NEWTON CAMPUS SOCCER FIELD Nestled behind Boston College's Newton Campus, the Eagles' new soccer facility has drawn great reviews in just its first two years of existence. It provides players and fans alike the opportunity to play and watch top-notch collegiate soccer games in a classic New England setting: among the trees. The pitch won the Soccer Manager's Association College Soccer Field of the Year in 1999 and visiting coaches constantly rave about the field's condition. The new field was dedicated on September 12, 1999 with a 3- win for the men's team over Army. Since its opening, the women's team has registered a 15-3 home record on the field, including a 7-1 record in 2. During the fall, games are played while the surrounding trees turn different shades of red, gold and orange. Amid the stone walls and shaded endlines, the Eagles face some of the best competition in New England and the nation with the full support of their fans. With its close proximity to the dormitories, the "Superfans", BC's collective student fan base, frequent games to provide a boisterous and exciting atmosphere. Decked in bright gold t-shirts, Superfans, friends and family alike sit right near the action and the close tree line provides an intimate atmosphere for soccer matches. Conditions at the new field provide for a unique soccer playing experience. Games have been played in only daylight in its first two years, though lights will soon be installed for night games. There are no substitution horns or pregame warm-up soundtracks, nor are there any speakers in regular season games: just soccer the way soccer is meant to be played. A practice field is adjacent to the main competition field where both the men and women's teams train daily. The secondary field is also used for team warm-ups when the men and women play doubleheaders during the fall. DIRECTIONS TO THE FIELD From the Mass. 4 CLIMBING back TO the HEIGHTS In 21 Eleven seconds. The Boston College women's soccer team was essentially eleven seconds away from its second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance when the 2 season took a sharp U-turn. Leading 2-1 at home to West Virginia in the second to last game of the regular season, the Mountaineers tied the score with 11 seconds remaining in regulation and went on to win the game in overtime. Although the Eagles later advanced to the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament before falling to No. 1 Notre Dame, BC's fate was left up to the NCAA selection committee. On selection Sunday, three BIG EAST teams were invited to play in the NCAA Tournament: Notre Dame, Connecticut and West Virginia. The Eagles' ticket was taken from them by the Mountaineers with 11 seconds to go in that last regular-season game. Head Coach Alison Foley is expecting big things from her 21 squad. Included in those expectations is another trip to the NCAA Tournament. "We have an incredible amount of depth on our roster this year," Foley says. "We should be an exciting team. There won't be any weaknesses on the field. In any given game, anyone could step up and he the star of the game. We won't have one or two go-to players; we'll have rachel parri an entire team of them." With the loss of such four-year defensive stars as All-American back Sarah Powell, back Katherine Murphy and goalkeeper Courtney Schaeffer, some might expect Foley to be a little concerned with her team's ability to keep the other team off the scoreboard. But Foley sees the issue differently. "We will be young and inexperienced in the backfield," Foley says. "But we have young players who excelled in the spring season and a freshman class that is full of potential stars. They will all be fighting for starting roles and playing time, which will push them harder to play better." Joining the team in 21 is one of the nation's top ten recruiting classes for the second-straight season. Players like Erin Docherty, Laina Ceddia, Lindsey Fairweather and Danielle Servediowill join the squad and be expected to step right in to see a lot of playing time. Coupled with the senior leadership from the team's oldest players, Foley expects the team to be pushed from the very start of the season. "Our three captains - Rachel Parri, Meghan Mooreand Lindsey Marshall - are all serious athletes," Foley says. "Be it on the field, in off-season workouts or in the weight room, these three women work at the highest level. They have set an example for the rest of the team to follow and their work ethic and leadership has become contagious." IN GOAL The graduation of four-year starter Courtney Scheaffer has opened the door for a healthy competition in goal. Schaeffer was a mainstay, starting all but two games in her career. But last season as a freshman, Meredith Crottysaw three halves of action and earned a win in her first career start against Central Connecticut. Anna Shapell joins the Eagles out of Cape Elizabeth, Maine and will also have the opportunity to compete for time in goal. "Meredith had a great spring season, Foley says. "She got a lot of playing experience and she made 15 saves in the scrimmage against the Boston Breakers, the Women s United Soccer Association franchise. She has demonstrated the confidence we need in net and the team is comfortable with her. We know she is comfortable with the starting role going into this season. "Anna is a hard worker and has a great training mentality. Her work rate is infectious and she should push Meredith in a healthy competition for playing time." AT BACK For the last four seasons, All-America Sarah Powell has been roaming the backfield as one of the nation's premiere stoppers. Joining her as a four-year starter was Katherine Murphy who provided steady, smart play during her entire career. With their graduation, Foley has a talented group remaining and a crop of fresh faces to stop the opposing attack. Foley has two stalwarts return in 21 as kate macdonald senior left back Rachel Parri and junior right backkate MacDonald will anchor the outside. Last season, Parri started all 21 games at back and became a creator on offense. She routinely carried the ball out of the backfield to spur a rush. MacDonald has a strong defensive mindset who usually finds herself matched up against the opposing team's top player. "Rachel is a dangerous threat on the attack out of the backfield. She's a strong defender who will help lead the younger players," Foley says. "Kate is the most athletic player on the team. She is one of the best man-markers in the BIG EAST. She is great in the air and can 4

