The Owls had previously won six straight against the Green Wave.» Four players scored in double figures in the Tulane loss, led by junior Shizz Alston, Jr. and sophomore Quinton Rose who posted 17 points apiece. LAST MEETING: HOUSTON 79, TEMPLE 66 (JAN. 28, 2017)» 's Rob Gray and Damyean Dotson combined for 48 points to lead the Cougars to a win over Temple in a late game at Hofheinz Arena.» The game was often closer than the final score would indicate, but Temple trailed for all of the second half and much of the first.» Daniel Dingle scored the Owls' 10th three-pointer of the game with 1:51 remaining to make it a seven-point game, 73-66, but went 6-of-6 at the free throw line to close out the victory.» Dingle finished with 15 points, while Obi Enechionyia led Temple with 16 points and seven rebounds. Also scoring in double figures was Quinton Rose who came off the bench for 11 points, three assists and two steals.» Gray hit 9-of-9 free throws and 3-of-4 three-pointers on his way to a game-high 28 points, while Dotson registered a double-double for with 20 points and 10 rebounds.» Both teams were slow to get going offensively in the first half, but it would not be evident by halftime as the Cougars shot 50 percent from the field with the Owls not too far behind at 42 percent.» The pace began to pick up with a 10-0 run that gave the Cougars a 16-9 lead just past the 12-minute mark. Rose ended the drought for Temple with a jumper that began a 7-0 run, tying the game at at the midway point of the half.» jumped back ahead and then held a two- to three-possession lead the rest of the way. Shizz Alston, Jr. hit a long range shot that pulled Temple within five, with 3:14 remaining, but closed on a 7-2 run for a 10-point, lead at the break.» looked to be in command of the game after an 8-2 opening run in the second half gave the Cougars a 16-point, advantage, but the Owls refused to go away.» An 8-0 Temple run turned into a 17-4 run thanks to five points apiece from Alani Moore II and Enechionyia. Just six and a half minutes after being down by 16, the Owls made it a three-point game, on a Moore layup with 11:16 remaining.» Unable to get the tying bucket, the Owls instead suffered a scoring drought over three minutes long as got its lead back to double digits. Temple made another push and was able to come within six on two occasions down the final stretch, but could get no closer.» Foul trouble was costly for Temple for much of the game, as three players finished with four fouls and two others finished with three. TEMPLE MEN'S BASKETBALL Strength of Schedule Noted for its non-conference schedule strength since the days of Hall of Fame head coach John Chaney, the Temple Owls continue the tradition with their strength of schedule rated second nationally by CBSSports.com. When asked during his tenure about scheduling tough opponents, current head coach Fran Dunphy explains "John Chaney makes our schedule." Starting Consistency Temple has started the same five players - Josh Brown, Shizz Alston, Jr., Quinton Rose, Obi Enechionyia and Ernest Aflakpui - all season. Year-Long Free Throw Streak Junior guard Shizz Alston, Jr. set a program record with 52 consecutive free throws made from Dec. 28, 2016 to Dec. 6, The previous record of 49 in a row was set by Hall of Famer Lynn Greer from March 8-25, When Alston hit 6-of-6 free throws in the Owls' win vs. Wisconsin on Dec. 6, he surpassed Greer's mark. Alston missed his first of two free throw attempts vs. Saint Joseph's on Dec. 9, but did lead all players with 20 points in the game. He leads all players in the American Athletic Conference with a free-throw percentage of.935 (29-of-31), and ranks in a tie for 11th in NCAA Division I. Top 25 Program Temple men's basketball has cracked the Top 25 where it matters most: the NCAA RPI. The Owls are currently ranked 23rd in the NCAA RPI (through games of 12/28) and are the second-best American Athletic Conference team, one spot behindn (10-2) at No. 22. Temple vs. the Polls Temple has defeated a Top 25 opponent for 10 straight seasons. The Owls have a total of 66 wins against ranked foes, including taking down Top 25 opponents No. 25/RV Florida and No. 19/17 West Virginia on consecutive days (Nov ) for the first time in school history to win the 2016 NIT Season Tip-Off in Brooklyn. When Temple defeated #3/3 Syracuse on Dec. 12, 2012 (83-79), it marked the fifth straight season in which the unranked Owls had taken down a Top 10 opponent. That feat did not occur during the season, but Temple has achieved it in six of the last nine seasons with a defeat of #10/10 Kansas on Dec. 22, 2014 at the Wells Fargo Center Gildan Charleston Classic Champions For the first time in three appearances at the tournament, Temple won the 2017 Gildan Charleston Classic and now stands at 7-2 overall (2-1 in and ; 3-0 in ). The championship game vs. Clemson was a rematch of the 2008 title game, but this time it was the Owls who bested the Tigers, winning The regular season tournament win was the second straight for Temple, which won the 2016 NIT Season Tip-Off in dramatic fashion a year ago. The Owls toppled back-to-back Top 25 opponents for that championship, rallying to defeat No. 25/RV Florida State on Thanksgiving Day before winning against No. 19/17 West Virginia a day later. Last year's regular season tournament title was the first for Temple since when the Owls went 2-0 at Madison Square Garden against Georgetown and Wake Forest to win the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. All-time, Temple is now in regular season tournament games.

