1 National Champions! Eagles No. 1 Nationally in Grade Point Average... The Eastern Washington University women s basketball team has been honored as the nation s No. 1 team in NCAA Division I on the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25. The Eagles had a grade point average for the season after ranking third nationally a year ago. Members of the team included Emily Boscacci, Brandie Bounds, Joanna Chadd, Raelynn Chaffee, Ashley Jamison, Felice Moore, Kathleen Nygaard, Julie Page, Tiffany Schmidt and Stephanie Ulmer. The hard work by the team members was stimulated by the support of head coach Wendy Schuller, who is entering her fourth season as head coach. She has led the Eagles to their best three seasons in over a decade. I am proud of our players for working so hard, Schuller said. A basketball championship is great, but the reason that we are here is academics. 2 Season Outlook Eagles are Loaded with Experience Despite Not Having a Superstar Standout Though the Eastern Washington University women s basketball program lost a key player in Kathleen Nygaard, Eagle head coach Wendy Schuller believes the Eagles in can do without a superstar standout. Nygaard was the only starter and letter-winner lost from last year s team as the Eagles return four starters and and a total of eight letter-winners. Last season, the Eagles finished overall and 5-9 in the Big Sky Conference, and for the third-straight season advanced to the semifinals of the Big Sky Conference Tournament. Schuller has led the Eagles to their best three seasons in over a decade. There is no superstar standout, she said of this year s team. Everyone can step up. We have a great group of young ladies and they understand the need to be a team. Even though they have just one senior All-Big Sky Conference honorable mention guard Stephanie Ulmer there are still high expectations for this year s Eagle squad. Besides Ulmer, the other starters returning include sophomore point guard Joanna Chadd, junior forward Brandie Bounds and junior forward Julie Page, who was last year s Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year. Four other juniors return, including Felice Moore, Ashley Jamison, Tiffany Schmidt and Raelynn Chaffee. Point guard Emily Boscacci redshirted as a freshman last season, but her year in the Eagle program will be an added plus. Schuller has high expectations in Ulmer, her lone senior. Last year, she was second on the team in scoring with Senior Stephanie Ulmer an 11.0 average while making 65-of-171 three-pointers for 38.0 percent. She has been very successful on the court, and we are looking to her to step up and be a leader on the team, Schuller said. I m proud of her effort this off-season and expect her to have a great senior season. Schuller is also looking for England import Julie Page to show continued improvement in her second year on the court for EWU. She averaged 10.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game as a sophomore, and chipped in 19 three-pointers and 56 assists. She is simply just a talented player, praised Schuller. She shoots the ball extremely well and has continually worked hard on the mental and physical aspects of the game. With that effort, she could be instrumental in our success this season. Junior Felice Moore is also expected to step up and help fill the void left by Nygaard, who averaged 18.6 points and 9.7 rebounds last season. The 6-foot-2 Moore started 12 of 29 games last year and averaged 20.3 minutes, 5.8 points and 4.1 rebounds while making 54.3 percent of her shots from the field. She is really our rock, Schuller said. She is big and strong and loves to play defense. She is willing to do whatever it takes to win and doesn t mind sacrificing herself for the team. Newcomers include a trio of freshmen Ashley Knight (Kent, Wash. - Garfield HS), Brittney Osborn (Enumclaw, Wash., HS), and Abby Johnson (Clarkston, Wash., HS). Also joining the Eagles are transfers Leah Gonnella and Jamie Chicane. Gonella, a product of Mead High School in Spokane, Wash., transferred from the University of Toledo in Ohio and will sit out in the season. Chicane is a 6-1 forward who played two years at Page 2

3 Season Outlook Junior Felice Moore Northwest College in Wyoming. The team has worked hard in the off season to ensure that every member understands the importance of working together, said Schuller. I believe that this team is ready to elevate our level of play. I know we ll continue to work hard as a team, and with that I expect we can have a satisfying season. This team believes in each other and is willing to pay the price to win. Schuller also has three new coaches on her staff for the season. Tom Webb comes to Eastern from Northwest College in Wyoming where he was head coach, and Michelle Skyles joins the Eagles after serving as a high school head coach in Idaho. Also new to the program is graduate assistant Scott Moore, who graduated from nearby Washington State University in I am excited about the new staff, said Schuller, They have a lot of energy and are going to be instrumental in helping us take our game to the next level. Eastern plays at Cal State Northridge on Nov. 19 to officially open the season, then faces national power Stanford on Nov. 23 at the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shoot-out in Anchorage, Alaska. Eastern will open its home season against Gonzaga in Cheney, Wash., on Nov. 30 at 7:05 p.m. EWU