The Cats limited the Bison to.385 shooting. It marked the 12 th time this season Villanova held a team under 40 percent shooting. VU is 12-1 when holding a team below 40 percent shooting. This marks the third consecutive week in which Villanova is nationally ranked. The Wildcats are listed at No. 25 in the Associated Press poll (No. 22 last week.) Tuesday night marked the fifth time in that Villanova has built a lead of 30 points or better. It has done so in wins over UMBC, West Virginia, Kansas, Rutgers and Bucknell. The Wildcats return to the Main Line to host No. 15 Pittsburgh at the Pavilion on Sunday. ABC will televise the contest at 1:30 p.m. It is the first of two consecutive Pavilion national television appearances. Boston College is in town on Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. (ESPN2). 2 The Notebook VILLANOVA BASKETBALL GAMEDAY Bounced Back Against Bucknell Prior to its final non-conference matchup of the regular season, Villanova head coach Jay Wright took great care to point out to his Wildcats the nature of its opponent. This is a quality team, Wright stated of Bucknell, his alma mater. It won at Pittsburgh and St. Joe s, so you know that these guys wouldn t be intimidated coming here. In fact, the Bison arrived on the Main Line with a 17-7 record, atop the Patriot League. As the first of four games in a nineday span, it loomed as a potential pitfall for a club immersed in the Big East Conference regular season race. Villanova, though, made certain the Bison did not become a threat. The Wildcats used an 18-2 run midway through the first half to build a lead. VU was never threatened the rest of the way en route to an win over the Bison. That was a very good basketball team we beat, stated Wright afterwards. As a coach you are always concerned about guys understanding that they are facing a tough non-conference opponent in the middle of the Big East season. We spend a lot of time on not letting an opponent dictate how we play, and I m proud that we played Villanova basketball tonight like we have every night. If they get shooting the ball, you re in trouble. Pitt got behind early and it was over, so we were concerned about that. That s why I thought it was really a good defensive effort against their guards. (Kevin) Bettencourt is a heck of a player, and he didn t score. The Bison scored 17 points in the game s first 7:30, including 12 by center Chris McNaughton. Over the final 32:30, it totaled only 34 points. Bucknell s three starting guards, Abe Badmus, Charles Lee and Bettencourt combined for only 13 points. A halftime lead grew to with 8:08 left in the game. Wright made liberal use of his bench in the home stretch and sophomore Baker Dunleavy capitalized, scoring a career-high nine points to go with four rebounds. We were able to rest some people in the second half, said Wright. It was an added bonus. It s Worth Noting In Villanova endured 11 games of 20 turnovers or more. In , there were five such games and in six outings of 20 plus turnovers. Through 21 games in 2005, Villanova has yet to suffer through a game of 20 or more turnovers. The Wildcats have committed only 23 turnovers in their last two outings and are averaging 13.2 per game. A year ago the Wildcats averaged 16.3 tpg. One season after finishing last in the Big East in turnover margin, Villanova is second in that category (+3.24 per game). Only West Virginia (+4.18) has a better mark. Analyzing Allan Junior guard Allan Ray has been Villanova s most consistent weapon from the perimeter all year long. It was Ray who helped ignite the Wildcats on Tuesday. The native of the Bronx, N.Y. scored 10 first half points on his way to 23 points in the victory. Over the course of his three seasons at Villanova, Ray has emerged as one of the Big East s top deep threats. The 23 points he scored against Bucknell on Feb. 15 marked the 23r d time in his career on the Main Line that he has scored 20 points or better in a game. This junior guard has flourished in Big East play thus far. In nine games, he is averaging 18.7 ppg and is 30-of-71 (.423) from beyond the 3-point arc. On the season Ray averages 17.6 ppg and is connecting on.857 of his attempts from the free throw line. He is 58-of-131 (.443) from outside the 3-point arc in Ray now has 1,285 points in his career at Villanova, leaving him in 30 th place on the Wildcats all-time list. Next up in 29 th place with 1,307 points is Stewart Granger ( ). Foye Fell The most frightening moment for the sellout crowd of 6,500 in the Pavilion on Tuesday night came with10:18 left in the first half. On a fast break, Randy Foye fell hard to the floor as he attempted a dunk after being fouled by Badmus. Foye was helped off the court into the locker room. He returned to the bench in the second half but did not play, though Wright said he could have played if needed. Villanova Dress Roster No. Name Pos. Hgt. Wgt. 3 Over the last six seasons at Villanova, there have been six different Jason s starting Journey point guards: John Celestand ( ); Bobby Smith ( ); Jason Fraser s Jermaine first Medley three (latter seasons portion have of included and ); odyssey Derrick that only Snowden Homer could ( ); appreciate. Randy It Foye has been ( ) filled with and incumbent four surgical Mike procedures Nardi ( ). and a litany of health setbacks. Team Highs & In Lows his first two seasons, he missed time with stress fractures in his feet and knee tendonitis. This season (Oct. 22), Fraser underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. In January, just hours after enjoying the best game of his career at Providence (25 points, 13 rebounds), Fraser learned he had fractured the right navicular bone in his hand. He subsequently missed Villanova s next four games (VU was 2-2 in that period) after surgery on Jan. 14 to have a screw inserted in the fracture. One sign of how injuries have impacted Fraser is this: in 68 career games, he has logged more than 30 minutes just 16 times and