Kent State posted a victory over the Red Wolves last season (12/29/11) in Jonesboro, Ark., as Marcus Hooten totaled a team-high 12 points with a game-best tying nine rebounds. ASU is averaging 57.0 points per game (114 total) while Kent State has averaged 59.5 points an outing (119 total) in the series. SCOUTING KENT STATE The Golden Flashes snapped a three-game losing streak with a non-conference home win over St. Francis (Pa.) Thursday (12/20) in Kent, Ohio. Senior forward Chris Evans led KSU with a game-high tying 17 points and a game-best nine rebounds in the win over St. Francis and sophomore guard Kris Brewer contributed 13 points. The Golden Flashes top two scoring leaders, Evans (16.1 ppg.) and senior guard Randal Holt (12.9 ppg.) have combined to account for 41.1% ( ) of the team s points production this campaign. In rebounding, Evans (7.5 rpg.) and junior forward Mark Henniger (4.1 rpg.) have accounted for 36.8% ( ) of the squad s output. To date, Finn has amassed 930 career points in 100 contests and has a 9.3 points per game average. He needs 83 points away from moving into a 23rd-place tie with Jabari Myles ( ; 1,013 career points) on ASU s all-time charts. Welcome Back: Junior forward Kendrick Washington returned to the court last Sunday (12/16) against Austin Peay after missing the previous game versus St. Bonaventure (12/8) due to an injury. Washington came off the Red Wolves bench to post nine points on four-of-six shooting from the field and also contributed three rebounds to go with two blocked shots. He netted three points with two blocked shots in 18 minutes against Murray State (12/19). Leaders of The Pack: Ed Townsel (14.6 ppg.) and Brandon Peterson (11.9 ppg.) are the two lone Red Wolves currently with double-figure scoring averages and the two have combined to generate 37.7% ( ) of the team s points production this season to date. Shot Swatter: Brandon Peterson s 140 career blocked shots presently ranks third all-time among ASU s leaders. Peterson, who chalked up a team-leading 17 shot rejections for a 1.7 blocks average this season, produced a squad-best 33 blocks in contests. He amassed a career season-most 61 blocks in 31 games in Peterson, who currently ranks 87th among this week s (12/16) national block shot leaders, recorded at least two blocks in a game on 10 occasions a season ago and claimed or shared teamhigh blocked shot honors a squad-best 17 times. Duly Recognized: Ed Townsel and Brandon Peterson were recognized by CollegeHoopsDaily as Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Players of the Month for their respective performances in the opening month of the season. The online publication honored five individuals from each NCAA Division I conference as the two A-State players were joined by Western Kentucky s Jamal Crook, Tony Mitchell of North Texas, and Augustine Rubit of South Alabama to comprise the Sun Belt Conference squad. Rubit was also recognized as the CollegeHoopsDaily s November SBC Player of the Month. Townsel averaged a teamhigh 17.0 points and had 2.0 rebounds an outing in six November games while Peterson paced the squad in both rebounding (10.2 rpg.) and blocked shots (2.3 bpg.) to go with a team second-best 11.2 points a game in six games for the month. Returning Firepower: Five of the squad s top six scorers are back this season, including leading scorer senior guard Marcus Hooten (12.5 ppg.). The five, which features four starters, accounted for 68.7% (1,510-2,198) of A-State s scoring last season. A Season Ago: A-State was 8-10 in non-conference games a season ago 5-2 at home, 1-7 on the road, and 2-1 at neutral sites. Early 2013 Signees: A-State has inked three individuals to date in the November early-signing period as guards Sean Gardner (Collierville, Tenn./Motlow College) and Jammar Mookie Sturdivant (Lapanto/East Poinsett County) along with forward Xavier Dupree (Houston, Texas/Trent International). The 6-4, 185- pound Gardner and the 6-1, 190-pound Sturdivant, who helped lead EPCHS to its third 2A state tourney championship crown ( ) in the last four seasons. Brady has certainly become accustomed to success throughout his distinguished coaching career as evidenced by a Final Four appearance and 295 career victories to his credit. A new era in ASU men s basketball history began on March 19, 2008 when Brady was announced as the Red Wolves 15th head coach in the program s history. Brady wasted little time making a positive impact on the A-State program as in his initial three years at the helm, he turned the Red Wolves into a success story on the court by capturing a share of the Sun Belt Conference s Western Division Championship title in along with compiling double-digit SBC wins back-to-back for the first time in nearly 20 years and going undefeated at home with a 13-0 record. During his first season with the Red Wolves, Brady helped lead ASU to one of the best starts in program history and achieved the No. 22 ranking on Collegeinsider.com