When cooking, cover pots and pans to keep the heat in and the kitchen cool. Make Smart Swap Outs Many electronics continue to use energy even when they are switched off, however, you may wish to switch to ENERGY STAR certified alternatives, which are designed to conserve this energy usage, while still maintaining functions like clock displays, channel settings and remote control functions. Also, seek out the ENERGY STAR certified label when shopping for appliances like washers, dryers and refrigerators. Know Your Score Another great step to save energy is to measure your home s energy efficiency with a Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index Score from the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET), a non-profit standards-making body for building energy efficiency rating and certification systems. More than 2 million homes across the country have a HERS Index Score, which tells homeowners and prospective buyers how their homes compare to other similar ones in terms of energy usage. Think of it as the home industry s version of the MPG (miles per gallon) rating that you find in the auto industry. The lower a home score, the higher its efficiency. Knowing your score can help you evaluate where to make changes to your home, from sealing leaks in your heating and cooling distribution system to updating your roof in order to be more energy efficient, says Steve Baden, executive director of RESNET. 6 6 Sports Royals dig deep late, overcome Millers By CRAIG ADKINS In a game where it was glaringly obvious that both of these two Hoosier Crossroads Conference rivals were in dire straits for a league win, something was bound to happen for one. It happened for Hamilton Southeastern, who used a late score to get past Noblesville Friday night at Reynolds Royals Stadium. Noblesville was forced to punt on the opening drive and Hamilton Southeastern's Anthony Eggers returned the punt into Miller territory to the 42. The Royals would find their way all the way down to the 1-yard line of Noblesville before they would be stopped by the Millers' defense on fourth and goal, just shy of the end zone. The Millers would take over on their own one, but it wouldn't go too far. On the second play of the short-lived drive, Rutger Poiry came storming into the backfield and immediately tackled tailback Christian Collier in the end zone for a safety and a 2-0 Southeastern lead. Forcing the Royals to go three and out, Noblesville punted, and was fortunate to recover a fumble at the HSE 42. Just into the second quarter, Luke Blevins dove over the goal line from one yard out for a touchdown to put the Millers ahead 7-2. The next HSE drive resulted in three plays and lining up to punt once again. Noblesville punt returner Wyatt Blades called for a fair catch, but tipped the ball, making it a live ball and the fumble was recovered by the Royals' Eric Dailey at the Miller 45. The next few plays fizzled out and the ball was punted back to Noblesville. Trading punts twice each on four straight drives, it felt like someone had to get something right in the second quarter. Noblesville got itself in position to put points on the board before halftime and they went to the trusty right foot of Jack Knight. The junior placekicker nailed a 47-yard field goal as time expired for a 10-2 Miller lead after two quarters. It would feel like a tale of two halves offensively for the visiting Millers. Starting their second series of the third in great field position at the HSE 38, Noblesville looked to be in a great spot to score again. They must have been thinking a little ahead, as quarterback Grant Gremel tossed his first interception of the night to Isaiah Reporter photos by Kent Graham Hamilton Southeastern s Jackson Sweeney (left) and Noblesville s Dalton Davis scramble for the ball during the Royals-Millers game Friday at Hamilton Southeastern. Southeastern s Kody Sparks prepares to make a pass.

