1 GAME PREVIEW Opening Drive The entire 2016 season basically comes down to 48 minutes at the JTO on the last day of September for the Mentor Cardinals. If Mentor wants to make a push for the postseason or a GCC championship, a win over visiting Solon on Sept. 30 is a must. GameDay 360 Solon COMETS 4-1 Overall; 2-0 Greater Cleveland Conference Head Coach: Jim McQuaide (14th season, 28th season overall) NOTE: Comets have now defeated all seven other teams in the GCC 4-1 The Cardinals are 2-3 and coming off a 41-0 win over Shaker Heights. The Comets are 4-1 and easily handled a talented Euclid team in Week 5 that beat Mentor the week before. Statistically, the Comets have looked very good in The defense has held opponents to an average of 12 points per game and has only given up 553 yards passing through five contests. Solon has a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown, a punt returned for a touchdown and zero points given up by the Comets in the second quarter all season. Fast starts and an average of 205 yards passing in a game highlights Solon s offensive efficiency in Joe Bubonics has been stellar at QB for the Comets, throwing for 888 yards and 12 TDs with just one interception. Darryl Sinclair, Taj Ward and Jake McCurry make up a very deep and balanced wide receiver corps. Thomas Wilks has led the way on the ground for Solon with eight touchdowns. Defensively, Solon hasn t allowed more than 21 points in a game this season. Matt Brown, Melvin Jackson and Ryan McCurry have been impact players this season for the Comets on defense. The Mentor offense found a rhythm in a loss to Euclid in Week 4 and continued to play well last week vs. Shaker Heights. Senior running back Isaiah Gullick rushed for four touchdowns in the first half and junior QB Tadas Tatarunas threw for a TD for the Cardinals. Steve Baird has emerged as a go-to receiver for Mentor, and the offensive line continues to make big plays to allow the skill athletes to chew up yardage. Defensively, the Cardinals made life tough on Shaker Heights and quarterback Jamir Dismukes. The front seven led by Mark Gordon, Kyle Ulshafer, Noah Potter and Ryan Bischof among others was dominant at the point of attack. In the secondary, Michael Ballentine and Mike Bray had big nights vs. the Raiders. The entire defense will have its hands full trying to slow down Bubonics and the high-powered Solon attack on the turf at the JTO. TRIV TALKING "I still think this is very talented team and can be dangerous moving forward. That hasn't changed and won't change. But we need to go out and play well and if we don't we won't be playing in Week 11." Covering the Cards Since 2009, former News-Herald high school sports reporter Bill Tilton has hosted a live weekly high school sports talk show featuring interviews with players and coaches, trivia contests and giveaways at Hooley House in Mentor on Monday nights. Regular guests on "Varsity Chalk Talk have included Cardinals head coach Steve Trivisonno and numerous Mentor players. Varsity Chalk Talk airs live at Hooley House in Mentor on Mondays (7-9pm) and will be streamed live on ESPNCleveland.com and edited down and aired on KNR AM as part of the Friday night High School Hysteria pregame. WINT-AM 1330 will air three Mentor football team games for the 2016 season (Massillon, Euclid and Medina). The select games will be broadcast overthe-air on WINT-AM 1330 and streamed live at wintradio.com. This year is no different. In 2016, the Comets are 4-0 when scoring first in the game. The lone loss of the season so far came when the Stow Bulldogs took an early 7-0 lead on Solon in week 3. The inverse stat - when the opponent scores first - puts the Comets in an uphill battle. In the same time frame, going back to the start of the 2003 season, Solon is just when the opponent gets on the board first. FIRST HALF DOMINANCE IN 2016 Solon is outscoring its opponents in the first half of the five games this season. In fact, none of the five opponents this season has scored in the 2nd quarter - the Comets have posted 66 points in that frame. SOLON LIKING THE GCC Since the new Greater Cleveland Conference formed prior to the 2015 season, the Comets have taken a liking to their new conference home. Solon has won eight of the nine games it has played in the conference since the start of last season, and has beaten every team in the league at least once. The Cardinals needed a win and needed one in the worst way Mentor got what it was looking for in an impressive way, dominating Shaker Heights, 41-0, in a game with a running