1 GAME PREVIEW Opening Drive Two teams not in a very good mood will face off at the JTO on Sept. 9 as Mentor hosts Cincinnati St. Xavier. The Cardinals (1-1) are coming off a 49-7 loss at St. Ignatius while the Bombers fell to 0-2 after an overtime loss to Cincinnati Colerain. XAVIER NEWS, NOTES & HEADLINES THE INJURY BUG BITES THE BOMBERS The injuries are beginning to mount for the St Xavier Bombers. First, two of the team's top senior offensive linemen Matt Bockhorst, a Clemson commit, and Dominic Altimari (both 6- foot-5, 300 pounds) suffered torn ACLs at offseason summer showcases and are lost for the 2016 season.. Next is senior quarterback Sean Clifford, a Penn State commit. Clifford suffered a foot injury in week one against Bellflower (CA) St. John Bosco and missed the second half in the 34-0 blowout loss. Clifford did not play last week against Cincinnati Colerain, either, due to the foot injury. And finally during the rivalry game with the Cardinals, defensive back Louis Raines was injured and did not play the second half. NORTHEAST OHIO MEET SOUTHWEST OHIO Much like the rivalry between Cleveland St. Ignatius and Mentor has grown into one of the best public-vs-private school games in the state, so too has the annual match-up between the Cincinnati St Xavier Bombers and the Cincinnati Colerain Cardinals. Last week, before their annual match-up, the Athletic Directors at both schools agreed to extend the relationship at least two more seasons with a home-and-home series to be played in 2017 and Even with the loss last week, the Bombers still hold a edge in the all-time series. The trip to Parma on Sept. 3 was not one of them. St. Ignatius dominated every phase of the game and avenged a 2015 loss at the JTO by handing the Cardinals a 49-7 defeat. We got out-toughed tonight. We better figure out how to play with a sense of urgency and play like a good football team, Mentor coach Steve Trivisonno said. The Wildcats dominated time of possession and chewed up yardage on the ground in the first half, jumping out to a 14-0 lead. Mentor (1-1) was in the game and had momentum late in the second quarter after a 47-yard touchdown pass from Tadas Tatarunas to Derek Kleinhenz pulled the Cardinals to within a touchdown at On the ensuing possession, Mark Gordon had a sack and caused a fumble that was recovered by Mentor. However, an interception in the end zone by the Wildcats kept the Cardinals from tying the game before halftime. That was a big play (interception) and then we get the ball in the second half and don t do anything with it, Trivisonno said. We had so many three-and-outs, and it is hard to ask the defense to stay on the field that long. We just need to get better as a whole football team. Everyone needs to get better and play harder if we are going to be a good team. St. Ignatius (2-0) pulled away in the second half behind the running of James Andrews and Mark Bobinski. The Wildcats scored three touchdowns in the third quarter to push out to a 35-7 advantage. The Wildcats had 445 yards of offense and 27 first downs to just 146 yards and eight first downs for Mentor. St. Ignatius did not punt in the game. The one positive Trivisonno said he took from the night was Kleinhenz, who not only had a TD catch, but punted six times for a near 38-yards per kick average. 7 49

With four regions, Division I moves back into the same format as Divisions II through VII, with a greater emphasis on the regional championship games and decreased travel. The proposal, which came jointly from the OHSAA staff and the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association, does not change the number of Division I qualifiers (32, same as other divisions), but will have its tournament field comprised of eight qualifiers coming from each of four regions, rather than 16 teams from two regions, as has been done beginning in 2013 when the OHSAA expanded the football playoffs to seven Divisions and reduced the number of schools in Division I to only the largest 72 schools in Ohio. For the last three years, the regional finals in Division I were the fourth round, which also served as the state semifinals. Each of the four regions in Division I in 2016 will contain 18 schools and will qualify the top eight to the playoffs. Region 1 will include: MENTOR, Austintown Fitch, Berea-Midpark, Canton McKinley, Canton GlenOak, Cleveland John Marshall, Cleveland Rhodes, Cleveland Heights, Cuyahoga Falls, Euclid, Lakewood, Massillon Jackson, North Canton Hoover, St. Edward, St. Ignatiius, Shaker Heights, Solon, Stow. 4 Jerome T Osborne, Sr Stadium - The