3 last time out strong free throw shooting in the final minute of play helped the marquette women s basketball team (6-18, 2-11) earn a double overtime victory at butler (12-12, 8-5) on sunday afternoon. Down the stretch the golden eagles hit 5- of-6 key shots at the foul line to secure their first road victory of the season. senior arlesia morse went 4-for-4 in that stretch, her only free throw shots of the day, and has now connected on 41 consecutive free throws. morse led four golden eagles in double figures with 18 points and four assists. Freshman Kenisha bell added 17 points, while classmate tia elbert and senior cristina bigica each added 12 points apiece. bigica notched her first double-double of the year with a team-high 11 boards. ijeoma uchendu paced butler with 27 points, 13 rebounds and four assists in 48 minutes of play. Series history marquette and st. John s have met 13 times over the years, with the golden eagles holding an 8-5 record. the red storm took the earlier season meeting, in new York. sunday is the 12th all-time meeting between mu and seton Hall. marquette owns a 7-4 record in the series, but the Pirates have won the last two games, including an decision in the first meeting this year. charity Stripe Success arlesia morse has hit 41 consecutive free throw attempts over the last six games. the last time she missed from the charity stripe was against Providence on Jan. 23. she leads the ncaa with a 93.3 percent shooting percentage. against georgetown on Feb. 1, morse sank a marquette record 17-for-17 shots at the free throw line. the ncaa record for consecutive free throws made is held by ginny Doyle who hit 60 at richmond in Senior night sunday marks mu s final home game of the season and the squad will honor seniors cristina bigica, chelsie butler, arlesia morse and apiew ojulu in a pregame ceremony. all four of the players who make up MArquette WoMen S BASKetBAll marquette's senior class have played in at least 100 games in their careers thus far. morse has 119 appearances with 85 starts, bigica has 117 appearances with 50 starts, butler has 111 appearances with 24 starts and ojulu has 103 appearances with 88 starts. Febuary is looking up after dropping their first 10 conference contests, the golden eagles have won two of their last three big east games, beating georgetown at home and butler on the road. With last sunday's win over the bulldogs in indianapolis, marquette became only the second big east team (leagueleading DePaul was the other) to beat butler on its home court. Back-and-Forth Basketball marquette claimed an victory last time out against georgetown, but the win did not come with ease by any means. the battle between the golden eagles and the Hoyas featured 32 lead changes as well as 17 ties, which were both season highs for marquette. the largest lead for each squad was seven points, with marquette s late second half surge serving as the determining factor in the win. ring the Bell Kenisha bell has been a stellar addition for the golden eagles this season. the freshman has recorded double digits in 19 games with four 20+ point-outputs, including a careerbest 25 against northen Kentucky. bell grabbed a career-best eight steals against nku, which is a big east game high for the year, and just one short of an mu single game record. Her 2.3 steals per game is fifth in the conference. the rookie ranks 11th in the league with 14.7 points per game and is the top scorer among true freshmen. A Youthful Season When comparing marquette to other teams in the big east, the golden eagles are relying on their newcomers more than any other squad this season. mu s freshmen have a combined 50 starts this year, more than any other team, while the percent of minutes played (42) and points scored (40) also is tops in the big east. 1. 4 georgetown is the only other program expecting its freshmen to produce at the same rate. of the Hoyas five newcomers they have combined for 48 starts, played 37 percent of the teams minutes and accounts for 35 percent of the scoring. Morse s career night arlesia morse lit up the floor against georgetown on Feb. 1. the senior poured in a career-best 30 points and was a perfect 17-for-17 from the foul line, which set a new marquette record. the senior is one of just six players in the big east this season to tally 30+ points. two with 20 the golden eagles had two players post 20+ points for the second time this season in a victory over georgetown on Feb. 1. arlesia morse led all scorers with a careerhigh 30 points, while freshman Kenisha bell poured in 23 points. the golden eagles also had two players with 20 or more points at Wake Forest on nov. 21. morse led mu with 26 points, while freshman tia elbert totaled a career-best 21 points. Morse code senior arlesia morse is averaging 14.8 ppg, which is 10th in the big east. she is the best free throw shooters in the country having gone 111-for-119 this season from the line and leads the country in