Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m., and the game will be televised on the ACC Network. NOTING VIRGINIA IN ACC OPENERS Virginia begins its 63rd season competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference on Saturday at Duke. Virginia holds a all-time record in conference openers. This is the eighth season over the last 11 years that Virginia will open ACC play on the road. During that span only the 2007 (Duke), 2010 (Florida State) and 2014 (Louisville) seasons did UVA start ACC play at Scott Stadium. UVA last opened conference play at Duke in VIRGINIA VS. DUKE Virginia leads the series with Duke by a narrow margin. Virginia s victory over Duke at Scott Stadium in 2015 snapped a three-game winning streak in the series by the Blue Devils. After UVA won eight games in a row in the series from , Duke has won six of the last eight meetings. At one time Duke had a 12-game advantage in the series, but by winning 23 of the last 33 meetings since 1982, UVA now leads the all-time series by one win over the Blue Devils. Virginia and Duke have met every season since UVA quarterback Kurt Benkert passed for a UVA single-game record 421 yards on 27-of-43 passing. His five touchdowns are tied for No. 2 in the UVA annals for most touchdown passes in a game and it was the most since 2002 when current Atlanta Falcon Matt Schaub lit up Akron for five scoring strikes. Benkert is one of five Cavaliers to throw for five touchdowns in a game. Of UVA s 13 touchdown drives this season, 12 of them have come in 3:50 or less, including all seven against Central Michigan on Sept. 24. With 161 career receptions, running back Taquan Mizzell needs one reception to move into a secondplace tie with Kris Burd on the all-time receptions list at UVA. #HOOSRISING: BY THE NUMBERS VS QB Kurt Benkert broke a UVA game record with 421 passing yards against Central Michigan. The junior was 27-of-43 passing with five touchdowns. There were zero TFLs recorded against the UVA offense in the CMU game. That was a first since 1996 when the Chippewas last came to Scott Stadium. TB Taquan Mizzell has a reception in 37 straight games, which is tied for the third-longest active streak in the nation. No other announcements regarding player injuries will be made until the end of practice on Thursday or two days prior to the next football game (Tuesday for Thursday game, Thursday for Saturday). Here is some of the terminology that contributes to UVA s culture. Grounds: The term used by students, faculty and alumni to refer to the University dating as far back as Thomas Jefferson. Campus is never used. First Year, Second Year, Third Year, Fourth Year: Instead of freshman, sophomore, junior, senior. Why you may ask? To be a senior implies that a person has reached the final phase of learning, a feat that Thomas Jefferson believed to be impossible, arguing instead that education is a life-long process. Commonwealth: Virginia is one of four constituent states of the United States of America that officially uses the name Commonwealth instead of the word state in all references. The other three commonwealths are Kentucky, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. UNIVERSITY NICKNAMES Virginia s athletics teams have been accompanied by a somewhat confusing array of nicknames. The most prominent and widely accepted of these monikers are Cavaliers, Wahoos and Hoos. Although the terms Cavaliers, Wahoos and Hoos are used almost interchangeably to refer to University teams and players, Cavaliers is more often used by the media, while Wahoos and Hoos are frequently used by Virginia students and fans. Legend has it that Washington & Lee baseball fans dubbed the Virginia players Wahoos during the fiercely contested rivalry that existed between the two in-state schools in the 1890s. By 1940, Wahoos was in general use around Grounds to denote University students or events relating to them. The abbreviated Hoos sprang up later in student newspapers and has gained growing popularity in recent years. THE CAVALIER MASCOT The costumed Cavalier with a large character head debuted during Virginia s 1984 football season and has remained the official mascot of the University. The first documented Cavalier on horseback was Francis Bell, a Virginia student from Dublin, Va., in Bell rode onto the field dressed as Cavaliers for Virginia s home football game with Harvard on the afternoon of October 11. The Cavalier on horseback returned as the University s mascot in The UVA Polo Club provided both the horse and rider. However, the mounted Cavalier and his horse parted company in 1974 with the inception of AstroTurf at Scott Stadium. The mounted Cavalier made its return in the Florida Citrus Bowl at the end of the 1989 football season. Due to its instant popularity, the Cavalier on horseback