clock in the second half. Senior Isaiah Gullick rushed for 80 yards on 16 carries and scored four touchdowns in the first half as the Cardinals essentially had the game won by halftime, leading 34-0 at the break. Mentor had lost three straight to St. Ignatius, St. Xavier and Euclid in a 12-day stretch. This was good for us. This will really get us going, Gullick said. Junior QB Tadas Tatarunas had an efficient night directing the Mentor offense, completing 15 of 21 passes for 187 yards and one TD. I thought we played very well, Mentor coach Steve Trivisonno said. It was good to see after some rough games we ve had recently. Isaiah ran the ball well, and I thought we played well up front. Defensively we played well. Last year he (Shaker Heights quarterback Jamir Dismukes) gave us some trouble. The elusive Red Raiders QB passed for 84 yards and ran for 48, but the Cardinals sacked him five times. As a team, Mentor held Shaker Heights to 183 total yards and eight first downs. Mentor moved the ball throughout the first half with a mix of short passes and Gullick runs. Gullick finished off an 11-play, 80-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge to start the game, and added a 19-yard scoring jaunt to culminate a six-play, 57-yard drive later in the first quarter. The Cardinals put the game away with a 20-point second quarter, using two turnovers and a big punt return to start all three scoring drives in Shaker Heights territory. Ryan Bischof recovered a fumble, and Tommy Klepczyk picked off a pass, both leading to TDs for Mentor. Two more Gullick scoring runs, of 6 and 26 yards, were sandwiched around a nifty 2-yard touchdown pass in which Tatarunas faked a handoff to Gullick and passed to a wide-open Dan Adams for the score. Adams had a breakout game for the Cardinals, catching four passes for 56 yards to lead nine Mentor receivers. He s a sophomore, and he stepped up and made some nice plays for us, Trivisonno said of Adams. Mentor is 2-3 after a stretch of three losses to elite opponents in 12 days. The Cardinals host Solon on Sept. 30 in a critical GCC matchup of perennial title contenders in the conference. Oh, we d better be ready Trivisonno said in response to a query about the Week 6 showdown with the Comets. This is what we ve worked for. This obviously means a lot for us.

With four regions, Division I moves back into the same format as Divisions II through VII, with a greater emphasis on the regional championship games and decreased travel. The proposal, which came jointly from the OHSAA staff and the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association, does not change the number of Division I qualifiers (32, same as other divisions), but will have its tournament field comprised of eight qualifiers coming from each of four regions, rather than 16 teams from two regions, as has been done beginning in 2013 when the OHSAA expanded the football playoffs to seven Divisions and reduced the number of schools in Division I to only the largest 72 schools in Ohio. For the last three years, the regional finals in Division I were the fourth round, which also served as the state semifinals. Each of the four regions in Division I in 2016 will contain 18 schools and will qualify the top eight to the playoffs. Region 1 will include: MENTOR, Austintown Fitch, Berea-Midpark, Canton McKinley, Canton GlenOak, Cleveland John Marshall, Cleveland Rhodes, Cleveland Heights, Cuyahoga Falls, Euclid, Lakewood, Massillon Jackson, North Canton Hoover, St. Edward, St. Ignatiius, Shaker Heights, Solon, Stow. Of note, only 22 of Ohio s 88 counties currently have a Division I football school (Mentor is Lake County's only Divisiion I team), thus Division I will have three split counties (Cuyahoga, Franklin and Montgomery) in order to equally place 18 teams into each region. 4 Jerome T Osborne, Sr Stadium - The JTO NEW STREAK STARTED ON SEPT. 23. CARDS HAVE HAD 18 & 20 GAME WIN STREAKS 2016 Quick Facts MENTOR HIGH SCHOOL Mentor feels at home at Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium as much as any team feels at home in the entire state of Ohio, having only lost five times in ten years since 2006 and going undefeated at home in the playoffs over that period. This fall will be the 11th year since the full renovation of the Cardinals home stadium, and the third on the new turf installed prior to the 2014 campaign. The back wall under the press box includes a ring of honor that highlights some of the greatest coaches, players and teams that have ever graced the home field at Mentor, including