2 The Games: Following their win over Quinnipiac in their home opener, Hofstra travels to Vestal, New York to take part in the Binghamton Time Warner Classic. The Pride finished second in both of their inseason tournaments last season, and last won an inseason tournament in when they defeated St. John s (61-34) and San Diego (57-52) to win the SJU Thanksgiving Tournament. Streaks, Trends and Notes: - Hofstra is 1-1 to start the year for the third consecutive season and the fourth time in the past five years. - The game against the Tar Heels marked Hofstra s first against a ranked opponent since February 22, 2002 when the Pride dropped a decision to #18 Old Dominion. The #14 Tar Heels were also the highest ranked team that Hofstra has ever faced. - Hofstra will be facing each of their first three opponents this season for the first time in the program s history. If they face North Texas on day two of the Time Warner Classic, it will then be four straight to open the year. - Hofstra is 3-7 in their last 10 season openers (including UNC), 5-5 in their first road game (including UNC) of the season and 5-5 in their first home game (including QU) of the season. Last season, the Pride won their season opener, home opener and road opener for the first time since the campaign. - Hofstra has lost 13 straight road games. It is Hofstra s longest road losing streak since losing 13 in a row spanning the and seasons. - The Pride went 0-18 from three-point range against Old Dominion on January 26, 2003 ending a string of 67 straight games with at least one three-pointer. - Hofstra has made a three-pointer in 132 of their last 134 games. - The Pride is 15-2 in their last 17 games when they hold their opponent under 60 points. DeFleur Athletic Director: Joel Thirer Series Meetings with BINGHAMTON: Today s game marks the first-ever meeting between Hofstra and Binghamton. Hometown Flavor: Hofstra has seven players on their roster from the New York tri-state area, including two of the freshmen. The players from the Empire State are: senior Staceyann Claxton (Hempstead, NY) and redshirt freshman Cigi McCollin (Long Island City, NY). Hailing from the Garden State are: senior Tara Dilworth (Sparta, NJ), senior Rume Pela (Cherry Hill, NJ), freshman Shalamar Oakley (Camden, NJ) and freshman Lana Harshaw (Wildwood, NJ). Freshman Vanessa Gidden is from the Constitution State (Stamford, CT). New Look, Same Goal: Although the Pride returns only five letterwinners from a season ago, the goal of pursuing championships remains the same. Hofstra has added four talented freshman, one sophomore transfer and one junior college transfer. In addition, Hofstra returns two players (Dilworth and McCollin) who redshirted during the season. If you are adding at home, that means that the Pride roster includes eight players who were not on the active roster at the end of the season. 3 Coach Legette-Jack: In her first campaign as Head Coach, Legette- Jack guided the Pride to an 8-21 record. She coached the squad to a first round win in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship, which was the first tournament win in five years, and saw her star player Jen Brickey earn second team all-conference and first team All-Metropolitan New York accolades. Brickey and Lauren Hall- Gregory were also named to the CAA All-Academic team. This past summer, Legette-Jack represented the United States as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2003 FIBA World Championship for Young Women in Sibenik, Croatia, and helped coach the team to a gold medal. "I am thrilled and excited about the upcoming season," Legette-Jack stated. "Our goal this season remains to pursue championships on and off the court. Our President and Administration have done a wonderful job of supporting our program and we are working together to take Pride Women s Basketball to the next level. We will work hard to generate excitement for women s basketball by playing with purpose, passion and pride, and look forward to becoming an integral part of the Long Island community. I feel continually blessed to have been given the opportunity to coach here at Hofstra University. Legette-Jack brought a wealth of collegiate coaching experience to Hofstra. She spent 11 seasons as a Division I assistant coach, with nine years in the Big East Conference at Syracuse University and Boston College, and two seasons in the Big Ten Conference at Michigan State University. Legette-Jack came to Hofstra after serving for two seasons as an assistant coach at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. In , the Spartans, coached by former University of Maine Women's Basketball Coach Joanne P. McCallie, went But Michigan State followed that up with one of the top turnarounds in the NCAA in , going and advancing to the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) semifinals. It was the fifth most wins in school history and included three victories over nationally ranked programs. While at Michigan State, Legette-Jack served as the recruiting coordinator and was responsible for signing the 14th-ranked recruiting class in the country for the season. Three of those recruits were residents of the state of Michigan and were ranked in the top 61 in the nation. In addition, Legette-Jack supervised the student-athletes academic progress, and helped organize and direct Michigan State's preseason and postseason conditioning program. Prior to her two seasons at Michigan State, Legette-Jack spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Syracuse University. Legette-Jack was the recruiting coordinator at Syracuse and helped bring in two Gatorade Players of the Year. She was also in charge of organizing all team travel arrangements and coordinating the tape exchange program, while also taking care of the Orangewomen's conditioning schedule. During her tenure at Syracuse, her squads maintained a 100-percent graduation rate. Following graduation, Legette-Jack was the head girls basketball coach at Westhill High School in Syracuse, New York. She compiled a record in two seasons there and had five players earn scholarships to Division I basketball programs. She then spent two years as an assistant coach at Boston College, where she oversaw the academic progress of a team with a 100-percent graduation rate, before moving on to Syracuse. The all-time leading scorer and rebounder in Syracuse history, Legette-Jack is a 1989 graduate with a dual major in child and family studies, and psychology. Legette-Jack scored 1,526 points and pulled down 927 rebounds during her career as an Orangewoman. Legette-Jack was a three-time All-Big East selection, earned Kodak All-American honorable mention accolades twice and was named the 1985 Big East Conference Rookie of the Year. She has also been named to three different Halls of Fame: Greater Syracuse Hall of Fame, Syracuse Urban League Hall of Fame and the Syracuse University Orange Plus Hall of Fame. Legette-Jack and her husband, David, have one son, David Maceo (4) and reside in East Meadow, New York. Quinnipiac opened the second half on an 11-3 run to erase a halftime deficit, and pushed their advantage to as many as nine following an 8-0 run midway through the half. With Quinnipiac leading with 7:46 to play, the Pride gradually cut into the deficit and were able to reclaim the lead at after a McCollin layup with 1:22 to play.
