1 2006 Men s Soccer 2006 Season Recap , MPSF Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Champions NCAA 2nd Round Contact: Jay Blackman W: (505) F: (505) blackman@unm.edu website: After losing nine seniors and seven starters from a 2005 squad that advanced to the finals of the NCAA College Cup, University of men s soccer coach Jeremy Fishbein would not be at fault for calling 2006 a rebuilding year. However, rebuilding was a word that never crossed the minds of any member of the Lobo men s soccer team. A fact that can be easily judged by the accomplishments of this year s squad. For the third year in a row and the fifth time in the last six seasons, the Lobos won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament while putting up a record on the year. In fact, s league mark was better than the record it posted in MPSF action in 2005, when it advanced to the finals of the NCAA College Cup. With six underclassmen in the starting lineup to begin the season, struggled out of the gate to a record in the first six games. However, the Lobos showed their potential on Sept. 15 when they tied No. 1 SMU 1-1 at the UNM Soccer Complex. From that point on, UNM went to finish the regular season. The only set back in that stretch was a 1-0 loss at Denver in the MPSF opener on Sept. 29. UNM avenged that loss with a 3-0 pounding of the 21st-ranked Pioneers at home on Nov. 2 to clinch the MPSF crown. Despite holding a No. 8 ranking at the end of the regular season, the Lobos did not receive a first round bye and were sent on the road for the first round of the NCAA Tournament. scored a 1-0 win at San Francisco on a last-minute goal by freshman Stephen Brown. That setup a second round match at 13th-seeded Cal that the Bears won 3-1, ending another strong season by the Lobos. dominated the MPSF honors, putting 11 players on the three All-MPSF teams. Senior Andrew Boyens was named the MPSF Player of the Year for the second time in his career, while head coach Jeremy Fishbien was named the co-coach of the Year for the third time in five years. Juniors David Gualdarama and Mike Graczyk, sophomore Brandon Barklage and freshman Simon Ejdemyr were all named to the MPSF first team. Sophomores Mike Porter and Chris Wright and freshman Zach Tierney were both named to the second team while junior Joey Vitagliano, sophomore Jack Smithson and freshman Stephen Brown earned spots on the third team. Boyens was one of the most dominate players in college soccer in 2006, earning consensus All-American honors for the second season year in a row. The 6-4 defender from Dunedin, New Zealand, was also one of 15 semifinalists for the 2006 Hermann Trophy, the top individual honor in college soccer. He leaves UNM as the only two-time conference player of the year and one of two players to earn All-American honors twice. He was selected with the 10th overall pick by Toronto FC in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft. Ejdemyr, another talented defender, became the Lobos third freshman All-American when he earned a spot on CollegeSoccerNews.com s first team. Wright, the leading scorer in the MPSF also gained recognition for his hard work in the classroom, earning ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic All-American honors. The Lobos will only loose two players for the 2007 season, Boyens along with fellow senior Lars Loeseth. Returning 10 starters next year will make one of the strongest and most experienced teams in the country. UNM will also have the services of two NSCAA High School All- Americans - Michael Reed and Gardner Morrow - who redshirted this season. Fishbein has shown that he has built a program that can maintain excellence from year to year and the future looks very bright for Lobo Soccer Schedule/Results Overall (14-4-3) MPSF (8-1-1) 8-18 at No. 1 # Fort Lewis (Ex.) NO RESPECT IN LOBO LAND: Despite being ranked in the top-10 and coming off an appearance in the NCAA College Cup finals in 2005, the MPSF Champion Lobos did not earn a seed, nor a first round home game, in the 2006 NCAA Tournament. The Lobos were the highest ranking unseeded team in the Soccer America Top-25, Soccer Times Top-25 and CollegeSoccerNews.com Top-30. Even though UNM was the No. 2 seed last season, an honor they carried all the way to the national title game, the Lobos have had a rough road in some of its previous trips to the NCAA Tournament. In 2002, finished the regular season with a record, but were sent packing for a first round match at Bradley which they won 2-1. In 2004, UNM was the No. 1 team in the nation with a mark, but were given an inexplicable 13th seed in the NCAA Tournament. They fell at Virginia on penalty kicks in the Sweet 16 that season. LOBOS IN THE SECOND ROUND: UNM advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in the last six seasons with a 1-0 win at San Francisco. The Lobos lost the second round match at Cal by a 3-1 total. has only one win in the second round in its previous four games. fell to No. 1 SMU 2-0 in 2001, dropped a 1-0 match at Saint Louis in 2002, defeated Portland 4-1 at home in 2004 and tied Wisconsin-Milwaukee 2-2 at home last season. The Lobos did advance past UWM on penalty kicks 5-3 in BOYENS RACKS UP HONORS AS A SENIOR: Lobo senior Andrew Boyens ended his Lobo career as one of the most decorated players in UNM soccer history. The 6-4, defender from Dunedin, New Zealand, was one of 15 players named as a 2006 MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist. The Hermann trophy is the top honor for Division I college soccer. Boyens is just the second Lobo to be nominated for the Hermann. Jeff Rowland was a finalist in Boyens was also named 1st Team All-American by CollegeSoccerNews.com and Soccer America magazine. The 2006 MPSF co- Player of the Year is also the only two-time conference player of the year in school history after sharing the honor with Rowland in BOYENS AT THE MLS DRAFT: Senior Andrew Boyens became the highest drafted Lobo in school history when he was selected in the first round with the 10th overall pick by Toronto FC in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft. He joins Lance Watson (2005), Brandon Moss (2005) and Josh Brown (2005) as Lobos who have been taken in the MLS SuperDraft in the Fishbein era. SHARING THE WEALTH: After having one of the most prolific scorers in the nation the last two years in 2005 Hermann Trophy Finalist Jeff Rowland, the Lobos turned to a scoring-by-committee squad in Of the 17 active players, 15 had at least two points on the year and 13 had at least one goal.