several NFL players and two Mr. Football winners in Ohio - Bart Tanski (2007) and Mitch Trubisky (2012). The field turf installed at the JTO prior to the 2014 season feature red end zones, silver sideline boxes and a 20-yard wide Cardinal emblem at midfield that stretches from 40-yard line to the other 40. Mentor is an awe-sticking 56-5 on the turf from , including a perfect 8-0 record in Division I first-round playoff games at the JTO. Cardinals athletic director Jeff Cassella points out the turfed field is utilized by more than just the varsity football team. The junior varsity and freshmen football teams call the surface home, but so does soccer, lacrosse and other programs in the school such as the baseball and softball teams, who practiced on the JTO surface when their playing fields were too wet. Additionally, the Mentor youth football games are played at the JTO. The 8,000-seat facility is one of the finest in Northeast Ohio and has been home to several playoff games over the past few seasons. Lake Catholic also plays its home games at the JTO. 5 BIG PLAY OFFENSE Cardinals News, Notes, & Headlines The Mentor Caridnals had two big touchdown plays in the week 1 (Aug. 26) win over the visiting Massillon Washington Tigers. Senior RB Isaiah Gullick had a 78-yard touchdown run in the first quarter against the Tigers. The 78-yard touchdown run is the longest touchdown run for a Cardinal in nearly four seasons. On Sept. 21, 2012, Conner Krizancic sprinted 86y yards for a touchdown against the Parma Redmen. Believe it or not, the passing game outdid Gullick's touchdown run. Junior WR Logan Shea completed a 90-yard touchdown pass to senior WR Ryan Hagan late in the second quarter. That is the longest touchdown pass for the Cardinals since Conner Krizancic connected with Brandon Fritts on a 91-yard touchdown pass against the Brunswick Blue Devils on October 18, Current junior QB Tadas Tatarunas had an 81-yard TD pass to Jason Blizzard on October 30th last season at Ely Stadium against the Pioneers. GULLICK GOES BACK TO BACK CENTURY MARK Cardinals senior RB Isaiah Gullick rushed for 100 or more yards in back to back games for the first time this season. Gullick tallied 125 yards against St Xavier and 127 yards vs Euclid. BAIRD GRABS THREE TOUCHDOWNS Senior wide receiver Steven Baird pulled in three touchdown passes in the week 4 loss to Euclid at Sparky DiBiasio Stadium - 34 yards, 6 yards and 20 yards. That is the first time a Cardinals player had three or more receiving touchdowns in a game since November 12, 2012 in a regional quarterfinal game at Byers Field. Brandon Fritts had four touchdown grabs in that game against the St Edward Eagles. 'Unit' Defines D-Line MENTOR D-LINE IS A SUM OF PARTS The Mentor defensive line is as talented a group of frontline players as the Cardinals have had in a long time. Where do they play? What position do they play? It really doesn t matter. The thing is they are all interchangeable. We have been able to move some guys around and they don t care where they play, Mentor defensive coordinator Jim Funk said. The Cardinals (2-3) went up against some of the top offenses in Ohio in the first five weeks, facing St. Ignatius, Cincinnati St. Xavier and Euclid in 12 days. The defensive line learned sometimes the hard way what is needed to be successful and what it is going to take to win the next five games to get into the postseason. These guys learned to battle. We haven t had everyone yet with Caleb (Rykaczewski) missing with an illness, but they are ready to be great and it is a group that has a lot of potential, Mentor coach Steve Trivisonno said. Mark Gordon, Noah Potter, Kyle Ulshafer and Nick Hardman have been key to the front seven thus far. Rykaczewski has missed the first half of the season battling mononucleosis, but his return against Solon in a critical Week 6 matchup at the JTO will provide depth and talent to the Mentor defense. STREAK COMES TO AN END The Mentor Cardinals had won 18 in a row at home between October 4, 2013 and August 26, The streak reached 18 victories with a win over the Massillon Washington Tigers on Aug. 26. The streak ended on Sept. 9 with a loss to St. Xavier. Since the renovations were completed at the stadium, and the complex renamed in honor of Jerome T Osborne, Sr, the Cardinals are an eye-popping 56-5 at home - - or a 94% winning percentage. MAKING HISTORY AGAINST THE TIGERS On Aug. 26, the Mentor Cardinals posted 57 points against the Massillon Washington Tigers, in a week 1 victory. The 57 points are the fourth-most points ever