PORTLAND STATE The Ducks own a advantage over Portland State in the all-time series between the two in-state foes. Last year the Ducks defetaed the Vikings, Oregon had six players score in double-figures, led by Lexi Petersen s 22 points. Maite Cazorla nearly posted a triple-double with 16 points plus 12 assists and seven steals, both career-highs. The 122 points the Ducks scored is the most by the team under Kelly Graves. DUCKS BACK IN THE AP POLL Oregon is ranked No. 25 this week in the AP top-25 poll, its first time in the national rankings since Dec. 15, The Ducks are not ranked in the coaches poll. LAST TIME AT THE MODA CENTER The last time the Ducks played a game at the Moda Center the arena was still called the Rose Garden. As part of the old Pape Jam doubleheader, the Ducks met Georgia Tech at the Rose Garden on Dec. 13, 2008, falling to the Yellow Jackets, Micaela Cocks scored a team-high 17 points and the Ducks as a team shot 50 percent from the floor but they turned the ball over 27 times in the loss. The Pape Jam doubleheader used to yearly put a men s and women s basketball doubleheader at Rose Garden. It was discontinued following the season. OREGON S LAST GAME The No. 25 ranked Oregon women s basketball team committed 17 turnovers and fell, 83-67, to Ole Miss on Wednesday night at The Pavilion. The Rebels scored 23 points off the Oregon turnovers while Ole Miss turned the ball over just seven times. Mallory McGwire posted her first career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds Ruthy Hebard, who entered the game 2 GAME NOTES shooting a Pac-12-best 80 percent from the floor, went 10-of-13 against Ole Miss to finish with a team-high 22 points plus eight rebounds Justine Hall, playing in just her second game with Oregon after transferring from Purdue last year, tallied 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting Maite Cazorla added six points and six assists. MANY SEEING MINUTES The Ducks have played every healthy and/or eligible players in all 10 games thus far. It was the fifth triple-double ever for the Ducks. IONESCU S SECOND TRIPLE DOUBLE Sabrina Ionescu tallied her second triple-double of the season and her second in a three-game stretch against Clemson on Dec. 12. The Ducks never trailed after the opening minute, and broke the game open with a 16-0 run that began late in the first quarter and extended into the second. Oregon played tenacious defense, hounding the Spartans into.317 shooting with 24 turnovers. The UO women shot.531 themselves, and finished with 23 assists on their 34 field goals. 3 11/22/16 #24 Michigan St. Eugene PRESEASON POLL The Oregon women s basketball team was picked seventh in the Pac-12 preseason coaches poll, the league announced at its annual media day. The Ducks were also seventh in the preseason media poll. THREE STARTERS BACK FOR The Ducks return three starters off last year s team which advanced to the final four of the WNIT. Junior guard Lexi Bando is back for her third year as a starter, sophomore point guard Maite Cazorla also returns as does senior forward Jacinta Vandenberg. EUROPEAN TOUR RECAP The Ducks had the opportunity to play five games this summer while touring Amsterdam, Barcelona and Madrid. Overall on the trip, senior Mar Shay Moore and freshman Morgan Yaeger tallied a team-high 41 total points. GRAVES 20 WIN SEASONS With a record last year, head coach Kelly Graves has win seasons in 19 years coaching at the Div. I level. Graves has won 20+ in nine of the last 10 years. PLAYERS OF THE YEAR Oregon s roster features four players of the year from the high school ranks. Sabrina Ionescu was the USA Today national player of the year as a senior while Justine Hall (Colorado), Mallory McGwire (Nevada) and Ruthy Hebard (Alaska) all claimed Gatorade state player of the year honors during their prep careers. NATION S NO. 3 RECRUITING CLASS Head coach Kelly Graves and his staff signed the nation s No. 3 ranked recruiting class, according to ESPN. The Ducks signed three five star players and five players ranked in the ESPN 100. The No. 1 class in the nation was Maryland while the No. 2 class was Baylor. Without Alleyne, the Ducks suffered losses at Cal and Stanford to close out the regular season and lost to Arizona in the first round of the Pac-12 tournament, keeping the Ducks out of the NCAA Tournament. Instead of folding, Graves and the Ducks responded with wins over Long Beach State, Fresno State, Utah and UTEP in the WNIT. The run came to an end in the final four of the WNIT with a loss at South Dakota, which went 15-of-21 from threepoint range in the game. NCAA S NO. 1 THREE-POINT SHOOTING TEAM The Ducks shot a blistering 42.1 percent from three last season, the best in the NCAA. That percentage was the second-best in UO history and was just the second time a UO team has shot better than 40 percent from three in a season. BANDO FROM DEEP Returning guard Lexi Bando shot 45.3 percent from three-point range last season, which ranked second in the Pac-12, behind Stanford s Karlie Samuelson, and sixth in the NCAA. Bando led the league as a freshman, shooting 44.0 percent, just ahead of Bonnie Samuelson. POISE BEYOND HER YEARS Despite being a freshman last season, point guard Maite Cazorla led the Pac-12 in assist-to-turnover ratio, total assists and assists per game. Her 206 total assists ranked 12th overall in the NCAA and was the second most in single-season Oregon history. JUST SHY OF PROGRAM WINS RECORD With 24 victories last year, Oregon finished just one win away from matching the program record for wins in a season. The record for wins for the Ducks is 25, set BREAKING DOWN THE RECRUITING CLASS - Making her debut for the Ducks this season is the nation s No. 4 overall recruit, guard Sabrina Ionescu (Miramonte HS/Walnut Creek, Calif.). The highestranked recruit in UO history was the McDonald s All-American game MVP and the USA Today National Player of the Year. - Joining Ionescu is the nation s No. 14 ranked recruit, forward Sierra Campisano. At 6-foot-3, the San Diego, Calif., native averaged a whopping 30 points