The Wildcats 22 wins are the most in a single season since , when they finished the season with a mark. This is the 30 th time in school history that Villanova has won 20 or more games in a season. Junior guard Randy Foye was stellar in Big East Tournament action in New York City. Foye scored 45 points (22.5 ppg) in two games, including a game-tying basket with 10 seconds left in the semifinal loss to West Virginia. For his efforts, Foye was named to the all-tournament team, the first Wildcat so honored since As the No. 5 seed in the Syracuse region, Villanova faces Mountain West Conference Tournament champion New Mexico (26-6) in the first round. 2 The Notebook VILLANOVA BASKETBALL GAMEDAY Season In Review To glance at the final record (22-7 overall, 11-5 Big East) those unfamiliar with the details might conclude that the Villanova Wildcats path to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1999 was straightforward. Alas, the road has offered more than its share of divots and detours. It began in September. Shortly after enrolling in fall classes, incoming freshman Kyle Lowry suffered a torn ACL in his left knee. He underwent surgery and it was suspected that he would be lost for the balance of the campaign. A month later, Jason Fraser underwent arthroscopic surgery on his troublesome right knee. He missed three weeks of practice. Despite the health woes, the Wildcats managed to establish themselves as a solid club in December. Relying heavily on juniors Randy Foye, Curtis Sumpter and Allan Ray, Villanova slipped only in the Big Five Classic against Temple and took a 6-1 mark into a New Year s Eve appointment with Penn. Among the Cats available that day was Lowry, fresh from a remarkably speedy recovery from his injury. With one spectacular drive he announced his arrival and the Cats picked up a win over the Quakers. Following a strong effort in the Big East opener against West Virginia an win over the No. 21 team in the nation VU headed to Notre Dame. Late in practice on Jan. 7, Sumpter crumpled to the floor with an injury to his right knee. The initial prognosis was dark one physician suggested Sumpter s absence would be counted in months, not weeks. Yet the Cats persevered, splitting a pair of contests without Sumpter. In the second one, a Jan. 11 win at Providence, it was Fraser who emerged with a 25 point, 13 rebound to key the overtime win. With Sumpter making rapid progress in his recovery, all seemed right for Villanova as it boarded its flight home late that night. A perilous 14 minutes in the air gave Villanova reason to be grateful. The team s chartered jet was forced to make an emergency landing back at the Providence airport. Everyone was safe but it was an experience that impacted all on board. The next morning Fraser learned that he had suffered a fractured bone in his right hand that would send him to the sidelines for several weeks. Villanova then dropped a decision to Georgetown when the Hoyas sank two free throws with.1 seconds left on the clock. At Boston College on Jan. 19, the undefeated Eagles rallied from a deficit with 1:40 left to escape with a triumph. Three days later, with a snowstorm raging outside the Wachovia Center, Villanova made its move. The Wildcats turned a seven point halftime lead over Kansas into a edge late in the second half. The final was over the No. 2 team in the nation. On Jan. 26, VU picked up another important win, this a victory over Notre Dame. The Wildcats trailed most of the night yet found a way to stifle the Irish in the second half and win on a night when they shot just.367 from the field. In February, a month that had been cruel to Villanova in , the Wildcats entered a new realm, earning a spot in the top 25 for the first time since the final poll of The Wildcats entered the Associated Press poll on Jan. 31 and have remained there since. Villanova picked up Pavilion victories over Pittsburgh and Boston College in late February. It gave the Wildcats a 4-3 record against ranked opponents in The Wildcats captured a share of the Philadelphia Big Five title (3-1) with Temple and earned the No. 4 seed in the Big East Tournament presented by Aeropostale. Along the way Villanova lost 46 games to injury. Among those were injuries that impacted four of the top seven players in the rotation (Fraser, Lowry, Nardi and Sumpter). With its best conference finish since 1997, VU earned the No. 4 seed in the Big East Tournament and a first round bye. In the quarterfinals they faced a rematch against No. 24 Pittsburgh. The Cats turned the tables on Pitt, using the kind of stifling defense that has been the Panthers trademark to grind out a triumph. Villanova advanced to the Big East semifinals against West Virginia and trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half. But sparked by all-tournament pick Randy Foye, the Wildcats rallied to pull even with 10 seconds left