2 THE GREEN BAY TRADITION STORIED SUCCESS Green Bay s streak of 30 straight winning seasons is third only to perennial powerhouses Tennessee (34) and Louisiana Tech (33). HISTORY Green Bay women s basketball is entering its 34th season of collegiate competition. During that time, the Phoenix has compiled an all-time record of , a winning percentage of.700 percent. The team has also appeared in a total of 20 postseason tournaments, including 12 in the past 16 years. Green Bay fielded its first intercollegiate women s basketball team in the winter of The Phoenix lost its first game, a overtime setback to Ripon College. That team finished with a 3-9 record, but a foundation was set for future Phoenix success. Over the next three seasons Green Bay struggled, but during the campaign, then-head coach Carol Hammerle had the luxury of offering partial scholarships to her players. It was in that season the Phoenix began its current string of 30 consecutive winning seasons. Over a five-year span in the late 70s and early 80s, the Phoenix dominated the WWIAC, posting five straight conference titles and appearing in the 1982 AIAW Division II national quarterfinals. One year later, Pam Roecker became Green Bay s first academic All-American for women s basketball. Green Bay s dominance at the NAIA level peaked in the season. The team went 24-6 and posted a third-place finish at the NAIA national tournament. Along the way, the Phoenix defeated 10 of 14 NCAA Division I opponents, as the team had dual affiliation. The Phoenix broke free from its NAIA ties during the season and proceeded to tally a 22-6 record, the best in the NCAA among independent schools. The next season, Green Bay joined the North Star Conference and placed third in the eight-team league. The season was another banner year for Green Bay. The team defeated nationally ranked Georgia at the Phoenix Sports Center, went 12-0 in North Star play and finished as the WNIT consolation champions. Over the next five seasons, the Phoenix continued to show its might at the Division I level, making its first appearance in the NCAA tournament during the 1994 season. After moving to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in , Green Bay quickly established itself as one of the premiere teams in the conference. In 1996, the team appeared in the conference tournament title game for the first time starting a nine-year string of title game appearances. In Hammerle s final season with Green Bay, the team defeated Butler on the Bulldogs home floor to take the 1998 MCC championship and advance to the NCAA tournament. Under the watch of first-year head coach Kevin Borseth, the Phoenix returned to the NCAA tournament in 1999 on the shoulders of a 15- game winning streak. On ESPN, the 14th-seeded Phoenix just missed an upset, falling to UCLA in the first round at Pauley Pavilion.
