In 2015, McNeese s first played game of the year was a league game at home against Incarnate Word after the scheduled season opener at LSU was canceled due to the weather. Hurricane turned Tropical Storm Harvey has affected the Cowboys practice schedule the past few days. McNeese traveled down I-10 to Lafayette on Monday and Tuesday to practice at ULL s indoor facility after the Ragin Cajuns were gracious with their offer. This is the third time in the last six years weather has affected McNeese s season opening game. In 2012, Hurricane Isaac forced McNeese to fly out to Middle Tennessee a day early to avoid the hurricane that ended up making landfall in SE Louisiana. In 2015, the Cowboys season opener at LSU was canceled due to continuous thunderstorms that put the game in a four-hour delay after each team ran an offensive series. And now with Hurricane/TS Harvey forcing McNeese to alter it s practice schedule. The Cowboys have compiled an overall Southland Conference record of in now their 46th season in the league. 2 TEAM NOTES james tabary enters junior year after stellar first season Cowboys quarterback James Tabary enters his second season already as one of the most productive QBs in school history. Named to the 2017 CFPA National Performer of the Year Watch List. Named the SLC and Louisiana Newcomer of the Year in 2016, Tabary, who transfered from Arkansas State last summer, set school single-season records with 249 completions and 415 attempts and four games with passing for 300 or more yards; and tied a record with tossing 5 TD passes against No. 1 Sam Houston State. His 3,036 passing yards ranked as the second most in a season (33 shy of the record) while he threw for the second-most in a game (384), third (376), 7th (357) and 8th (348) most in a game. austin nelson returns after life altering surgery McNeese junior tight end Austin Nelson feels lucky to be stepping on the football field this season, and for good reason. The two-sport star (baseball designated hitter) found out last August 12, his 20th birthday, that he had been diagnosed with a rare case of Optic Nerve Schwannoma, a non-cancerous tumor that had been affecting his sight. Surgery to remove the tumor happened in January, and after some extensive physical therapy, the Sulphur, La. native stepped back onto the baseball field in April at Abilene Christian, and in his start back, in his first at-bat, he ripped a single. The movie script come to life continued in his next at-bat when he hit a solo home run. He went on to become a key factor in McNeese winning its first conference championship in 11 years. Now he s back on the football field and is in better shape than ever. band of brothers McNeese has four sets of brothers on this year s roster - Ryan and Lawayne Ross, Parker and Cody Orgeron, Calum and Gabe Foster, and Gunner and Baily Raborn. prime targets for tabary Last year, wide outs Darious Crawley and Kent Shelby became the first duo to catch 40 or more passes in the same season in school history - Crawley with 41 catches and Shelby 40. The two return for their senior season and will be joined by Kylon Highshaw (31-421) and 2016 part-time starter Parker Orgeron (29-373) giving Tabary his top four targets in 2016 returning for the 2017 season. ryan ross cleared for workouts after spring injury Senior running back Ryan Ross was dealt a blow during the spring game in April when he went down with a broken ankle. After surgery to repair the injury and a very aggressive rehabilitation period, Ross was cleared last week to resume workouts. Ross will be evaluated in 3-4 weeks to see if he s full strength. Since he played as a true freshman, he still has a redshirt year should he need it. jimmy converse on piesman watch list Junior offensive lineman Jimmy Converse is one of 44 Division I offensive and defensive linemen who have been named to the 2017 Piesman Watch List by SB Nation. Now in its third year, the Piesman Trophy is awarded to the offensive or defensive lineman that makes the most impressive play as a runner, receiver, or passer. gross-whitaker, livings tough bookends on defense Senior DL Jammerio Gross-Whitaker and junior lineman Chris Livings are arguably two of the top defensive ends in the Southland Conference this season. Gross- Whitaker led the Cowboys last season with 59 total tackles while Livings ranked fifth with 47 stops. The duo combined to record 15 1/2 sacks - Livings with 8 and Gross-Whitaker and also 27 total tackles for a loss (Livings 14, Gross-Whitaker 13). preseason all-conference cowboys A total of eight Cowboys were named to the preseason all-southland Conference teams. Earning first team honors are converted TE Lawayne Ross and FS Andre Fuller. Second team honors went to DL Jammerio Gross-Whitaker and DL Chris Livings; S Dominique Hill; WRs Darious Crawley and Kent Shelby; and OL Andy Dodd. secondary strengthened by transfer bj blunt McNeese will field one of its deepest group of defensive backs in years and helping witht he cause is junior transfer BJ Blunt who is expected to start at weak safety on Thursday night. Blunt comes to McNeese from