LAST TIME OUT In its lone exhibition game prior to the season, the Ducks defeated Westmont on Sunday. The two teams went back-and-forth for the first few minutes, until UO true freshman and Eugene native Lexi Bando got hot from deep. She made two three-pointers in a span of three possessions to push the Ducks ahead 18-10, and Oregon progressively pulled away from there. A fastbreak layup by Drea Toler and a basket by Jillian Alleyne just before the halftime buzzer gave the Ducks a lead at the break. The second half started slow, until Oregon again got hot from long range. Lexi Petersen hit consecutive three-pointers following one by Amanda Delgado, and Petersen added a third straight basket for a lead. Megan Carpenter s turnaround jumper in the post in the final minute gave Oregon its biggest advantage at All five starters scored in double figures, led by Petersen s 17 points. Alleyne had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. KELLY GRAVES ERA BEGINS The Ducks begin the Kelly Graves era on Friday against Utah State. Oregon hired Graves on April 7, 2014 after a sensational 14-year run at Gonzaga. Graves led the Bulldogs to 10 straight WCC titles, losing just 12 total WCC games in that stretch. Graves took the Bulldogs to seven NCAA Tournaments, including three Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite Eight run. He was an eight-time WCC Coach of the Year selection. Graves is the seventh head coach in Oregon women s basketball history. GAME NOTES ALLEYNE PRESEASON ALL-PAC-12 Jillian Alleyne was named to the five-member preseason all-pac-12 team by the league s media (coaches do not pick a preseason team). Alleyne was joined on the team by Cal s Brittany Boyd and Reshanda Gray, Stanford s Amber Orrange and Washington s Jazmine Davis. DUCKS PICKED NINTH IN PRESEASON Oregon was picked to finish ninth in both the coaches preseason poll and the media preseason poll. The two polls differed on the champion, as the coaches picked Stanford to win while the media chose Cal. OREGON RECEIVING VOTES Despite a record last year, the new hire of Kelly Graves has caught the attention of media and coaches around the country. Oregon picked up five votes in the preseason AP poll while scoring eight votes in the preseason coaches poll. Oregon has not been ranked in the top-25 since the season. The last time the Ducks received votes was during the campaign. TRAINING TRIP Prior to their exhibition game against Westmont, the Ducks hit the road for a team trip to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. On the court where Team USA picks its Olympians, Oregon held a joint practice with Oklahoma on the morning of Nov. 1. The teams took a break for lunch before playing a scrimmage in the afternoon. The teams then ate dinner together off site. It was believed to be the first time two college teams had played at the Olympic Training Center. Graves spent two summers on the campus (2012 & 2013) for U18 and U19 National Team tryouts prior to FIBA Americas and FIBA World Championship competition. 6 HC KELLY GRAVES A PROVEN WINNER - HEAD COACH KELLY GRAVES Kelly Graves was named the seventh head coach in Oregon women s basketball history on April 7, This is Graves fourth head coaching position, previously leading the programs at Big Bend Community College ( ), Saint Mary s ( ) and Gonzaga ( ). Graves coaching career started at Big Bend CC in Moses Lake, Wash., where he accepted an assistant coaching position on the men s team, but after the women s coach left the program, he moved over to lead the women s program. In three seasons ( through ) Gaves took a four win team his first season to a record in his final year. Graves left Big Bend CC to become an assistant coach under Jim Sollars at the University of Portland prior to the season. Oregon has gotten a real gem, Sollars said when Graves took the job at Oregon. I might be biased because he s a great friend of mine, but Kelly is a phenomenal coach and one of the best recruiters I have ever come across. His teams run well, score well and play excellent defense. He s going to be very successful at Oregon. Following four years with the Pilots, Graves was named the head coach at Saint Mary s for the campaign. EXPERIENCE Oregon Experience 1st Season Oregon Record - Collegiate Experience 21st Season Collegiate Record Alma Mater New Mexico, 1988 HEAD COACHING CAREER Big Bend CC ( ) Three seasons at the helm Took a four win team to a record in his final season. Originally took a job as an assistant with the men s team but was named the women s head coach when the position opened up. Saint Mary s ( ) Three seasons as head coach Took the head job at Saint Mary s after working as an assistant for four seasons at Portland. Took Saint Mary s to its first NCAA Tournament in Gonzaga ( ) Took the Zags to seven NCAA Tournaments in his 14 years as the head coach, including two Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite Eight furing the season. Eight-time WCC Coach of the Year 10-straight WCC titles ( ) Went 5-23 in his first season in Spokane, including a 0-14 record in WCC play. Lost just 12 total WCC games in his final 10 seasons. Graves advanced to his first NCAA Tournament with the Gaels during the season, his second of three seasons at Saint Mary s, and went to seven more over 14 seasons at Gonzaga. Graves left Saint Mary s for Gonzaga for the seasons. His first year with the Bulldogs, his team went 5-23, including 0-14 in WCC play. But by his third year at Gonzaga, the Bulldogs went overall and went to the WNIT the following season. Gonzaga won the first of 10 straight WCC titles under Graves during the campaign when his squad went 28-4 overall and 14-0 in league play. Including that year, Graves and Gonzaga lost just 12 total conference games over his final 10 years leading the program. Gonzaga s first NCAA Tournament appearance came in , when the Bulldogs went and 13-1 in WCC, and after a WNIT bid in , Gonzaga advanced to six straight NCAA Tournaments. Graves and the Zags advanced to the Sweet 16 for three straight years (2010, 2011, 2012) and went to the Elite 8 in Overall, Graves brings eighth West Coast Conference Coach of the Year awards and a (.696) Div. I head coaching record to Eugene, with a record overall. Kelly Graves is a great guy and one of the best coaches in America, said UConn head coach Geno Auriemma. Oregon is a place with tremendous women s basketball potential and Kelly is the perfect person to lead the Ducks to the next level. I won t be surprised when Oregon is competing for Pac-12 championships, and contending on a national level, in the near future. Graves is an active member of the WBCA (Women s Basketball Coaches Association) and currently sits on the Board of Directors. Graves added USA Basketball to his resume in the summer of 2012, becoming an assistant coach with the U18 women s basketball squad and helping the team to a gold medal at the 2012 FIBA Americas. He again coached for USA Basketball in the summer of As an assistant with Team USA, he helped the U19 squad with the FIBA World Championship for Women. Another coach on the U19 staff was current Miami head coach, Katie Meier. Kelly is a tremendous teacher of the game, Meier said. His teams are always disciplined, smart, fun to watch and display the same enthusiasm and love for the game that he possesses. He builds winning cultures first, which leads to championship teams. Oregon has made a tremendous hire. Kelly is a talented coach full of integrity and a man who treats his players as family. Graves and his wife Mary have three sons - Maxwell Joseph (1995) Jackson Obde (1997) and William Kelly (2000). 6 Oregon Women s Basketball Game Notes