surrendered by a Massillon team, dating back to the first year of football at Washington High School in In 2007, the Mentor Cardinals scored 56 points against the Massillon Tigers (W,56-52). The 56 point scored by the Cardinals is now fifth-most points ever scored by an opponent against the Tigers. With Caleb back, we can put guys back where they need to be but these guys are great about doing their job no matter where we ask them to play, Funk said. The thing is they need to play harder every play and every snap and they know that. Potter is a mega-talented sophomore who has limitless potential. The rest of the defensive line is comprised of seniors who are playmakers and have the opportunity to allow linebacker Ryan Bischof and the secondary a chance to make big impacts on every play from scrimmage. This group is really good because we have speed, we have strength and we can do a lot of things well, Gordon said. We look back and we know how good the defensive line has been here and we want to set the bar that high and even higher MENTOR CARDINALS CAPTAINS The Mentor Cardinals will have five captains for the 2016 season * Senior DB Michael Ballentine * Senior WR Shane McClure * Senior DL Caleb Rykaczewski * Senior LB Ryan Bischof * Senior DL Mark Gordon THIS DATE IN SPORTS HISTORY - SEPTEMBER 30 Most Points Scored by an Opponent vs Massillon T Dayton Steele T Steubenville Barberton MENTOR CARDINALS T MENTOR CARDINALS T Akron St. Vincent-St Mary In 126 years of football at Massillon, only 22 times has an opponet scored more than 40 points in a game. Mentor is the only school to score 50 or more twice on the Tigers and the Cardinals, along with St. Ignatius (week 2 opponent), are the only two teams from Northeast Ohio to score more than 40 points in a game against Massillon Ulshafer has been consistent inside as a physical run stopper and a force on every play for Mentor. Potter and Gordon are talented ends who have been willing to sacrifice and play at tackle inside when asked. Hardman is the smallest of the group, but uses his athleticism and skill to make plays for the Cards. Once we have them all together, we have depth and we can rotate some guys in and get them fresh, Trivisonno said. Rykaczewski is a 6-foot-4, 240-pound enforcer in the middle that Mentor has missed. Potter is 6-5, 240 pounds and still learning techniques with a chance to be as good as any edge rusher that the Cards have had. Ulshafer is 6-2, 290 and comes to play on every snap. Gordon is a 6-3, 240-pound game changer and Hardman is small by comparison, but has been huge for the defense this season in his ability to create havoc The Cleveland Browns set a franchis record by allowing 11 sacks in a 10-6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Browns QB Paul McDonald is sacked 11 times in 49 drop backs. The lone Cleveland offense comes from Matt Bahr, who kicks two field goals. The Browns slipped to 1-4 on the season with the loss and three weeks later, owner Art Modell fires head coach Sam Rutigliano and replaces him with defensive coordinator Marty Schottenheimer. Under Schottenheimer, the Browns finish the second half of the 1984 season 4-4. The Browns had the 7th pick in the NFL draft, which they traded to the Bills for the #1 pick in the NFL Supplemental draft and selected Bernie Kosar. Stadium Closings The Minnesota Twins play the final game at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington, Minn, losing 5-2 to the Kansas City Royals. The Twins would move downtown into the Metrodome for the 1982 season. Browns fans are not sad to see the Met go, it was the sight of one of the most heartbreaking losses in team history, when Vikings QB connected with WR Ahmad Rashad to win a game in mid December of The Chicago White Sox play the game in 'Old' Comisky Park. The team moves across the street to the 'New' Comisky the following spring If we do our job up front, the sky is the limit for this team. And we have great chemistry which helps, Ulshafer said. Rykaczewski said he is ready to get back into the lineup, but he has spent his time on the sideline effectively. The guys call me Coach Caleb, and now I am looking forward to getting back in there with them, Rykaczewski said. Potter, who has two older brothers who are Division I athletes (Caleb baseball at West Virginia, Micah a Ohio State basketball recruit), said he has learned a lot from the older players on the defensive line. This game against Solon is huge for us, we know what is expected of us and as long as we all do our jobs we will be fine, Potter said.