Garden City Community College where he helped his team win the NJCCA National Championship last year with an 11-0 record as he led the team with eight pass interceptions. The New Orleans native originally signed with McNeese in 2014 out of Mc- Donough #35 but after going through a year of classes and not meeting eligibility requirements, Blunt left school and the sport of football for the 2015 year. He returned to the gridiron in 2016 at GCCC, and completed his circle this August when he rejoined the Cowboys. ben norton returns to coach o-line Ben Norton made his return to Cowboy Country in March after spending the last four years at rival Northwestern State with the past three as the team s offensive coordinator. Norton is coaching the offensive line as well has coordinating the running game. He s also the team s recruiting coordinator. The SFA graduate coached at McNeese in 2005 and 2006 and was co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in 06 as the Cowboys won the conference championship with a 5-1 league record. lsu transfer ol andy dodd steps in at center After receiving his degree from LSU while backing up All-America center Ethan Pocic, center Andy Dodd transfered to McNeese during the summer and will step in a starting role for the Cowboys. The Georgia native played in 14 career games for LSU while making one start in four seasons with the Tigers, his first being a redshirt year. five players have already earned degrees Five McNeese football players have already earned their bachelor s degree. Those players are DL Jammerio Gross-Whitaker, DL Antonio McGhee, DL Jalen Bowers, OL Andy Dodd, and QB Joe Lissard. 2

3 senior-laden squad McNeese s 2017 roster features 24 seniors, the most in quite some time. Of those 24, 11 are listed as starters for Thursday night (WRs Kent Shelby and Tavarious Battiste; C Andy Dodd; NT Antonio McGhee; DT Kurt Viges; DE Jammerio Gross-Whitaker; LBs Ashari Goins and Christian Jacobs; CB Jermaine Antoine; FS Andre Fuller). Another 8 are backups (QB Joe Lissard; WRs Nick Edwards and Darious Crawley; OL Chris Aye and Joe Jenkins; NT Jalan Bowlers; S Josh Washington; WS Damion Morgan; and FS Erik Jones). where there s seniority there s also youth There may be an abundance of seniors on the Cowboys depth chart but there are also a handful of freshmen and sophomores as well - a total of 16 to be exact. Redshirt freshman CB Darion Dunn jumped into the top spot late last week and is expected to be the only freshman to start while five sopohomores, all on offense, are tops at their position for Thursday night (RB Justin Pratt, WR Parker Orgeron, TE Lawayne Ross, and OL Grant Burguillos and Tyrae Johnson). season and conference openers Only twice before has McNeese opened the season with a Southland Conference game and the Cowboys went 1-1 in those two. 10 HEAD COACH Lance Guidry 10 McNeese, nd Year as Head Coach; 11th Year at McNeese; 7-6 overall (1-1 as Interim Head Coach at Miami, Ohio and WKU) Lance Guidry was a star on the field for the McNeese Cowboys in the early 90s; became a star on the sideline as a defensive coordinator in the 1990s and the 2000s; and last year, was the star candidate to become McNeese s 15th head coach in school history. He wore No. 15 as an All-Southland Conference defensive back, helping the Cowboys to two conference championships, and the program s first-ever playoff appearance and victory (1991 and 1993). Now in his second season at the helm, he s reassuming the controls of a defensive unit that has been one of the most dominant in the league since his playing days the Defense With Attitude as he looks to build on McNeese s leaguerecord number of conference titles to capture the number he wore from No. 15. Guidry and the Cowboys went through some growing pains in 2016 as the team featured a new quarterback, young running back and offensive line groups, and some young defensive backs. The Cowboys also dealt with some injuries to some key players but still managed to post a 6-5 record for their 12th consecutive winning season the fourth longest streak of all current FCS teams. Three of McNeese s five losses where by a score or less while the other two were to the No. 1 team in the country (56-43 at SHSU) and 35-0 vs. No. 22 Central Arkansas. That UCA game was an emotional one for the Cowboys, and especially for Coach Guidry, when on the morning of the contest, he found out his brother had tragically and unexpectedly passed away. Guidry did not take the sideline for that game and his absence was felt. One week later, the Cowboys rolled over Northwestern State, 48-27, and went on to win three of their final four games by an average score of Offensively, the Cowboys posted one of their greatest seasons in school history, led by transfer quarterback James Tabary who threw for 3,036 yards, the second-most in a season in school history, and 23 touchdowns. The New Orleans native who came to McNeese via Arkansas State, set records for most completions (249) and attempts (415) in a season; most games with 25 or more completions (6); and tied records for most games throwing for 300 yards or