also help set up the offense." Other returning players who will vie for time on the outside are senior Meghan Buckley and sophomore YeJin Kim. Both players saw limited time in 2, but played well in the spring with the increased time. At center back, freshman Erin Docherty has the potential to be the next Eagle superstar in the backfield. A strong player out of sarah rahko Allentown, Pa., Foley is counting on her to fill the shoes left by Powell. In the fall of 2, she attended the Youth Soccer Association national camp. "Erin has the potential to be the next great player to come out of BC. She has wonderful field sense and can adapt quickly to the play," Foley says. At stopper, another freshman - Lindsey Fairweather - will have the opportunity to step in right away and make an impact. A newcomer from Kingston, Mass., Fairweather set the Silver Lake Regional scoring mark, but will move from offense to defense at the Heights. "Lindsey can get really high and will win a lot of balls for us. She'll be dangerous offensively and she is very athletic." Two veterans, Gen Richardson and Katherine Bodde, will compete with Fairweather for the stopper position headed into the season. Richardson, a two-sport athlete at BC who spends the winter on the ice with the women's hockey team, joined the soccer team for the first time in 2. She saw action in 1 games and provided a physical presence in the backfield. Bodde came on strong in the spring and will add depth as the season approaches. MIDFIELD Foley has two of the strongest midfielders in the league returning in 21. Sarah Rahko, the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year in 2, and junior Colleen Danaher step back into the familiar roles of transitioning and setting up the game. Rahko was one of the best freshmen in the nation in 2. She was the Eagles' second-leading scorer with 29 points on eight goals and 13 assists. Foley inserted her into the starting lineup from game one and she remained there all season. She garnered many accolades last season, including a place on the Northeast regional All- America squad. "Sarah could play in the pros right now. She has wonderful vision at center midfield and the best technical ability," Foley says. "She finds the forwards so easily and has developed the ability to beat people off the dribble." Danaher also returns at the other center midfield position. Last season, she started all 21 games and registered 18 points off seven goals and four assists. Foley points to her style of play as one of the team's strengths. "Colleen is the steadiest player on the team, Foley says. She plays a simple game and keeps the team together. She's a key part of the offensive transition." Another player who will see time in center midfield is newcomer Danielle Servedio. A freshman from South Huntington, N.Y., she is a former member of the United State's junior national pool. She hopes to bring that experience to the field at the Heights. "Danielle is another Sarah Rahko-type player. She is very sound in her ability and can create for the rest of the team." On the outside, senior Lindsey Marshall returns on the left. She started all 21 games last season, scoring one goal and adding six assists. One of the fastest players on the team, she has an excellent serve and adds energy to the attack. "Lindsey is one of our captains this year. She leads the team by example and will really help the younger kids this season. She gets out there and makes good things happen with her speed and accuaracy." Freshman Kristin Goddard could see time behind Marshall on the left. As a high school senior from Northboro, Mass. and Marian High, Goddard was the voted the most valuable player in Eastern Massachusetts last year. On the right side, a competition has heated up between sophomore Lauren Vanni and freshman Laina Ceddia. Vanni completed the spring session very strong and opened the eyes of the coaches quickly. Ceddia, a newcomer from Belmont, Mass., was a two-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America All- American and was the 2 NSCAA/adidas Massachusetts Player of the Year. "Lauren had a great spring and played very strong," Foley says. "She gained a lot of experience against some tough opponents. She came to understand the position and really impressed us. "Laina is so fast. She will not only be the fastest player on the team, but one of the fastest in the BIG EAST. She can get behind defenses quickly and surprise teams with her abilities." FORWARD At forward, Foley returns her entire attack from a year ago. Leading the squad is the team's leading scorer in 2, Meghan Moore. Starting every game at BC since her freshman year, Moore tallied 11 goals and eight assists last season for 3 points on the attack. She earned first team All-BIG EAST honors was a regional All-America selection. "Meghan is an athlete-and-a-half," Foley says. "She has the most powerful shot on the team and proved to us last year that she can score. She works hard and the rest of the team follows her lead." Also returning is Kate Halloran who was the team's third-leading scorer last season. She colleen danaher 5