JTO CARDINALS HAVE WON 18 STRAIGHT AND 34 OF THE LAST 35 GAMES PLAYED AT THE JTO 2016 Quick Facts MENTOR HIGH SCHOOL Mentor feels at home at Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium as much as any team feels at home in the entire state of Ohio, having only lost four times in ten years since 2006 and going undefeated at home in the playoffs over that period. This fall will be the 11th year since the full renovation of the Cardinals home stadium, and the third on the new turf installed prior to the 2014 campaign. The back wall under the press box includes a ring of honor that highlights some of the greatest coaches, players and teams that have ever graced the home field at Mentor, including several NFL players and two Mr. Football winners in Ohio - Bart Tanski (2007) and Mitch Trubisky (2012). The field turf installed at the JTO prior to the 2014 season feature red end zones, silver sideline boxes and a 20-yard wide Cardinal emblem at midfield that stretches from 40-yard line to the other 40. Mentor is an awe-sticking 55-4 on the turf from , including a perfect 8-0 record in Division I first-round playoff games at the JTO. Cardinals athletic director Jeff Cassella points out the turfed field is utilized by more than just the varsity football team. The junior varsity and freshmen football teams call the surface home, but so does soccer, lacrosse and other programs in the school such as the baseball and softball teams, who practiced on the JTO surface when their playing fields were too wet. Additionally, the Mentor youth football games are played at the JTO. 5 Cardinals News, Notes, & Headlines Superhero Jacob BIG PLAY OFFENSE The Mentor Caridnals had two big touchdown plays in the week 1 (Aug. 26) win over the visiting Massillon Washington Tigers. Senior RB Isaiah Gullick had a 78-yard touchdown run in the first quarter against the Tigers. The 78-yard touchdown run is the longest touchdown run for a Cardinal in nearly four seasons. On Sept. 21, 2012, Conner Krizancic sprinted 86y yards for a touchdown against the Parma Redmen. Believe it or not, the passing game outdid Gullick's touchdown run. Junior WR Logan Shea completed a 90-yard touchdown pass to senior WR Ryan Hagan late in the second quarter. That is the longest touchdown pass for the Cardinals since Conner Krizancic connected with Brandon Fritts on a 91-yard touchdown pass against the Brunswick Blue Devils on October 18, Current junior QB Tadas Tatarunas had an 81-yard TD pass to Jason Blizzard on October 30th last season at Ely Stadium against the Pioneers. STREAKING AT THE JTO The Mentor Cardinals have now won 18 in a row at home following the victory over the Massillon Washington Tigers on Aug. 26. In the fall of 1985, then 21-year old Urban Meyer took control of the defense backs for the Bombers. Current Bombers head coach Steve Specht was a senior captain and running back and defensive back under Meyer's direction. The 57 points are the fourth-most points ever surrendered by a Massillon team, dating back to the first year of football at Washington High School in In 2007, the Mentor Cardinals scored 56 points against the Massillon Tigers (W,56-52). The 56 point scored by the Cardinals is now fifth-most points ever scored by an opponent against the Tigers. Mentor is the only school to score 50 or more twice on the Tigers and the Cardinals, along with St. Ignatius (week 2 opponent), are the only two teams from Northeast Ohio to score more than 40 points in a game against Massillon Minds weren t 100 percent on football at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium on Aug. 26, and that was perfectly all right. Students dressed as superheroes and cheerleaders donned shirts that read Superhero Jacob in honor of Jacob Goss, and elementary school student in Mentor who recently died of cancer. A message was delivered over the loud speaker prior to the Mentor-Massillon game, and a moment of silence was observed in honor of Jacob. He was a big fan of super heroes, so that s where the Superhero Jacob came from tonight, Mentor athletic director Jeff Cassella told the News-Herald. I think he was an inspiration to our kids and the fight battle he went through. Our kids saw that and understood that. Our kids and community wanted to honor him and the struggle he went through. Coach Steve Trivisonno said he was proud of the students, his players and the entire community for the support they showed the Goss family. "We talked to our guys about it and they understand how lucky we all are to be able to do the things we do in school and in sports and in