has 14 non-conference games this season and will play eight of those games on the road. The Eagles will open the Big Sky Conference season at Portland State on Jan. 15. We are not really looking ahead to any specific game, Schuller explained. We take it day by day, and when one game is over, then we Everyone can step up. We will look to the have a great group of young next. I am really excited about ladies and they understand this season and what we have is the need to be a team. the capability to Wendy Schuller achieve. Along with wanting her team to succeed on the court, Schuller also instills the importance of academics in her players. In 2004, her team was honored as the nation s No. 1 team in NCAA Division I on the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 Honor Roll. The Eagles had a grade point average for the season after ranking third nationally the previous year. Members of the team included Emily Boscacci, Brandie Bounds, Joanna Chadd, Raelynn Chaffee, Ashley Jamison, Felice Moore, Kathleen Nygaard, Julie Page, Tiffany Schmidt and Stephanie Ulmer. I am proud of our players for working so hard, Schuller said excitedly. A basketball championship is great, but the reason that we are here is academics. To win a national championship for GPA is a huge honor and I feel fortunate to be a part of such a special team. Junior Julie Page Page 3

5 Coaching Staff Head Coach WENDY SCHULLER Fourth Year as EWU Head Coach Fresno Pacific University, 1992, & Northwestern State University, 1993 With just one senior on her squad for the third-straight year, Eastern Washington University head coach Wendy Schuller is ready to lead her team to a strong campaign in her fourth season as the Eagles coach. Last season, the Eagles were after finishing the previous season. She has led the Eagles to their best three seasons in over a decade, with a three-year record of entering the campaign. The Eagles were 5-8 in the Big Sky Conference in 2004 to end the season with a sixth-place finish. Eastern defeated thirdseeded Weber State in the Big Sky Conference Tournament to advance to the semifinals for the third-straight year under Schuller. Also, Eastern led the conference in steals averaging 9.34 per game. We are continuing to progress toward some of the goals I set for the program when I took over, she said. Basketball-wise, this will be an important season for us to take the next step toward those goals. I am pleased with how we ve built this into a program that quality student-athletes want to be part of. Our staff is committed to continuing to consider both the quality of the player and the person. We are unique from many schools in that aspect. I want our young ladies to have a great college experience, and to do so, we ve composed our team with individuals from different walks of life, but with similar values, goals and dreams. Along with creating a winning program at Eastern, Schuller also believes strongly in the importance of education in these young women. The Eagle team was honored for hard work in the classroom as the nation s No. 1 team in NCAA Division I in the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25. The Eagles had a grade point average for the season after ranking third nationally the previous year. I am proud of our players for working so hard, Schuller said. A basketball championship is great, but the reason that we are here is academics. To win a national championship for GPA is a huge honor and I feel fortunate to be a part of such a special team. Schuller earned her bachelor s degree in business from Fresno Pacific University. As a shooting guard, she helped lead the Sunbirds to a 25-6 record and a No. 14 ranking in the NAIA. She was also selected as an NAIA Academic All-American in her senior season. In 1993, she began her coaching career at Northwestern State University in Louisiana as a graduate assistant while getting her master s degree in sports administration. She then became a full-time assistant, and her duties included defensive coordinator, primary recruiter, opponent preparation and general operations. In 1997, she was promoted to associate head coach to continue her duties for the program. Schuller coached for a total of nine seasons at NSU one of the top 30 winningest women s NCAA Division I programs in the country during the 1990s. During her tenure under James Smith, the most winning coach in Southland Conference history, the Lady Demons won 185 games, two conference titles and beat four Top 25 NCAA teams including Notre Dame. In the 2000 season, they had their sixth 20-plus win season and third in a row. In her last six years at NSU, Schuller also functioned as the senior woman administrator in the athletic department. Schuller says that Eastern is a great fit for her family. It s the perfect sized school with a great community atmosphere. I love the area, and it s just a great place to raise a family, said the Eagle coach. Dr. Jordan (EWU President Stephen Jordan) is a great supporter of athletics. I m also impressed with the faculty and their commitment to our mission to be a teaching University. Our players are really happy here. For a player who s serious about school and basketball, it s the perfect place. Eastern is just a little hidden gem out here. A native of Redlands, Calif., she and husband Mark have a 4-year-old son, Rory (born Oct. 16, 2000), and a 1-year-old daughter, Megan (born July 15, 2003). I am looking