meghan moore knocked in 1 goals and added two assists, while seeing action in each of the team's 21 games. Foley is impressed with her progression since arriving in Chestnut Hill and has the seen the results on the field. "Kate has drastically improved since her freshman year," Foley says. "She is the most dimensional forward on the team and can beat you in combination with another player, but is also just as dangerous one-on-one." Two other key players come back in 21, both of whom saw limited time last season due to injury and health. Senior Morgan Page, one of the team's leading scorers in each of her first two years, is a dangerous player on the field who has scored 36 goals in her career so far. Hampered by injuries last season, the staff is expecting her to return to the form of her freshman and sophomore seasons. Sophomore Maureen Jenkinsalso comes back this season. Last year, the staff had to use Jenkins sparingly due to medical condition. Over the winter, she worked with doctors to correct the problem and should be ready for a full campaign in 21. "Mo can create havoc for other teams when she's on the field," Foley says. "It seems like she is everywhere all at once and it's very difficult for the other team to mark her. If she can stay healthy, she should have a great year." Goddard could also see some time in the front is Foley needs more depth. SCHEDULE The Eagles' schedule this season will go a long way in leading the team back to the NCAA tournament and a fight for the BIG EAST title. BC will play the its first three games away from home, but comes back to Newton for a three-game stand against Hartford (Sept. 12), New Hampshire (Sept. 15) and Dartmouth (Sept. 19). Among the first three games are two in the Connecticut Tournament against Georgia and Ohio State (Sept. 7 and 9). The BIG EAST portion of the schedule kicks off on Friday, Sept. 21 at Providence, the first of three-straight league games on the road. Once the Eagles get through September, Foley and the team will be at home for six games in a row with competition against teams like Connecticut (Oct. 7) and Harvard(Oct. 1). The last four games of the schedule alternate back and forth between home and away. "This season, we will be helped by our schedule," Foley says. "We will play most of our toughest opponents at home. The kids respond well to the fans and atmosphere have really taken care of business on the Newton Field in the last two years. On the pitch at the Newton Campus Soccer Field, the women have posted an amazing 15-3 record since the construction of the field in kate halloran "We start the season with two teams who we aren't that familiar with, but both Georgia and Ohio State are strong. Those two games will test us and let the team know where it stands. "Once we finish the tournament, we'll play Hartford, Dartmouth, Boston University, Harvard and UConn - all Top 25 teams - at home." "We think that with the players and experience we have coming back, we should be able to earn a spot in the Top 25 this season. The schedule will go a long way in helping us achieve that goal. "Last year, we played well but only took care of the teams we needed to beat. We didn't really have a big win like we did in We understand that to be considered one of the best, you need to play well against everybody and score some big wins as the season goes on." Senior leadership, coupled with the insurgence of a highly-rated freshman class, should help this team to reach its goal of returning to the NCAA Tournament. "We have a lot of experience on this team and the women remember what it was like to not hear Boston College called at last year's NCAA Selection Show. They are hungry to get back to the tournament and will be out to prove they should be there this year." 6

alison foley head coach Alison Foley enters her fifth season as the head coach of the Boston College women's soccer program. Under the direction of Foley, the Eagles have become one of the elite programs in the country as BC has posted a mark in her tenure. 21 the 2 season in review Fresh off its best season in school history and a trip to the NCAA Tournament's "Sweet 16", the 2 Boston College women's soccer team looked to improve on its 199 record of The goal of reaching the national tournament for the second-straight season was ultimately left uncompleted, but the team came together and keyed one of the most explosive offenses in the region and advanced to the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals. BC opened the 2 campaign in the same manner it did the 1999 season: against Hartford and Fairfield. After an opening day loss to Hartford (2-1), BC rebounded with a 2- victory over the Stags. The shutout was the first of 1 on the season for keeper Courtney Schaeffer With two games under their belts, the Eagles made their 2 home debut with a 9- blanking of Holy Cross. Meghan Moore made a giant impact in the game with seven point ( two goals and three assists). BC made it three wins in a row with a 4-2 win over Boston University in the first round of the MSI/ECAC Cape Cod Classic. Four different goal scorers contributed in the victory. With a 4-3 overtime loss to Colgate in the second round of the ECAC tournament, BC fell to 3-2 on the season. But that all changed as the Eagles ran off six straight wins and allowed just one goal in the span, Including five shut outs in a row. BC earned a 5-1 win over Central Connecticut as Kate Halloran and Morgan Page each netted two goals. Meredith Crotty saw her first career action in the net for the Eagles. After CCSU scored in the 24th minute, BC began an impressive defensive effort did not allow a goal for the next 59 minutes of play over seven games. With a 2- win at Central Florida off a pair of Halloran tallies, the Eagles earned the first of four 2- victories in a row. BC earned a 2- win at Miami then returned home for a 2- win over New Hampshire. Colleen Danaher scored the game-winning goal then added an assist on Halloran's