Here is some of the terminology that contributes to UVA s culture. Grounds: The term used by students, faculty and alumni to refer to the University dating as far back as Thomas Jefferson. Campus is never used. First Year, Second Year, Third Year, Fourth Year: Instead of freshman, sophomore, junior, senior. Why you may ask? To be a senior implies that a person has reached the final phase of learning, a feat that Thomas Jefferson believed to be impossible, arguing instead that education is a life-long process. Commonwealth: Virginia is one of four constituent states of the United States of America that officially uses the name Commonwealth instead of the word state in all references. The other three commonwealths are Kentucky, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. UNIVERSITY NICKNAMES Virginia s athletics teams have been accompanied by a somewhat confusing array of nicknames. The most prominent and widely accepted of these monikers are Cavaliers, Wahoos and Hoos. Although the terms Cavaliers, Wahoos and Hoos are used almost interchangeably to refer to University teams and players, Cavaliers is more often used by the media, while Wahoos and Hoos are frequently used by Virginia students and fans. Legend has it that Washington & Lee baseball fans dubbed the Virginia players Wahoos during the fiercely contested rivalry that existed between the two in-state schools in the 1890s. By 1940, Wahoos was in general use around Grounds to denote University students or events relating to them. The abbreviated Hoos sprang up later in student newspapers and has gained growing popularity in recent years. THE CAVALIER MASCOT The costumed Cavalier with a large character head debuted during Virginia s 1984 football season and has remained the official mascot of the University. The first documented Cavalier on horseback was Francis Bell, a Virginia student from Dublin, Va., in Bell rode onto the field dressed as Cavaliers for Virginia s home football game with Harvard on the afternoon of October 11. The Cavalier on horseback returned as the University s mascot in The UVA Polo Club provided both the horse and rider. However, the mounted Cavalier and his horse parted company in 1974 with the inception of AstroTurf at Scott Stadium. The mounted Cavalier made its return in the Florida Citrus Bowl at the end of the 1989 football season. Due to its instant popularity, the Cavalier on horseback returned the following season on a regular basis and continues to lead the Virginia football team onto the field at the beginning of all home games. UNIVERSITY COLORS Orange and blue were adopted as the University of Virginia s official athletic colors at a mass student meeting in UVA athletic teams had previously worn silver gray and cardinal red, but those colors did not stand out on muddy football fields, prompting a student movement to change them. One of the students attending the mass meeting was Allen Potts, a star athlete who played on Virginia s first football team in Potts showed up at the meeting wearing a navy blue-and-orange scarf that he had acquired during a summer boating expedition at Oxford University. Orange and blue were chosen as the official athletic colors after one of Potts fellow students pulled the scarf off Potts neck and, waving it to the crowd, yelled, How will this do? UVA later served as the inspiration for schools like Auburn and Florida when they selected school colors. WAH-HOO-WAH The origin of Wah-hoo-wah is uncertain. The cheer was used to root on Virginia teams as early as 1890 and may have been borrowed from Dartmouth College, whose athletics teams were once known as the Indians. Legend attributes the yell to Natalie Floyd Otey, who sang the ballad Where er You Are, There Shall My Love Be at Charlottesville s Levy Opera House in The predominantly student audience noticed that Otey warbled the first three words of the song between each of the stanzas and decided to join in the refrain. By evening s end, goes the legend, the crowd had corrupted Where er You Are into Wahhoo-wah. The Levy Opera House stands at the corner of High Street and Park Street and has since been renovated into an office building. 3