This ties for the most non-conference regular season wins against Power 5 schools. It has been done four previous times in school history with the last coming during the NCAA Elite Eight season. That team defeated Wake Forest, Mississippi, Michigan State and Florida State. Enechionyia, Rose Honored at Gildan Charleston Classic Senior forward Obi Enechionyia was named the 2017 Gildan Charleston Classic MVP, while sophomore guard Quinton Rose notched the first double-double of his career against Clemson and also earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Temple Men s Basketball Tip Set for 9 PM Temple s men s basketball game against #21/22 at the Liacouras Center on January 4 has been selected for ESPN2 and will tip-off at 9:00 p.m. The game was one of two remaining on the Owls schedule that did not have a set time. Temple s final regular season home game on February 25 against has yet to be determined. It will be at either 2 or 4 p.m. with the network being ESPN or ESPNU. Ring of Honor to Add Four Men's Basketball Greats in Temple honored two of its all-time greats at halftime of the Saint Joseph's game, and will honor two more against Memphis on Jan. 13. The first two to join the Temple Basketball Ring of Honor in were Nate Blackwell ( ) and Angelo Musi ( ). A third team All-American as a senior ( ), Blackwell scored 1,708 points (9th on all-time list), dished 533 assists (4th all-time), and ranks fourth on the school's career free throw percentage list (.828). His senior year's free throw percentage of 90.4 percent is the single-season school record. A two-time All-District and All-Big 5, Blackwell was named the 1987 Big 5 MVP and Atlantic 10 Player of the Year. The 1985 A-10 Championship MVP, he has been a part of six Temple regular season titles and four A-10 Championships as a player and assistant coach. The Big 5 Hall of Famer was selected in the second round pick of the 1987 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs. An honorable mention All-American and All-East selection as a senior in , Musi was a two-sport athlete at Temple, captaining both the men's basketball and baseball teams. A three-time all-city selection, the 5-9 guard would go on to serve as the captain of the Philadelphia Warriors team that won the 1947 Basketball Association of America Championship (pre-dates the NBA). Men s Basketball Announces Signing of Arshama Parks Arashma Parks, a 6-8, 230-pound forward, has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Temple, announced the Owls' head men's basketball coach Fran Dunphy on Nov. 10. Parks, a native of North Royalton, Ohio, is in his first season at the Phelps School in Malvern, Pa. where he is averaging 12 points, eight rebounds and two blocks per game. "We are happy to welcome Arashma to the Temple basketball family," said Dunphy. "He is a tremendous young man from a great family who will be a good fit for our program." The younger brother of Villanova redshirt freshman center Omari Spellman, Parks transferred to the Phelps School from Springfield (Mass.) Commonwealth Academy, where he prepped from Dunphy Names Captains for the Season Men s basketball head coach Fran Dunphy announced that redshirt senior guard Josh Brown and senior forward Obi Enechionyia were named the captains for the season. Brown, who missed most of last season due to an Achilles injury, served as a co-captain of the Owls along with Daniel Dingle and Mark Williams. The 6-3 point guard, who has played in 106 games, was ranked 10th in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.5) while leading the Owls and ranking second in the conference in assists per game (4.9 apg). It is the latest since the Owls fell to second round opponent Auburn at the Liacouras Center on Nov. 19, Long Range Leaders With 9.0 three-pointers made per game, Temple led all teams in the league in and set a new school record. Fran Dunphy Honored With ACS National Circle of Honor Award Temple head coach Fran Dunphy and Saint Joseph's men's basketball coach Phil Martelli