score. The second and third games in the three-game homestand followed the same pattern as the first one. A 2- win over Syracuse, spurred by Moore and Maureen Jenkins goals, was followed by a 4- win over St. John's. Halloran had another multiple-goal game and Lauren Vanni added two assists in the win over the Red Storm. With victories over Miami, Syracuse and St. John's, BC was 3- in the Northeast Division of the BIG EAST, and set to face the other undefeated team in the division in the next game: Connecticut. BC played strong and Schaeffer's nine saves kept the Eagles in the game, but the team couldn't get a shot past the UConn keeper as the team fell, 1-, in Storrs. The next game was a rematch of the Eagles' 1999 NCAA Tournament second round game against Harvard. Halloran gave the Eagles an early 1- lead, but the Crimson tied the score and took the game in double-overtime, 2-1. BC snapped its brief skid with back-to-back victories over Pittsburgh and Providence, both by shut out. Sarah Rahko and Katherine Murphy each scored as BC defeated the Panthers. Against Providence, Rahko scored a goal and added two assists to lead the Eagles to the win and a final 4-1 record in league play. Top-ranked Notre Dame was next on the schedule in South Bend. Moore got BC on the board first, but the Eagles couldn't keep control of the game and fell 2-1 on a second-half Irish goal. Shaeffer made a season-high 11 saves in the win. The Eagles rebounded at home with a 5-2 win over Northeastern. Moore scored twice and Rahko had a goal and an assist, while Danaher had two assists in the win. In the last regular-season game at home, BC fell to West Virginia 2-1. With 11 seconds remaining in the game, the Mountaineers evened the score and then won the game in overtime. With a 2-1 victory on the road over Brown, the Eagles closed out the regular season. Rahko tallied both goals. In the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament, BC defeated Seton Hall, 2-. Rahko scored the game-winning goal from Moore, who later added a goal of her own. BC faced Notre Dame for the second time in three weeks in the semifinals of the tournament. The Irish took a 2- halftime lead before closing the game with a 3- shutout of the Eagles. The evening prior to the semifinals, the Eagles picked up their BIG EAST Awards. Back Sarah Powell was honored as the league's Defensive Player of the Year and also earned a place on the All-BIG EAST first team for the second year in a row. Rahko copped Rookie of the Year honors, as well as a place on the all-conference second team. Joining Powell on the first team was Moore, who finished the season as the school's leading scorer. Regional All-America honors came next as all three players found their names on the Northeast regional teams. Powell and Rahko were selected to the first team, as Moore was chosen for the third team. Finally, with only national All-America honors remaining, Powell become the first BC player since Betsy Ready in 1986 to be honored nationally. She became the first-ever female soccer player professionally drafted from Boston College. Not recruited by the Eagles, Powell arrived at the Heights in August of 1997 and successfully walked onto the team. After preseason practices, Powell earned a starting role in the backfield and, four years and 82 games later, she finally gave up her starting position, but only due to graduation. Her remarkable and steady play earned her numerous awards, including All-America and All- BIG EAST accolades. Powell received first team all-conference honors in her junior and senior seasons after earning a place on the second team as a sophomore. She became the first BC women's player to earn first team recognition from the BIG EAST. As a senior, she emerged into the national spotlight and was an NSCAA/adidas second team All-American after garnering BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year honors. In addition, she played her way onto the Northeast region All-America team in each of her four years at the Heights. A native of Natick, Mass., Powell began her first professional season with the Breakers while still taking a full load of classes in her second semester of her senior year. 29 big east conference Winning on the athletic fields, in the arenas and in the classroom, The BIG EAST Conference continues its mission to be successful at the highest levels. In 2-1, the league again was well represented on the national scene by its studentathletes for accomplishments in academics and in athletic competition. Two national championships were added to the BIG EAST's list last year. The Connecticut men's soccer team won the 2 College Cup to give the league its second men's soccer title in the last five years. In women's basketball, the BIG EAST became the first conference to have two different teams win the national crown in back-to-back seasons when Notre Dame hoisted the trophy at the 21 Final Four. Connecticut had won in 2. Additionally, three student-athletes won individual titles in NCAA competition. Providence's Keith Kelly became the league's first NCAA men's cross country champion. Boston College runner Shannon Smith took the 3,-meter title at the 21 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship and Notre Dame's Ryan Shay was the 1,- meter champion at the outdoor meet. The BIG EAST has always been able to boast that some of its best students are also some of its best athletes. Ruth Riley, the 2-1 BIG EAST Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, was named the women's basketball national player of the year. She was also honored as the Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All- American Team Member of the Year. Boston College soccer player Chris Hamblin, the 2-1 BIG EAST Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, also earned first team All-America honors. Last year, 18 student-athletes earned academic