2 The Game: Hofstra, coming off its season opening victory over Quinnipiac last Friday, will look to make it two in a row to start the season as they host the Raiders of Colgate University this evening. Streaks, Trends and Notes: Of the 10 players on the Hofstra roster, nine (3 Fr., 4 So. And 2 JC transfers) are in their first or second full year (McCollin reshirted her freshman year due to injury) with the program and the other one Amaka Agugua is out until at least the start of conference play due to off season surgery. Hofstra is 4 6 in its last 10 season openers, 5 5 in its last 10 home openers and 6 4 in its last 10 road openers. The Pride is looking to begin a season 2 0 for the first time since starting the campaign 4 0. Hofstra s 14 wins in were six more than they had in and their most in a season since winning 14 in the campaign. The last time a Hofstra Women s Basketball team had more than 14 victories in a season was in when the team had an overall mark of Hofstra s regular season record was just the fourth winning regular season since the program became Division I in The Pride had two win streaks at least three games last season, the last time Hofstra had two win streaks of at least three games was in (both four game streaks). Hofstra's 11 Colonial Athletic Association victories in are a school record for conference victories in a season and three more than Hofstra has had in any previous conference schedule. The (East Coast Conference) and (America East Conference) teams each won eight conference games. Hofstra has out rebounded 13 of its last 17 opponents, including Quinnipiac this season. Hofstra won its first eight home games last season. The eight straight wins to start the home schedule is the longest in school history. The eight game home court winning streak that ended with the loss to Delaware established a new school record for longest such streak at any point during the season. Previously, the Pride won six straight home games spanning the and seasons. Hofstra s bench outscored its opponents reserves, , in their 18 CAA games last season. Despite having only two players come off the bench against Quinnipiac, the Pride s reserves outscored the Bobcats bench, Hofstra has made a three pointer in 159 of its last 161 games. The Pride is 21 4 in their last 25 games when they hold their opponent under 60 points (6 2 last season). The 16 point win over Quinnipiac was Hofstra s first double digit win in a season opener away from home since defeating Lehigh to begin the season. 3 Coach Legette Jack: After turning heads in the collegiate basketball world in her second season in , Felisha Legette Jack enters her third year looking to continue the positive strides taken by her team last season. In her two seasons, Legette Jack has coached the Pride to a record and has had two all conference, four academic all conference and one All Metropolitan New York players under her tutelage. Legette Jack, the 10th head women's basketball coach in Hofstra history, guided her team to a record in and a second place tie in the conference standings after being picked seventh in the preseason poll. Legette Jack coached her squad to a school record 11 conference victories, including a win over Old Dominion that many consider the biggest win in school history. Hofstra s regular season mark was just the fourth winning regular season since the team became a Division I program in Legette Jack was rewarded for her efforts by being named Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year was an exciting and successful year for Legette Jack in other ways as well. During the summer of 2003, Legette Jack served as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2003 FIBA World Championship for Young Women in Sibenik, Croatia, and helped coach the team to a gold medal. Then in March 2004 she was named to the Big East Conference Silver Anniversary Women s Basketball Team, one of just 15 players selected. In her first campaign as head coach, Legette Jack guided the Pride to an 8 21 record and a first round win in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship, which was the Pride s first tournament win in five years. Legette Jack brought a wealth of collegiate coaching experience to Hofstra. She spent 11 seasons as a Division I assistant coach, with nine years in the Big East Conference at Syracuse University and Boston College, and two seasons in the Big Ten Conference at Michigan State University. Legette Jack came to Hofstra after serving for two seasons as an assistant coach at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. In , the Spartans, coached by former University of Maine Women's Basketball Coach Joanne P. McCallie, went But Michigan State followed that up with one of the top turnarounds in the NCAA in , going and advancing to the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) semifinals. It was the fifth most wins in school history and included three victories over nationally ranked programs. While at Michigan State, Legette Jack served as the recruiting coordinator and was responsible for signing the 14th ranked recruiting class in the country for the season. Three of those recruits were residents of the state of Michigan and were ranked in the top 61 in the nation. In addition, Legette Jack supervised the student athletes academic progress, and helped organize and direct Michigan State's preseason and postseason conditioning program. Prior to her two seasons at Michigan State, Legette Jack spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Syracuse University. Legette Jack was the recruiting coordinator at Syracuse and helped bring in two Gatorade Players of the Year. She was also in charge of organizing all team travel arrangements and coordinating the tape exchange program, while also taking care of the Orangewomen's conditioning schedule. During her tenure at Syracuse, her squads maintained a 100 percent graduation rate. Following graduation, Legette Jack was the head girls basketball coach at Westhill High School in Syracuse, New York. She compiled a record in two seasons there and had five players earn scholarships to Division I basketball programs. She then spent two years as an assistant coach at Boston College, where she oversaw the academic progress of a team with a 100 percent graduation rate, before moving on to