosa and Argentina s Luis Scola played in the U18. 6 USA Comeback Falls Short, World Team Holds On For Victory Despite a record-high 35 points from the USA s (Bishop Gorman/Las Vegas, Nev.), the World Select Team captured an win over the USA Junior National Select Team in the 2012 Nike Hoop Summit at the Rose Garden in Portland, Ore. Down by as many as 18 points in the first half, the USA fought back to take a lead with 3:20 remaining. The International squad, however, closed on a 10-0 run to capture its fourth win and largest margin of victory. In addition to setting the event scoring mark, Muhammad tied the U.S. record for field goals made (12) and set a high for field goals attempted (19). (St. Anthony/North Bergen, N.J.) grabbed a U.S. record-tying 10 boards. A trio of double-digit scorers led the World Team. Canada s Andrew Wiggins tallied 20 points, including six attempted 3-pointers, tying the International record. China center Wang Zhelin added 19 points, and Croatia s Dario Saric scored 13 points to go with 14 boards, which tied the previous World Team high. Four players from the Hoop Summit have earned NBA Rookie of the Year honors -- Elton Brand shared the honor in 2000, also Tyreke Evans (2010), Derrick Rose (2009) and Kevin Durant (2008). What is the Nike Hoop Summit? The Nike Hoop Summit is an annual game played under FIBA rules that features the USA Junior National Select Team, which is comprised of high-school seniors, against the World Select Team, which includes top players from all over the world who are 19-years-old or younger. 8 What USA Players Are Saying In my opinion there is nothing better than representing your country. You are on a team full of great talent, and it is just you, your teammates and coaches, with everyone else cheering against you. It's a great feeling to show others that the USA is the best country when it comes to basketball. My advice to the guys would be to remember what you are playing for. After our camp we added each other on Twitter and Facebook, and we kept in contact. I made really good friends out here. We are all intense about basketball, and we all know the game. I think the first thing is we had a great group of guys who had a good chemistry and who all came to work every single day. The coaches were all great, they pushed us to be great and to come together.