The group of NFL draftees included nine first-round picks. Twenty-one Cavaliers and 22 Hurricanes went on to play in the NFL. UVA FIRST SCHOOL TO ACCOMPLISH THIS FLORIDA FEAT UVA s trip to then-sun Life Stadium in 2011 resulted in the Cavaliers victory. The win set the table for Virginia to become the first program in college football history to win road games at Miami and Florida State in the same season. UVA later won in 2011 at then-no. 23 FSU, UVA was the only team in college football history to accomplish the feat until North Carolina did so in Florida State and Miami have brough eight combined national titles to the Sunshine State. LAST-SECOND HEROICS IN 2012 The 2012 game at Scott Stadium saw last-second heroics by the Cavaliers. Michael Rocco tossed a 10-yard pass to Jake McGee in the back of the end zone with six seconds left to beat Miami, at Scott Stadium. The touchdown capped a 10-point, fourth quarter deficit. Rocco was 29-of-37 for 300 yards and four touchdowns in the win. McGee had four catches for 26 yards including the game-winning score. WR Dominique Terrell had a career day in the 2012 meeting with nine catches for 127 yards. The victory serves as the most recent UVA last-minute win, which means the winning score came with 60 seconds or less remaining in the game. UVA VS. He also scored on an 82-yard scoring strike from Benkert in 2016 against Central Michigan. In UVA s five wins in 2017, Zaccheaus has caught 40 passes for 474 yards and four touchdowns, while also rushing 16 times for 132 yards and one more score. Over the eight wins of the Mendenhall era, Zaccheaus has caught 52 passes for 657 yards and seven touchdowns, which comes out to 12.6 yards per reception. His active reception streak of 26 games is the third longest active streak in the ACC. Zaccheaus became the 37th Cavalier all-time with 1,000 career receiving yards after his 122-yard day against UConn. Zaccheaus also became the 21st Cavalier to reach 100-career receptions in UVA history after grabbing four at Boise State. Zaccheaus 12 receptions against Indiana on Sept. 9 are the sixth most in a single game in UVA history. Olamide is Nigerian for the blessing has come. LEVRONE S LONG TOUCHDOWNS Senior WR Andre Levrone has six touchdown catches for 262 yards, or 43.7 yards per scoring reception. Overall, Levrone is No. 2 in the ACC and No. 8 in the nation with yards per reception. Levrone has 11 receptions of 20 yards or more, the most by a Cavalier since Canaan Severin had 13 in Severin had 14 receptions of 20 yards or more in 2014, while Darius Jennings had 13 in ELLIS BREAKS THROUGH TO SCORE AT LOUISVILLE TB Jordan Ellis rushed for five touchdowns through UVA s first four games, including two at Boise State. However, until his 3-yard rushing score at Louisville last weekend, he had not seen the end zone since Sept. 22 at Boise State on the blue turf. GOAL-2-GO HAS BEEN UVA S SPECIALTY Outside of two turnovers on downs at Pitt, UVA is 14-of-14 on scoring when they are goal-to-go. UVA has scored 11 touchdowns (7 rush, 4 pass) and three field goals when in a goal-to-go situation. More on UVA s goal-to-go situations on page 16. UVA DEFENSE STARTS STRONG UVA s defense has started strong, forcing five three and outs in 10 opening drives. UVA has forced its opponent to a three and out in the last three games. Only Boise State (TD) and Boston College (FG) have scored on its opening drive against UVA and are the only two teams to manage more than two first downs on an opening drive. UVA is No. 16 in the nation and No. 4 in the ACC in three and outs forced per game with 4.7. Of UVA s 131 defensive opportunities this season, 35.9 percent of them were a three and out. JOE REED EXCELS ON KICK RETURN Wide Receiver Joe Reed has returned 25 kicks in 2017 for 723 yards (28.9 yards per return), which is No. 1 in the ACC and No. 10 nationally. Reed is on a current streak of three games in a row where he has had over 100 kick return yards. Reed has seven returns of 30 yards or more. That is the most by a Cavalier since UVA s all-time kick return leader Darius Jennings had seven in Reed and Jennings mark is the most at UVA since Cedric Peerman returned nine kicks in 2005 for 30 yards or more. With only 52 kick returns to his career resume, Reed already ranks No. 5 all-time at UVA in career kick return yards with 1,401. Reed s 723 kick return yards are the second most in a season by a Cavalier, trailing only Khalek Shepherd s single-season program record of 929 in Reed s best game this season was against Georgia Tech when he had a career-high 170 return yards and the program s eighth-longest return which went 92 yards for a touchdown Reed s 25.1 yards per kick return average was No. 3 in the ACC and No. 21 in the nation in Below is where Reed ranks all-time among UVA s top kick returners. 