s Mid-Major Top 25 poll. As a team, A-State greatly improved upon its defending and rebounding numbers, finishing near the top of the conference in several statistical categories. Brady would take the Red Wolves a step further in his second season ( ), improving their record to while making a Sun Belt Conference Tournament Semifinal appearance and finishing second in the SBC s West Division. For his efforts, Brady was named Sun Belt Coach of the Year and the District VII Coach of the Year by the USBWA. ASU also claim top league honors in three-point field-goal defense, rebounding offense, and defensive rebounding in For the season, A-State registered an 11-7 SBC record which signified its best conference mark since the campaign when ASU achieved an identical league mark. A-State s 11 wins represented the seventh time in which the Red Wolves compiled a double-digit league victories total since joining the Sun Belt. ASU would then duplicate its SBC wins in the season by finishing with an 11-5 conference ledger. Prior to Arkansas State, Brady spent 10-plus seasons serving as LSU s head coach. During his tenure at the school, Brady guided the Tigers to six postseason berths, two Southeastern Conference (SEC) Championship crowns and three SEC Western Division titles. With his success, Brady was tabbed as the SEC Coach of the Year twice ( and ). Brady s 16-year tenure as a head coach at both LSU and Samford in Birmingham, Alabama, has been decorated with achievements. He has coached a combined 25 All-TAAC and SEC selections, 48 academic all-conference choices, posted 11 winning seasons and collected five division championships. Brady piled up the third most wins in LSU history with 192 and left Samford after the season as the Bulldog s all-time leader in coaching victories (89) as well. Brady quickly turned around an LSU s men s basketball program that had suffered four consecutive losing seasons prior to his arrival, leading the Tigers to a 28-6 record, an SEC Championship and an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in just his third season ( ) at the helm. Under Brady s direction, the Tigers recorded six consecutive winning seasons from to while making three trips to the NCAA Tournament and two more to the NIT. The campaign saw LSU post a 27-9 overall record and advance to the Final Four for the first time in 20 years. Not only did Brady coach the Tigers to 23 wins versus ranked opponents, he also led them to victories head coach John brady over two teams ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press Poll (Arizona in and Duke in ). Additionally, he orchestrated a 19-game home winning streak over SEC opponents, the third longest stretch in LSU history. While at LSU, Brady coached two NBA Lottery picks and six current NBA players. The Tigers signed nine Parade All-Americans and four McDonald All-Americans under Brady, who also coached three SEC Players of the Year, four players named SEC Freshman of the Year, one SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and 17 All-SEC selections. Prior to taking over the reigns at LSU, Brady served as Samford s head coach from through He quickly turned around a Samford program, which was coming off six straight losing seasons, by guiding the Bulldogs to a overall record in just his second season. Brady went on to lead Samford to three consecutive winning seasons ( ) for the first time since , culminating in a 19-9 overall record and division crown in SU placed first in the Trans America Athletic Conference s (TAAC) West Division in each of Brady s final two seasons for the first time in program history. Brady s four winning seasons at Samford represented the first for any coach at the school. He directed SU to an record after the Bulldogs went the four seasons prior to his initial year. Brady coached eight All-TAAC and 14 Academic All-TAAC student-athletes over six seasons at Samford. A native of McComb, Miss., native, Brady earned his bachelor s degree from Belhaven College in He was a three-year starter at BC and scored over 1,000 career points. Brady, a two-time All-Southern States Conference selection, was inducted into his alma mater s Hall of Fame. Brady began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for the Mississippi State men s basketball program where he earned his master s degree from Brady took his first head coaching position in in 1977 at Louisiana s Crowley High School and led the basketball squad to a (.725) overall record in five seasons. He was honored as the 1981 Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 3-A Coach of the Year. Brady returned to the college coaching ranks in 1982 as an assistant coach at Mississippi State. He spent eight years with the Bulldogs, the first four seasons under coach Bob Hoyt and the proceeding four as a chief recruiter for coach Richard Williams. Following his tenure at MSU, Brady returned to Louisiana to serve as an assistant coach at the University of New Orleans.