All-America honors, including eight who were awarded first team accolades. For three of the last seven years a BIG EAST student-athlete has won the Honda- Broderick Cup as Collegiate Woman of the Year. Notre Dame soccer player Cindy Daws won in She followed Connecticut basketball players Rebecca Lobo (94-95) and Jennifer Rizzotti (95-96). BIG EAST student-athletes have continued their success after leaving the classrooms and playing fields. Former Connecticut women's basketball standout Dr. Leigh Curl was inducted into the GTE Academic All- America Hall of Fame in Former Georgetown men's basketball star Dikembe Mutumbo was named a winner of the President's Service Award, the highest honor in the U.S. for volunteer service. Whether it's the student-athletes or the league as an entity, moving forward successfully and exploring new horizons have been the norm rather than the exception for the conference that opened its doors in The conference welcomed Virginia Tech as its 14th full member in 2-1. In the spring of 21, the BIG EAST added women's lacrosse to its growing list of sports. When the 199s began, The BIG EAST Conference had just completed its eighth season with nine members. The league was arguably as healthy as a conference could be. The BIG EAST was a headline-grabber immediately, especially in men's basketball, its signature sport. The BIG EAST Football Conference did not exist. The 199s was a decade of enormous change in college athletics with conferences adding new members and new leagues beginning. The BIG EAST was no different than most groups. The league has had four separate expansions in the past 1 years. The BIG EAST Football Conference, with eight members, became a major player in college football immediately after its inception in The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John's, Georgetown and Syracuse Universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven-school alliance. After one season, Villanova was added and began play in Two seasons later, Pittsburgh joined the group and started competition in ' Miami was admitted in 199 and began BIG EAST competition in Rutgers, West Virginia and Notre Dame joined in 94 in two separate expansions and began play in While the membership has increased, the focus of the BIG EAST remains unchanged. It is a group that reflects a tradition of broadbased programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. The BIG EAST Conference has enjoyed a leadership role nationally. Its student-athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably reflect a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics. Any successful consortium enjoys outstanding leadership. Michael Tranghese, the league's first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate of Dave Gavitt, took over the Commissioner's reins in June, 199. The expansion in membership is only a portion of Tranghese's achievements. In his first year at the helm, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference in addition to coordinating the four expansions. BIG EAST sports attract the interest of followers in the nation's largest media markets including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, D.C., Miami, Pittsburgh and Hartford. The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST studentathletes. Exclusive long-range television contracts with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC provide BIG EAST basketball and football with more television exposure. While BIG EAST basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden, attendance figures also are significant at BIG EAST soccer, women's basketball and baseball games. More than 45 BIG EAST athletes have earned All-America recognition and dozens have won individual NCAA national championships. The BIG EAST has been well-represented in U.S. or foreign national and Olympic teams, with several athletes earning gold medals in the summer Olympiads in Sydney in 2, Atlanta in '96, Barcelona in '92, Seoul in '88 and Los Angeles in '84. The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5, athletes in 21 sports. 29

the bubble In any season, Boston College student-athletes are able to take advantage of the best in practice facilities thanks to "The Bubble. One of Boston College's newest athletic facilities, the bubble can handle all facets of the soccer team's off-season training regimen. The facility houses strength and conditioning workouts and scrimmages for the soccer team. Erected in December of 1998, the bubble cost approximately $2 million. The structure measures 36' x 21' and is 7' tall, covering the entire football field and extending a few feet beyond the endzones and sidelines. The bubble usually takes four hours to inflate and is wired for electrical power. It is heated and can reach 72 degrees Fahrenheit, though is usually kept at 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Special features of the bubble include a wind sensor to stabilize the frame when high wind gusts occur and a snow sensor to automatically raise the temperature on the exterior of the bubble to melt the snow. The facility has 13 exit doors, one handicap door and one cargo door. Each year the bubble is put up at the end of November and stays inflated until the end of March. Facility hours are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. "When the bubble was first built, we thought it would be a useful tool in our off-season workouts. But we never expected it to help as much as it has," head coach Alison Foley says. "Having this weather-proof facility through the winter also allows the team to train at the highest level without risking injury or sickness from the elements. "When you have a national-level program in soccer, you need to be able to compete and train year-round. The Bubble lets us do that now." Top: The team takes advantage of the bubble during winter training sessions. Middle: Sarah Rahko and Rachel Parri practice drills. 