7 2017 VIRGINIA FOOTBALL TEAM NOTES UVA HAS BEEN PLUS IN THE FIELD POSITION BATTLE Virginia has won the field position battle in seven of UVA s 10 games. The Louisville game was the first time UVA lost the battle since losing in back-to-back games against Indiana and UConn. UVA s best field position win was against William & Mary (+16), while the Boise State (+13), Pitt (+13) and Georgia Tech (+10) games have also been in the plus by double digits. See page 26 for more on field position. BENKERT HAS REACHED 21 PASSING TOUCHDOWNS THROUGH 10 GAMES With 21 passing touchdowns, quarterback Kurt Benkert is the first Cavalier in program history to throw for at least 20 touchdowns in multiple seasons. He had 21 last year also. With Benkert reaching 21 passing touchdowns this season, it marks only the eighth time in program history a UVA quarterback has reached the 20-passing touchdown plateau. Benkert s next passing touchdown will break a four-way tie for No. 2 all-time in UVA s single-season record book. Shawn Moore (1990), Bobby Goodman (1992) and Benkert s own finish in 2016 are all tied for No. 2 with 21 passing touchdowns. The program s single-season record for passing touchdowns in a season is 28 by Matt Schaub in Benkert is tied for No. 1 in the ACC (UL, Lamar Jackson) with 21 passing touchdowns and is No. 17 in the nation through 10 games. BENKERT S TOUCHDOWN PASSES With 42 passing touchdowns QB Kurt Benkert is one of 11 active Power 5 quarterbacks to have at least 35 passing touchdowns since the start of the 2016 season. Benkert and 2016 Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson (51) are the only ones from the ACC. Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma), Luke Falk (Washington State), Jake Browning (Washington), Sam Darnold (USC), Drew Lock (Missouri), Mason Rudolph (Oklahoma State), J.T. Barrett (Ohio State), Trace McSorley (Penn State) and Patrick Mahomes (Texas Tech) are the others. BENKERT AND PASSES OF 80+ YARDS At North Carolina on Oct. 14, Kurt Benkert found Olamide Zaccheaus on an 81-yard scoring strike. The touchdown served as the fourth-longest one-play scoring drive in program history and it was Benkert s third career pass of 80 yards or more. In program history, only Benkert and Wayne Schuchts have three career passes of 80 yards or more. Benkert s first two came in 2016 at Duke (84 yards to David Eldridge) and against Central Michigan (82- yard touchdown to Zaccheaus). Schuchts passes were 93 yards (to Nick Merrick, vs. Wake Forest, 1982), 85 yards (to Barry Word, vs. Wake Forest, 1983) and 80 yards (to Quentin Walker, vs. Duke, 1983). COLEMAN GIVES UVA ADDED EDGE IN THE PUNT GAME Junior Lester Coleman sat his first three years on Grounds before making his collegiate debut in the season opener against William & Mary. He sat the last two years behind former first-team All-ACC punter Nicholas Conte. Coleman did not punt in high school until his senior season. He had played defensive line and receiver at Woodberry Forest. His high school needed a punter and because Lester s older brother, James, had walked on to UVA as a punter in 2012, Lester was asked to punt without any experience. Lester s brother, James, redshirted at UVA in 2012 and punted two times over three seasons ( ) before using his fifth year to be the starting punter at Western Michigan last year. Lester Coleman averaged 52.3 yards per punt over his seven punts against Boston College (Oct. 21) to break the single-game UVA punting record. The previous record belonged to Ryan Weigand, who averaged 51.6 yards per punt at Wyoming in Coleman had a long punt of 60 yards against the Eagles and five landed inside the 20, three of which were downed inside the 10. Coleman is No. 3 in the ACC and No. 14 in the nation with a 44.5 yards per punt average. Of his 60 punts, 24 have landed inside the 20 and another 20 have been for 50+ yards. Blount made his first collegiate start at cornerback at Pitt for the injured Juan Thornhill. Blount is the son of former UVA safety, Tony Blount, who played for the Cavaliers from and owns the 11th-longest interception return (63) in program history. ELLIS RUNS HARD FOR