The Wildcats controlled the contest from the outset against the Seahawks, playing the first game in the program s history under coach Rollie Massimino. Massimino coached 19 seasons at Villanova and current coach Jay Wright served seven seasons as his assistant, including five at VU. Curtis Sumpter shed the cumbersome knee brace he had worn through much of his rehabiliation from left knee surgery on Saturday night and showed no ill effects from the layoff. The product of Brooklyn (N.Y.) Bishop Loughlin High School scored 16 points and collected seven rebounds in 20 minutes of his first regular season action since The journey to the Paradise Jam marks the fifth time in the last nine seasons that the Wildcats have participated in a preseason event off the mainland United States. Villanova participated in the Top of the World Classic (1998), Rainbow Classic (1999), Great Alaska Shootout (2002) and Maui Invitational (2003) prior to this event. The Cats are 8-4 (.667) in those events. This is the school s first visit to the U.S. Virgin Islands SCHEDULE AND RESULTS Date Opponent Result Score Record Big East Nov. 2 Northwood Reunion It was a matchup that Villanova head coach Jay Wright said was suggested to him by his friend, mentor and former boss, Rollie Massimino. Villanova would travel to West Palm Beach, Fla., to help Northwood University, an NAIA school, christen its basketball program and new arena. The night was filled with nostaligia and notable faces. Six members of Massimino s 1985 NCAA champions were in attendance along with such sports notables as Chuck Daly, Billy Cunningham, Bill Raftery and Bobby Orr. There was even a countess present - Countess de Hoernle, for whom the Northwood gym is named. There were pre-game ceremonies and even a halftime rendition of Happy Birthday for Massimino. For Villanova s Wildcats, though, this was a first step on a journey with a very different squad than the model which provided the Main Line with so many memories in It didn t take long for Villanova to end any hopes of an upset. The Wildcats scored 14 of the game s first 16 points and 30 of the first 38. Wright made extensive use of his bench while the Cats glided to a win, their fifth opening night triumph in six attempts under Wright. This was a good experience for us, stated Wright. It was opening night and our guys were excited to play. We knew how important this was to Coach Mass and we knew they would be prepared. I thought both teams played well and competed. Villanova s lead grew as large as 45 points in the second half. As for his first matchup with his mentor, Wright found it odd. It was strange, he said. I never looked down there (at the Northwood bench). I m used to standing beside him, not looking at him from the opposite bench. Curt s Comeback In the record books, Saturday will be marked as Curtis Sumpter s official return to the Villanova lineup after a 34-game absence dating to March 20, But in the mind of the fifth-year senior, who earned his undergraduate degree last May, this was game No. 3. I looked at our scrimmage against George Washington as my first game back and then the exhbition game as my second, he said. So, in my mind, this was my third game back. I felt good out there. Indeed, Sumpter appears none the worse for wear. He was a force that Northwood had difficulty contending with, connecting on 5-of- 7 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free throw line for 16 points. He also added seven rebounds in 20 minutes of action and, with the game in hand, saw no action after the first three minutes of the second half. With the score the way it was, stated Wright, that was enough for him. Earlier this week, Sumpter marked the one year anniversary of his second operation on his left knee, performed on Nov. 15, 2005 by noted specialist Dr. James Andrews. He has been Villanova Roster given clearance to shed the bulky brace that he wore in preseason workouts and now wears a sleeve on the joint. Sumpter averaged 15.2 ppg and 7.3 rpg a game in his last full season, He then injured the knee in a second round NCAA Tournament contest against Florida. After initially undergoing surgery on April 15, 2005, the product of Brooklyn s Bishop Loughlin High School re-injured the joint on Oct. 19, 2005 and accepted a medical redshirt. The 6-7 forward now has scored 1,111 points in his Wildcat career, good for 46th place in school history. With 12 more points, he will pass John Olive in 45th place and needs just 15 more points to move past Howard Brown into 44th place all-time. Noting Nardi One reason Villanova opened with a flourish was senior point guard and Cousy Award candidate Mike Nardi. The 6-2 native of Linden, N.J., scored nine of his 11 points in the first half and also added four assists and four steals. Nardi has been one of Villanova s most consistent performers over his career. He now has started 93 times in 97 appearances and is closing in on the 1,000-point plateau: he needs just 73 points to become the 49th player in school to reach that point. His four assists on Saturday give him 303 for his career and moved him past Harold Pressley - who was on hand - into 18th place on Villanova s all-time chart. No. Name Pos. Hgt. Wgt. 3 Dwayne Delivered In , Dwayne Anderson spent much of his time absorbing all he could from Villanova s talented contingent of perimeter performers. Now, with Randy Foye, Kyle Lowry and Allan Ray plying their craft in the National Basketball Association, Anderson is one of a group of Wildcats eager to help fill the void. In Villanova s early action he has been up to the challenge. After scoring 14 points in 12 minutes of action in Villanova s