7 Sports 7 ROYALS From Page 6 Phillips. The same result happened when the Millers had the ball again. This time, it was linebacker Anthony Eggers that snagged the pick. Two interceptions by the HSE defense, but they wouldn't account for anything on the scoreboard for the Royals. We were way too casual. We were way too undisciplined on the offensive side of the ball and it led to us scoring 10 points, turning the ball over four times and not being able to have our defense's back, Noblesville head coach Jason Simmons on his team's overall play at Hamilton Southeastern on Friday night. Casual is exactly how Southeastern saw Noblesville's defense playing and they were able to counter it with a little off the wall final half of the fourth quarter. On first down at their own 37 to start the drive with 6:40 left, the HSE offense pulled a trick out of their playbook. Nick Mutchner reeled in a screen pass in the right flat and quickly threw the ball for a double-pass to Stoan Slaybaugh up the field 41 yards, completely catching the Noblesville defense off guard. The big double-pass helped set up Tyler Melser's 37-yard field goal that would cut the deficit in half at The Millers next possession started at their own 20 and would end right there, as tailback Luke Blevins fumbled the handoff from Gremel, giving Hamilton Southeastern the ball back, in prime position at the Miller 20. Southeastern has experimented with both Kody Sparks and Cody Huppenthal playing quarterback for the Royals this season. Sparks has the better arm and Huppenthal can run with the ball. Plain and simple. We knew they were a different offense with him back there. We knew they were going to try to run the football more and he had some carries, Simmons on HSE's change to Huppenthal at QB in the final minutes of the game. Following the Miller turnover, Huppenthal called his own number and bootlegged left to the far side of the field, racing and reaching the front corner of the end zone to put the Royals on top with 3:18 left. Ben Boysen converted the two-point conversion with a run to the left corner, making it That's the package we've got and we practice it all the time, Hamilton Southeastern head coach Scott May on the Royals late surge in the fourth with Huppenthal in at QB. Trading punts again, which seemed to be a common theme most of the night, Noblesville had one final possession with 1:12 left, but had no timeouts and had to start from their own 11. Gremel would try to put the Millers in position to either get into Knight's field range to tie or drive further in an effort to win the game, but neither became a factor. The junior QB would throw his third INT of the night, again to Isaiah Phillips, his second of the game. That would seal the Millers' fate and HSE would kneel to run the clock out. Hamilton Southeastern (3-4, 2-3 HCC) will host Brebeuf Jesuit next Friday in their final regular season home game. Noblesville (1-6, 0-4 HCC) will also play their final game at home, hosting the surging Brownsburg Bulldogs (5-2, 3-1 HCC), who beat Zionsville on Friday. 8 8 Sports Rebels run past Tigers in fourth quarter Fishers engaged in a back-and-forth game with Roncalli on Friday before the Rebels took over in the fourth quarter and won at Reynolds Tigers Stadium. Roncalli, the No. 1-ranked team in Class 5A, led by 14-0 in the second quarter, but the Tigers wworked their way back to within by halftime. Emmanuel Davis took a kickoff return to the Tigers' 44-yard line, then Ben Norton got Fishers on the board with a 48-yard field goal. On the next drive, Seth Sontich forced a fumble, which gave the Tigers good field position. Fishers took advantage, as Matt Wolff ran the ball in from six yards to score. Fishers got its next score in the third quarter to take a lead. HL Lewis made a 50-yard run to get the Tigers inside the Roncalli five, but a fumble gave the Rebels the ball back. Luke Uribe made two tackles to force a punt. Lewis took over again, making a long run to get the ball inside the red zone, then scoring from the eight-yard line. Roncalli scored early in the fourth quarter to take back the lead, then the Rebels intercepted a Fishers pass to get the ball back. Roncalli scored on a long drive with under four minutes left in the game. With the loss, Fishers dropped to 3-4 on the season. Unfortunately, the rest of the game was all about the Blue Devils. Tipton held the Blackhawks scoreless in the last three quarters and eventually won at the Blue Devils' field. It was a game between two teams that are ranked No. 6 in their respective classes (Sheridan in 1A, Tipton in 2A). The 'Hawks led 14-7 after the first quarter. Ange Gnamkey took a kickoff return from one end of the field to the other, scoring a 91-yard touchdown midway through the period. Late in the quarter, Joe Callahan scored on a six-yard run. Gunnar Williams kicked both extra points. But the Blue Devils scored 13 points in the second period to take a halftime lead, then added one touchdown each in the third Callahan and fourth quarters. Penalties became an issue for both teams: Tipton had 12 for 100 yards, while Sheridan had nine flags for 126 yards. "We just gave one away, really," said a disappointed Blackhawks coach Bud Wright after the game. "Too many penalties killed us. Penalty after penalty killed us." Callahan was the leading rusher with 92 yards in 26 carries. Drake Delph went 7-of-14 from the air