1 M E M O R A N D U M May 7, 2014 TO: FROM: Members of the Board of Trustees Tremayne Price, Trustee SUBJECT: Recognition of National and International Athletic Achievements Action Requested The proposed resolution seeks formal recognition by the SUNY Board of Trustees of the national and international athletic achievements of SUNY students, alumni, teams and coaches during the winter and spring (to date) of Resolution I recommend that the Board of Trustees adopt the following resolution: Whereas each spring Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher recognizes scholar athletes across SUNY who have excelled in both their chosen sports and also in SUNY classrooms, with an average GPA of 3.61 among them; and Whereas a subset of these students and their peers go on to achieve at the national and international level in athletics; and Whereas the general commitment, drive, and skill necessary to advance to national or international athletic competition as a student athlete is laudable; and Whereas such accomplishments are a source of great pride for the individuals involved, their campus, campus communities and SUNY at large; and

2 Board Resolution -2- May 7, 2014 Background Whereas throughout individuals and teams across SUNY have excelled not only in national championships in their respective sports but also on the international stage in the 2014 Sochi Olympic games; and Whereas SUNY Student Assembly President and member of the SUNY Board of Trustees Tremayne Price has sought Trustee level recognition for these individuals; now, therefore, be it Resolved that the Board of Trustees offers its sincere congratulations to all SUNY students, alumni, teams and coaches who, during the winter and spring (to date) of , advanced to national and international levels of competition as outlined in the attached summary which is also on file in the Office of the Secretary; and be it further Resolved that the Board of Trustees offers its best wishes for continued academic and athletic success to all SUNY athletes and athletic teams honored as well as their peers, who can be inspired by the accomplishments noted herein; and be it further Resolved that this resolution will be duly recorded and shared with all SUNY campuses as an expression of the Board of Trustees public recognition of the significance of advancement to national and international levels of competition. The request for this resolution originated from SUNY Student Assembly President and SUNY Trustee Tremayne Price. The SUNY Trustees have on occasion previously recognized individual teams for advancing to national championships. The intent of this resolution is to acknowledge the system-wide accomplishments of a broader range of students, alumni, teams and coaches who have advanced to national and international competition. Although every effort was made to capture all individuals and teams, given the breadth and depth of athletic competition, it is possible that there may be individuals or teams not identified in this listing. Further, the spring 2014 season continues and there will likely be additional achievements of note in the coming months. Attachment