Syracuse. The second leading scorer and all time leading rebounder in Syracuse history, Legette Jack is a 1989 graduate with a dual major in child and family studies, and psychology. Legette Jack scored 1,526 points and pulled down 927 rebounds during her career as an Orangewoman. Legette Jack was a three time All Big East selection, earned Kodak All American honorable mention accolades twice and was named the 1985 Big East Conference Rookie of the Year. She has also been named to three different Halls of Fame: Greater Syracuse Hall of Fame, Syracuse Urban League Hall of Fame and the Syracuse University Orange Plus Hall of Fame. Legette Jack and her husband, David, have one son, David Maceo (5) and reside in Hempstead, New York. 4 Strength of Schedule: The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) released its preseason strength of schedule rankings on November 5 and in both the overall and non conference rankings Hofstra's schedule was among the nation's top 100. The Pride was third in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in both rankings. Hofstra's non conference strength of schedule was rated as the 84th toughest in the nation. The Pride's non conference opponents compiled a record of (.552). In the non conference rankings, Hofstra ranked behind only Old Dominion (#4) and George Mason (#36) among CAA schools. In the overall strength of schedule rankings, the Pride schedule was ranked at #98, with its opponents putting together a mark. Once again, only Old Dominion (#77) and George Mason (#92) topped the Pride. 5 Lights, Camera, Action: With their victory over Princeton on December 13 of last season, the Hofstra Women s Basketball team improved to 3 0 over the past three seasons when televised by Fox Sports New York at Hofstra Arena. If you count their two CAA Sun Trust Game of the Week telecasts they are 4 1 on television in the past three seasons. This season, the Pride will appear on television on December 9 vs. Massachusetts (Metro TV) and on February 6 vs. William & Mary (Fox Sports NY). Both games will be in the friendly confines of Hofstra Arena. The Pride, who has played seven overtime games since their last extra session victory, last lost an overtime game on November 30 of last season when they were defeated by Canisius, 78 74, at the Binghamton Time Warner Classic. On January 26, 1984, the Pride defeated Marist College, 61 60, for their last overtime win. Pride Signs Four for : Christina Biedny, Kristina Campbell, Emily Medders and Nicole Williams have all signed letters of intent to join the Hofstra Women s Basketball program and play for the Pride beginning in the season, it was announced today by Hofstra University Head Women s Basketball Coach Felisha Legette Jack. We have signed an exceptional group of young ladies, both academically and athletically, who will join our family next year and assist us in realizing our goals and dreams of winning championships and advancing to the NCAA Tournament, stated Legette Jack. These four studentathletes, combined with the seven freshmen and sophomores on the current roster, will give us a great foundation for the future. Biedny, a 6 5 center from East Amherst, New York, averaged 17 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks last season at Clarence High School in Clarence, New York. Biedny, who plays basketball and volleyball for the Red Devils, set a school record with 115 blocks in Biedny was named All WNY honorable mention in 2003, ECIC second team allstar in 2003, and team most valuable player in 2003 and Campbell, a 6 1 forward from Princeton, New Jersey, will join the Pride from Notre Dame High School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. Campbell averaged 8.5 points and nearly 10 rebounds a game last season for the 20 5 Irish, under the direction of Coach Ann DeMille. She was recently named honorable mention All American by Street & Smith Magazine. Campbell s sister, Michelle, is a junior forward on the #17th ranked Rutgers basketball team and her father, Melvin, played for the Oakland Raiders in Medders, a 6 2 forward from Westlake Village, California, has played three years of basketball and ran track for Oak Park High School in Oak Park, California. A second team allleague pick for the Eagles, Medders averaged 8.4 points and 7.1 rebounds as a junior last season under Coach Bob DeCorsi. Medders, whose sister, Lyndsey is a sophomore guard on the Iowa State women s basketball team, was one of roughly 400 high school students nationwide to be selected to participate in the National Young Leaders Conference, which took place in late October in Washington, D.C. Williams, a 5 6 guard from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a three time all section performer at Seton La Salle High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She averaged 19 points, six steals, five assists and three rebounds a game for the 19 5 Lady Rebels during her junior campaign and was named Associated Press All Pennsylvania. Williams has scored more than 1,200 points in her career at Seton La Salle, which ranks second all time in school history behind former Penn State University and WNBA star and current Minnesota Lynx head coach Suzie McConnell Serio. Gidden Earns CAA Accolades: Hofstra University sophomore center Vanessa Gidden (Stamford, CT/Stamford) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week today, it was announced by the conference office. Gidden scored a career high 21 points in the Pride s season opening win over Quinnipiac last Friday. The sophomore from Stamford, Conn. Shot 8 of 12 from the field and 5 of 8 from the free throw line. She also notched five rebounds and a game high four blocks. Double Your Fun: Hofstra finished the campaign with 11 double doubles. All the doubledoubles last season were of the point/rebound variety. 7 SEASON NOTES Game one vs. Quinnipiac: Hofstra trailed only twice early in the first half and cruised to a win over the Bobcats on November 19 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The Pride opened up a 10 point lead at the half and pushed it to as many as 26 with 3:48 remaining before earning the 16 point victory. Hofstra was led by Vanessa Gidden, who posted a career high 21 points. Lizanne Murphy added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Pride first double double of the season.