more (4) and touchdown passes in a game (5). Defensively, McNeese ranked second in the league in total, rushing and scoring defense, but the 285 points allowed were the most given up in three years while the unit ranked near the bottom of the league in red-zone defense by allowing 28 scores in 30 tries. In 2015, Guidry, as the team s defensive coordinator, helped McNeese win its 14th Southland Conference championship, a league record, while the team posted a perfect regular season. His defense ranked 12th nationally in total defense (allowing a tad over 300 yards per game), third in both scoring defense and red zone defense, and fourth in rushing defense. In addition, the Cowboys defense ranked second in 4th-down conversion defense sixth in first downs defense, and seventh in 3rddown conversion defense. There are seven keys to our program that we will install that will pertain to players, coaches and support staff, said Guidry. Number one is enthusiasm. That is the No. 1 thing to me. When you come to work, you must come with a positive attitude. Happy people are usually successful. Compete. We will compete on and off the field. Toughness. We will never quit and will have great pride. Number four is preparation. You have to know what to expect, and when adversity hits, you will know how to respond. Accountability. We will always be prompt and dependable. We will set goals for every task, and every task will be met. The last thing to me is team unity. We are a family here at McNeese. It will always be family here. McNeese represents Guidry s first full-time head coaching job at the collegiate level. He acted as interim head coach at Miami University (Ohio) in 2010 and Western Kentucky University in 2012, leading both teams into postseason bowl games. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at McNeese in 1994 then returned as the school s defensive coordinator from , and in 2008, coached the defensive backs. In his now 11 combined years on the McNeese staff, the Cowboys have compiled a record, including a Lance Guidry presented a No. 15 jersey from AD Bruce Hemphill with McNeese president Dr. Philip Williams.

11 55-20 mark in Southland Conference games. During that time, McNeese has won four conference championships ( , 2015), made six FCS playoff appearances (1994, , 2013, 2015) and played in the 2002 FCS National Championship game. Before returning to McNeese prior to the 2013 season, Guidry served as defensive coordinator at Western Kentucky in 2011 and 2012 and was named interim head coach on Dec. 8 of 2012 to lead WKU against Central Michigan in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl in Detroit, Mich., on Dec. 26, a game the Hilltoppers dropped He coached three players while at WKU - DE Quanterous Smith, LB Andrew Jackson and S Jonathan Dowling - that went on to be selected in the NFL Draft. Guidry joined the Miami staff after serving as the defensive secondary coach at McNeese in 2008 and led the Redhawks to a victory over Middle Tennessee as the interim head coach in the 2011 GoDaddy.com Bowl, helping Miami finish off a 10-4 season after going 1-11 the previous year. Miami became the first FBS school to go from double-digit losses to double-digit wins in consecutive seasons. Guidry helped orchestrate a similar turnaround in 2011, helping WKU to back-to-back winning seasons in 2011 and 2012, including the program s first-ever bowl bid since joining the FBS. His 2012 Hilltopper defense was a force nationally, ranking in the top 40 in seven different national defensive categories. The Guidry-led defense ranked 23rd nationally in total defense (344.42) and 12th in the nation in tackles for loss per game (7.42). His squad also ranked at the top of four defensive categories in the Sun Belt Conference, including total defense, pass defense efficiency (128.4), sacks (31) and first down defense (19.3), while ranking second in rushing defense (136.6), scoring defense (25.6), passing defense (206.2) and interceptions (13). A veteran coach in Louisiana football s high school ranks, Guidry served as secondary coach at Leesville High School in 1995 and 1996, helping lead the Wampus Cats to the state championship game in He also coached defensive backs at Carencro (La.) High School for three seasons ( ), then returned years later to serve as the Golden Bears head coach ( ). In between his stints at Carencro, Guidry served as defensive coordinator and coached the secondary at McNeese ( ). The Cowboys reached the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs in four consecutive seasons ( ), won three straight Southland Conference championships (2001, 2002, 2003) during that stretch and lost to WKU in the 2002 FCS National Championship Game. During those years, he helped produce such all-americans as Joe Judge, Keith Smith and Hadley Prince. Guidry was also a team captain, four-year letterman ( ) and all-conference defensive back at McNeese and was a part of two conference championship teams (1991, 1993). He and his wife, Starlet, have four children: Janzen, Madison, Alexis and Kaitlyn, and two grandchildren, Ethan and Kash.