per game as a senior to go with 15.9 rebounds, 5.7 blocks, 2.7 steals and 2.3 assists. - The Ducks also brought in the No. 40 ranked recruit, forward Ruthy Hebard. Standing 6-foot-4, Hebard was a three-time Gatorade Player of the Year in Alaska. - Australian guard Morgan Yaeger was ranked at No. 92 in the ESPN 100. Yaeger played in the WNBL league as one of the youngest players on the Adelaide Lightning and competed extensively for the Australian youth national teams. - Also ranked in the ESPN 100 was forward Mallory McGwire at No. 98. The daughter of former NFL quarterback Dan McGwire and neice of former MLB slugger Mark McGwire, the 6-foot-5 post from Reno was a two-time Gatorade Player of the Year in Nevada. She was named Northern Region co-player of the Year as a senior after posting 15.4 points, 10.9 rebounds and 3.9 blocks per game. - Arguably the most intriguing player in the recruiting class is 6-foot-6 forward Lydia Giomi. The lanky post runs the floor like a guard and was named 3A first team all-state in Washington after averaging 14.4 points, 10.6 rebounds and two blocks per game as a senior at West Seattle HS. - Oregon s first signee for the 2016 recruiting class was guard Jayde Woods. The 6-foot-1 guard played at Windward HS in Los Angeles where she averaged 12.3 points, six rebounds and six assists per game as a senior. She was a first team all-cif open division. 4 HC KELLY GRAVES HEAD COACH KELLY GRAVES - A PROVEN WINNER Kelly Graves is in his third season at the helm of the Oregon women s basketball program. Graves was named the seventh head coach in program history on April 7, Graves guided the Ducks to a record and an appearance in the semifinals of the WNIT in Oregon s improvement by 8.5 games over the previous year was tied for the 13th most in the NCAA. Oregon s 24 wins was just one shy of the program record of 25, set in both and The Ducks started the season with an 11-0 mark, the second-best start in program history and later in the year won five straight Pac-12 games for the first time since the season. The Ducks led the NCAA in three-point shooting at 42.1 percent and ranked sixth overall at 46.6 percent. Oregon ranked 17th in nation with 551 total assists as a team and 38th in the country in scoring, averaging 72.7 points per game. At the end of the season, star forward Jillian Alleyne, a two-time All-American under Kelly, was selected in the second round of the WNBA draft in 2016, the Ducks first player drafted since Graves went in his first season with the Ducks in , taking a team built to run-and-gun under former head coach Paul Westhead and instilling strong fundamentals and a tough defense-first philosophy. Oregon held their opponents under 70 points 14 times in after allowing an NCAA-worst 89.1 points per game in The new offense also got going as Graves led his Ducks to a win over No. 19 ranked Stanford in the regular season finale, UO s first win against the Cardinal since Alleyne was named a third team All-American and first team all-pac-12 following the season, making the jump from honorable mention in both as a sophomore. Oregon is Graves fourth head coaching position, previously leading the programs at Big Bend Community College ( ), Saint Mary s ( ) and Gonzaga ( ). Graves coaching career started at Big Bend CC in Moses Lake, Wash., where he accepted an assistant coaching position on the men s team, but after the women s coach left, he moved over to lead the women s program instead. In three seasons ( through ) Gaves took a four win team his first season to a record in his final year. Graves left Big Bend CC to become an assistant coach under Jim Sollars at the University of Portland prior to the season. Following four years with the Pilots, Graves was named the head coach at Saint Mary s for the campaign. Graves advanced to his first NCAA Tournament with the Gaels during the season, his second of three seasons at Saint Mary s, and went to seven more over 14 seasons at Gonzaga. Graves left Saint Mary s for Gonzaga for the seasons. His first year with the Bulldogs, his team went 5-23, including 0-14 in WCC play. But by his third year at Gonzaga, the Bulldogs went overall and went to the WNIT the following season. Gonzaga won the first of 10 straight WCC titles under Graves during the campaign when his squad went 28-4 overall and 14-0 in league play. Including that year, Graves and Gonzaga lost just 12 total conference games over his final 10 years leading the program. Gonzaga s first NCAA Tournament appearance came in , when the Bulldogs went and 13-1 in WCC, and after a WNIT bid in , Gonzaga advanced to six straight NCAA Tournaments. Graves and the Zags advanced to the Sweet 16 for three straight years (2010, 2011, 2012) and went to the Elite 8 in Overall, Graves brought eight West Coast Conference Coach of the Year awards and a (.696) Div. I head coaching record to Eugene in 2014, with a record overall before joining the Ducks. Kelly Graves is a great guy and one of the best coaches in America, said UConn head coach Geno Auriemma. Oregon is a place with tremendous women s basketball potential and Kelly is the perfect person to lead the Ducks to the next level. I won t be surprised when Oregon is competing for Pac-12 championships, and contending on a national level, in the near future. Graves added USA Basketball to his resume in the summer of 2012, becoming an assistant coach with the U18 women s basketball squad and helping the team to a gold medal at the 2012 FIBA Americas. He again coached for USA Basketball in the summer of As an assistant with Team USA, he helped the U19 squad with the FIBA World Championship for Women. Another coach on the U19 staff was current Miami head coach, Katie Meier. Kelly is a tremendous teacher of the game, Meier said. His teams are always disciplined, smart, fun to watch and display the same enthusiasm and love for the game that he possesses. He builds winning cultures first, which leads to championship teams. Oregon has made a tremendous hire. Kelly is a talented coach full of integrity and a man who treats his players as family.
