3 Series History Versus American American is Loyola s most-played Patriot League opponent, as Thursday s game will be the 93rd all-time installment in the series. The programs have even split the games, each winning 46 times. The Eagles, who are Loyola s seventh most-played opponent in program history, and Greyhounds were former Mason-Dixon Conference opponents prior to each joining NCAA Division I. The teams have split the two meetings they have had in each of the Greyhounds four prior seasons in the Patriot League, and Loyola picked up a win over the Eagles on Dec. 30, 20 in Washington, D.C., to open Patriot League action, but American won the regular-season finale, 64-62, in Baltimore. Charlie Jones hit a 3-pointer from the top of the perimeter for American with 2.6 seconds left in regulation to push the Eagles to the win in that game. American took its first lead of the season half on a Matt Cimino three with 5: left in regulation, putting the Eagles ahead, From that point until the end of the game, the lead changed hands 10 times. Mark Gasperini put American ahead with two free throws at 2:23, but Jarred Jones came back with a reverse layup 50 seconds later, and the Greyhounds were within two. Loyola set up a press and forced an Eagles turnover under the Greyhounds basket. Jones drove and kicked to Chuck Champion on the right wing, and the freshman drained a three with 1:10 on the clock, pushing Loyola up, Sa eed Nelson, however, was fouled on American s offensive end, and he converted both free throws to swing the lead back to the Eagles. Nineteen seconds later, Champion drove the baseline from the left side, drew contact and laid the ball off the glass to Leading The Greyhounds & Offensive Superlatives (Includes ties) # Times Leading Team ( /Career) Double- Player G-GS Pts. 4 Last Time Out Holy Cross used a 20-2 second-half run that covered more than six minutes Monday night to turn a nine-point deficit in to an advantage of the same amount. The Crusaders then held off Loyola for a Patriot League victory at the Hart Center. The Greyhounds took a lead on a pull-up jumper by Andrew Kostecka with 12:50 left in regulation, but Jacob Grandison scored 19 seconds later, starting a stretch of 10-straight Crusaders points. Matt Faw and Austin Butler made threes during the stretch of 10 in a row with Butler s giving Holy Cross a advantage. Isaiah Hart momentarily stopped the rally with two points on a Loyola layup at 9:41, but the Crusaders reeled off another 10 in a row, capped by a Grandison basket at 6:27 to make it Andre Walker knocked down a three off a Hart assist, and Hart then hit two free throws at 5:39, drawing Loyola within four, but Matt Zignorski drove and scored at 5:12 to stretch the lead back to six. Two Sam Norton free throws at 4:43 brought Loyola within four, and Kostecka grabbed an offensive rebound and kicked to Walker for a top-of-the-perimeter three at 4:02, getting the Greyhounds within a point, Loyola s defense held the Crusaders without a shot for 29 seconds on the shot clock, but off an out-of-bounds pass from Karl Charles, Grandison hit a jumper at the buzzer to make it Crusaders. Chuck Champion again got the Greyhounds within a point on a basket at 2:55, but Caleb Green and Charles scored in the paint on Holy Cross next two possessions, and Loyola would not get closer than three for the final 90 seconds. Opening Patriot League Play Big Andre Walker has scored 18 or more points in all three of the Greyhounds four Patriot League games so far this year, and he has two outings with 22 or more to average 19.0 in four conference games. In 58 career Patriot League games, Walker has scored 831 points, an average of 14.3 per game. Walker scored 12 of his 18 points after halftime, including seven-straight Loyola points over a late two-minute stretch, to lead all scorers against Navy. It marked the first time since November 14 at Fairfield and his return from an injury that saw him miss two-plus games that he led the team in scorers. In the final 4:08, Loyola held Navy to just one field goal, outscoring the Midshipmen The Greyhounds also did not allow Navy to grab a rebound during that run. Walker again led Loyola in scoring on Tuesday against Army West Point, tallying 22 points with coming in the first half. He then made a career-high 10 field goals against Boston University to match his season high (Nov. 14 vs. Fairfield) with 27. Top-10 Territory Cam Gregory grabbed 11 rebounds on January 8 at Holy Cross, bringing his career total to 757. That performance moved him past three former Greyhounds Brian Carroll ( , 754), Jimmy Smith ( , 749) and Ed Butler ( , 747) and into fourth place on the school s all-time rebounds chart. Mark Rohde ( ) is third all-time with 836, and Farrell Fenzel ( ) is second with 879. His 757 career rebounds rank eighth in Patriot League history. Gregory is also the school s career leader in field-goal percentage (58.3). Bench Sparks Andrew Kostecka and KaVaughn Scott came off the Loyola bench against Boston University to combine for 22 points, seven blocked shots, two steals and 15 rebounds. Kostecka tallied 14 points, his high since returning December 21 from an ankle injury that sidelined him for four games. Scott logged a career-high in blocks for the second-straight game, swatting four Terriers shots after posting three blocks Monday at Army West Point. Kostecka turned away three shots, one off his high of four from December 21 against Drexel. Kostecka is third in the Patriot League in both blocked shots (1.1) and steals per game (1.6). Scott is averaging 6.3 rebounds over Loyola s last three contests. Norton Big Off Bench Sam Norton scored a career-high nine points, and he matched his previous best with five rebounds, in the win over Navy. Norton, a junior walk-on, saw 19 minutes of action, his most since a wrist injury on November 28 forced him to miss four games. He made all three of his field goals and all three free throws he attempted against the Navy, scoring all of his points in the game s final 17 minutes. He then played a career-high 28 minutes at Army West Point and grabbed a career-best six rebounds, and he matched both of those numbers in the win over Boston University. In three Patriot League games, he is averaging 4.3 points and 5.8 rebounds. Champion Debuts Chuck Champion missed the first five games of the season before debuting at Dartmouth. Isaiah Hart is the most-recent member of the 20-plus club, scoring 26 on Saturday at Mount St. Mary s. Champion then scored 21 against Drexel, and Walker had 22 at Army West Point. Slick Shooting Loyola made 24 of 47 shots from the field against Navy in the Patriot League opener, checking in with a 60 percent mark. The field-goal percentage was the Greyhounds best since making 60.4 percent of their shots in a January 2013 win over Marist College. The Greyhounds 47 shots were their fewest in a game this year, and they limited Navy to 21 rebounds in the contest. The Midshipmen came into the game averaging 35.5 boards per game while holding opponents to 43.9 percent from the floor. Hart Heats Up Isaiah Hart made 7 of 12 second-half shots December 2 at Mount St. Mary s and tallied of his team-high 26 points after the break. Hart s 26 points were the most by a Loyola freshman since Jamal Hunter scored 27 points in a March 1, 1998, game at Iona College. Over the last nine games, Hart has averaged 14.0 points over, and since joining the starting lineup on November 21 against Goucher, he has averaged 11.8 points. Clutch Late Andre Walker s game-winning layup with 27.3 seconds left against Lehigh on Feb. 1, 2017, was his third game-winning basket of the season and second against the Mountain Hawks. He hit a three with three with eight-tenths of a second left on Jan. 5 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to push Loyola in front for an win the first time the teams met last season. Earlier in the year, Walker hit a winning layup with five-tenths of a second remaining at Stony Brook, giving the Greyhounds a road win. He then came up defensively at American, keeping the Eagles Sa eed Nelson from driving and blocking his 3-pointer at the buzzer. Walker now has scored game-winning points six times during his career. In 2015-, he scored on a drive to the basket with less than five seconds left at home against Lehigh, and he hit two free throws with just over three ticks on the clock for a win at the U.S. Military Academy.
