6 Registration: Entry Fee: $1500 per player (includes registration fee and Championship Program) Payment payable to Catholic Central High School Breakfast Banquet: $1500 per player and coach Payment payable to Catholic Central High School **Registration Deadline: Noon, Monday, April 28, ) Entries will only be accepted from the zone secretary or designate All entries must be submitted electronically Zone Secretaries will be ed two Excel files- one to register entries (2014 Badminton Zone Entry Form) and one to calculate registration fees (2014 Zone Fee Form) The Zone Secretary will enter their entries in the exact order as specified in the 2014 Badminton Zone Entry Form For each entry, you will need the athlete s surname, first name, school, the school s city, zone and class (eg 4A, 3A, 2A, 1A) An updated list of school classes is available from your school administrator Once the 2014 Badminton Zone Entry Form and Zone Fee Form is complete, it should be ed to Joanne Polec at joannepolec@holyspiritabca with a copy sent to Fiona at ASAA at fiona@asaaca by noon on Monday, April 28, ) The Zone Entry Form and Zone Fee Form should be printed and signed by the Zone Secretary and brought to Registration on Friday morning along with the zone entry fee cheque All cheques should be made payable to: Catholic Central High School *Changes to the zone team registration may be made prior to the event by the Zone Secretary contacting Joanne Polec Late changes may adversely affect the seeding so please contact Joanne as soon as changes are required Changes will be accepted on the first day of the event if the Zone Secretary submits a completed Official Registration Change form (found at the end of this package) prior to 10:30 am Friday, May 2, 2014 If a change cannot be properly made, the spot in the draw will remain empty resulting in forfeiture ASAA POLICY: If the change is not made by the deadline stated above or an athlete fails to show, the offending athlete s school will be penalized an additional $50 per no show to a maximum of $250 The ASAA Executive will have the sole discretion to impose the penalty based on the rationale provided by the school for late withdrawal Accommodations: Our host website for accommodations are sponsored by wwwvisitlethbridgecom This is the most efficient way to book your hotel rooms, and compare prices in Lethbridge! Viewing Areas: Catholic Central High School chairs and bleachers will be available for viewing University of Lethbridge chairs and bleachers will be available for viewing Please note: there is no entry fee for spectators Warm-up Time: Athletes will receive a maximum 2-minute warm-up time just prior to the beginning of their matches Single Seeding/Round Robin: Warm-ups begin at 1:15 pm Play will begin at 1:45 pm at all venues

7 Concession: Catholic Central High School the cafeteria within the school will be open University of Lethbridge multiple food services will be open in the food court located in the Students Union building This includes Campus Coffee Company (specialty coffee and snacks), Subway, Smoothie Hut, Hiroba Asian Cuisine and Red Fort Indian Food Registration Upon Arrival: **Numerous restaurants available on West side of Lethbridge Registration for teams will take place on Friday, May 2, between 9:00 am and 11:00 am at Catholic Central High School Campus East Athletes Breakfast/ Banquet: The Athletes Breakfast will take place from 9:00-11:00am in Café Central, the cafeteria at CCHS Campus East Athletes must register first (in the Vasey Hall gymnasium) and receive their registration packages as there will be a ticket for the breakfast in the package This ticket must be presented at the breakfast Teams/ athletes may drop in any time between 9:00-11:00 am as the breakfast is buffet-style The cost for athletes and coaches is $1500 a person Dress is school attire or track suits/ casual Coaches Meeting: This meeting provides an opportunity for the host school committee to review and clarify all procedures that will take place during the two-day event This meeting will be held at Catholic Central High Campus East in the Eggplant Theatre at 11:00 am on Friday, May 2 Draw Times: See the attached schedules on the website and in the Information Packages when you register Friday morning, May 2 Opening Ceremonies: All athletes are to be in their colors together with their zone This will be a 45-minute program and attendance is compulsory Please be at Catholic Central High School Campus East Vasey Hall foyer at 11:30 am to line up with your zone for the parade of athletes into the gymnasium There will be volunteer to help athletes find their places The Opening Ceremonies schedule will be as follows: MC Welcome Parade of Athletes with introduction of zones Piping in of the dignitaries including Mayor Chris Spearman, Badminton CommissionerMacAlpine and Principal of Catholic Central High School Carol Koran Singing of O Canada Athletes Prayer Welcome speeches from dignitaries Catholic Central Performance from Show Choir, Steel Pan-thers, and FNMI dancers Closing Remarks Dismissal of Athletes Commemorative Shirts: Commemorative clothing will be available throughout the tournament at CCH East Registration on Friday from 8:00am-12:00pm, University of Lethbridge on Friday from 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm and on Saturday from 9:00 am 4:00 pm GIMMICS will be the company offering the clothing Their service provides the sale of the following items hoodies, short and long sleeved t-shirts, shorts, sweatshirts, golf shirts etc They are also equipped to customize specific to each player s request along with your choice of front and back cresting