31 learning resources for student-atletes bc and the ncaa graduation report As Boston College enjoys great athletic success, the release of the NCAA Graduation Rates in the fall of 2 indicates that the school's student-athletes are also among the nation's best in the classroom. According to the NCAA report, the overall graduation rate of the school's athletes is fifth among all Division I-A programs. The 2 NCAA Graduation Rates Report, the 1th such survey issued by the association, covers students who enrolled between 199 and 1993 at 321 Division I schools, including 114 in Division I-A. The NCAA bases graduation rates on the raw percentage of studentathletes who entered an institution and graduated within six years. Students who leave or transfer, regardless of academic standing, are considered nongraduates. To succeed academically at Boston College, students must be disciplined in their study habits. Recognizing the time constraints posed by participation in athletics, the University s Office of Learning Resources for Student-Athletes lends a hand, offering a wide range of services: academic advising, counseling and tutoring. Working with coaching staffs and faculty, LRSA also monitors classroom attendance and academic progress on a regular basis. Dr. Ferna Phillips, Director of Learning Resouces for Student-Athletes, leads a professional staff of six and a tutoring staff of 4. Boston College s tradition of academic excellence is deeply rooted in its Jesuit heritage and philosophy of education, which encourages critical thinking and the use of knowledge to better society. BC s high standards of classroom achievment apply equally to athlete and non-athletes. The notion that young men and women can perform at a high level in both sports and academics is no ideal at Boston College, but a working reality. The prevailing academic atmopshere at Boston College is conductive to the success of BC student-athletes. Great teaching is a tradition that Boston College students appreciate: in the most recent survey of undergraduates opinions of the faculty, 93 percent rated their professors good to excellent. Senior faculty often choose to teach freshmen-level courses, and teaching and learning occur in settings outsides the classroom, wherever students and faculty meet. At the 21 Boston College All-Sports Banquet, Jillian Livolsi 1 was honored with the Academic Advisor s Award for Excellence. The award is presented annually to the senior student-athletes who best exemplify the spirit of hard work resulting in academic success and continued improvement. She sharded the award with Marty Hughes of the men s ice hockey team. 32 Boston College is Boston's College. BC is located on the doorstep of one of America's greatest cities, a center of culture and education for over three centuries. With its unmatched history and present-day status as the cultural, educational, athletic and commercial center of New England, Boston has garnered a well-deserved reputation as one of the truly great cities in American and, indeed, in the world. Boston, the capital of Massachusetts and the largest city in the six-state region of New England, is perhaps best known for its plethora of top-notch colleges and universities. It is also famous for a wide array of professional and amateur sports options and an appealing proximity to some of the Northeast's finest vacationing sports. With in a three-hour ride out of the city in all directions, those looking for a place to relax will find the area's nicest beaches, serene hiking areas and some of the top skiing in the nation. From "Southie" to the historic North End, Faneuil Hall to Boston Common, and high-rising skyscrapers to cobblestone streets, Beantown is a city for everyone. 32

boston: A city for everyone Education With hundreds of colleges and universities in Massachusetts, including more than 5 in greater Boston, the area sports the world's most concentrated collection of such institutions. Many of the country's top universities, including Boston College, are located in New England, and the Boston public school system is one of the oldest in the United States. History Bostonians led the charge for freedom during the Revolutionary War, as the so-called "Minutemen" - bolstered by such prominent patriots as Paul Revere, Sam Adams and John Hancock - fought and died for this country's independence. Today, the city is alive with perhaps America's greatest collection of historical sights, from the Old North Church in the North End to the U.S.S. Constitution in Boston Harbor. Region Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, scenic islands off the coast of Massachusetts, are well-known for their bike trails, historic lighthouses and meandering beaches. The "arm" of Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod serves as a relaxing summer haven for thousands of Bostonians, New Englanders and others. To the north, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine are the home of some of the most beautiful - and challenging - ski and hiking trails in the eastern U.S. Sports The Boston Marathon, traditionally run on Patriots' Day (the third Monday in April), is the world's oldest and most prestigious marathon. Major League Baseball's Red Sox play in the famed Fenway Park, one of the sport's most legendary venues. The NBA's Celtics are one of the most storied teams in all of sports, having won and unparalleled 16 world championships. The Bruins were one of the NHL's six original franchises. The NFL's New England Patriots, guided by star quarterback Drew Bledsoe, are annual contenders for the world championship. MLS' Revolution and the Breakers of the Women's United Soccer Association, are the newest professional teams to gain a faithful following in the area. 33