6 Cardinals News, Notes, & Headlines Polls & Rankings FINDING THE ENDZONE OVERTIME GAMES FOR THE CARDINALS NEWS HERALD TOP OF THE CROP - SEPT 27 The Mentor Cardinals have now scored at least one touchdown in 92 consecutive games dating back to the first week of the 2009 season (Aug 28, 2009 a win against the St Edward Eagles). The last time the Cardinals did not find the endzone was in the 2008 OHSAA regional semifinal game against the Strongsville Mustangs; a 17-3 loss at Byers Field. Dating back to 2005, the Cardinals have scored at least one touchdown in 142 of the last 144 games A high-powered offense and a stingy defense can certainly be a receipe for success, and the Mentor Cardinals are no exception Since the start of the 1997 season, the Cardinals are an eyepopping 76-1 when the team scores 40 or more points in a game. (The only loss came in the 2013 state championship game, a loss to Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller. Even when the 20 point mark is reached by Mentor, the Cardinals are (0.858) over the last 20 seasons. On the other side the of the ball, the Cardinals defense is just as impressive. When the Cardinals hold an opponent to single digits, Mentor is 70-0 under head coach Steve Trivisonno. When holding opponents under 20 points, the team is (0.953) since OHSAA RULE CHANGES FOR 2016 SEASON The free blocking zone is no longer free for Ohio high school football players. The OHSAA announced a football rule change earlier this year, altering the way officials call clipping for the 2016 season. Officials can flag clipping in any situation, regardless of where it occurs on the field. Prior to this season, clipping was allowed in the free blocking zone that covered three yards beyond the line of scrimmage in both directions and four yards on either side of the snap. The penalty for clipping remains 15 yards. The elimination of clipping from high school football is the latest attempt to reduce the risk of injury made by the sport at that level. PUBLIC vs PRIVATE DEBATE PLAYOFF GAMES MOVING TO FRIDAY NIGHTS MENTOR CARDINALS REDLINE CLUB QUEEN OF HEARTS RAFFLE Since the start of the 2001 season, the Cardinals have played five (5) overtime games; but only one (1) during the regular season - - in Nov 17, OT vs St Ignatius W, (Byers Field Regional Final) Dec 2, OT vs Hilliard-Davidson L, (Fawcett Stadium- State Final) Oct 15, OT vs Shaker Heights L, (Cardinals Stadium Week 8) Nov 15, OT vs St Edward L, (Byers Field Regional Final) Nov 9, OT vs Solon W, (Lakewood Stadium Regional Semifinal) Over the last 20 years, the Mentor Cardinals have played 196 games against PUBLIC schools (all against Ohio schools except two games vs McDowell High School from Erie, Penn.) and 36 games against PRIVATE schools. The Ohio High School Athletic Association's Board of Directors voted in June to approve the change, which will begin with this year s football playoffs. The regional quarterfinal games will be played on Friday, Nov. 4. Divisions I, II, IV and VI will play on Fridays, while Divisions III, V and VII will play on Saturdays. Kent Berger Ohio University Brandon Fritts University of North Carolina TRUBISKY NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky and Wisconsin linebacker T.J. Watt were named Walter Camp Players of the Week for their performances on Saturday. Both of their teams came out with wins, which they played vital roles in. Chase Strayer Conner Krizancic Case Western Reserve University Ohio University CLASS OF 2015 CLASS OF 2013 Trubisky had the best game of his collegiate career, going 35-for-46 through the air for 453 passing yards and five touchdowns, including a game-winning two-yard pass to wide receiver Bug Howard as time expired, to give the Tar Heels a win over the Pittsburgh Panthers. The win moved North Carolina to 3-1 on the year and a gave the school a win in their first ACC game of Nico Lautanen Bowling Green State University Eddie Daugherty Eastern Michigan University Jake Floriea University of Toledo Marc Walton Ball State University Trevor Morrison Mercyhurst University CLASS OF 2014 Reese Armstrong John Carroll University Nick DeLisa Heidelberg University Joe Iafelice Otterbein University LaShawn Moore Heidelberg University Brandon Short Lehigh University Mitch Trubisky University of North Carolina A junior quarterback from Mentor, Ohio, Trubisky has gotten his opportunity to take over the starting role after having sat behind Marquise Williams last season as North Carolina made it to the ACC Championship Game. In four games this season, he has completed 74.5 percent of his passes and has thrown 10 touchdowns without tossing an interception. TRUBISKY LEADS TARHEELS TO COMEBACK WIN CHAPEL HILL For the second consecutive season, North Carolina came to life when it appeared most lifeless, and rallied for an improbable victory in its first ACC game. Last year it was at Georgia Tech. This time, on Saturday, it was against Pittsburgh. Now the Tar Heels will hope their victory against the Panthers will serve as the same kind of catalyst as that victory a year ago against the Yellow Jackets. UNC s win on Saturday, at least, was as improbable as the one against Georgia Tech. Todd Green John Carroll University CLASS OF 2012 Mason McKenrick John Carroll University Justin McMahon Case Western Reserve University Mike Muzic Lake Erie College Nick Kirschner Lake Erie College Kurt Laseak Ohio University Tom Strobel University of Michigan Casey Kraft Mercyhurst University In that game the Tar Heels overcame a 21-0 deficit. In this one, UNC trailed with less than seven minutes remaining. The Tar Heels scored the winning touchdown on Mitch Trubisky s 2-yard pass to Bug Howard with two seconds remaining. Key moment: There were several late. Start with UNC s penultimate drive. The Tar Heels converted a key fourth down on that one, too, before Trubisky-to-Howard Part I. Then, after UNC s quick defensive stop, the Tar Heels seemed to gain momentum, and confidence, with every subsequent fourth-down conversion. There were three of them on that final drive, which ended with Trubisky-to-Howard Part II. Key number: 4. The number of fourth downs UNC converted all of them in critical moments late in the game. If the Tar Heels fail to convert any of those, they likely don t win. Key player: Trubisky followed up an impressive dismantling of James Madison last week with a more impressive performance on Saturday. His 453 passing yards were a career high and second in school history. The Tar Heels were going to have opportunities in the passing game against Pitt s porous pass defense, and Trubisky and his teammates took advantage.

