2 MEN S BASkETBALL GAME NOTES UConn Closes Strong On Monday, Villanova attempted to extend a regular season winning streak to a length not accomplished by the Wildcats in 47 years - 12 games. But a rally in the final 10 minutes by host Connecticut ended the run of victories, which stretched to a Dec. 3 home win over Saint Joseph s. Kemba Walker s runner in the lane with 2.5 seconds remaining lifted the Huskies to a victory. "You'd rather learn from a win, but [UConn's] good," coach Jay Wright said. "Real good. Kemba's great and they use him great. He just didn't score. He makes people around him better. He made a huge play. Corey Fisher made great plays. Thank God for him. For the third time in its last four outings, Villanova found itself in a hole before scoring its first bucket. The Wildccats trailed 10-0 before a Maalik Wayns jumper got them on the board. Villanova battled back to gain a halftime advantage. With just 9:10 remaining it held a lead. However, the Wildcats weren t able to generate much offense beyond Fisher down the stretch and UConn executed just enough offense to pick up the win. There s a lot of good teams out there, said Fisher. We ve got to move on. Fisher Flashes Corey Fisher s scoring bonafides were burnished last August after word spread of a 105-point explosion during a summer league performance in his native Bronx, N.Y. After a strong start to , Fisher endured a four-game stretch in December where he was just 8-of-40 from the field (.200). But he rebounded from that and has been exceptional at both ends since the calendar page turned to Fisher scored the Wildcats final 11 points, twice lifting Villanova into a tie after it trailed by four and five points in the final three minutes. In addition to his 28 points, he had six assists without committing a turnover. He was great, stated Wright. What I liked most is that he didn t get drawn into matching Kemba basket for basket. Everything came within our offense. It was also announced last week that Fisher is one of 20 finalists for the Bob Cousy Award, given each year to the nation s top point guard. Fisher leads the Wildcats at 16.1 ppg and ranked fifth in the BIG EAST in scoring. VU is 5-0 this season when Fisher reaches the line eight or more times in a contest. In four seasons on the Main Line, VU is 10-2 (.833) when he steps to the line 10 or more times in a game. Villanova Roster Stokes Strokes One of the essential storylines of has been the growth of senior guard Corey Stokes, who has been instrumental in VU s success thus far. Stokes ranked third in the BIG EAST by Ashton Gibbs and Preston Knowles in 3-point field goals made per game (2.94). He is 53-of-121 (.438) from deep and accounts for 47 percent of Villanova s made triples on the season. A notable area of improvement for Stokes in has been his ability to get to the free throw line. As a junior in , he attempted just 55 free throws all season - an average of 1.67 per outing. This year he has visited the line 69 times, an average of 3.8 attempts per game and has drained 65 (.942) to lead the BIG EAST in Free Throw Percentage.. Stokes averages 15.8 points and 3.6 rebounds per outing. A Cheek Peak Sophomore guard Dominic Cheek did not travel with the Wildcats to Storrs as he received treatment for a sprained left knee suffered in the first half in last Saturday s win over Maryland. An MRI on Monday revealed no additional damage to the knee. Cheek will continue to receive treatment this week and is officially listed as questionable for the contest at Syracuse. No. Name Pos. Ht. 3 MEN S BASkETBALL GAME NOTES D Tales When Villanova has been at its best in recent years, it has been sturdy defensively. The early returns suggest the Cats are an improved defensive unit. Villanova limits foes to 61.9 ppg. Only Cincinnati and Syracuse (60.1 ppg) have been more stingy among BIG EAST squads. The Wildcats have been particularly adept at limiting damage from beyond the 3-point arc. Connecticut was 5-of-16 (.313) from long distance on Monday afternoon. On the season, VU s opponents are 103-of-362 (.285) from beyond the 3-point arc. Syracuse is one percentage point better in defending the three (.284). That 70 s Show On Monday afternoon, UConn held Villanova to a seasonlow in points (59). It marked the first time in the last two seasons - 51 games - that VU failed to reach the 60-point plateau. When it comes to points, Villanova s numbers illustrate that the 70 s and 80 s are where it s at. Consider: when scoring 70 points or more this season, Villanova is 14-0 (1.000). It is 2-2 (.500) when scoring less than 70 points. Extending it back further, the Wildcats are 3-6 (.333) when scoring less than 70 points since the start of They are 38-4 (.905) when they reach the 70-point plateau. Since the start of , when the current senior class were freshmen, VU is (.883) when scoring 70 points or more in a game. When the Wildcats accumulate fewer than 70 points in that span, they are (.333). Setting a Tone Another Villanova senior continues to play an instrumental role in the Wildcats success. Fifth-year senior Antonio Pena has been a steady force up front for VU. Thus far in , Pena is 76-of-135 from the floor (.567). That is especially impressive since more of Pena s attempts are coming from the foot range instead of just around the basket. He ranks second to Rick Jackson of Syracuse (.581) in field goal percentage among BIG