Boston College was founded in 1863 by the Society of Jesus to serve the sons of the Boston Irish immigrants. Today with an enrolment of 14,6 undergraduate and graduate students, Boston College has grown to become one of the largest Catholic universities in the nation, serving the sons and daughters of all 5 states and over 8 foreign countries. The growth Boston College has experienced has not just been in size, but also in stature and diversity. Today, it is ranked among the top 4 national universities by US News and World Report. Its Law School, Lynch School of Education and Graduate School of Social Work are listed among the nation's top 25 graduate programs in their disciplines, while the School of Nursing graduate program is among the top 35 and the Carroll School of Management MBA program is among the top 4. Boston College is among the nation's most selective universities, with more than 19, applications for approximately 2,1 seats in the freshman class of 25. It's endowment of over $1 billion is among the nation's 4 largest. After more than a century of growth and evolution, however, Boston College holds fast to the ideals that inspired its Jesuit founders. The University today remains focused on its mission of helping students develop their minds and talents while providing them with the motivation and compassion to use those talents in the service of others. "Deeply rooted in its Catholic and Jesuit origins, Boston College offers and education that is distinctive in spirit and content, that is doubly rich with the best of human thought and with the profound insights of faith," writes Rev. William P. Leahy, S.J., who assumed the presidency of Boston College in "We believe that Boston College provides a transforming experience for young men and women." A continued expression of this philosophy, based on the Jesuit principle of cura personalis, or care for the individual, is the faculty's dedication to teaching. Several BC faculty members have been honored for their teaching by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Education. Overall, the University's teaching commitment has been ranked among the nation's top 2, also by US News. A Boston College education focuses not just on intellectual development, but on personal, spiritual and physical development as well. As a result, students are asked to use their abilities, education and acquired skills to help others in need. Each year, more than 1,5 BC students provide more than 8, hours of volunteer service from Boston to Belize. In addition, nearly 2, student regularly take part in retreats and spiritual formational activities. Today, the Boston College motto "Ever to Excel" also extends to a broad array of extracurricular activities and opportunities ranging from the sports to the arts. Athletics is integral to the University's focus on the development of the whole person in body as well as in mind and spirit. BC offers 34 men's and women's varsity sports, all of which compete at the NCAA Division I level. Boston College annually has one of the highest graduation rates in Division I-A. The University is also home to a number of research centers that enrich intellectual and cultural life beyond the campus gates. Among these are the Jesuit Institute; the Center for Ignatian Spirituality; the Boise Center for Religion and American Public Life; the Social Welfare Research Institute; the Center for the Study of Testing, Evaluation and Educational Policy; the Burns Library of Rare Books and Special Collections; the Robsham Theater Arts Center; the McMullen Museum of Art; the Center for International Higher Education; the Center for Child, Family and Community Partnerships, the Center for Corporate Community Relations; the Center for Work and Family the Irish Institute; the Retirement Research Center and Weston Observatory. 36 When Gene DeFilippo was named director of athletics at Boston College on September 16, 1997, true to his style, he hit the ground running. Now, almost five years later, those efforts are paying huge dividends. DeFilippo has made a significant impact on the athletics program at Boston College, internally, in the Boston community, and from a national standpoint. DeFilippo has restructured the athletics department and hired top-notch administrators in the areas of business, operations and media relations. He initiated an impressive overhaul of BC's athletics capital that includes new football practice facilities; lighting, scoreboards and other improvements at Shea Field; renovations to Conte Forum, including a new sound system, floor and video boards; two new soccer fields on Newton Campus; new AstroTurf for Alumni Stadium; and an air-inflated bubble to cover the stadium turf to provide an indoor practice facility for all sports during the winter months. He re-named the Athletic Association's fundraising arm (formerly Blue Chips) in honor of longtime Athletic Director Bill Flynn. In the past four years, athletics has secured $23 million for the "Ever to Excel" capital campaign, which surpasses the total dollars raised by the athletic department from In those four years of the campaign, BC Athletics has secured 71 gifts of $5, or more, 49 of which were $1, or more. In 1998, the Barber family gift of $2.5 million to endow the position of head football coach was the largest in Athletics Department history. Fundraising broke all records in 2-21 as BC friends and supporters contributed and/or pledged more than $6.7 million. In athletic competition, DeFilippo guided Boston College to one its most successful years in history during Boston College won the NCAA Division I Championship in men's ice hockey as well as winning the HOCKEY EAST regular season and tournament titles. The football team won the Aloha Bowl on Christmas Day 2 as the squad advanced to its second-consecutive bowl contest. The men's basketball team won the BIG EAST East Division regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the