Hawaii leads the series with a 2-1 advantage with two straight wins. It is the second time Pitt plays at Hawaii. The two teams last met in the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu on Dec. 30, 1990, an Hawaii win. Other meetings include a Hawaii win in the Ama Hawkeye Classic in Iowa City, Iowa on Dec. 3, 1982 and a Pitt win at Fitzgerald Field House on Feb. 5, Pitt is 3-4 all-time vs. Big West opponents. Pitt will travel to Maui, Hawaii early Wednesday morning to play Hawaii (Friday, Nov. 21) and three contests as part of the EA Sports Maui Invitational, Nov Pitt (2-0) plays its third game of the season when it plays the University of Hawaii (3-1) on Friday, Nov. 21 at the War Memorial Gym in Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii. Tipoff is at Midnight ET/7 p.m. Hawaii Time for the contest. Friday night s game against Hawaii will not be televised. Recently, Pitt has experience much success in road games. Pitt, which finished 7-2 on the road last year, enters the Hawaii game on a three-game road win streak. Pitt s 7-2 road record in the ACC proved to be the league s best road record. In addition, Pitt has won nine of its last 11 road games and 13 of its last 17. With its 2-0 record, Pitt opened its 108th season of men s basketball this past weekend with a 33-point victory over Niagara (78-45) on Friday night and a Maui Invitational win over Samford. Against Niagara, Pitt claimed its 18th consecutive season opener. Pitt, which jumped out to a 26-3 lead after 10 minutes of action, held Niagara to 25.0 percent shooting (12-48), which ranks as the fourth lowest shooting percentage for a Pitt opponent in school history, 12 field goals, the sixth TODAY S TOP STORYLINES Pitt coach Jamie Dixon is a former University of Hawaii assistant coach in two different stints ( and ). He served under legendary Hawaii coach Riley Wallace, who is expected to be in attendance. Dixon s wife is from Honolulu. Pitt makes its fourth all-time competition trip to Hawaii. In its previous three trips to Hawaii, Pitt played in the Rainbow Classic in 1986, 1990 and It claimed the 1986 Rainbow Classic title with wins over Kansas, Arkansas and Wisconsin. Pitt owns a 7-2 all-time record in games played in Hawaii. It is Pitt s first appearance in the Maui Invite. Jamel Artis led Pitt with a career-high 14 points (6-9 FG), Josh Newkirk added 12 points and five assists, Cameron Johnson finished with 11 points (4-5 FG) in his debut and Chris Jones added a careerhigh 10 points. Three Panthers: Artis, Jones and Joseph Uchebo each made their first career start. Against Samford, Michael Young scored a career-high 20 points on shooting and Jamel Artis added 12 points as the Panthers defeated the Bulldogs Pitt used an 18-3 run before halftime to build an eight-point lead en route to the win. Pitt assisted on 20 of 24 field goals, outscored Samford 24-0 in fast break points and in the paint. Pitt returns three starters senior off guard Cameron Wright, point guard Robinson and power forward Young and eight of its top 10 scorers from a team that finished overall, 11-7 and in fifth place in its first year in the ACC and earned a 12th NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 13 seasons. In mid-october, Pitt was picked by Atlantic Coast Conference media members to finish sixth among 15 schools in its annual preseason poll. Pitt has won 120 of its last 168 overall games, 125 of its last 173, 269 of its last 359 contests, 118 of its last 179 league regular season games and 156 of its last 169 nonconference games. PITT-HAWAII TIES Pitt s Hawaii trip serves as a Homecoming of sorts for Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon. Dixon served as an assistant coach at the University of Hawaii in two different stints: and Under Hawaii coach, Dixon was an assistant on a staff that guided the Rainbows to the Western Athletic Conference title and the school s first NCAA Tournament appearance in 22 years. JAMIE DIXON APPROACHING 300 CAREER WINS Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon needs only 10 victories to become just the second head coach in school history to surpass 300 career victories. Pitt was selected by league media members to finish sixth out of 15 schools at its second Atlantic Coast Conference Operation Basketball preseason media day held Wednesday at the Westin Hotel in downtown Charlotte. Dixon was named the 2011 Sporting News National Coach of the Year after leading Pitt to the Big East regular season outright title. Played in the Pitt JamFest AAU tournament at the Petersen Events Center on April 24, Head Coach Jamie Dixon offered him a walk-on spot following the event. Chose Pitt for its pre-med program with the opportunity to play on its top college basketball program.