returned the following season on a regular basis and continues to lead the Virginia football team onto the field at the beginning of all home games. UNIVERSITY COLORS Orange and blue were adopted as the University of Virginia s official athletic colors at a mass student meeting in UVA athletic teams had previously worn silver gray and cardinal red, but those colors did not stand out on muddy football fields, prompting a student movement to change them. One of the students attending the mass meeting was Allen Potts, a star athlete who played on Virginia s first football team in Potts showed up at the meeting wearing a navy blue-and-orange scarf that he had acquired during a summer boating expedition at Oxford University. Orange and blue were chosen as the official athletic colors after one of Potts fellow students pulled the scarf off Potts neck and, waving it to the crowd, yelled, How will this do? UVA later served as the inspiration for schools like Auburn and Florida when they selected school colors. WAH-HOO-WAH The origin of Wah-hoo-wah is uncertain. The cheer was used to root on Virginia teams as early as 1890 and may have been borrowed from Dartmouth College, whose athletics teams were once known as the Indians. Legend attributes the yell to Natalie Floyd Otey, who sang the ballad Where er You Are, There Shall My Love Be at Charlottesville s Levy Opera House in The predominantly student audience noticed that Otey warbled the first three words of the song between each of the stanzas and decided to join in the refrain. By evening s end, goes the legend, the crowd had corrupted Where er You Are into Wahhoo-wah. The Levy Opera House stands at the corner of High Street and Park Street and has since been renovated into an office building. 3

BLUE DEVILS The Cavaliers have put up some impressive offensive performances against Duke in recent games. TEAM COMPARISON Last Meeting Matt Johns passed for a career-high 344 yards and two touchdowns as Virginia held off a late Duke rally to win at Scott Stadium the last time these two teams met. Duke rallied from a 22-point fourth-quarter deficit and drove inside the Virginia 20 in the final minute behind a 49-yard pass from backup quarterback Parker Boehme to Anthony Nash. But on fourth down, Wilfred Wahee batted away Boehme s pass attempt to Nash in the end zone to seal the victory. Taquan Mizzell had 104 total yards and three touchdowns and caught five passes to set a school record for receptions by a running back in a season. Mizzell s first touchdown, a 3-yard run late in the first quarter, gave the Cavaliers a surprising 21-0 lead after they converted on two Duke turnovers. Previously, Darious Latimore s end-zone interception of Thomas Sirk s pass set up a four-play, 80-yard drive capped by wide receiver T.J. Thorpe s 26-yard touchdown run. Duke fought back in the fourth quarter with Boehme s 12-yard pass to T.J. Rahming. Boehme, who had replaced Sirk at quarterback, added a touchdown on a 1-yard sneak to bring the Blue Devils within one score at with 7:24 remaining. But Latimore broke up a fourth-down pass to end one of Duke s late possessions and Wahee s deflection in the final minute secured the win. Benkert threw for 421 passing yards last weekend against Central Michigan, snapping Verica s 2010 record of 417 passing yards in a game that came at Duke. Benkert threw five touchdowns, making him the fith Cavalier to throw five touchdowns in a game and the first since Matt Schaub in 2002 against Akron. The five touchowns is tied for second-most by a UVA quarterback in a game. UVA SHUTS THE DOOR ON CMU WITH 21-0 RUN IN THE FOURTH QUARTER UVA opened up the win over Central Michigan with a 28-0 run over the game s first 19:26. CMU then held UVA scoreless for a period of 30:21 to tie the game, 28-28, with 10:13 remaining. Virginia then sprinted on a 21-0 run over 6:08 in the fourth quarter, taking a commanding lead. VIRGINIA OFFENSIVE LINE SAYS NOTHING FOR YOU The UVA offensive line yielded zero tackles for loss against Central Michigan as the Cavaliers amassed 569 yards of total offense. It was the first time since 1996 that UVA yielded zero TFLs, ironically the last time the Chippewas came to Scott Stadium. It was also the first game since the 2015 Georgia Tech game UVA didn t give up a sack. UVA S OFFENSIVE DRIVES AGAINST CENTRAL MICHIGAN All seven of UVA s touchdown drives against Central Michigan were completed in 3:50 or less. Two of UVA s touchdown drives against Central Michigan were under 37 seconds, while five were under 2:15. UVA s 99-yard touchdown drive against Central Michigan was a program record. The previous record was 98 yards, done various times. UVA s longest touchdown drive against Central Michigan was completed in 11 plays and 3:50, the longest touchdown drive play and time wise in the game for