life," Trivisonno said. "Life isn't fair. A kid shouldn't have to go through that and a family should never have to lose a child that young. Hopefully one day this horrible disease will be cured." CARDINALS TIME MACHINE - - SEPTEMBER 4,2015: CARDINALS 63, WILDCATS 56 What? You expected a low-scoring, boring, average game at the JTO on Sept. 4? The Cardinals racked up 823 yards of offense and scoring nine touchdowns against the perennial power Wildcats,. Malik Porter caught a 10-yard touchdown pass with 8 seconds to play in regulation as the Mentor defeated St. Ignatius, 63-56, in the latest edition of what has become a classic series. The Mentor win over St. Ignatius was easily the best game in the state in Week with 1,443 yards of total offense on 150 plays from scrimmage and 57 first downs. Porter s game-winning catch came after sophomore quarterback Tadas Tatarunas who threw for 523 yards and four touchdowns - was forced to scramble. Porter improvised in the end zone to get open. Th Cardinals (2-0) led midway through the second quarter, but the Wildcats (1-1) pulled within early in the third. The teams were tied at 49 and 56 in the second half. Cardinals wide receiver Jason Blizzard had 14 catches for 342 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another. Mentor running back Alex Mathews gained 235 yards on 31 carries against the Wildcats. 6 Cardinals News, Notes, & Headlines Polls & Rankings FINDING THE ENDZONE OVERTIME GAMES FOR THE CARDINALS NEWS HERALD TOP OF THE CROP - SEPT 6 The Mentor Cardinals have now scored at least one touchdown in 89 consecutive games dating back to the first week of the 2009 season (Aug 28, 2009 a win against the St Edward Eagles). The last time the Cardinals did not find the endzone was in the 2008 OHSAA regional semifinal game against the Strongsville Mustangs; a 17-3 loss at Byers Field. Dating back to 2005, the Cardinals have scored at least one touchdown in 139 of the last 141 games A high-powered offense and a stingy defense can certainly be a receipe for success, and the Mentor Cardinals are no exception Since the start of the 1997 season, the Cardinals are an eyepopping 75-1 when the team scores 40 or more points in a game. (The only loss came in the 2013 state championship game, a loss to Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller. Even when the 20 point mark is reached by Mentor, the Cardinals are (0.858) over the last 20 seasons. On the other side the of the ball, the Cardinals defense is just as impressive. When the Cardinals hold an opponent to single digits, Mentor is 69-0 under head coach Steve Trivisonno. When holding opponents under 20 points, the team is (0.953) since OHSAA RULE CHANGES FOR 2016 SEASON The free blocking zone is no longer free for Ohio high school football players. The OHSAA announced a football rule change earlier this year, altering the way officials call clipping for the 2016 season. Officials can flag clipping in any situation, regardless of where it occurs on the field. Prior to this season, clipping was allowed in the free blocking zone that covered three yards beyond the line of scrimmage in both directions and four yards on either side of the snap. The penalty for clipping remains 15 yards. The elimination of clipping from high school football is the latest attempt to reduce the risk of injury made by the sport at that level. On the receiving end of the touchdown was RJ Fulmer. Jackson Paglio also scored for the Cardinals and Varney Spansel added valuable rushing yards on the ground in a crucial drive in the 4th quarter. The Mentor defense, led by Paglio, Kyle Bischof, and Justin Satterfield battled all game and held tough against a potent Wildcat offense. 7th Grade Results and Summary (2-0) A 31 H Euclid Gold W The Shore 7th Grade football team got their second win of the season against Euclid Gold Offensively, the Cardinals could not be stopped. Sean Allgood hauled in three touchdowns. Evan Harper had a touchdown grab. Brayden Molinyawe led the way on the ground. Defensively the Cardinals shut down Euclid's offense for three quarters, not allowing any points until the fourth quarter. The junior from Mentor, Ohio, endured more than his share of shaky moments Saturday as UNC kicked off the 2016 season with a loss against Georgia in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game at the GeorgiaDome. But statistically, Trubisky s 24-for-40 night passing for 156 yards and no interceptions wasn t all that bad, especially considering it was against the nation s preseason 18th-ranked team. I was pleased with his poise, UNC coach Larry