More on Cintas Center history on page 9 of these notes. XAVIER VS. NO 1: This marks the 17th time that Xavier has faced off against the AP s top-ranked team but the first time since falling to Ohio State in overtime in the 2007 NCAA Tournament Second Round in Lexington, Ky. All three of Xavier s all-time wins vs. the AP No.1 team have come in its last five games vs. No. 1 teams. Six of Xavier s last seven No. 1 challenges have been nailbiters with the only exception being XU s blowout of undefeated St. Joseph s in the 2004 Atlantic 10 Tournament: Ohio State (OSU OT) - NCAA 2nd Rd St. Joseph s (XU 87-67) at U. of Dayton Arena Alabama (UA 65-58) at UA Cincinnati (XU 66-64) at Cincinnati Gardens Cincinnati (XU 71-69) at UC UMass (UM OT) at Cincinnati Gardens Indiana (IU 73-70) - NCAA 2nd Rd. in Indiana XAVIER HOSTING THE NO. 1 TEAM: Xavier has hosted the AP No. 1 team six times in its history and all six have been played at Cincinnati Gardens, including games versus Cincinnati (3), Kentucky (2) and Massachusetts (1). THE XAVIER-VILLANOVA SERIES: Villanova leads the series 22-4, including a win over Xavier at its on-campus gym on Dec. 31. Xavier freshman Edmond Sumner took a hard fall less than three minutes into the game, was taken to the hospital and missed the next three games after that on concussion protocol. XU actually led 5-4 after the ensuing free throws on that early foul but VU took advantage of a clearly shaken XU team to make a 13-0 run and never look back. Senior James Farr led XU with 15 points and seven rebounds, while senior Ryan Arcidiacono led VU with 27 points and eight assists. VU shots 63.2 percent (36-of-57) from the field, including 52.0 percent (13-of-25) from 3-point range. Villanova is the only team that Xavier has not beaten in BIG EAST play since joining the league for the season. LAST SEASON AT CINTAS CENTER: Xavier led No. 6 Villanova at halftime on Feb. 28, 2015 but the Wildcats came back to capture the win FOR THE RECORD (VILLANOVA): No. 1 Villanova, 24-3 overall and in first place at 13-1 in the BIG EAST Conference, is coming off its seventh straight win, a victory over Butler on Saturday. Xavier s 12 BIG EAST wins are the most since XU joined the league for the season. Xavier won its third straight game with an blowout victory at Georgetown on Saturday. Xavier led at halftime but dominated the second half, starting with a 13-0 run to start the half. XU shot 77.3 percent (17-of-22) from the field in the second half, including hitting 12 of its first 13 shots. Freshman Edmond Sumner led Xavier with a career-high 22 points. This is the 11th straight week that Xavier has been in the Top 10 of the AP Poll. XAVIER VS. THE AP TOP 25: Villanova is the seventh AP Top 25 challenge that Xavier has faced this season. Xavier is 5-1 so far this season against the AP Top 25, including its win over No. 23 Providence on Feb. 17. XU picked up a win at then-no. 10 Providence on Jan. 26. Xavier defeated then-no. 23 Cincinnati on Dec. 12, then-no. 9 Butler on Jan. 2 and won at then-no. 24 Michigan, on Nov. 20.