were presented with the 2017 Circle of Honor Award by the American Cancer Society on June 11, 2017 at the 18th Annual Circle of Honor Dinner at Merion Golf Club. This prestigious national honor within the Coaches vs. Cancer program recognizes college coaches for their extraordinary commitment to the American Cancer Society's mission of saving lives against cancer through fundraising and cancer education. Dunphy has been an active member of Coaches vs. Cancer since He is currently the Coaches vs. Cancer of Philadelphia co-chair, which enables him to lead events including the annual gala, tip-off, pre-season luncheon and school initiative, and has raised over $14 million to the fight against cancer. Macon, who is arguably one of the greatest players in school history, accomplished this trifecta in Mascot Double Trouble: Hooter and Stella Temple Athletics has both a traditional and a live mascot cheering on its teams, as Hooter the Owl and Stella can both often be found on the sidelines. To honor Temple s beginning as a night school for ambitious young people, the nocturnal owl was adopted as its mascot. The owl represents wisdom and knowledge and is known for being perceptive, resourceful and courageous. Hooter the Owl is a part of Temple s Spirit Squad, making appearances games, alumni events and more. Each February, mascots from all over the city of Philadelphia come to Temple to celebrate Hooter's birthday at a home basketball game, which will take place this season on Sunday, Feb. 18 against. Stella, a great horned owl, began her career as Temple s live mascot in Though she s small just 2 feet tall and only 3 pounds Stella is a mighty predator, with an impressive 60-inch wingspan and talons capable of crushing prey with 28 pounds of force per square inch. She currently resides in the Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown, Pa., where she also is a wildlife conservation teacher. Stella originally hails from Washington state. Her favorite foods include rodents, rabbits and snakes. For Three Temple has made at least one three-pointer in 716 consecutive games. The last time the Owls did not make a three-pointer in a game was February 1, Temple missed all 16 three-point attempts that day in dropping a decision to #1 UMass at McGonigle Hall. Lynn Greer Had a Hall of Fame Year Temple men's basketball great Lynn Greer ( ) was inducted into the Temple Athletics Hall of Fame in September, 2016, and was inducted into the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame in April, Greer ended his career as the program's second all-time leading scorer with 2,099 points. The 6-1 guard turned in one of the best offensive season ever in Temple men's basketball history as a senior in That year he averaged 23.2 points, scoring 719 points (3rd on the TU single-season list), while earning first team all-conference, all-district and Philadelphia Big 5 Most Valuable Player honors. The Philadelphia native (Engineering and Science HS) also set still-standing school records for single-season three-point accuracy (.472) and career free throw percentage (.852). Temple's all-time leader in games played (137), Greer was a member of four NCAA teams, including two Elite Eight trips (1999, 2001), and one NIT Final Four (2002) in his career. Upon graduation, he played one season in the NBA and went on to a 12-year professional career overseas. Quinton Rose a Finalist for USA Men's U19 World Cup Team Following four training sessions that featured 27 of the nation's top 19-and-under male basketball players June at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., Temple forward Quinton Rose, named to The American's All-Rookie Team in , was among 18 finalists for the 2017 USA Basketball Men's U19 World Cup Team. Included among the 18 finalists were seven gold medalists from the summer of 2016, and a total of nine athletes that boasted USA Basketball experience. While not ultimately selected for the team, Rose was selected to the final 18 out of an initial poll of 28 athletes.