on a Foye basket. However, Mike Gansey converted a pair of free throws with.1 seconds left to give the Mountaineers a win and a berth in the Big East Final. Villanova Dress Roster No. Name Pos. Hgt. Wgt. 3 VILLANOVA BASKETBALL GAMEDAY Over the last six seasons at Villanova, there have been six different Catching starting Up point With guards: Curtis John Celestand ( ); Bobby Smith ( ); Although Jermaine he s been Medley slowed (latter by a portion knee injury of originally and ); suffered Derrick on Jan. 7, Snowden junior forward ( ); Curtis Randy Sumpter Foye has ( ) continued and to incumbent a force Mike for Villanova. Nardi ( ). Team Highs & When Lows Sumpter fell to the floor at Notre Dame s Joyce Convocation Center at the end of a practice session, Sumpter was VU s leading scorer and rebounder. In the immediate aftermath there was some concern that the injury to Sumpter s right knee might cause him to miss an extended period. It turned out his knee was sprained and he only missed two games. The native of Brooklyn, N.Y., has worn a brace on his knee since that point and twice was forced to leave games after tweaking the knee (on Feb. 23 against Boston College and March 5 at St. John s). On both occasions Sumpter returned to the game. Curt, stated head coach Jay Wright is a warrior. There has been across the board improvement by Sumpter but the most tangible gain has come from beyond the 3-point arc. In his first two seasons on campus, the product of Bishop Loughlin (N.Y.) H.S. was 30-of ) from beyond the 3-point arc. In he is 38-of-88 (.432) from deep. The 20 points Sumpter produced on Feb. 23 against Boston College marked the seventh time this season that Sumpter recorded 20 points or more in a game Villanova is 7-0 in those situations. This season Sumpter averages 16.2 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest. Sumpter averages 16.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. He earned second team All-Big East recognition. The Read on Ray Junior guard Allan Ray is one of Villanova s most potent weapons and its leading scorer (17.3 ppg). In post-season balloting the native of the Bronx, N.Y., he was named second team All-Big East. A look at the numbers indicates why. Ray ranked fifth in the Big East in scoring, third in free throw percentage (.827), and fourth in 3-point field goal percentage (.408). Ray now has 1,417 points in his career at Villanova leaving him in 25 th place on the Wildcats all-time list. Next up in 24 th place is Alvin Williams (1,423). Jason s Journey Jason Fraser s first three seasons have included an imposing obstacle course of physical woes. A host of health setbacks have been a part of each of his three seasons on campus. In his first two seasons, he missed time with stress fractures in his feet and knee tendonitis. This season (Oct. 22), Fraser underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. In January, hours after enjoying the best game of his career at Providence (25 points, 13 rebounds), Fraser learned he had fractured the right navicular bone in his hand. He subsequently missed Villanova s next four games (VU was 2-2 in that period) after surgery on Jan. 14 to have a screw inserted in the fracture. One sign of how injuries have impacted Fraser is this: in 76 career games, he has logged more than 30 minutes just 16 times and only three times in 25 games of He has missed 20 games over the course of his Villanova career. This season he averages 20.9 mpg to go with 6.2 ppg and 6.5 rpg. Bumping Along Forward Will Sheridan is known as Bump to his teammates and friends. This season he has helped Villanova compensate for Fraser s limited availability by starting 26 games. The Bear, Del., native averages 5.0 ppg and 5.7 rpg. NCAA Tournament Notebook This marks Villanova s 20 th NCAA Tournament appearance since 1969 This is also the 20 th anniversary of Villanova s only NCAA title VU upset defending champion Georgetown at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky. Current assistant coach Ed Pinckney was named Most Outstanding Player in 85 Jay Wright joined the Villanova coaching staff in 1987 and was an aide to Rollie Massimino when the Cats reached the Final Eight in 1988 The school s first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1939 resulted in a Final Four appearance. Defensive Details Perhaps the single greatest difference between the Villanova Wildcats and the current edition can be found in the defensive numbers. A year ago, VU ranked 12 th in the Big East in scoring defense (68.7 ppg) and ninth in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.336). This season the Wildcats surrender 62.7 ppg and.319 from beyond the 3-point arc. What s more, in the previous two seasons when VU shot 40 percent or less from the field it was 2-18 (.100). This season, the Wildcats are 9-5 (.643) when connecting on 40 percent or less from the floor.

