Week AP Coaches Preseason Week Week HEBARD'S HUGE WEEKEND Sophomore Ruthy Hebard went a combined 16-for-20 from the field (80%) for 38 points at No. 19 Texas A&M and No. 5 Louisville. This season, Hebard is shooting 66.7 percent on field goals, good for third in the Pac- 12 and 26th in the NCAA. IONESCU EARNS SIXTH CAREER TRIPLE-DOUBLE In what she called "the ugliest triple-double of my life", Sabrina Ionecu tallied 16 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists as the Ducks won, 83-68, at No. 19 Texas A&M on Nov. 16. Ionescu didn't score at all in the first half and finished the game just 3-of-14 from the field and 1-of-5 from three-pointer range. She did, however, go a career-high 9-of-11 at the free throw line. The guard is now tied with Nicole Powell's (Stanford) Pac-12 career record and one away from the NCAA record (7). IONESCU TALLIES FIFTH TRIPLE-DOUBLE With a career-high 29 points plus 10 rebounds and 11 assists against Drake on Nov. 12, Sabrina Ionescu tallied her fifth career triple-double in just the second game of her sophomore season. THE PAC-12 S YOUNGEST TEAM Despite being picked second in the Pac-12 preseason coaches poll, Oregon is tied with Oregon State with the youngest roster in the conference. Both the Ducks and Beavers each have just four upperclassmen this season. THE PAC-12 S TALLEST TEAM With seven players standing 6-foot-2 or taller, Oregon is the tallest team in the Pac-12 for the season. California, Stanford, Colorado and Utah are just behind with six. PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS Sabrina Ionescu was named a second team preseason All-American by Lindy s while both Ionescu and Ruthy Hebard were named third team preseason All-Americans by Street & Smith. IONESCU NO. 8 ON ESPNW TOP-25 PLAYERS LIST Sabrina Ionescu was ranked No. 8 in ESPNW s preseason list of the top-25 players in the NCAA. Here s what Graham Hays had to say about her - Make no mistake, it s substance more than style that makes Ionescu valuable on a basketball court. Like former Oklahoma star Stacey Dales for a new generation, Ionescu runs a game like a point guard, rebounds like a small forward and, when called upon, scores like a superstar. She does all of it efficiently, posting a two-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio and shooting better than 40 percent from the 3-point line and 80 percent from the free throw line. All substance. But for a program still establishing itself, Ionescu s style and flair - her willingness to find the spotlight - are invaluable. GAME NOTES (Cont.) HEBARD NO. 25 ON ESPNW TOP-25 PLAYERS LIST Ruthy Hebard was ranked No. 25 in ESPNW s preseason list of the top players in the NCAA. Here s what Mechelle Voepel had to say about Hebard - Like fellow sophomore Sabrina Ionescu, Hebard had a great debut season last year for Oregon. The Alaska native hit the game-winning shot against Temple in the NCAA tournament s first round and had a double-double against Duke in the second round, as the Ducks ultimately advanced to the Elite Eight. Coach Kelly Graves said Hebard has gotten physically stronger and benefited from USA Basketball play over the summer. HEBARD TAKES DOWN TEMPLE With the Ducks trailing Temple, 70-69, with only seven seconds left in the game, Mallory McGwire found fellow freshman forward Ruthy Hebard open in the paint and the Fairbanks, Alaska, native hit a jumper to give the Ducks a lead. Hebard sprinted down to the other end of the court and made a trailing block on a Feyonda Fitzgerald layup to secure Oregon s first win in the NCAA Tournament since Hebard finished with a team-high 23 points plus seven rebounds. DUCKS DOWN DUKE IN DURHAM After defeating No. 7 seed Temple in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Oregon upset No. 2 seed Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Ducks opened up a five points lead at halftime and never trailed in the second half en route to the win. Ruthy Hebard shined once again, grabbing a huge doubledouble with 20 points and 15 rebounds on 9-of-14 shooting from the field. Sabrina Ionescu nearly tallied a triple-double with 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Despite getting outrebounded by the Blue Devils (41 to 33), Oregon limited Duke to just 2-of-15 shooting from three-point range (13.3-percent) and forced Duke into 13 turnovers. The win gave Oregon it s first trip to the Sweet 16. HISTORIC WIN VS. MARYLAND The Ducks advanced to the Elite Eight last season after defeating No. 4 ranked and No. 3 seed Maryland, 77-63, in the Sweet 16. FRESHMEN PHENOMS Last year the Ducks were the only team in the NCAA Tournament to start three freshmen - forward Ruthy Hebard, guard Sabrina Ionescu and forward Mallory McGwire. The trio combined to score 59-percent of Oregon s points ( ) in the tournament and grabbed 61-percent of the team s rebounds (79-130). GRAVES GETS IT DONE IN THE DANCE Only three times in the history of the NCAA women s basketball tournament has a double digit seed reached the Elite Eight. Kelly Graves was the coach of two of those teams. Graves and the No. 10 seed Ducks advanced to the Elite Eight a season ago while Graves and No. 11 seed Gonzaga accomplished the same feat in KELLY GRAVES IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT In his third season at UO, Kelly Graves made his first trip to the NCAA Tournament with the Ducks. However, he