just twice in 19 games of He has sat out 20 games over the course of his Villanova career. Despite playing only 19 minutes against Bucknell, Fraser made his presence felt. He led the Cats with eight rebounds and added seven points and two blocked shots. Interestingly, Fraser has improved his field goal percentage since returning from the fractured hand. He is 13-of-17 (.765) from the field over the course of the last six games and has also collected 45 rebounds (7.5 rpg), including 32 in his last three appearances. On the season he is 41-of-61 (.672) from the field. The product of Amityville, N.Y., now has 51 blocked shots (3.0 bpg) this season and 120 in his college career. He has moved into sixth place on the school s all-time blocked shots list but has some work to do to catch Harold Pressley (152) in fifth place. Due to his balky knees, Fraser receives daily treatment from the Villanova sports medicine staff and is available for practice on a limited basis. What he is able to do is amazing, Wright says. He doesn t get to practice with us that much but he gets in there and knows what we are doing. Fraser averages 7.2 points and 7.1 rebounds per outing. Catching Up With Curtis Curtis Sumpter continued his push towards 1,000 career points on Saturday, contributing14 points in the win over Bucknell. Sumpter could become the third member of Villanova s junior class to move into the 1,000 point fraternity this season. The product of Bishop Loughlin High School now has 959 career points and averages 15.7 ppg this season. Allan Ray passed the 1,000 point barrier on Dec. 22 while Randy Foye did so on Jan. 26. In addition to his scoring prowess, Sumpter leads Villanova in rebounding (7.6 rpg). Injury Index It has been a busy season already for Villanova s medical staff. In the last 22 months Wildcat players have undergone eight surgical procedures. Included are five knee operations (with a pair of ACL reconstructions), two operations to repair a broken bone in the foot and one to correct a broken bone in the hand. Thus far in , Kyle Lowry missed seven games recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee; Curtis Sumpter two with a sprained knee; and Jason Fraser four with a fractured right hand. In each of VU s five losses in it was without one of those three. Lowry was sidelined against Temple (a loss); Sumpter at Notre Dame (a setback); and Fraser against Georgetown (66-64) and Boston College (67-66). Lowry was 3-of-6 from the field and ended the night with nine points, seven assists (also a season high) and only one turnover. He also picked up a pair of steals. Since joining the lineup on Dec. 31 only three months removed from surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee Lowry has been an important contributor off the bench for the Wildcats. His quickness and defensive skill allow Wright to augment his three guard starting rotation of Randy Foye, Mike Nardi and Allan Ray. Lowry averages 6.7 points and 2.7 rebounds per outing Memorabilia Available On Jan. 14 Villanova released a special DVD on the 1985 NCAA Championship Team hosted by CBS and ESPN announcer Bill Raftery. Entitled A Family s Legacy: The Stories Behind Villanova s 1985 NCAA Championship, the DVD can be purchased in the Pavilion during Villanova home games. It can also be ordered through villanova.com. The cost is $24.95 plus $5.95 if shipping and handling is needed. A limited edition giclee print designed specifically for the 20 th anniversary by noted artist Dick Perez is available for purchase through the Block V Club ( ) and villanova.com. Notable Nardi The man at the wheel of Villanova s offensive attack is sophomore guard Mike Nardi. One area where Nardi has been efficient this season is with his ball handling. His assist to turnover ratio (84-45) is just a shade under 2:1. Last season, Nardi completed the campaign with 130 assists and 106 turnovers. After a slow start shooting this season, the product of St. Patrick s High School has picked up the pace of late. After beginning the campaign 1-of-20 from beyond the 3-point arc, the 6-1 guard is 32- of-88 (.363) from deep. He averages 9.0 ppg. Signed Up Three athletes signed national letters of intent with VU during the early signing period. Included on the list are: Dwayne Anderson (6-6, St. Thomas More); Dante Cunningham (6-8, Potomac School); and Frank Tchuisi (6-9, St. Benedict s H.S.). Philadelphia Big Five The historic tradition known as the Philadelphia Big Five continues in Villanova and its City Series rivals La Salle, Penn, Saint Joseph s and Temple are playing a complete round-robin schedule. Villanova began the Philadelphia Big Five portion of its slate on Dec. 4 against Temple. The Owls defeated the Wildcats in the City Series clash. Villanova bounced back with a win over La Salle on Dec. 11 and followed that with a victory over Penn at the Pavilion on New Year s Eve before a sellout crowd. On Feb. 7 the Wildcats completed the Big Five portion of the slate with a victory over Saint Joseph s before a sellout crowd at the Palestra. Big Five Standings Temple 3-0 Villanova 3-1 Pennsylvania 2-2 Saint Joseph s 1-2 La Salle 0-4 Home Cooking Villanova has capitalized on its home court advantage since the Pavilion opened its doors on Feb. 1, The Wildcats are (.769) in the Pavilion all-time. Each of Villanova s first nine campus games this year has featured sellout crowds (the capacity is 6,500). That extends the streak of consecutive regular season sellouts at the Pavilion to 51. The last time Villanova failed to sell out the Pavilion for a regular season game came during a blizzard on Dec. 30, 2000 against St. Francis (Pa.). Villanova is lifetime at the Wachovia Center and was 2-1 in its home away from home this season. Of the 28 opponents it has faced at the Center, no fewer than 12 have been nationally ranked entering the game. A sellout crowd of 19,966 watched the Cats fall to Syracuse on Feb. 12.It is the largest crowd to see Villanova host a game.