Foye followed a 23-point performance in VU s Big East Tournament victory over Pittsburgh with a 22 point, five rebounds and four assist effort in a loss to West Virginia. Over his last six games Foye is averaging 18.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. That has raised his average to 15.1 ppg. In addition to offense and rebounding from the guard position, Foye offers superior defense. He frequently is assigned the opponent s top perimeter threat and led the Big East Conference in steals during the regular season. (He takes a 2.1 spg average into NCAA Tournament play.) Perhaps the most notable aspect of Foye s contribution this season is that it has often come when it is most needed. With Mike Nardi out of action against Boston College, Foye stepped forward with 23 points to lead the upset over the No. 3 ranked Eagles in February. With Curtis Sumpter on the shelf at Notre Dame on Jan. 8, Foye delivered 26 points. In the Big East Tournament he was VU s most consistent offensive weapon. Foye has fulfilled a preseason goal to reduce his turnovers as well. This season he has 92 assists against 57 turnovers. In his first two seasons on the Main Line, Foye had 217 assists to go with 236 turnovers. Injury Inventory It has been a busy season already for Villanova s medical staff. In the last 24 months Wildcat players have undergone eight surgical procedures. Included are five knee operations (with a pair of ACL reconstructions), two operations to repair a broken bone in the foot and one to correct a broken bone in the hand. Thus far in , Kyle Lowry missed seven games recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee; Curtis Sumpter two with a sprained knee; Jason Fraser four with a fractured right hand; and Mike Nardi two with a sprained right ankle. Villanova was without a key member of its rotation in its first four losses in Lowry was absent against Temple. Sumpter did not play at Notre Dame and Fraser missed two losses (G'town and BC). Kyle s Contribution Freshman Kyle Lowry provided an immediate lift for Villanova upon joining the active roster on Dec. 31, following September surgery to repair a torn ACL. He earned Big East Rookie of the Week honors in February when he stepped in for an injured Nardi and led VU to wins over Boston College and Georgetown. Philadelphia Big Five The historic tradition known as the Philadelphia Big Five continued in Villanova and its City Series rivals La Salle, Penn, Saint Joseph s and Temple played a complete round-robin schedule with the Wildcats and Owls sharing the City Series title. Villanova began the Philadelphia Big Five portion of its slate on Dec. 4 against Temple. The Owls defeated the Wildcats in the City Series clash. Villanova bounced back with a win over La Salle on Dec. 11 and followed that with a victory over Penn at the Pavilion. On Feb. 7 the Wildcats completed the Big Five portion of the slate with a victory over Saint Joseph s. Temple s victory over La Salle on March 5 gave it a share of the crown with Villanova. Big Five Standings Villanova 3-1 Temple 3-1 Pennsylvania 2-2 Saint Joseph s 2-2 La Salle 0-4 Signed Up Three athletes signed national letters of intent with VU during the early signing period. Included on the list are: Dwayne Anderson (6-6, St. Thomas More); Dante Cunningham (6-8, Potomac School); and Frank Tchuisi (6-9, St. Benedict s High School ). Net Gains A statistical barometer that offers an indication of Villanova s improvement in can be found in the squad s turnover margin. A year ago, the Wildcats were last (14 th ) in the Big East with a margin of In the regular season only West Virginia (+3.89) had a better margin than VU (+3.37). In the three seasons preceding this one, there were 22 outings when Villanova committed 20 or more turnovers in a game. In , there have been none. VU committed only five turnovers in its Big East semifinal loss to West Virginia. First Time This marks VU s first NCAA Tournament appearance under Jay Wright. Wright led Hofstra to tourney berths in 2000 and 2001 (0-2).