8 TEMPLE HEAD COACH FRAN DUNPHY 12TH SEASON LA SALLE OVERALL AT TEMPLE One of 25 active NCAA Division I coaches with 500 victories, Fran Dunphy is in his 12th season at the helm of the Temple men's basketball program in The all-time winningest coach in Philadelphia Big 5 history, Dunphy is also just the fifth coach to win 200 at two different Division I programs while also taking both schools to six or more NCAA Tournaments. He has joined Lou Henson (New Mexico, Illinois), Rick Pitino (Kentucky, Louisville), Eddie Sutton (Arkansas, Oklahoma State) and Roy Williams (Kansas, North Carolina) in this elite club. A part of Big 5 Basketball for the last six decades, Dunphy starred at La Salle as a player ( ) and served on the Explorer staff as an assistant coach before embarking on a 17-year stint as the head coach of the Penn Quakers ( ). He became the first person to serve as the head men's basketball coach at two Philadelphia Big 5 institutions when he took over the reins of the Temple program from Hall of Fame coach John Chaney on April 10, All he has done at Temple is win. Picked tied for fifth in the A-10 preseason poll, Dunphy motivated his charges to their first A-10 regular season title (9th overall) since 2002 with a 14-2 record. The 2010 A-10 and NABC District Coach of the Year brought the Owls back into the national spotlight with the program's first national ranking since 2001, with the team staying in the polls for 13 consecutive weeks. His Owls would go on to become just the second A-10 team to win three consecutive conference championships while also posting just the fifth perfect Philadelphia Big 5 season in the program's history. The number one accomplishment achieved by the Temple team, that finished the season with a #12 ranking in the Associated Press poll, was its 29 victories (against six defeats), which ranks third in the school's history. In , Dunphy led the Owls to a 26-8 record, including another 14-2 mark in A-10 play, and a fourth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. In , despite losing projected starter Scootie Randall for the season and center Micheal Eric for 13 games, Dunphy guided his charges to a 24-8 mark and the program's first outright A10 regular season title since The Owls finished 13-3 in league play and Dunphy earned his second A10 Coach of the Year honor for his efforts. Temple defeated #3/3 Duke to mark its fourth straight season with a win over a Top 10 opponent, and later cracked the national polls for the third straight year. Temple also knocked off a Top 10 team, this time #3/3 Syracuse, 83-79, at Madison Square Garden (12/22/12) to extend its current nation s best record to five straight seasons of defeating a Top 10 foe while being unranked at the time. Temple would finish the campaign with a record, advancing to the third round of the NCAA Tournament before narrowly falling to top-ranked Indiana, The Owls capped their final season in the Atlantic 10 Conference with a thrilling win over #19/21 VCU on CBS to finish tied for third in the league with an 11-5 record. The program struggled in , its first season in the American Athletic Conference. In a classic rebuilding year, the Owls posted a 9-22 record. The Cherry and White did continue its streak of wins over a nationally-ranked program to seven with a upset over #23 SMU. In , Dunphy led his team to the best turnaround among all Division I teams, posting 17 more wins than the previous season to finish at overall and 13-5 in the conference. A signature win over #10 Kansas was among the total as the Owls posted a victory over the Jayhawks at the Wells Fargo Center (12/22). The Owls finished the regular season 23-10, but were surprisingly left out of the NCAA Tournament. As the #1 overall seed in the NIT, Dunphy, in his time coaching in the tournament, guided Temple to wins over Bucknell, George Washington and Louisiana Tech to reach the semifinals, before falling to Miami at Madison Square Garden. Dunphy was named American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, marking his third conference coach of the year honor (A-10: 2010, 2012). He also joined Chaney (516) as one of only two coaches to win 500 or more games at Big 5 schools. Defying expectations yet again in , the Owls were picked to finish sixth in The American but instead Dunphy led his team to a 14-4 record and an American Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship. Temple fell to conference tournament champion in the semifinals, but was awarded a 10 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Owls took seventh-seeded Iowa to overtime before falling in their NCAA First Round game. Dunphy was named the American's Coach of the Year for a second year in a row, as well as the NABC District Coach of the Year. The campaign saw the Owls defeat ranked opponents on consecutive days for the first time in school history. Temple upset #25 Florida State and #19 West Virginia to win the 2016 NIT Season Tip-Off. With its projected starting backcourt sidelined for the season, the Cherry and White still finished and fell short of another postseason bid. One of the most respected coaches in the nation, Dunphy has coached eight Conference Players of the Year, three Conference Rookies of the Year, five perfect Conference seasons and 54 All-Conference honorees. Prior to joining Penn's coaching staff, Dunphy served as an assistant under Speedy Morris at his alma mater, La Salle University ( through ). The following year, Dunphy joined current Maryland head coach Gary Williams' staff at American University. He served as an assistant two seasons under Williams, and the final three years under Ed Tapscott, the former head coach of the NBA s Washington Wizards ( ). He returned to La Salle in 1985, serving one more season under Ervin and assisting Morris for two seasons. He left La Salle to become Tom Schneider's assistant at Penn in In 1989, Dunphy was named the 16th head coach at Penn. He would compile a overall record in his 17-year career. His Quaker teams won an unprecedented 48 straight Ivy League games and four league titles from 1992 through His team posted a 25-3 record and earned a Number 25 ranking in the CNN/USA Today Coaches' Poll, the program's first such ranking since the campaign. That year also included a first round upset of sixth-seed Nebraska in the NCAA Tournament. In his last eight seasons at Penn, Dunphy, who was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in May 2017, guided the Quakers to six Ivy League titles and a league record. He is also a member of the Philadelphia CYO Hall of Fame. A 1970 La Salle graduate with a degree in marketing, Dunphy was an outstanding player under Explorers' head coach Tom Gola. As a junior, he helped the Explorers to a 23-1 record. He served as a co-captain his senior year when he averaged 18.6 ppg and led the team in assists, while also being named the MVP of the annual Quaker City Basketball Tournament. In 1979, he earned a Master's degree in counseling and human relations from Villanova University. Dunphy and his wife, Ree, reside in Villanova, Pa., with their son, J.P.