UVA. He shares the team lead with Keeon Johnson with three receiving touchdowns. Zaccheaus is coming off a career day against Central Michigan where he made eight catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns. His 82-yard touchdown reception from Kurt Benkert is the 17th longest reception in the nation this season and the 13th longest touchdown reception in UVA program history. Zaccheaus came to UVA as a running back, but switched to wide receiver as a true freshman to fill a need in The versatile Zaccheaus also ran back kicks in 2015 and is on the preseason watch list for the Paul Hornung Award, the national honor given to the most versatile player. Olamide is Nigerian for the blessing has come. BLANDING AND KISER PICKING UP IN 2016 WHERE THEY LEFT OFF IN 2015 Micah Kiser (10.0) is leading the ACC in tackles per game and is No. 19 in the nation. Quin Blanding (9.8) is No. 2 in the ACC in tackles per game. At Oregon and UConn Blanding and Kiser were identical in tackle production. The duo has led the team at then-no. 24 Oregon and at UConn in tackles. At Oregon both finished with nine stops, with an identical five solo stops and four assisted tackles. At UConn it was the same thing, both had 11 tackles with an identical eight solo stops and three assisted tackles. The difference was the opening game against Richmond when Kiser led all players with 14 tackles. Blanding led all players against Central Michigan with 12 tackles. Not much is different from 2015 as Kiser finished the season No. 1 in the ACC in tackles with 9.8 tackles per game. Blanding has finished 2014 and 2015 No. 2 in the ACC in tackles. BLANDING DOUBLES UP THE TACKLES UVA s Quin Blanding owns 14 double-digit tackle games over 28 collegiate games. KISER DOUBLES UP THE TACKLES Micah Kiser owns nine double-digit tackle games over his 16 career starts. Kiser has recorded 157 tackles over his 16 career starts, which is every game since the start of the 2015 season. Kiser played in all 12 games a redshirt freshman, mostly on special teams when he shared the UVA team lead with nine special teams tackles. JOHNSON EMERGES AS BIG TARGET FOR BENKERT Senior WR Keeon Johnson has 21 receptions for 218 yards and three touchdowns. His 21 receptions are already more than his output in 2014 and Johnson only recorded 13 receptions each of those seasons after grabbing 20 catches as a freshman in eight games. Johnson s two touchdown catches through the first two games of 2016 equaled his career total entering He now has five career touchdowns. RUSHING ATTACK IS PICKING UP After the running backs rushed for only 35 yards as a team against Richmond in the season opener, UVA received a big performance from its ground game at then-no. 24 Oregon on Sept. 10. Albert Reid s 126-yard rushing game led UVA s 220 combined rushing yards from its three backs against Oregon. Taquan Mizzell added 48 rushing yards and Jordan Ellis added 46 in the loss at Oregon. At Oregon UVA s running backs gained 220 yards on 31 carries for an average of 7.1 yards per rush, while also scoring two touchdowns. At UConn UVA s running backs gained 139 yards on 27 carries for an average of 5.1 yards per rush, while scoring UVA s lone touchdown in the game. Mizzell had the best yards per rush rate of three Cavalier rushers, finishing with 6.0 yards per carry. Reid had a team-best 73 yards with a 4.9 yards per rush rate at the Cavaliers only touchdown. Mack became the first true freshman to start at linebacker in a season opener since Ahmad Brooks in Brooks made seven tackles and broke up two passes in his debut against Duke on Aug. 30, EARNED NOT GIVEN UVA head coach Bronco Mendenhall has brought an Earned Not Given mentality to the Virginia Football program. When winter workouts started, players wore all black and nothing affixed with a Virginia logo. Players had to earn the right to wear the blue and orange. Then had to earn the right to wear the Virginia logo. Everything from access to the locker room, to numbers was part of the new Earned Not Given mentality. Even when it came to practice, players had to earn the next period, repeating the previous period as many times as needed until the next period was earned. TASK UNIT LEADERS Bronco Mendenhall has entrusted the team with a leadership body with six units. With a military flair, there are six task unit leaders. The coaching staff selected the six task leaders. Each unit consists of players, drafted by the task unit leaders themselves. Each task unit leader from his team names an assistant leader. A lot of activities over the summer was accomplished through the task units. Accountability and discipline were two really big emphasis. It was the task unit leaders that determined the draft order when it came time to select numbers. RB Jordan Ellis received the first pick and NT