9 Mentor Cardinals Head Coach - Steve Trivisonno Steve Trivisonno had a goal when he graduated from Mentor in Mentor Cardinals All Time Coaching Records I knew when I left that someday I wanted to come back and help make this a great football program, Trivisonno said. Thirty-five years later, he is still striving to keep the scarlet and gray among the elite of all programs in the state of Ohio. Along with success, innovation and consistency, Trivisonno has been a shining example of longevity in a business that does not always show patience. The man in charge of Mentor s consistent and successful football program will lead his team on to the field for the season opener Aug. 26 against visiting Massillon Washington. It will be the 20 th time he has done so. In this his 20 th season as head coach at his alma mater, Trivisonno is as passionate about the game as when he played in the late 70s and early 80s at Mentor, and when he was a young up-and-coming assistant with the Cardinals in the 90s. We ve been lucky to have great kids, great coaches to work with, Trivisonno said. I can t believe it has been 20 years. It seems like yesterday. Trivisonno left Mentor after graduation and went on to play defensive back at Bowling Green. After graduating from BG in 1985, Trivisonno went to Madison for two years before returning to Mentor. He was an assistant under Dick Kirschbaum and eventually took over for Mike Pavlansky prior to the 1997 season. Trivisonno has 166 career victories, three Division I state runner-up finishes, he has coached two Mr. Football winners in the state of Ohio and he has seen several of his players go on to earn D-I college scholarships. A state title remains the goal and is always motivation, but Trivisonno says it does not define the program or his legacy. We want to be a consistent, successful football team and I think we have done that. And of course we want to bust our butts to win a state title. That s why you play. That s why you work hard in January to get to play in December, Trivisonno said. A state title is always the goal, but it isn t the end-all if we ever win it or not. We work hard not only for ourselves but for all the guys who came before us. Trivisonno has earned several individual honors during his tenure at Mentor and recently reached the 150-win milestone. As for what starting his 20 th season as head coach of the Cardinals means to him, Trivisonno didn t take long to answer. It means I m old, he said with a smile. 1 S TRIVISONNO 1997-present D Kerschbaum E Masonbrick T Frazier D Crum F Domokos L Tressel C Tischendorf A Riesen M Pavlansky E Biederman D Henderson L Michael J Hecker R Clements C Mefort D Canton WINS LOSSES TIES PERCENTAGE TOTAL GAMES (since 1924) Coach Steve Trivisonno's Overall Coaching Record YEAR Regular Season Post Season Overall Record W L T Perc% W L T Perc% W L T Perc% Results WINS no playoffs Regular Season Lost - Regional Semi Final (Strongsville) OHSAA Playoffs Lost - Regional Qtr Final (Shaker Hts) no playoffs LOSSES no playoffs Regular Season Lost - Regional Final (Warren Harding) OHSAA Playoffs Lost - Regional Final (St Edward) no playoffs no playoffs Regular Season Lost - State Final (Hillard Davidson) OHSAA Playoffs Lost - State Final (Cincinnati St Xavier) Lost - Regional Semi Final (Strongsville) no playoffs Lost - Regional Quarters (St Edward) Lost - Regional Finals (St Ignatius) Lost - State Semi Final (Toledo Whitmer) Lost - State Final (Cincinnati Moeller) Lost - Regional Semi Final (Hudson) Lost - Regional Quarters (St Edward) CURRENT SEASON 168 PERCENTAGE 0.724

The trip to Parma on Sept. 3 was not one of them. St. Ignatius dominated every phase of the game and avenged a 2015 loss at the JTO by handing the Cardinals a 49-7 defeat. First impressions are usually lasting ones. Isaiah Gullick and the Mentor Cardinals certainly left a lasting imprint on the 2016 season with a resounding performance in the opener against visiting Massillon on Aug. 26. Making his first varsity start, Gullick - a 5-foot-9, 180-pound senior - ran for 238 yards and five touchdowns, leading Mentor to a win over the Tigers in front of more than 7,000 fans at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium. I prayed all the time I d be able to show my talents, Gullick said. I had my chance tonight, and I m thankful for it. I m very blessed. Gullick