THE VIRGINIA OFFENSE TB Jordan Ellis is averaging 5.1 yards per rush on first down through nine games with 10 first downs and one touchdown. Ellis has been a workhorse in short yardage on 3rd and 4th down. On fourth down, Ellis has rushed seven times for four first downs on an average of 1.7 yards per carry. On third down, Ellis has 18 first downs, four touchdowns on 36 rushes. UVA s rushing offensive by Jordan Ellis helped eat clock and secure victory against Duke six weeks ago. Ellis rushed seven times for 33 yards (4.7 per carry) and two first downs in the fourth quarter, helping seal the ACC victory. UVA RECEIVERS HAVE RARE ACCOMPLISHMENT IN 2017 UVA is one of eight schools in all of FBS in 2017 with at least three different players with at least one 100-yard receiving game. UVA is tied for No. 4 in the nation with three. Oklahoma State, who had four receivers go over 100 yards against Pitt this year, is the only other team this season with at least three players in the same game reach the 100-yard receiving mark. HB Olamide Zaccheaus (above) and WR Doni Dowling each passed the 1,000 career receiving threshold against UConn, becoming the 37th and 38th Cavaliers all-time to do so. 7

Doni Dowling (136), Andre Levrone (127) and Olamide Zaccheaus (122) became the first UVA trio to accomplish the milestone in UVA s win over UConn. It was only the 10th time UVA had multiple Cavaliers with at least 100 yards receiving in the same game and the first time since the 2013 Georgia Tech game (Tim Smith, 151 yard & Darius Jennings, 119 yards). Dowling, Levrone and Zaccheaus are only the sixth ACC trio to accomplish the feat since Since 2000, Florida State accomplished the feat twice in 2000 and once in Miami did it in 2012 and Virginia Tech in Year ACC School vs. Opponent Players 2017 Virginia vs. UConn Doni Dowling (136), Andre Levrone (127), Olamide Zaccheaus (122) 2016 Virginia Tech at Pitt Bucky Hodges (145), Isaiah Ford (143), Cam Phillips (109) 2012 Miami vs. South Florida Clive Walford (135), Herb Waters (130), Phillip Dorsett (111) 2005 Florida State vs. The Citadel Chris Davis (125), De Cody Fagg (113), Greg Carr (104) 2000 Florida State vs. Clemson Snoop Minnis (163), Atrews Bell (111), Javon Walker (109) 2000 Florida State at Miami Atrews Bell (146), Snoop Minnis (145), Anquan Boldin (108) UVA MAKES A LITTLE HISTORY AT BOISE STATE UVA s win at Boise State on Sept. 22 created a little niche in history for the Cavaliers. It was UVA s first win on a Friday since Nov. 10, 1939 when UVA beat Washington & Lee, 7-0. It was UVA s first non-conference road win since 2011 (at Indiana). UVA is now all-time on Fridays in the regular season. UVA handed Boise State its first double-digit loss at home since Sept. 8, 2001 vs. Washington State, which was a triumph. UVA snapped Boise State s 32-game regular season non-conference home winning streak, which dated back to the 2001 Washington State game. Boise State lost by 19 points at home to Virginia. In its 102 previous home games, Boise State lost 4 games by a combined 17 points. It was UVA s first win west of the Mississippi River since winning at BYU in BENKERT BREAKS UVA SINGLE-GAME PASSING/TOTAL OFFENSE RECORD QB Kurt Benkert was 30-of-40 for a career-high 455 passing yards against UConn on Sept. 16. He broke his own UVA single-game passing record (421) that he set last season against Central Michigan. Benkert s 455 passing yards against UConn are the most in the ACC this season for a game and ranks No. 16 among performances in the FBS this season. UVA has had a quarterback throw for over 400 yards only three times in program history and Benkert has done it twice. Marc Verica was the first Cavalier to throw for at least 400 yards in a game in 2010 when he threw for 417 at Duke. Benkert also broke Verica s record for total offense in a game with 465 yards of total offense. Verica s record was 413 at Duke in BLANDING AND KISER ANCHOR THE DEFENSE ILB Micah Kiser (10.6) and FS Quin Blanding (9.6) currently rank No. 1 and No. 2 in the ACC in tackles. This is nothing new for the duo as they finished No. 1 and No. 2 in the ACC in tackles in 2015 and Kiser ranks No. 7 in the nation in tackles in 2017, while Blanding ranks No. 18 in the nation. In 2016 Kiser (11.2) led the ACC in tackles and finished No. 4 nationally. Blanding (10.0) finished No. 2 in the ACC in tackles for the third year in