Donte Wilkins received the second pick. PLAYERS EARN THEIR NUMBERS On the night of Saturday, Aug. 27, inside the locker room at Scott Stadium, 60 players earned their numbers in a special ceremony. Eleven more Cavaliers earned their numbers on the morning of Sept. 1, prior to practice. On Sept. 15, prior to practice, OLB Matt Terrell (Fr.) earned his number to bring the total number of players whom have earned numbers to 72. He is 28 punts shy of the 100 career punt minimum to rank on the career list at UVA. Currently Conte s 44.5 yards per punt average would rank No. 1 in the UVA annals, topping Russ Henderson s 43.3 yards per punt mark. BREAKING IN A NEW PLACEKICKER UVA attempted its first field goal of 2016 in game three at UConn. Alex Furbank connected on a 23-yard field goal in his first career play of football at any level. Furbank walked-on to the UVA team during fall camp after being on the soccer roster at DIII Randolph-Macon in 2015, but did not appear in any games. Furbank is now the only kicker on the UVA roster that has attempted any field goals in college. Dylan Sims has appeared on kickoffs since the third game of the 2013 season, but never has attempted a field goal. The last time Virginia entered a season without a player with on its roster that had attempted a field goal attempt in his college career was 2012, when the two placekickers were Drew Jarrett and Ian Frye. Benkert, a transfer from East Carolina, became (vs. Richmond) the first Cavalier quarterback to start his UVA debut since 1977 when Bryan Shumock started the season opener against NC State. 15 2016 VIRGINIA FOOTBALL BRONCO MENDENHALL Bronco Mendenhall Head Coach First Season Bronco Mendenhall was named Virginia s head football coach on Dec. 4, He served as the head football coach at Brigham Young University for 11 years before joining the Cavalier program. Mendenhall, Virginia s 40th head football coach, has compiled an overall record of in his 11 seasons as head coach at BYU to rank 12th in total wins among all FBS teams during that time. Mendenhall also ranks 13th in winning percentage (.697) among all active coaches with at least five years of FBS experience, and he ranks 10th among active coaches with at least 10 years of experience. In the three seasons prior to Mendenhall becoming the head coach at BYU, the Cougars compiled an overall record of Over the last 11 years, the Cougars are one of only 11 programs to advance to a bowl game each season (includes the 2015 season). BYU is joined by Alabama, Boise State, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, Oregon, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin on that list. Among those 11 teams, only Florida State has achieved more bowl wins (seven) than BYU s six bowl game victories. BYU football student-athletes have earned freshman All-America recognition in eight of the past 10 seasons. More than 60 BYU players have signed with NFL teams since Mendenhall arrived in Provo, including defensive end Ezekiel Ansah, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft and Kyle Van Noy, the No. 40 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Under Mendenhall, the Cougars tied for seventh among all FBS programs for the most Academic All-America citations over the last decade and BYU tops all FBS programs with the most selections (39) to the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society (recognizing starters and significant contributors finishing their eligibility with a 3.2 GPA or better over their college career) since the program began in The success of Mendenhall s leadership approach in running the BYU football program has been highlighted in a management book, Running Into the Wind: Bronco Mendenhall -- 5 Strategies for Building a Successful Team, written by Alyson Von Feldt and Paul Gustavson, a leading management consultant specializing in leadership development and organizational design. Mendenhall was elected in 2013 to the American Football Coaches Association Board of Trustees as the District 8 Representative and also serves on the AFCA Ethics Committee. In his first year in 2005 after taking over a program coming off three losing seasons, Mendenhall led BYU to a 6-5 regular-season record and earned an invitation to the Maaco Bowl Las Vegas -- the team s first postseason bowl appearance in three seasons. The Cougars finished tied for second in the MWC with a 5-3 league ledger. Following the 2006 season, Mendenhall was named the American Football Coaches Association Region IV Coach of the Year. In addition, the Football Writers Association of America named Mendenhall one of nine finalists for the prestigious Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award. A dominant defense led BYU to its seventh winning season in as many years as the BYU football team finished the 2012 season with eight wins, a program-best fourth consecutive bowl victory and the No. 3 defense in the nation. With an 8-5 record, BYU claimed its sixth season with as least eight wins under Mendenhall s eight-year head coaching tenure. Incredibly consistent all year long, BYU finished the year ranked No. 3 in total defense, allowing just yards per game. The Cougars ended the season ranked in the top four in five major defensive categories. Mendenhall has served as the BYU s defensive coordinator for much of his tenure as the head coach. 