shooting percentage (93.3). morse is the big east s third all-time leading scorer among active players with 1,467 career points. she is currently 10th on mu s career scoring list. Solid at the line the golden eagles are third in the big east from the charity stripe, shooting 71.0 percent, and has the most free-throws attempted (542) and made (385) in the conference. arlesia morse has missed just eight shots from the line all season. of marquette s 1,620 points scored this season, 23.7 percent (385) have come from the free-throw line. Freshmen Phenoms marquette freshmen have logged 42 percent of the golden eagles minutes and have scored 40 percent ( ) of its total points this season. Kenisha bell and tia elbert earned a spot in the starting lineup in their collegiate debut. the duo are the first freshmen to start for mu since the season when arlesia morse and apiew ojulu started in their freshmen debuts. Fast and Furious the golden eagles currently rank fourth in the big east averaging 67.5 points per contest. DePaul (88.0) and seton Hall (75.6) rank first and second, respectively. creighton is third averaging 68.8 points per night. mu totaled a season-high 86 points against loyola-chicago on nov. 17. Morse earns Preseason honors senior arlesia morse was selected to the Preseason all-big east squad. the Flint, mich. native is mu s leading returning scorer after averaging 11.5 points last year. morse came off the bench in 32 of the golden eagles 33 games last season and will be looked at for leadership on the court. Kieger Inks First recruiting class marquette university head women's basketball coach carolyn Kieger has announced the signing of her first recruiting class. Kieger will add six to her roster for the season as allazia blockton, erika Davenport, chelsey gibson, natisha Heideman, Danielle King, and amani Wilborn have signed national letters of intent and will arrive at marquette in the summer of Kieger's first recruiting class includes four top-150 recruits according to Prospects nation and three of the top five players from the state of Wisconsin. Marquette Picked 7th in BIG east Poll marquette was picked to finish seventh in the big east Preseason coaches Poll, two points behind sixth-place Providence. the golden eagles lose three starters from last year s squad that finished fifth in league play and advanced to the second round of the Wnit. "When carolyn graduated from marquette we all knew she would be successful at any profession she chose to pursue," former interim athletic Director bill cords said. "Fortunately for all of us, her chosen profession was coaching women's basketball. "carolyn is a dynamic person, both on and off the court, who has been able to transition her fierce competitiveness and striving for excellence as a player to a successful coaching career. she has been able to instill those qualities into the players she has coached." While at miami, Kieger was primarily responsible for guard development. she focused a lot of attention on refining the skills of the Hurricanes' star guard, shenise Johnson, who earned all-america and acc Player of the Year honors in , while the squad was crowned acc regular season champions. she also saw guard riquna Williams earn all-acc First team accolades and finish as the acc scoring leader with 21.7 points per game. "carolyn Kieger is an exceptional person with an extraordinary ability to get the most out of everyone she coaches and marquette has made an amazing hire," miami head coach Katie meier said. "carolyn leads with integrity and her value system permeates all of her decisions. she was an integral part of our success here at miami, and her impact on this program was immense. i am grateful for the time i had with her here at miami, and know she is more than ready to lead marquette. Her fire and passion for her alma mater is 100 percent authentic and it will resonate within (the marquette) community. i couldn't be more proud of her and am so happy she is pursuing her dream." as a player at marquette, Kieger was a four-year starter, three-year captain and is mu's all-time assists leader. she is the only player in program history with at least 1,200 career points, 400 career rebounds and 600 assists. For her career, Kieger averaged 10.3 points per game and was a second team all-big east selection for the season, as well as, a second team all-conference usa selection for the and seasons. During her senior campaign, she was a finalist for the nancy lieberman award, given to the nation's top point guard. in addition to her athletic accomplishments, Kieger received the big east conference's sportsmanship award as a senior. a native of roseville, minn., Kieger graduated cum laude from marquette university with a bachelor's degree in broadcasting and electronic communications in in 2007, she received the mccahill award given to a graduated mu senior student-athlete who demonstrated the highest performance in scholarship, leadership and athletics.