a row and No. 9 nationally. Kiser (9.75) and Blanding (9.58) also finished No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the ACC in tackles in Since the ACC started tracking tackle leaders in 1990, no previous tandem of tacklers has led the league in tackles for two consecutive seasons until Kiser and Blanding. Blanding, who also finished No. 2 in the ACC in tackles in 2014 (10.25), is the only player in ACC history to finish second in tackles for three straight seasons. The only ACC player since 1990 to lead the league in tackles for three consecutive seasons is Boston College s Luke Kuechly ( ), now of the NFL s Carolina Panthers. BLANDING AND KISER GET HELP ON DEFENSE Despite ranking No. 1 and No. 2 in the ACC in tackles, FS Quin Blanding and ILB Micah Kiser are getting solid help on defense as UVA has three of the ACC s Top 10 tacklers. ILB Jordan Mack is No. 6 in the ACC with 8.8 tackles per game. BLANDING DOUBLES UP THE TACKLES UVA s Quin Blanding has 23 double-digit tackle games over 46 collegiate games. Blanding has had six double-digit tackle games in each of his first three seasons. Blanding has 454 career tackles, 9.8 per game. Last season, TB Taquan Smoke Mizzell became the first player in ACC History with 1,500 career receiving and 1,500 career rushing yards. Mizzell is a current member of the Chicago Bears. CROSS IS A TRIPLE-THREAT Redshirt freshmen De Vante Cross has played offense, defense and special teams in the same game twice this season, doing so against Duke and Boston College. Prior to Cross, the last time UVA had a player accomplish that feat was Vic Hall in 2009, when he did so in numerous games, the last time coming against Virginia Tech. Against Boston College Cross saw his most time on defense, notching one tackle. He also rushed once for 13 yards out of the wildcat formation. Recruited as a quarterback, Cross has seen time in the wildcat and at wide receiver. 8

9 2017 VIRGINIA FOOTBALL TEAM NOTES DOWLING HONORS TIM HARRIS WR Doni Dowling moved from No. 7 to No. 5 prior to the Indiana game to honor CB Tim Harris. Wearing No. 5 since his arrival on Grounds in 2013, Harris had a season-ending injury in the opener against William & Mary. Dowling and Harris have been lifelong friends, as well as teammates at Richmond s Varina High School. VIRGINIA FOOTBALL TO WEAR #HOOSTOGETHER PATCHES ON UNIFORMS IN 2017 In the aftermath of the events that took place in Charlottesville this summer, the Virginia athletics department initiated the #HoosTogether campaign on social media in an effort to unite our community in support of love, diversity and inclusion. During the academic year, all UVA sports programs will incorporate a #HoosTogether patch on their uniforms or equipment. It is UVA s hope the patches serve as a reminder of what can be accomplished when we are united behind a common goal and we hope this effort continues to help bring our community together. HAMM RUSHES FOR A TOUCHDOWN IN FIVE STRAIGHT SEASONS After his five-yard rushing score against UConn, TB Daniel Hamm has rushed for at least one touchdown in five straight seasons. Hamm becomes the first Cavalier to rush for at least one touchdown in five straight seasons. With available records dating back to 2004, no ACC player has rushed for at least one touchdown in five straight seasons. Hamm played in two games as a true freshman in 2013 before being hurt at Pitt and receiving a medical hardship. In his collegiate debut, he set a UVA record for most rushing yards in a college debut with 136 against VMI. Hamm also rushed for two touchdowns against the Keydets in Hamm has six career rushing touchdowns. REINKENSMEYER STARTS OPENER AT LEFT TACKLE, SHIFTS TO CENTER Dillon Reinkensmeyer was the first freshman, true or redshirt, to start a season-opening game on the offensive line for UVA since R-Fr. Will Barker started at RT in 2006 vs. Pitt. Reinkensmeyer is the first freshman, redshirt or true, to start a season-opening game at LT since D Brickashaw Ferguson (true freshman) in 2002 vs. Colorado State. Reinkensmeyer did not appeared at left tackle again until the Pitt game, despite receiving the highest grade on the offensive line against the Tribe. He played most of the second half at center against Indiana and from the UConn game through the Pitt game, started at center. Reinkensmeyer returned to left tackle for the injured Jack English