8 Appeals/ Grievance Committee: This committee will be made up of: Kevin MacAlpine (Badminton Commissioner), Joanne Polec (co-chair-cch Campus West), Alex Fong (co-chair-u of L), Head Referee and four other coaches from independent zones decided at the coaches meeting Appeals must be forwarded to the badminton commissioner Photography: All category winners will be photographed for the ASAA Yearbook and will receive their ASAA Championship T-shirt Photographs will take place at the University of Lethbridge following medal presentations Medal Ceremonies: Following the respective category gold/silver and bronze medal games, the medals will be presented The school team awards will be presented after all the competitions have been completed and results have been calculated Presentation of School Team awards will take place at the University of Lethbridge Tournament Draw: In singles play, Category 1 and 2 will be determined after the qualifying round The qualifying round will be seeded prior to the competition by the ASAA Badminton Commissioner, according to ASAA regulations These draws will be available at the registration and coaches meeting on Friday, May 2 Results: All results will be posted on the host website At Catholic Central Campus West, results will be posted out in the gathering space near the main entrance to the gymnasium At the University of Lethbridge, results will be posted on in the hallway/ common area outside of the gymnasium ASAA Badminton Provincial Draw Annual Rotation 2014 A rotation system has been established to ensure a change in Division Pools from year to year This rotation applies only to doubles and mixed events Singles divisions are determined in the seeded qualifying round 1 South Central 1 South 2 Calgary 2 Central 3 North East 3 North Central 4 North West 4 Edmonton **Due to some athletes choosing not to show up on the Saturday of the competition and in respect of good sportsmanship and honouring one s opponent, the ASAA Executive Committee has mandated that the host can impose a penalty of $200 per player to a maximum of $500 per team billed to the school of any athlete who does not show up for their scheduled match on Saturday

9 House Rules: 1 Use all garbage and recycling bins provided 2 Wear only clean, indoor, non-marking shoes on the courts 3 Be a Good Sport and conduct yourself according to the ASAA Code of Ethics 4 Only athletes and one coach per athlete or team is permitted on court 5 Only athletes called as next available or have urgent questions/ concerns may approach the draw desk 6 At both venues, there is only one entrance to the gymnasium Please follow signs 7 In order to increase the safety of athletes at all times, on-court bag drop zones will be utilized to contain warm-up equipment and valuables Bag drop areas will be clearly marked behind each court and athletes not using them will be asked to move their items Competition Information: a) The Zone Roster Sheet submitted to the Tournament Chairman by Monday, April 28, 2014 by noon, is the official Zone Roster Only names on that sheet will be considered to be eligible for the competition The only person allowed to make a change in entry will be the official zone coach b) All matches in each event will have a designated match number Matches will be played in numerical order as courts become available (refer to draw sheets posted at each venue) c) Players will be allowed no more than 5 minutes between matches except between the semi-final and final match This break will be no more than 15 minutes d) Please be prompt When your match is called, check in with the venue coordinator immediately If a competitor does not check in after 5 minutes, the match will be defaulted e) Players will decide side or serve at the beginning of the match by lot The winner of the previous game will serve first in the next game Players will change sides at the end of each game and at 11 points in the third game f) Players must referee their own games The player's side on which the shuttle falls is responsible for making the call If difficulties arise, the venue coordinator must be notified immediately g) The server is expected to call the score prior to each serve h) Coaching will be allowed after the first set for one full minute and after the second set for two full minutes, during this time neither the coach nor the athlete may leave the court In the third set players can have a one