was hardly a stranger to the tournament. - Nine trips to the NCAA Tournament. - He was a double-digit seed seven times. - Graves is 11-9 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. - Graves has made two trips to the Elite Eight. GAME NOTES (Cont.) - Graves is the only coach in NCAA women s basketball history to take two double-digits seeded teams to the Elight Eight (Oregon in 2017, Gonzaga in 2011) - He has been in the Sweet 16 four times. - He first went to the NCAA Tournament as the head coach of Saint Mary s as a No. 12 seed in Graves then went dancing seven more times at Gonzaga, going as a No. 12 seed three times, No. 11 seed twice, No. 7 seed once and No. 6 seed once. - Graves took Gonzaga to the Sweet 16 in three straight seasons , 2011 and In 2011, Graves and Gonzaga advanced to the Elite Eight. Oregon (2014-pres.) - Guided Oregon to its first ever Sweet 16 and Elite Eight appearances in Oregon s 24 wins in was just one shy of the program record. Year-By-Year Record at Oregon Year Overall Pac Total Graves coached the Ducks to the most successful season in school history in Oregon reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005 but Graves and the Ducks did not settle for just an appearance, instead posting three straight upset wins to reach the program s first Sweet 16 and Elite Eight. Despite being the only team in the 2017 tournament to start three true freshmen, No. 10 seed Oregon knocked off No. 7 seed Temple in the first round, No. 2 seed Duke in the second round and No. 3 seed Maryland in the Sweet 16 before falling to No. 1 seed UConn in the Elite Eight. Graves is the only coach in NCAA Tournament history to take two double-digits seeds to the Elite Eight (Gonzaga in 2011, Oregon in 2017). The Ducks exciting tournament run was fueled by Graves work on the recruiting trail the year prior, as the Ducks signed the No. 3 ranked class in the nation, highlighted by USA Today national high school player of the year, Sabrina Ionescu. The lead guard would go on to be named the ESPNW and USBWA national freshman of the year, in addition to all-pac-12 and Pac-12 freshman of the year. Oregon s offense under Graves was typically efficient in , ranking in the top-30 of the NCAA in field goal percentage (45.0), three-point percentage (39.2) and assists (16.5 apg). Graves guided the Ducks to a record and an appearance in the semifinals of the WNIT in Oregon s 24 wins was just one shy of the program record of 25, set in both and The Ducks started the season with an 11-0 mark, the second-best start in program history and later in the year won five straight Pac-12 games for the first time since the season. The Ducks led the NCAA in three-point shooting at 42.1 percent and ranked sixth overall shooting at 46.6 percent. At the end of the 2016 season, star forward Jillian Alleyne, a two-time All-American under Graves, was selected in the second round of the WNBA draft, the Ducks first player selected since Graves went in his first season with the Ducks in , taking a team built to run-and-gun under former head coach Paul Westhead and instilling strong fundamentals and a tough defense-first philosophy. Oregon held their opponents under 70 points 14 times in after allowing an NCAA-worst 89.1 points per game in The new offense also got going as Graves led his Ducks to a win over No. 19 ranked Stanford in the regular season finale, UO s first win against the Cardinal since Alleyne was named a third team All-American and first team all-pac-12 following the season, making the jump from honorable mention in both as a sophomore. Oregon is Graves fourth head coaching position, previously leading the programs at Big Bend Community College ( ), Saint Mary s ( ) and Gonzaga ( ). Graves coaching career started at Big Bend CC in Moses Lake, Wash., where he accepted an assistant coaching position on the men s team, but after the women s coach left, he moved over to lead the women s program instead. In three seasons ( through ) Gaves took a four win team his first season to a record in his final year. Graves left Big Bend CC to become an assistant coach under Jim Sollars at the University of Portland prior to the season. Following four years with the Pilots, Graves was named the head coach at Saint Mary s for the campaign. Graves advanced to his first NCAA Tournament with the Gaels during the season, his second of three seasons at Saint Mary s, and went to seven more over 14 seasons at Gonzaga. Graves left Saint Mary s for Gonzaga for the seasons. His first year with the Bulldogs, his team went 5-23, including 0-14 in WCC play. I head coaching record to Eugene in 2014, with a record overall before joining the Ducks. Kelly Graves is a great guy and one of the best coaches in America, said UConn head coach Geno Auriemma. Oregon is a place with tremendous women s basketball potential and Kelly is the perfect person to lead the Ducks to the next level. Graves added USA Basketball to his resume in the summer of 2012, becoming an assistant coach with the U18 women s basketball squad and helping the team to a gold medal at the 2012 FIBA Americas. He again coached for USA Basketball in the summer of As an assistant, he helped the USA U19 squad win the FIBA Women s World Championship. Graves and his wife Mary have three sons - Max (1995) Jackson (1997) and Will (2000). Max graduated from UO in GoDucks.com Facebook.com/OregonWBB 5