against at Pitt and against Georgia Tech. SEVENTEEN TRUE FRESHMEN HAVE PLAYED IN 2017 Seventeen UVA true freshmen have played in 2017, which ranks No. 4 in the nation entering week No. 10. In fact, no UVA kicker or punter had appeared in a college game. Virginia, Arizona State and UAB were the only programs in the nation that entered 2017 with a kicker or a punter on its roster with zero collegiate experience. Virginia was one of six schools in the nation that had zero career collegiate field goal attempts and punts among the kickers on its roster entering Arizona State, Georgia Tech, Hawaii, Troy and UAB are the other schools. This was the the second year in a row UVA has entered a season without a kicker that had attempted a field goal in college. Punter Lester Coleman and placekicker A.J. Mejia both made debuts against William & Mary in the season-opening win. Mejia is 8-of-10 on field goals and 32-of-32 PATs. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium, with its unique architectural design, scenic setting on the University s Grounds and exceptional sight lines, is one of the nation s finest college football settings. Opened in 1931, Scott Stadium might be one of the oldest campus college football stadiums in the nation, but you could never tell from its appearance. Numerous upgrades and expansions make it a modern home for the Cavaliers and their fans. Scott Stadium was the gift of Frederic William Scott and Elisabeth Strother Scott, and was dedicated to the memory of his parents, Frederic Robert Scott and Frances Branch Scott. Virginia played its dedication game at Scott Stadium on Oct. 15, 1931 against the Virginia Military Institute before a then-capacity crowd of 22,000. Prior to that season, the Cavaliers staged their home games at the University s Lambeth Field. Virginia has played 463 games in the historic venue. 17 2017 VIRGINIA FOOTBALL BRONCO MENDENHALL Bronco Mendenhall Head Coach Second Season Bronco Mendenhall is in his second season as Virginia s head football coach after being named the program s 40th head coach on Dec. 4, In Mendenhall s first season on Grounds he oversaw a secondary that boasted first-team All-ACC honoree and All- American, Quin Blanding. Blanding finished the season No. 2 in the ACC in tackles for the third year in a row with 120 stops. Inside linebacker Micah Kiser, an All-American and first-team All- ACC honoree, thrived to lead the ACC in tackles for the second year in a row with 134, which is tied with former Cavalier great Wali Rainer for fourth-most in a single season in program history. Kiser was also a second-team CoSIDA Academic All-American, becoming the first Cavalier since Tiki Barber in 1996 to earn both academic and athletic All-America honors in the same season. Offensively, in Mendenhall s first season, Taquan Mizzell became the first player in ACC history to record at least 1,500 career rushing and 1,500 career receiving yards. UVA quarterback Kurt Benkert set a couple of passing marks in UVA s new offense, including a program record for passing yards in a game with 421 against Central Michigan, which was only the second time in program history a UVA quarterback surpassed 400 passing yards in a game. Benkert reached 1,000 passing yards in four games and 2,000 passing yards in eight games, setting a program record for fastest to that standard in a season. Mendenhall came to Charlottesville after 11 years as the head coach at Brigham Young University. In his 11 seasons, from , Mendenhall compiled an overall record of at BYU to rank 12th in total wins among all FBS teams during that time. In the three seasons prior to Mendenhall becoming the head coach at BYU, the Cougars compiled an overall record of Over the last 11 years, the Cougars are one of only 11 programs to advance to a bowl game each season (includes the 2015 season). BYU is joined by Alabama, Boise State, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, Oregon, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin on that list. Among those 11 teams, only Florida State has achieved more bowl wins (seven) than BYU s six bowl game victories. BYU football student-athletes have earned freshman All-America recognition in eight of the past 10 seasons. More than 60 BYU players have signed with NFL teams since Mendenhall arrived in Provo, including defensive end Ezekiel