who overcame injury as a sophomore and bided his time behind All-Ohioan Alex Mathews as a junior - scored on touchdown runs of 2, 78, 4 and 20 yards. He also caught an 18-yard touchdown pass on a screen from quarterback Tadas Tatarunas. Before leaving the field after the game, Gullick pulled the Mentor offensive linemen together and thanked them one by one. I m nothing without my teammates and especially those guys, Gullick said of his line. They believe in what I can do, and I believe in what they can do. Cardinals coach Steve Trivisonno, starting his 20th season at the helm of his alma mater, wasn t all that surprised with Gullick s effort. You guys didn t believe me. I told you he was pretty good, Trivisonno said. He bided his time. He didn t complain. He worked hard, got his chance and did a great job. I m proud of him. When Massillon made its big push in the second half, it was Gullick who answered for the scarlet and gray. After Nate Gregg s 21-yard field goal to start the fourth quarter made it 36-24, Gullick ripped off a 50-yard run to put his team deep into Massillon territory. We got out-toughed tonight. We better figure out how to play with a sense of urgency and play like a good football team, Mentor coach Steve Trivisonno said. The Wildcats dominated time of possession and chewed up yardage on the ground in the first half, jumping out to a 14-0 lead. Mentor (1-1) was in the game and had momentum late in the second quarter after a 47-yard touchdown pass from Tadas Tatarunas to Derek Kleinhenz pulled the Cardinals to within a touchdown at On the ensuing possession, Mark Gordon had a sack and caused a fumble that was recovered by Mentor. However, an interception in the end zone by the Wildcats kept the Cardinals from tying the game before halftime. That was a big play (interception) and then we get the ball in the second half and don t do anything with it, Trivisonno said. We had so many three-and-outs, and it is hard to ask the defense to stay on the field that long. We just need to get better as a whole football team. Everyone needs to get better and play harder if we are going to be a good team. St. Ignatius (2-0) pulled away in the second half behind the running of James Andrews and Mark Bobinski. The Wildcats scored three touchdowns in the third quarter to push out to a 35-7 advantage. The Wildcats had 445 yards of offense and 27 first downs to just 146 yards and eight first downs for Mentor. St. Ignatius did not punt in the game. The one positive Trivisonno said he took from the night was Kleinhenz, who not only had a TD catch, but punted six times for a near 38-yards per kick average. A few plays later, he scored on the screen pass from Tatarunas. Massillon came right back with a touchdown pass from Seth Blankenship to Austin Jasinski to make it 43-31, but Gullick tacked on two more touchdown runs to finish off the Tigers. The game started off with three touchdowns being scored in the first 2 minutes, 5 seconds of the game, including a span of three touchdowns in a span of four offensive plays. When Will Laganke scooped up a fumble and raced 66 yards for a touchdown, Mentor had a 20-7 lead in the first quarter. It was a 29-7 halftime lead when Ryan Hagan hauled in a 90-yard halfback pass from Logan Shea. That play was huge, Trivisonno said. I thought it was the right time to run it and the guys executed. Massillon methodically got back into the game, thanks in large part to senior receiver Austin Jasinski. Not only did the 6- foot-1, 163-pounder have 14 catches for 220 yards and three touchdowns, but he also intercepted a pair passes. Mentor outgained Massillon, Tatarunas completed 5 of 16 passes for 137 yards, but two went for touchdowns. The opening-game loss was Massillon s first since 2010