EAST players. Since the start of , Pena is 203-of-355 (.572) from the field. The native of Brooklyn, N.Y. added five rebounds and eight points against Connecticut. Career Calculations A few notes on the progress of current Wildcats on the school s all-time records list. Corey Fisher is approaching the 1,500-point milestone. He now has 1,447 points, which ranks him 26th all-time at VU. Lance Miller is in 25th place at 1,468. His 416 assists place him in a tie for 12th place with Randy Foye. Corey Stokes now has 1,166 points, 44th all-time. Antonio Pena has collected 663 rebounds in four seasons, good for 24th place all-time at Villanova. The senior now has 955 career points and could become the school s 54th 1,000- point scorer. Corey Fisher and Scottie Reynolds each scored 22 points in last season s battle at the Wachovia Center. Eye on the Line A year ago, Villanova offered a statisitical contradiction of sorts. For while it ranked second in the BIG EAST regular season in defensive field goal percentage at just under 41 percent, it was listed 14th in the league in points allowed.(75.6 ppg). The disparity was owed to free throw shooting. In BIG EAST action last season, the Wildcats put their opponents at the free throw line 531 times - an average of 29.5 attempts per contest. For the complete schedule, VU put its opponents on the line 910 times - an average of 27.6 attempts per game. Thus far in , VU has put its opponents on the line 340 times - an average of 18.9 per contest. The better news for Villanova is that it continues to get to the line at its end of the court. It was 12-of-16 (.750) from the line on Monday and is at.769 for the season, tops in the BIG EAST.UConn is next at.762. The Cats have attempted 110 more free throws than their opponents thus far in Corey Fisher leads VU in FT attempts (108).

4 MEN S BASkETBALL GAME NOTES Perfect in the Philadelphia Big Five Villanova completed the Philadelphia Big Five portion of its slate on Dec. 30 with a victory over Temple at the Pavilion. The win gave the Wildcats their fourth perfect City Series slate in the last six seasons and the outright title. Earlier in December, VU downed Saint Joseph s, Penn, and La Salle. Four More on the Way Four athletes have inked national letters of intent to enroll at Villanova and join the men s basketball program in the fall of 2011, it was announced today. The group includes: 6-5 Darrun Hilliard of Liberty (Pa.) High School; 6-2 Tyrone Johnson of Montrose Christian School (Md.); 6-9 Markus Kennedy of Brewster (N.H.) Academy; and 6-4 Achraf Yacoubou of Long Island (N.Y.) Lutheran High School. Our staff is very excited about this class, stated Wildcats head coach Jay Wright. Each one of these young men brings great talent, character and commitment to our program and we re thrilled to have them join our Villanova Basketball Family. Hilliard averaged 18 ppg in helping Liberty High School to the Pennsylvania Class AAAA state semifinals in He played his AAU basketball for the New Jersey Warriors. Darrun brings us so many qualities that we value at Villanova, states Wright. He has a great feel for the game and a knack for doing what s needed to win. He scores when his team needs him to score, gets big rebounds and is an extremely versatile player. Darrun has received excellent coaching from Chad Landis at Liberty. We think he s very well prepared to make the transition to this level. Johnson hails from Plainfield, N.J., where he established himself as an elite prospect in at Plainfield High School. He averaged 18.9 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game and becomes the latest of a group of Garden State natives to play for Wright that includes Randy Foye, Mike Nardi, Corey Stokes and Dominic Cheek. Johnson has since transferred to Montrose Christian School in Maryland, where he is playing in On the AAU circuit, he played with Team Final. Ty continues the great line of Villanova guards from the state of New Jersey, noted Wright. We think with his ball-handling and athletic skills, he can make an immediate contribution to our program. He has the kind of toughness and tenacity we look for in young players. We know that he is being wellschooled at Montrose by Coach Stu Vetter. Kennedy, a 6-9 forward, is a Yeadon, Pa., product who signed a national letter of intent to attend Villanova in the fall of He subsequently elected to enroll for a prep year at Brewster Academy after playing the campaign at the Winchendon (Mass.) School. On the AAU circuit, he has played for the New England Playaz. Markus is a versatile forward who has really benefitted from the prep school experience, stated Wright. He is a fine young man who has grown into an impressive basketball player. We think he will develop into an outstanding Big East power player as his college career unfolds. Under the tutelage of Jason Smith, we know he will be very well prepared when he arrives next fall. Yacoubou, is like former VU standout Allan Ray and current senior Corey Fisher, a native of the Bronx, N.Y. He has made his mark as an outstanding wing player at Long Island Lutheran High School and played for Rich Soils AAU squad. Asch is a hard-working and talented guard with tremendous upside, said Wright. He is very committed to becoming a great player and has been well taught by his coach John Buck. We re excited to have him join our basketball family. The Last Time it Happened...