exhibition win over Holy Family on Tuesday, Anderson followed that with 16 points and eight rebounds in the win at Northwood. He also added four steals in 22 minutes - all of those numbers represented career highs. Anderson may have as much range on his jumper as any Wildcat. It is something the home crowd took note of in the exhibition game at the Pavilion. I could hear the crowd kind of gasp when Dwayne took a couple of those threes, said Wright. He has that kind of range, though. We see him make those all the time in practice. On Saturday Anderson converted 5-of-9 from the field, including 2- of-4 from beyond the 3-point arc and all four of his attempts from the free throw line. Defensive Doings Although its offense has been potent, defense remains at the core of Villanova s principals. In limiting the Seahawks to 60 points, Villanova allowed the Seahawks to connect on just.423 of its attempts from the floor. One year ago Villanova held the opponent to 60 points or less 15 times in 33 games. The Wildcats were 14-1 in that circumstance. Reynolds Wrap On Saturday night, freshman guard Scottie Reynolds became the first freshman to earn a staring assignment on opening night since , when both Nardi and Will Sheridan gained the nod. He quickly proved that he was not out of place. The 2006 McDonald s All-American connected on all six of his field goal attempts, including one from 3-point range, finishing with 13 points in just 16 minutes of action. He also added four assists. Reynolds path to Villanova was not a direct one. After signing a letter of intent to attend Oklahoma in the fall of 2005, the 6-2 guard from Herndon (Va.) High School elected to re-open his recruitment after Kelvin Sampson accepted the Indiana coaching position. The Sooners released Reynolds from the letter of intent and Wright was contacted to see if he had interest in recruiting Reynolds. At that point in the spring, Wright and his staff were awaiting word on whether Kyle Lowry would keep his name in the National Basketball Association draft or return to Villanova for his final two seasons of eligibility. Lowry ultimaely decided to cast his lot in the draft and was selected No. 24 overall by Memphis. Reynolds chose Villanova. It is the kind of thing that doesn t happen very often in recruiting, says Wright. Usually you spend so much time recruiting someone and he chooses another school. In this case, we really didn t recruit Scottie until the spring of his senior year. But he s a perfect fit for us. Bump s Blocks Forward Will Bump Sheridan - so nicknamed by his mother for his movement in the womb prior to birth - has been a quiet cornerstone of Villanova s success in the last two seasons. On Saturday, he added five rebounds, scored three points and blocked three shots. The native of Bear, Del., now has 116 blocks, good for seventh place on Villanova s all-time list. Series Stuff Villanova vs. College of Charleston Friday, Nov. 17, 2006 Paradise Jam~U.S. Virgin Islands/8:30 p.m. (EST) Sportstalk 950 (WPEN) All-Time: College of Charleston leads 1-0 Last Meeting: College of Charleston 71, VU 69 (Nov. 30, 2002) Jay Wright vs. College of Charleston: 0-1 Notes: These two teams meet for the second time on a neutral court... The first meeting came in the championship of the 2002 Great Alaska Shootout, with the Cougars pulling out a last second victory... Curtis Sumpter is the only current Wildcat to have played in that contest... In his fourth college contest, he saw 10 minutes of action, contributing two points, two assists and three rebounds... Villanova is 3-3 in November tournaments under Wright, having taken 2 of 3 at the 2002 Great Alaska Shootout while winning one of three at the 2003 Maui Invitational. Villanova vs. Xavier (Possible 2nd Round Opponent) Saturday or Sunday, Nov. 18 or 19, 2006 Sportstalk 950 (WPEN) All-Time: VU leads 16-3 Jay Wright vs. XU: 0-1 Notes: These squads last met in the 1994 NIT, with VU pulling out a victory... The Cats have won the last 13 in a row. Tall Order One year after starting a lineup featuring four athletes under 6-4, Villanova appears much different in Among the 14 players on the roster only three - guards Nardi, Reynolds and Ross Condon - stand less than 6-5. That size advantage could help the Wildcats on the glass. Against the Seahakws Villanova dominated on the backboards. The Wildcats grabbed 42 caroms to 20 for Northwood, which started a forward wall that included athletes standing 6-8, 6-7 and 6-5. We are a different looking team than we were last year, says Wright. We have more length and are hopeful we can become a strong rebounding team. Although some of the identities of those collecting the rebounds has changed, the approach has not. The Wildcats got help from a lot of places as five players - Anderson, Sumpter, Sheridan, Dante Cunningham and Reggie Redding - secured four or more rebounds. Of its 42 rebounds, 18 were of the offensive variety. A season ago, Villanova owned a slim rebounding edge over its opponents. In 16 BIG EAST games, the Wildcats foes were slightly better, outrebounding VU rpg.

4 The Polls Although it received votes in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Polls, Villanova began the campaign outside the top 25. In , the Cats were ranked every week of the campaign, opening the season at No. 5 in both polls. Villanova was never lower than No. 8 in either poll and rose as high as No. 2 in both polls after defeating Connecticut and Georgetown in February. This marks the first voting period Villanova has not been nationally ranked since January of In the preseason BIG EAST poll, the Wildcats were picked to finish seventh by the league s coaches.