minute break at point 11, there will be NO coaching allowed during this time i) At the conclusion of the match, each player must sign the score sheet The winning side is then required to bring the score sheet to the scorer's table j) Warm-ups will be limited to no more than 2 minutes k) All medals will be presented after the matches followed by pictures of gold medalists l) Coaches and Players Please Note: Athletes must compete in a uniform that distinguishes their school or zone Uniforms contrary to this rule will be considered illegal When playing doubles, the uniforms shall match Clothing with offensive language or symbols will not be allowed Shorts should be worn during play No hats or dew rags shall be worn during competition or warm-up **Venue coordinators will instruct player or players to change if not in compliance with dress code If competitors are dressed inappropriately they will be asked to change into appropriate attire This rule will be strictly enforced by the venue coordinators ASAA Code of Ethics: This event will adhere to the ASAA Code of Ethics found on pages in the Policy Handbook which can be viewed at:

10 Sportsmanship: The Host Committee will once again be awarding Sportsmanship pins throughout the weekend Our Sportsmanship committee will be at all venues seeking outstanding fair play The Sportsmanship pin can be awarded to athletes, coaches or spectators The Sportsmanship Criteria are as follows: 1 Self-control and exemplary demeanor on the court 2 The manner in which athlete treats opponent on the court 3 Mature behaviour off the court 4 Respect for timers, court maintenance personnel, draw-master, other coaches and tournament officials 5 Individual exhibits passion, selflessness and fun Official Game Shuttle: The official game shuttle will be the Yonex Mavis 300 Coaches Hospitality Room: A hospitality room for coaches will be available throughout the tournament at the both venues: staff room on CCH Campus West and PE 264 at the U of L Refreshments, breakfast, lunch, supper and light snacks will be available at both venues On CCH Campus West, the hospitality room will be managed by CCH Foods and at the U of L, the hospitality room will be managed by London Road AWARDS TEAM AND SCHOOL SCHOOL TEAM AWARDS 1A Betty Peters Award 2A Sheila Iversen Award 3A Al McDougall Award 4A Roy Gouchey Award These awards are presented to the school with the greatest number of points in all twenty-one (21) events Points are awarded on the basis of one (1) point per match win This includes all match wins in the singles qualifying round, round robin play, and playoffs First Aid: Even though student Sports Medicine trainers will be present at CCH Campus West and First Aid Response Personnel at the U of L, teams must bring their own medical supplies Emergency Action Plan (EAP): The EAP for the UofL venue will be issued by UofL Sport and Recreation Services Documentation will be available at the draw desk, with Alex Fong as the Event Manager and First-Aid provider The EAP for the CCHW venue will be as follows: In the event that a fire alarm is activated, the Event Manager or highest representative of Catholic Central High School will act as Emergency Senior He/She shall will identify him/herself and instruct two adult volunteers (preferable teacher) to lead all persons in a given area out of and to the following areas: 1 Main Gymnasium outside the North doors and muster in the football field north of the school, with the other group 2 Cafeteria/Coaches Rooms Outside the North building doors in the main area and muster in the football field north of the school, with the other group

11 Once outside, adult volunteers will immediately instruct everyone to remain as a group at all time and take a head count of the number of persons in the group Report this number to Joanne Polec at as well as your Emergency Senior The Emergency Senior will be the last person to leave the building, once all washrooms, team rooms, gymnasium and hallways have been cleared and doors have been closed Establish contact with the Fire Department and once the all-clear is given, instruct everyone to enter the building In the event of an injury, contact the Drawdesk and they will inform Joanne Polec, who will inform the first aid representatives to take action Any first aid contact beyond band-aids and ice for general aches and pains must be documented in an incident report form and submitted to Joanne Polec Safety Guidelines: No practicing in hallways or gathering areas Please refrain from littering, smoking and horseplay at all venues Please use recycle and garbage bins provided Please NO food or drink (besides water) in both gymnasiums Do not play with a racquet that is cracked or lacks a proper grip Do not play with a shuttle that is broken or deformed ASAA strongly recommends the use of protective eye wear for all athletes Do not wear jewellery Due to the high nature of stop and starting in badminton, ensure proper footwear is worn Do not enter adjacent courts to retrieve or play a shuttle while play in that court is in progress The front-court player should avoid facing their partner during rallies When possible, wait for play to stop before walking behind or beside courts When walking around courts, always be aware of where the active players are All players, coaches and spectators are to act respectfully and responsibly at all times