totaling 72 yards, with Cole Cummings making three of those catches. The loss ended a five-game winning streak for Sheridan, which is now 5-2 on the season. The Blackhawks will travel to Eastern next Friday to finish out Hoosier Heartland Conference play. 9 Sports 9 Huskies comeback falls one point short By RICHIE HALL Reporter Sports Editor Sometimes when you go for two, it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Hamilton Heights went for two last year against Twin Lakes, and won the game. This year, the Huskies trailed the Indians 14-0 in the fourth quarter, but made a comeback by scoring two touchdowns. After the second touchdown, Heights trailed with 1:40 left in the game. The Huskies went for two, but this time it wasn't meant to be. Heights' pass was batted away by a Twin Lakes defender, and the Indians would hold on to win. "The thought process is: One, we had some momentum coming in and scoring late there and having a chance to win," said Huskies coach Mitch Street. "And then secondly, playing that offense for four downs for 10 yards is tough. I think that's just really tough to do, and I'll ride that momentum most times." "I've been fortunate enough to convert some of those and if you convert it, you look like a genius, and if you don't, you get a lot of second questions, myself included," said Street. "I made the decision and I'll live with it." Both of Heights' touchdowns were passes from Tyler Andis to Michael Cross, who was named Homecoming King during halftime. Cross stepped up like royalty, making a 19-yard catch with 8:32 remaining, then a 16-yard reception with 1:40 left to set up the Huskies' two-point try. "I thought our kids fought really hard," said Street. "I loved the way they just kept grinding to get themselves in the game. And there's been times this year when we've not been that team that's going to keep grinding. Tonight we did." Andis had a great game, completing 9-of-18 passes for 160 yards. Camron Knott caught four of those passes, while Cross totaled three. Blake Webel was the leading rusher with 48 yards on the ground. The Huskies are 1-6 for the season. They are back at the Husky Dome next Friday to play Western in their final Hoosier Conference game of the season. Carmel's points all came in the second half. Matt Fortier booted a 43-yard field goal midway through the first quarter. Then with 15 seconds left in the second period, Jake McDonald found Jack Rodimel for a six-yard touchdown pass. Fortier converted the extra point kick. That got the 'Hounds within at halftime, but they would get no closer. Ben Davis added another touchdown in the fourth quarter to make the score the final margin. McDonald finished the game 10-of-20 from the air, totaling 92 yards. Dylan Downing was the leading rusher, traveling 115 yards on 32 carries. Carmel is now 4-3 for the season, and 3-2 in the Metropolitan Conference. Next up for the Greyhounds is Warren Central, the No. 4 team in 6A, in a game next Friday at Carmel Stadium. Westfield, the two-time runnerup, is currently in second place after the first round with a score of 316. The Shamrocks will play the lead group with Evansville North and Zionsville (more about that in a minute.) Carmel and Fishers are tied for fifth place with 329s, while Hamilton Jocelyn Bruch Westfield Southeastern is presently seventh with a 330. The Eagles wowed everyone with their first-round score of 299, which is a team total 11 over par. Zionsville's score sets a new 18-hole record for the girls state meet, breaking Carmel's mark of 300, which was set while the Greyhounds were winning the 2013 state title. Westfield finished its round early, and was able to take second. Jocelyn Bruch is currently tied for seventh with a three-over par 75, while Cailyn Henderson carded a 78. "I'm more excited to be in the last group," said Shamrocks coach Trevor Neu. "We would've liked to have shot a better number today, but we just didn't have everything really clicking for us today." Nevertheless, Westfield will play with Zionsville and current thirdplace holder Evansville North. Tee times for that group are between 10:27 and 11:03 a.m. today off the first tee. That's where Neu wanted his team, so that it could keep an eye on the Eagles and be ready to make a charge. Carmel had consistent rounds Morgan Lewis Fishers from everyone, with Erin Evans shooting an 81 and Katie Kuc an 82. The Greyhounds will join Fishers and Columbus North off the first tee between 9:42 and 10:18 a.m. today. The Tigers got a great round from Morgan Lewis, who is tied for seventh with a 75. Anna DelPrince was next in line with an 83. "Very happy to be going off the front tee," said Fishers coach Danny Smith. "That was one of our goals for today was to make sure we finished high enough so that we didn't have to start on the back nine." The Royals will also be starting off the first tee, between 8:57 and 9:33 a.m. Haleigh Gray led HSE with a 78, while Chelsea Morrow and Nicole Dillow both carded 82s. Guerin Catholic's Angelica Pfefferkorn, playing as an individual, scored an 84. She will go off the 10th tee at 10:18 a.m. TEAM SCORES: Zionsville 299, Westfield 316, Evansville North 318, Columbus North 326, Carmel 329, Fishers 329, Hamilton Southeastern 330, Homestead 332, Culver Academies 349, Lafayette Jefferson 353, Evansville Memorial 349, Valparaiso 362, Bishop Dwenger 367, DeKalb 381, Bedford North Lawrence 391.