Ansah, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft and Kyle Van Noy, the No. 40 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Under Mendenhall, the Cougars tied for seventh among all FBS programs for the most Academic All-America citations over the last decade and BYU tops all FBS programs with the most selections (39) to the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society (recognizing starters and significant contributors finishing their eligibility with a 3.2 GPA or better over their college career) since the program began in The success of Mendenhall s leadership approach in running the BYU football program has been highlighted in a management book, Running Into the Wind: Bronco Mendenhall -- 5 Strategies for Building a Successful Team, written by Alyson Von Feldt and Paul Gustavson, a leading management consultant specializing in leadership development and organizational design. Mendenhall was elected in 2013 to the American Football Coaches Association Board of Trustees as the District 8 Representative and also serves on the AFCA Ethics Committee. Following the 2006 season, Mendenhall was named the American Football Coaches Association Region IV Coach of the Year. In addition, the Football Writers Association of America named Mendenhall one of nine finalists for the prestigious Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award. A dominant defense led BYU to its seventh winning season in as many years as the BYU football team finished the 2012 season with eight wins, a program-best fourth consecutive bowl victory and the No. 3 defense in the nation. With an 8-5 record, BYU claimed its sixth season with as least eight wins under Mendenhall s eight-year head coaching tenure. Incredibly consistent all year long, BYU finished the year ranked No. 3 in total defense, allowing just yards per game. The Cougars ended the season ranked in the top four in five major defensive categories. Mendenhall has served as the BYU s defensive coordinator for much of his tenure as the head coach. He returned to a full-time role with the defense again in During his tenure in Provo, the Cougars have consistently fielded one of the nation s strongest defenses. Mendenhall s defense excels at keeping opponents out of the end zone. Entering the 2015 season, they averaged a No. 20 national ranking in scoring defense while he oversees the defense, including three top-10 ratings. 20 2017 VIRGINIA FOOTBALL HONORS/WATCH LISTS DID YOU KNOW? UVA senior Quin Blanding was named by his mother Cory Lee after the movie entitled The Mighty Quinn, staring Denzel Washington and Mimi Rogers. It was the first movie she saw following a checkup during her seventh month of pregnancy and the moment held significant meaning to her. At that checkup the doctors told her they thought they saw a hole in Quin s head and that it appeared to them his cerebrum wasn t connected. Quin was born completely healthy. Cory named him Quin with one n instead of two in recognition of that moment during pregnancy. She knew he will be all right and that he will be the mighty one. Blanding s father, Kevin, played football at NCAA Division II Glenville State (W.Va.) for current Arizona football head coach Rich Rodriguez. When offensive coordinator Robert Anae finished playing football, he returned home to Hawaii and served as the body model for the towering stature of the father of surfing, Duke Kahanamoku, a five-time Olympian. The statue, created by artist Jan Fisher, is right next to the famous Waikiki Beach. Anae was a graduate assistant at Hawaii at the time and the artist needed a model, a surfer that was tall, and he went looking for the tallest surfer on the North Shore. Walk-on first year Tristan Hillerich is one of four boys. His parents, Brent and Colleen, are proud parents of two sets of twins. Tristan has a twin brother, Bart, while the pair has a younger set of twin brothers, Quinn and Grady. Virginia has five players on its roster who are the sons of former Cavalier football players. Joey Blount (Tony Blount), Germane Crowell (Germane Crowell, Sr.), Mikey McDonald (Geoff McDonald), Matthew Merrick (Nick Merrick) and Andrew Yavinsky (Marc Yavinsky). WR Chuck Davis won $100,000 playing the Virginia Lottery in June. He spent $1 for a Cash 5 game ticket at a 7-Eleven in Ashburn, Va. He used the numbers on his grandmother s license plate on the car he drove to the market.