He was 61. Stahurski, a two-year captain for the Owls, was a four-year starter for Temple from through , ending his career with 1,499 points which was the fourth-highest total at the time of his graduation (17th currently). He averaged double figures in scoring all four seasons, with a high of 15.7 points during his senior season. A two-time First Team all-philadelphia Big 5 honoree, Stahurski helped lead the Cherry and White to 24 wins, the third-highest total in school history at the time, and a berth in the 1978 National Invitation Tournament. During his two seasons as team captain, Temple won 41 games and lost 16. John Chaney Presented With Wanamaker Lifetime Achievement Award Former Temple men's basketball coach John Chaney was honored with the Lifetime Achievement award at the 2017 John Wanamaker Athletic Awards ceremony and luncheon at the Crystal Tea Room in the Wanamaker Building on Sept. 6. He was joined by former Temple women's basketball coach Dawn Staley, who received this year's Wanamaker Athletic Award for leading her current team, South Carolina, to the 2017 NCAA Championship. One of two Naismith Hall of Fame Temple men's basketball coaches, Chaney led the Owls to 516 wins, 17 NCAA Tournament appearances and five trips to the Elite Eight in his 24 years at the helm ( thru ). He is the school's all-time winningest basketball coach and retired in 2006 with 741 career wins over 34 seasons, including 10 at Cheyney University. Going OT Temple is all-time in overtime games and 17-6 in head coach Fran Dunphy s 11 seasons at the helm. The Owls OT win over La Salle on Nov. 11, 2016 was their first overtime game in a season opener (fourth overall) since a victory over Penn at the Palestra on Nov. 14, It was also the ninth time the two Big 5 rivals played an overtime game. Men's Basketball Earns Second Straight American Conference Team Academic Excellence Award in Tempe earned its second straight American Athletic Conference Academic Excellence Award in The award is given to the team that compiles the highest collective grade point average for their sport in the American Athletic Conference. The selections are made by the conference's Academic Affairs Committee. The winners were chosen based on the grade-point average of each student-athlete who appeared on an institution's roster as of the last contest of the championship segment in each conference-sponsored sport. Men's Basketball Among Record Seven Temple Teams to be Publicly Recognized for APR Temple men's basketball was one of a record seven Temple athletic teams to be publicly recognized for their multiyear academic performance rate (APR), the NCAA announced in May. Men's tennis was recognized for the fourth straight year while women's tennis and men's cross country garnered the honor for the second straight year. Men's and women's basketball, women's cross country and women's soccer were also honored by the NCAA. The APR announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams who demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APR's within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multi-year APR's in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. The scores required to be in the top ten ranged from 980 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport. John Baum Inducted into Mid-Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame John Baum, one of Temple's all-time great men's basketball players and currently its radio color analyst, was inducted into the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Hall of Fame in May, Baum was part of the 20-member class, featuring male and female student-athletes from all sports teams sponsored by the league. A three-time all-philadelphia Big 5 selection, Baum is one of five Temple players to score over 1,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds. He tallied 1,544 points, currently 14th on the school's all-time list, with his 17.9 scoring average ranking sixth. His 1,042 rebounds stood as the school record for 42 years until Lavoy Allen, currently with the NBA's Indiana Pacers, eclipsed the mark in Playing only three seasons, Baum compiled a 12.1 rebound average, good for third best in school annals. Steve Leonard Named to NABC Honors Court Redshirt senior guard/forward Steve Leonard was named to the NABC Honors Court this past July. The Honors Court recognizes those men's collegiate basketball student-athletes who excelled in academics during the past season. Leonard, a native of Collegeville, Pa. (Perkiomen Valley), made the team last year as a walk-on. He played in four games, scoring two points and grabbing three rebounds in eight minutes. The media studies and production major owns a 3.52 cumulative grade point average.