forward to the opportunity to learn the role of an assistant coach and to work with players of this caliber. I am thrilled to have a coach of the caliber of Michelle join our staff, Schuller said. Stephanie Ulmer made all five of her three-point attempts to finish the game with 18 points. Kathleen Nygaard also scored 18 points and had a game high 15 rebounds. We had to find a way to win because we ve lost so many close ones this year, Eagle head coach Wendy Schuller said. I was very proud of our team for finding a way to get it done against Gonzaga Graduated Senior KATHLEEN NYGAARD Adna, Wash. Kat has been a great player for the past two years, but now she is a great player every game and pretty much every minute. She definitely deserves all of the recognition she can get. 18 Season Review Eastern Plays in Third-Straight Big Sky Tournament Semifinal Game The Eastern Washington University women s basketball team (5-8, 13-16) ended with consistency as it made its third-consecutive Big Sky Conference Tournament appearance and played in its third-consecutive semifinal game. With a pre-season record of 7-6, Eastern began its season playing tight with its non-conference opponents. In six of the team s first eight games, the result was decided by eight points or less. The four losses in those first games occurred by a combined margin of 18 points, including losses of eight, five, four and one point. During that non-conference season, Eastern had the opportunity to compete against four local opponents in Washington State, Idaho, Boise State, and the men s/women s doubleheader against Gonzaga. In those games, Eastern fell to Washington State and Idaho by a combined total of six points while defeating Boise State and Gonzaga, also by a combined total of six points. Any time we can face a local rival, I think that it s a win-win situation, said Eagle head coach Wendy Schuller of the local matchups. We all try to recruit the local players, so when we face each other in games, it s really fun. Once the conference season began, the team set a new EWU standard by winning its first three conference games for the first time since becoming a Big Sky member in the season. The 3-0 league start was Eastern s best since beginning the season at 6-0 in the season as a member of the Mountain West Conference. Being 3-0 in Big Sky play for the first time said a lot in terms of the way that the players bought into our system, Schuller said of the start. I think that Eastern has always had pretty good players, but I don t know if they believed in the program at the time. After the strong league start, however, Eastern struggled as the team won just two additional regular season games. The slump included a six-game losing streak as the team entered the Big Sky Conference Tournament as the No. 6 Kathleen Nygaard seed. Page 18 Obviously we weren t going into the tournament playing very well, Schuller said. Our turnovers were our Achilles heel all season, and the problem was definitely across the whole team. We were the only team of the six on such a bad skid. The great thing about March Madness, though, is the fact that everything starts fresh. We had the ability to turn over a new leaf and go into the tournament like it was the start of a new season. Entering the tournament at the site of conference champion Montana, Eastern came in strong to defeat No. 3 Weber State in the tournament s quarterfinal match-up on March 11. The following day in the team s third-consecutive semifinal appearance, the Eagles fell to conference unbeaten Montana The team s sole senior, Kathleen Nygaard, led the team throughout the season and into the tournament. In the season statistics, she was the Big Sky s leading scorer and her team s leading rebounder. In the Big Sky Tournament, she led Eastern with 18 rebounds and 22 points. Throughout the season, Nygaard earned several honors which included two conference player of the week honors, her third consecutive first-team All-Big Sky Conference selection, a Kodak/ WBCA All-American Region No. 7 selection, an Academic All- America Team selection, and her second All-Big Sky Conference Tournament selection. It s sad to lose someone who is the entire package like Kat, Schuller said. Not only is she just an all-around great person, but she s been great in the classroom and on the court as well. On the court, her numbers speak for themselves. When she plays, she creates a quiet roar with her consistency and competitive nature. I ve really enjoyed having the opportunity to coach her over the past three years. Two other Eagles received conference recognition for their strong performances. The team s only junior, Stephanie Ulmer, was selected as an honorable mention to the All-Big Sky Conference Team while sophomore Julie Page was chosen as the Top Newcomer. Looking forward to the opportunity of coming back to the tournament next season with Ulmer, Page, and the rest of her team one year older, Schuller hopes to do some damage. She is excited about her team s maturity but knows the long road that lies ahead. The team s excuse of being young is now gone. We will be able to rely on our experience next year, but there s a lot of work to be done between now and then. Now it s day one, and we re starting all over. The loss of one of Eastern s best-ever players in Kat is going to be tough to recover from, though, so that off-season work is vital for us if we want to get somewhere next year.

