3 2009 MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES SUMMER LEAGUE NOTES RECAP The Memphis Grizzlies showed signs of improvement as the season wound down, posting a 6-4 record in their final 10 games, including a four-game winning streak from March 30-April 4, their first under new head coach Lionel Hollins Their 5-4 record in April 2009 was the team s first winning month since April 2006 Memphis finished (.333) after Hollins took over as head coach on Jan. 25 after going record (.256) in the first 43 games before Hollins was hired. WE GOT THA-BEET! The Grizzlies were awarded the second overall selection in the 2009 NBA Draft, the club s highest since moving to Memphis in 2001, and used it to select 7-3 UConn center Hasheem Thabeet Thabeet, the Big East Co-Player of the Year along with Pittsburgh s DeJuan Blair and two-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year ( ), led Connecticut in rebounding (10.9), blocked shots (4.2, second in NCAA) and field goal percentage (.643) in guiding the Huskies to their first Final Four appearance since 2004 He is slated to become the first Tanzanian-born player to play in the NBA, as well as the tallest player in Grizzlies history. TOP BILLING Memphis is the only team out of the NBA s 21-team field whose schedule will feature all of the Top 3 picks in the 2009 NBA Draft. The Grizzlies, who selected Hasheem Thabeet with the No. 2 overall pick, will tip off their schedule against James Harden (No. 3) and the Oklahoma City Thunder on July 12 and then meet Blake Griffin (No. 1) and the Los Angeles Clippers on July 16 It will be the first time in Vegas Summer League history that the No. 1 and No. 2 picks will face off. UCONN-ECTION Memphis has a definite UConn flair on its summer league roster this season, boasting former Connecticut stars Hasheem Thabeet, Marcus Williams and Jeff Adrien Thabeet and Adrien were teammates in Storrs for three seasons ( ), leading the Huskies to the 2009 NCAA Final Four, while Williams and Adrien teamed together in the NCAA season along with Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay Gay and Williams were also members of the 2005 USA Men s U21 World Championship Team. SUMMER ENCORE The Grizzlies will make their third consecutive appearance in the Vegas Summer League after finishing with a 2-3 record in each of their first two outings Darrell Arthur, who averaged 9.8 points and 4.5 rebounds on 55.6 percent shooting in 17.2 minutes in five games in the 2008 Summer League, is the only returning member of the Grizzlies 2008 Summer League squad. WHO S YOUR DADDI? Hamed Haddadi may be making his first Vegas appearance, but he s no stranger to summer league play The 7-2 center, who became the first Iranian to play in the NBA last season, posted 14.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and 2.50 blocks in two games at the 2008 Rocky Mountain Revue in Salt Lake City against squads from the Utah Jazz and Dallas Mavericks NBA Commissioner David Stern allowed the Iranian national team to play two games against NBA competition to prepare for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. RUDY AND O.J. TO PARTICIPATE IN USA BASKETBALL MINI-CAMP Memphis Grizzlies players Rudy Gay and O.J. Mayo were two of 25 rising NBA stars invited to participate in the 2009 USA Basketball Men s National Team mini-camp that will be held July in Las Vegas, Nev Gay most recently led the Grizzlies in scoring (18.9 points) for the second consecutive season Mayo, the runner-up to the Chicago Bulls Derrick Rose for the NBA Rookie of the Year Award, led all first-year players in scoring (18.5 points) and minutes (38.0, 11 th in the NBA) and also set franchise rookie records in total points (1,516), field goals made (562), total minutes (3,210), three-point field goal percentage (.384) and free throw percentage (.879), which also broke the overall franchise record. YOUNG AND HUNGRY Memphis has one of the youngest rosters in the NBA, with nine players on the roster currently 24 years old or younger, including Darrell Arthur (21), DeMarre Carroll (22), Mike Conley (21), Marc Gasol (24), Rudy Gay (22), Hamed Haddadi (24), O.J. Named Big East Co Player of the Year along with Pittsburgh s DeJuan Blair and won his second consecutive Big East Defensive Player of the Year Award after averaging 13.6 points, 10.8 rebounds and 4.2 blocks (second in NCAA) and leading the Huskies to the Final Four in his junior season.