Frustrated and disappointed with the outcome of the 20-7 loss to visiting St. Xavier on Sept, 9, perhaps, but the veteran coach was able to quickly see the bigger picture after Mentor lost a difficult game to an elite opponent. If we don t turn the ball over we might have been ina position for a blowout win, Trivisonno said. Our guys played their tails off. They played hard, they battled and they will be prepared for later in the year (playoffs). Not a lot of teams play the schedule we play. These games aren t for now, they are for later or what is the point? The Mentor defense - which had fourth-down stands on four occasions - dominated the first quarter as the Bombers mustered 19 yards on 12 plays. The Cardinals forced four three-and-outs to begin the game, as St. Xavier didn t convert a first down until nearly 16 minutes elapsed. Meanwhile, the Cardinals went up 7-0 as junior QB Tadas Tatarunas 16-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Hagan capped a 10-play, 61-yard drive with 8:56 left in the second quarter. St. Xavier countered to sustain a drive for the first time and scored on a Chase Wolf to Nicholas Moeller 9-yard TD hookup tying the game at 7. Turnovers derailed scoring chances in the first half for Mentor as a botched snap at the St. Xavier 6- yard line ended a Mentor drive in the first quarter and a fumble at the Bombers 25-yard line occurred as the Cardinals were about to break into the red zone on their ensuing drive after the touchdown. After Wolf ran for a touchdown to put the Bombers up 14-7 seven minutes into the third quarter, Tatarunas was intercepted twice. The second pick came on the last play of the game, which Colton Paul returned 87 yards for a score after time expired for the final margin of victory, but a meaningless score in relevance to the game. Mentor was hindered by penalties, two of which cut down drives in the fourth quarter including a holding call that negated a big reception that would have put the Cardinals in position to tie or win the game with less than 1 minute to play. Tatarunas finished with 187 yards on 17 of 35 passing, while Isaiah Gullick ran for 125 yards on 26 carries to rebound after St. Ignatius held him below 30 yards in a Week 2 loss. Trivisonno was pleased with his defense all game, which yielded 260 yards on 57 plays. Wolf, playing in his second varsity game, threw for 170 yards and led the Bombers with 79 rushing yards. "Our defense was tremendous tonight," Trivisonno said. "We are a pretty good football team. These are really good teams we are playing and we are going to get better." 3rd 6:40 Euclid De'quan Pruitt 2 yard run (Jordan Hughes) 3rd 3:18 Mentor Steve Baird 20 yard pass from Tadas Tatarunas (Tyler Knapp kick) 3rd 1:12 Euclid Kinyudus Hollins 18 yard pass from Noah Mitchell (Jordan Hughes kick) 4th 10:50 Mentor Isaiah Gullick 1 yard run (Tyler Knapp kick) 4th 1:44 Euclid Reggie Wilkerson 3 yard run (Jordan Hughes kick) Euclid s Noah Mitchell threw for 359 yards and four touchdowns and De quan Pruitt ran for 111 yards and a score, part of a 540-yard offensive output, leading the Panthers to a win over visiting Mentor on Sept. 15. It s Euclid s first win over Mentor since The only lead Mentor (1-3, 0-1 Greater Cleveland Conference) held was at 7-0 to start the game. The Panthers (3-1, 1-0) scored three straight touchdowns to take the lead for good at Mentor was injury-riddled on defense, but kept it close - however with the game still hanging in the balance with less than two minutes remaining and Euclid clinging to a lead, Reggie Wilkerson scored on a 3-yard touchdown run that put the game out of reach. Mitchell threw for a career-high 359 yards, with touchdown passes to Ramone Collins (45 and 18 yards), Arquon Bush (five yards) and Kinyudus Hollins (18 yards). Mentor coach Steve Trivisonno credited the 6-foot-4 Euclid quarterback, but pointed to his team s inability to stop the run as a bigger problem. While Mentor lost the lead for good early in the second quarter, the Cardinals offense kept within striking distance. When Isaiah Gullick (23 carries, 127 yards) scored from the 1 with 10:50 left in the fourth quarter, Mentor was within a field goal at But twice Euclid came up with defensive stops in the fourth quarter, holding Mentor on downs. Instead of sitting on the ball with 3:28 left, Euclid went for one last game-clinching score. Aside from Gullick s big game running the ball, Mentor quarterback Tadas Tatarunas threw for 263 yards and four touchdowns, including three to Steve Baird. The 37 points were more than Mentor scored in the last two games combined (14) in losses to St. Ignatius and St. Xavier. We did some really good things on offense, Trivisonno said. We just ran out of bodies on defense. Mentor played without defensive linemen Caleb Rykaczewski and Kyle Ulshafer, and also had a few defensive backs get injured in the game, Trivisonno said. Mentor is 1-3 for the first time since 2005.