16 2016 VIRGINIA FOOTBALL FUN FACTS FUN FACTS UVA S EARLY FOOTBALL HISTORY AT LAMBETH FIELD The colonnades at Lambeth Field turn 103 in The playing surface at Lambeth Field hosted Virginia football from 1902 until Scott Stadium opened up in the midst of the 1931 season on Oct. 15, Lambeth Field is the location where the American game of football that we know today, played from youth league all the way up to the NFL, was first played. It all started in 1909 with the death of UVA s Archer Christian. Christian died in 1909 as a result of injuries sustained in a football game at Georgetown on Nov. 13, Christian s death highlighted 29 football related deaths during the 1909 season. Papers from all over the country carried the front-page headline of Christian s death. Former UVA President Edwin A. Alderman and the father of UV athletics, William Lambeth, went to New York City to meet with other presidents and administrators from other big time universities to discuss how they could make the game of football safer. At the time there was legislation happening in Washington to make it illegal to play the game of football in America. A new rules committee that was appointed from that meeting in New York City included Lambeth and the father of American football, Walter Camp. Lambeth noted to the committee, which met almost on a monthly basis, that the two deaths he had seen personally were due to exhaustion. At the time there were no substitutions, if you came out you could no longer return. The original game had a lot of pulling and pushing. Players were not considered down until they really couldn t move under the pile. Lambeth suggested that the game be split into four quarters, totaling 15 minutes a piece and that players could substitute back in. Walter Camp s notes from the committee meetings credit Lambeth, in the margins, with these changes. The committee asked Lambeth to take the new rules back to the University of Virginia and experiment with them during the spring of On the Grounds of the University of Virginia, under the watchful eye of William Lambeth, a new version of American football, divided into four quarters was played for the first time in history. Other notable rules that were played for the first time that spring at Lambeth Field were: seven men required on the line at the time of the snap, players could no longer push or pull the ball carrier and the forward pass could now be made across the line of scrimmage. Virginia football returned to its roots at Lambeth Field during camp in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016, taking part in various scrimmages and practices on the hallowed ground. UVA ATHLETIC TRAINER FOR FOOTBALL IS ONE OF A FEW Virginia s Kelli Pugh is one of 10 women at the FBS level that is their school s sports medicine department s primary care provider for football. 18 2016 VIRGINIA FOOTBALL HONORS/WATCH LISTS DID YOU KNOW? UVA junior Quin Blanding was named by his mother Cory Lee after the movie titled The Mighty Quinn, staring Denzel Washington and Mimi Rogers. It was the first movie she saw following a checkup during her seventh month of pregnancy and the moment held significant meaning to her. At that checkup the doctor s told her they thought they saw a hole in Quin s head and that it appeared to them his cerebrum wasn t connected. Quin was born completely healthy. Cory named him Quin with one n instead of two in recognition of that moment during pregnancy. She knew he will be all right and that he will be the mighty one. Blanding s father, Kevin, played football at NCAA Division II Glenville State (W.Va.) for current Arizona football head coach Rich Rodriguez. When offensive coordinator Robert Anae finished playing football, he returned home to Hawaii and served as the body model for the towering statue of the father of surfing, Duke Kahanamoku, a five-time Olympian. The statue, created by artist Jan Fisher, is right next to the famous Waikiki Beach. Anae was a graduate assistant at Hawaii at the time and the artist needed a model, a surfer that was tall, and he went looking for the tallest surfer on the North Shore. UVA s oldest living football alum, Dr. John Risher, turned 106 years old this year; he also works in the press box on the UVA stats crew on game day.