Fedora said. The first thing we asked him to do was take care of the football, and I don t ever remember him throwing the ball into any coverage or anything like that. He got a little antsy a couple of times. But I think he ll be fine going forward. I really do. Trubisky has been a source of much conversation since he signed with the Tar Heels in 2013 after being named Mr. Football in the state of Ohio. But after a redshirt freshman year, he spent the next two seasons working behind record-setting Marquise Williams. The excitement grew, however, each time Trubisky got in a game and played impressively, especially last season when he completed 40 of 47 passes for six touchdowns. But Saturday was Trubisky s first real test as a starter and it came under some extraordinary conditions. Pressure packed The Chick-fil-A Kickoff was one of several high-profile opening games Saturday being broadcast nationally, and it provided a chance for North Carolina to make a statement about its football program against a highprofile opponent. It was also played in a hostile environment at the Georgia Dome, where a large portion of the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game record crowd of 75,405 were rooting for the Bulldogs. I thought Mitch played well, given the circumstances, receiver and Trubisky s roommate Ryan Switzer said. He was thrown in there and made some mistakes. I m sure there are some throws he d like to have back. But ultimately this will make him a better player. The one pass Trubisky would definitely like to take back occurred late in the third period. With UNC s offense backed up to its own 4-yard line and facing a secondand-long play, Trubisky dropped back into the end zone to attempt a pass. His throw found running back Elijah Hood, but Hood was still standing in the end zone, too. Georgia s defense quickly gang tackled Hood for a safety that sparked an emotional turnaround for the Bulldogs. That was a bizarre play, Trubisky said. I was trying to burn the ball. I should have thrown it at Elijah s feet, but he actually made a pretty good catch. I was hoping he would drop it so we could punt. But that was a mistake on my part, and I have to learn from it. 9 Mentor Cardinals Head Coach - Steve Trivisonno Steve Trivisonno had a goal when he graduated from Mentor in Mentor Cardinals All Time Coaching Records I knew when I left that someday I wanted to come back and help make this a great football program, Trivisonno said. Thirty-five years later, he is still striving to keep the scarlet and gray among the elite of all programs in the state of Ohio. Along with success, innovation and consistency, Trivisonno has been a shining example of longevity in a business that does not always show patience. The man in charge of Mentor s consistent and successful football program will lead his team on to the field for the season opener Aug. 26 against visiting Massillon Washington. It will be the 20 th time he has done so. In this his 20 th season as head coach at his alma mater, Trivisonno is as passionate about the game as when he played in the late 70s and early 80s at Mentor, and when he was a young up-and-coming assistant with the Cardinals in the 90s. We ve been lucky to have great kids, great coaches to work with, Trivisonno said. I can t believe it has been 20 years. It seems like yesterday. Trivisonno left Mentor after graduation and went on to play defensive back at Bowling Green. After graduating from BG in 1985, Trivisonno went to Madison for two years before returning to Mentor. He was an assistant under Dick Kirschbaum and eventually took over for Mike Pavlansky prior to the 1997 season. Trivisonno has 166 career victories, three Division I state runner-up finishes, he has coached two Mr. Football winners in the state of Ohio and he has seen several of his players go on to earn D-I college scholarships. A state title remains the goal and is always motivation, but Trivisonno says it does not define the program or his legacy. We want to be a consistent, successful football team and I think we have done that. And of course we want to bust our butts to win a state title. That s why you play. That s why you work hard in January to get to play in December, Trivisonno said. A state title is always the goal, but it isn t the end-all if we ever win it or not. We work hard not only for ourselves but for all the guys who came before us. Trivisonno has earned several individual honors during his tenure at Mentor and recently reached the 150-win milestone. As for what starting his 20 th season as head coach of the Cardinals