13 ASAA Badminton Policy 1 The rules governing badminton shall be the laws of badminton as adopted by the International Badminton Federation and the Canadian Badminton Association 2 A zone team shall consist of: - 6 boys and 6 girls to play Singles (two in each Junior, Intermediate, and Senior) - 6 boys and 6 girls to play Doubles (one team in each of Junior, Intermediate, and Senior) - 3 boys and 3 girls to play Mixed Doubles (one team in each of Junior, Intermediate, and Senior) Age categories are: Junior under 16 before September 1 of that school year Intermediate under 17 before September 1 of that school year Senior under 19 before September 1 of that school year An athlete may opt to play at an older age level but may play in only one event 3 A The top 4 seeds will be based on ABA ranking B In the intermediate and senior events, the next 4 or fewer seeds will be based on ASAA provincial results in Category 1 from the previous year Only the top four finishers from the previous year will be used here C Any remaining zone first place finishers will be drawn randomly to fill the next spaces on the list D The remaining zone runner-ups will be drawn randomly to fill the remaining spaces on the list Two players from the same zone will not be placed against each other in the qualifying round and will not be in the same round robin during regular play 4 All winners of opening round Singles matches are placed in Category 1 and losers are placed in Category 2 for the remainder of the competition Competitors in Category 1 and 2 Singles, as well as Doubles and Mixed Doubles, will play a two division round robin ie: each Category 1 girl in Division A shall play a match (best of 3 games) against each of the other three girls in Division A In Singles, Division A and Division B players will be determined by their position in the seeded Competition Draw Division A from the top half and Division B from the bottom half A All two way ties for first and second place in the round robin will be determined by the result of the match between the two tied players (teams) B In a 3 way tie for first place, the teams will be ranked 1, 2, and 3 based firstly on games won minus games lost and secondly on points won minus points lost The 2nd and 3rd ranked team will then play one game to 21 points which will determine 2nd place in the round robin C In a 3 way tie for second place, the teams will be ranked 1, 2, and 3 as described in B above The 2nd and 3rd ranked team will play one game to 21 points to determine who will play the 1st ranked team one game to 21 points which will then determine 2nd place in the round robin At the end of the two divisional round robins, the top two finishers in each of the division A and B will enter the playoff round First place in division A will play second place in division B while first place in division B will play second place in division A The winners will play off for the gold and silver medals while the losers will play off for the bronze (all playoffs will be matches) 5 An annual rotation system (to be set up by the Badminton Commissioner) will rotate the zones between divisions A and B in Doubles and Mixed Doubles 6 All Doubles and Mixed Doubles players will play a minimum of 3 matches (6 to 9 games) and a maximum of 5 matches (10 15 games) Single players will play an additional opening round match to determine their Category for the remainder of the competition 7 The winning school in each classification, A, 2A, 3A, and 4A shall be the school with the greatest number of points awarded on the basis of one point per match win This includes all match wins in the singles qualifying round, round robin play and playoffs In the event of a tie between two or more schools, the winning school will be determined firstly by total matches won minus total matches lost and secondly by total games won minus total games lost If the tie remains, it will stand 8 All players/teams are expected to monitor the progress of play in the gymnasium to which they are assigned Players/teams that do not report to the gymnasium officials within 5 minutes of being called will forfeit the match in question 9 Dress Code Athletes must compete in a uniform that distinguishes their school or zone Uniforms contrary to this rule will be considered illegal When playing doubles, the uniforms shall match Clothing with offensive language or symbols will not be allowed Shorts should be worn during play No hats or dew rags shall be worn during competition or warm-up Venue coordinators will instruct players to change if not in compliance with dress code 10 The brand of Badminton shuttle to be used at the ASAA Provincial Competition shall be the Yonex Mavis 300