second round of NCAA play. The women's cross country and men's soccer teams both won BIG EAST championship titles and both teams advanced to NCAA competition. The women's cross country squad finished fourth in the country in the national meet. Shannon Smith won the NCAA title in the 3,-meter indoor run while individuals from the men's and women's fencing and wrestling squads also took part in NCAA play. In 2-21, 358 BC student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3. or above, while the average GPA of all student-athletes was an impressive A total of 178 BC student-athletes were named to the BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team. The Office of Learning Resources for Student-Athletes dedicated a new study center in 2 and undertook an aggressive program to assist its graduates with job placement. gene defilippo director of Athletics During DeFilippo's tenure at BC, the women's basketball team has played in the NCAA tournament twice (1999, 21) and once in field hockey, (1998), women's soccer (2) and softball (1998). DeFilippo has spoken before literally dozens of alumni, media and community groups and introduced a five-year strategic plan that will result in an equal opportunity for participation by men and women in BC Athletics. "Gene's vision and commitment to the Boston College mission has helped position Eagle athletics positively for the future," says BIG EAST Conference commissioner Michael Tranghese. "He has great respect among his peers and should be commended for a job well done." He is extremely active on the national scene. He is the former BIG EAST representative to the NCAA Division I Management Council, the chair of the Executive Committee of the BIG EAST Basketball Conference and the chair of the HOCKEY EAST Television Committee. He is also member of the Executive Committee and third vice president of NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics), second vice president of the nation's Division I-A Athletics Directors organization and is a member of the Honors Courts of both the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. DeFilippo was named the 2-21 Division I- A Northeast Region NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year and was honored as the organization's annual convention in Salt Lake City in June of 21. DeFilippo won the Distinguished Alumni Award from Springfield College in 21. In April of 2, he was awarded the "I Migliori" plaque at the Pirandello Lyceum's annual awards banquet, honoring outstanding achievements and exemplary lives of Italian- Americans. At Boston College, DeFilippo is responsible for the administration and management of a broad-based athletic program committed to the pursuit of excellence in both intercollegiate competition and academic achievement. The Boston College program is comprised of more than 8 student-athletes participating in 34 men's and women's varsity sports, all of which compete at the NCAA Division I level, in addition to a wide variety of intramural, recreational and club sports. Boston College also is a member of the BIG EAST Conference and HOCKEY EAST. As both a top-level administrator and a former Division I football coach, DeFilippo brought to Boston College a wide range of experience on and off the field. From , he served as director of athletics at Villanova University, where he was named to the NCAA Division I Management Council. At Villanova, his tenure included the 1997 BIG EAST regular-season men's basketball tournament title; 1994 NIT men's basketball championship; two NCAA championships for women's cross country; and a Rhodes Scholar, among others. In addition to the NCAA Division I Management Council, DeFilippo was named to the NCAA Nominating Committee, the NCAA Special Committee on Marketing, Promotions and Licensing and the executive board of the Philadelphia Sports Congress. During his tenure, Villanova student-athlete scholastic averages rose to 2.89/4. overall during the academic year, a student-athlete was named a Rhodes Scholar and more than 2 Villanova studentathletes were named to the BIG EAST Conference Academic All-Star Team. Prior to his service at Villanova, DeFilippo was associate athletics director for external affairs at the University of Kentucky from In that time, annual private donations to the athletics department increased substantially. He also raised funds to build a new basketball training facility, helped to coordinate development of the largest collegiate radio network in the country and led the university's licensing program to a top 1 position nationally. Previously, DeFilippo had served as director of athletics at University of South Carolina at Spartanburg from and as director of administrative services for Vanderbilt University in His coaching experience includes three years as offensive backfield coach at Vanderbilt (198-82), which included a trip to the 1982 Hall of Fame Bowl. From , he was offensive coordinator at Youngstown State University, during which time the team won two consecutive Mid-Continent Conference Championships, During the 1973 and 1974 seasons, he was graduate assistant football coach for the University of Tennessee (ranked in the top 1 in 1973), coaching in the 1973 Gator Bowl and 1974 Liberty Bowl. A 1973 graduate of Springfield College with a bachelor of science degree, DeFilippo earned three varsity letters in football during his undergraduate career and graduated cum laude. He received a master's degree in educational administration - also with honors - from the University of Tennessee in DeFilippo and his wife, Anne, are the parents of three children - Christine, 25, a guidance counselor and women's basketball coach at Beaver Country Day School; John, 23, a graduate assistant football coach at the University of Notre Dame, and Mary, 16, a 11thgrader at Newton Country Day of the Sacred Heart. 36