27 Facilities/Support Eagle Weight Room The Eastern Strength and Conditioning Center recently received an equipment upgrade, thanks to $43,000 in private donations. Additions included eight half-rack/platform workstations where Eastern student-athletes work to develop the explosive power and functional strength needed for their sport. Each workstation consists of 900 pounds of free weights, two Olympic bars, one training bar, an adjustable bench and a 6 x8 Olympic platform. Eastern athletes are taught free weight Olympic style weightlifting movements and basic strength exercises which are incorporated into a year-round training plan. Eagle Academic Fact Four different Eagle sport programs were honored in the school year by their respective national coaches associations for some of the highest team grade point averages in the nation. Among them, the soccer team ranked second nationally among its peer institutions, women s basketball was third and volleyball was ninth. All four of those sports ranked first among Big Sky Conference schools. In an announcement made in fall 2004, the women s basketball squad had the highest GPA in the nation in ! 28 EWU/Big Sky Progress at Eastern Washington University... Fall quarter 2004 marked the 13th consecutive quarter of enrollment increases from the previous year at Eastern. Enrollment reached an all-time high in fall quarter 2004 with 9,775 students registered. For three consecutive years, Eastern Washington University was named as one of 201 colleges and universities in the publication Great Colleges for the Real World. Eastern ranks in the top 10 among public master degree-granting universities in the 15 western states in the new U.S. News & World Report s 2003 edition of America s Best Colleges. In the Kaplan/Newsweek College Catalog, Eastern is named to the list of Schools That Offer The Best Value (Quality of Education vs. Cost) For Your Tuition Dollar. Previously, Newsweek named EWU to its list of hidden treasures. Besides the new Donor Suites and Media Center at Woodward Field (pictured), other current building projects on campus include the Computing & Engineering Sciences Building, the State Patrol Crime Lab and the recently-completed State Archives Building. The State Archives Building is the first digital archives located on a college campus in the country. In the fall of 2002, Eastern opened a new residence hall, Brewster Hall. This four-story building is on the corner of Second and F streets in Cheney (two blocks from campus), and was the result of a public-private partnership with Spokane developer Rob Brewster, president of ConoverBond Development. In addition, three of Eastern s six residence halls have been renovated recently, as well as renovation of the Tawanka Commons dining hall. Monroe Hall, built in 1915 and one of the six buildings that make up the Eastern Washington University Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places, was reopened in 2001 after a $6.4 million renovation project. Making its debut on Sept. 18, 2004, at Woodward Field was the nearly $2 million Donor Suites and Media Center. In spring 2003, Eastern Athletic Director Scott Barnes announced an anonymous $1 million gift given to the project. The elevated structure includes nine donor suites on the first level and a new facility for media and game management functions on the second level. Plus, a total of 1,600 permanent seats were added in summer 2004 at the north end of Woodward Field, boosting capacity to about 8,600. As needed, temporary seating will be added to accommodate fan demand until the entire Woodward Field Renovation Project is completed. As the Big Sky Confer ence embarks on its 42nd season, it has solidified itself as one of the strongest intercollegiate athletic leagues in the West as well as the nation. The Big Sky is in its fourth year of the current eight-institution membership after Cal State Northridge left the conference following the school year. Big Sky members are now located in seven states that span from the Pacific Ocean to the Rocky Moun tains and from the Canadian to Mexican borders. League members can be found in Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah and Wash ington. Now in its 18th year as a conference mem ber, Eastern offi cial ly became a mem ber of the Big Sky on July 1, 1987, and began com pe tition that fall. The Eagles became the ninth mem ber of the confer ence. The Big Sky con ducts champi on ship competition in 14 sports for men and women including cross coun try, basket ball, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field, as well as volley ball, soccer and golf for women and football for men. Besides Eastern, the Big Sky also consists of Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho; the University of Montana in Missoula, Mont.; Mon tana State University in Bozeman, Mont; North ern Arizona Universi ty in Flagstaff, Ariz.; Portland State in Portland, Ore.; Sacramento State in Sacramento, Calif.; and Weber State Univer sity in Ogden, Utah. Formed in 1963, the Big Sky consisted of charter members Idaho, Idaho State, Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., Montana, Montana State and Weber State. Boise State and Northern Arizona joined the league in Nevada (Reno) was admitted in 1979, but left after the season to join the Big West Confer ence. Doug Fullerton is the conference commissioner, Ron Loghry is chief of staff and director of compliance. Jon Kasper and Jaynee Nadolski are information directors, and are assisted by Kelly Cooper. Doug Toole is the league s coordi nator of football officials and Marla Denham coordinates officials for all other sports. Janet Carpenter is the conference s executive assistant, Pat Curtis is the business manager and Diana Childs is the assistant business manager. Page 28