means to him, Trivisonno didn t take long to answer. The trip to Parma on Sept. 3 was not one of them. St. Ignatius dominated every phase of the game and avenged a 2015 loss at the JTO by handing the Cardinals a 49-7 defeat. We got out-toughed tonight. We better figure out how to play with a sense of urgency and play like a good football team, Mentor coach Steve Trivisonno said. First impressions are usually lasting ones. Isaiah Gullick and the Mentor Cardinals certainly left a lasting imprint on the 2016 season with a resounding performance in the opener against visiting Massillon on Aug. 26. Making his first varsity start, Gullick - a 5-foot-9, 180-pound senior - ran for 238 yards and five touchdowns, leading Mentor to a win over the Tigers in front of more than 7,000 fans at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium. I prayed all the time I d be able to show my talents, Gullick said. I had my chance tonight, and I m thankful for it. I m very blessed. Gullick who overcame injury as a sophomore and bided his time behind All-Ohioan Alex Mathews as a junior - scored on touchdown runs of 2, 78, 4 and 20 yards. He also caught an 18-yard touchdown pass on a screen from quarterback Tadas Tatarunas. Before leaving the field after the game, Gullick pulled the Mentor offensive linemen together and thanked them one by one. I m nothing without my teammates and especially those guys, Gullick said of his line. They believe in what I can do, and I believe in what they can do. The Wildcats dominated time of possession and chewed up yardage on the ground in the first half, jumping out to a 14-0 lead. Mentor (1-1) was in the game and had momentum late in the second quarter after a 47-yard touchdown pass from Tadas Tatarunas to Derek Kleinhenz pulled the Cardinals to within a touchdown at On the ensuing possession, Mark Gordon had a sack and caused a fumble that was recovered by Mentor. However, an interception in the end zone by the Wildcats kept the Cardinals from tying the game before halftime. That was a big play (interception) and then we get the ball in the second half and don t do anything with it, Trivisonno said. We had so many three-and-outs, and it is hard to ask the defense to stay on the field that long. We just need to get better as a whole football team. Everyone needs to get better and play harder if we are going to be a good team. St. Ignatius (2-0) pulled away in the second half behind the running of James Andrews and Mark Bobinski. The Wildcats scored three touchdowns in the third quarter to push out to a 35-7 advantage. The Wildcats had 445 yards of offense and 27 first downs to just 146 yards and eight first downs for Mentor. St. Ignatius did not punt in the game. The one positive Trivisonno said he took from the night was Kleinhenz, who not only had a TD catch, but punted six times for a near 38-yards per kick average. Cardinals coach Steve Trivisonno, starting his 20th season at the helm of his alma mater, wasn t all that surprised with Gullick s effort. You guys didn t believe me. I told you he was pretty good, Trivisonno said. He bided his time. He didn t complain. He worked hard, got his chance and did a great job. I m proud of him. When Massillon made its big push in the second half, it was Gullick who answered for the scarlet and gray. After Nate Gregg s 21-yard field goal to start the fourth quarter made it 36-24, Gullick ripped off a 50-yard run to put his team deep into Massillon territory. A few plays later, he scored on the screen pass from Tatarunas. Massillon came right back with a touchdown pass from Seth Blankenship to Austin Jasinski to make it 43-31, but Gullick tacked on two more touchdown runs to finish off the Tigers. The game started off with three touchdowns being scored in the first 2 minutes, 5 seconds of the game, including a span of three touchdowns in a span of four offensive plays. When Will Laganke scooped up a fumble and raced 66 yards for a touchdown, Mentor had a 20-7 lead in the first quarter. It was a 29-7 halftime lead when Ryan Hagan hauled in a 90-yard halfback pass from Logan Shea. That play was huge, Trivisonno said. I thought it was the right time to run it and the guys executed. Massillon methodically got back into the game, thanks in large part to senior receiver Austin Jasinski. Not only did the 6- foot-1, 163-pounder have 14 catches for 220 yards and three touchdowns, but he also intercepted a pair passes. Mentor outgained Massillon, Tatarunas completed 5 of 16 passes for 137 yards, but two went for touchdowns. The opening-game loss was Massillon s first since 2010
