12 KING S BASKETBALL PREVIEW : "King s Looks To Defend Crown..." The King's College men's basketball team will have a tough act to follow after last season's squad enjoyed the most successful year in program history. A year ago, the Monarchs posted a school-record 24-6 mark, won the MAC Freedom Conference championship, and came within one victory of reaching the NCAA Division III "Final Four". The Monarchs will face the challenging task of replacing three veteran starters, including point-guard Landon Gabriel, center Marty O'Hora, and all- American forward Brian Horgan. While the Monarchs do have holes to fill, there are a number of experienced players back who fifth-year head coach J.P. Andrejko feels will enable King's to remain a highly-competitive team in the conference. Heading the list of veterans are two returning starters - sophomore power forward Vince Scalzo and sophomore guard Jamie Cousart. The 6-4 Scalzo averaged 10.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per-game as a rookie, shooting 55.2 ( ) percent from the field and 78.7 (74-94) percent from the foul line. The 6-3 Cousart, meanwhile, averaged 6.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per-game. He has the ability to play both point-guard and shooting guard. Returning players expected to step in and fill major roles include 6-3 senior forward and team captain Thomas Moore, one of the most athletic and versatile players on the team. Last year Moore came off the bench to average 5.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.8 assists. Another top returnee is 6-6, 220-pound sophomore center John Soboleski who averaged 7.5 points and 4.2 rebounds. Also returning is 6-3 sophomore guard-forward Jim Welsh, a solid longrange shooter who can also handle the ball. Welsh averaged 6.0 points per-game as a key reserve and connected on 46 three-pointers, shooting 43.0 percent from beyond the arc. The Monarchs also return another outstanding three-point shooter in 5-11 sophomore Jared Black who is expected to see increased time this season. Vince Sobocinski, a 6-3 guard-forward, saw limited action last year but averaged a team-best 19.0 points during King's three-game summer trip to Ireland. Junior Brendan O'Malley, a 6-1 guard, looks to make a bigger impact while sophomore Nate Alcott, another 6-1 guard, moves up to the varsity after playing on the jayvee team last year. Experienced inside depth looms as the team's biggest question mark. Dan Bowden, a 6-8 sophomore, and 6-5 junior Dave King saw limited time a year ago. Adam Fedorko, a 6-7 senior, returns after missing last year due to a battle with Crohn's Disease and must regain his timing, strength, and conditioning. Newcomers looking to make an impact include 5-10 sophomore point-guard Kofi Dwebeng, a transfer from Widener University where he played in 23 games as a rookie. Dwebeng is expected to contribute immediately as he brings quickness and savvy to the position. Three freshmen guards adding depth in the backcourt include 5-11 Sean Kelly, 6-0 Shawn Swim, and 6-1 Eric Krwawecz. In the paint, new players include 6-5 Ian Gilmartin and 6-8 Phillip Stroup. 10.

13 Sophomore 6-3 guard Jamie Cousart is a tough matchup with his size, excellent all-around skills, and intelligence as evidenced by his 6.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per-game averages in 30 starts as a rookie. 11.

27 THE MIDDLE ATLANTIC CONFERENCES The Middle Atlantic Conferences, regarded as one of the strongest NCAA Division III basketball conferences in the nation, underwent considerable change in the recent years. In 1999, the presidents of the MAC colleges announced the league's reorganization into two eight-team conferences for most sports - the Freedom Conference and the Commonwealth Conference. Both conferences operate under the umbrella of the Middle Atlantic Conferences. In basketball, both the winners of the Freedom and Commonwealth conferences gain an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III National Tournament. MAC operates under the leadership of an executive committee consisting of college presidents from each conference. The current MAC structuring is as follows: FREEDOM CONFERENCE Delaware Valley College DeSales University Drew University FDU-Madison King's College Lycoming College University of Scranton Wilkes University COMMONWEALTH CONFERENCE Albright College Elizabethtown College Juniata College Lebanon Valley College Messiah College Moravian College Susquehanna University Widener University MAC FREEDOM MEN'S STANDINGS (Final) Freedom Conference League Overall Team W L Pct.
