After winning its season opener, UVA is looking to start a season 2-0 for the first time since 2012 when the Cavaliers opened up with home wins over Richmond and Penn State. VIRGINIA VS. INDIANA Virginia leads the all-time series with Indiana, 2-1. UVA defeated the Hoosiers at Scott Stadium by 40 points in 2009, In UVA s return trip to Bloomington in 2011 it took a Robert Randolph 23-yard field goal as time expired to escape with a triumph. Randolph s game-winning field goal is one of two alltime game-winning field goals for the Cavaliers that came as time expired. Jake McInerney s 37-yard field goal against Louisville in 1989 is the other. FIVE TOP STORYLINES Virginia will be playing in the state of Indiana for the third time in program history and for the first time since Sept. 10, 2011 when UVA overcame an 8-point deficit with 6:34 remaining, winning on Randolph s 23-yard field goal the last time the Cavaliers visited Memorial Stadium. UVA s first game in the state of Indiana came on Sept. 21, 1968 at No. 1 Purdue, which resulted in a 44-6 loss. He needs 48 catches to break Billy McMullen s UVA record of 210. With 37 receptions, Zaccheaus will become only the second player in program history to reach 200 career receptions. #NewStandard: BY THE NUMBERS QB Bryce Perkins rushed for 108 yards and accounted for four touchdowns (2 rush, 2 pass) in UVA s season-opening win over Richmond. QB Bryce Perkins rushed for two touchdowns against Richmond, becoming the first UVA QB to do that since 2009 (Jameel Sewell at Southern Mississippi). Saturday marks the six-year anniversary since UVA s last win over a Big Ten team when the Cavaliers topped Penn State, HB Olamide Zaccheaus has a reception in 30-straight games. Here is some of the terminology that contributes to UVA s culture. Grounds: The term used by students, faculty and alumni to refer to the University dating as far back as Thomas Jefferson. Campus is never used. First Year, Second Year, Third Year, Fourth Year: Instead of freshman, sophomore, junior, senior. Why you may ask? To be a senior implies that a person has reached the final phase of learning, a feat that Thomas Jefferson believed to be impossible, arguing instead that education is a life-long process. Commonwealth: Virginia is one of four constituent states of the United States of America that officially uses the name Commonwealth instead of the word state in all references. The other three commonwealths are Kentucky, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. UNIVERSITY NICKNAMES Virginia s athletics teams have been accompanied by a somewhat confusing array of nicknames. The most prominent and widely accepted of these monikers are Cavaliers, Wahoos and Hoos. Although the terms Cavaliers, Wahoos and Hoos are used almost interchangeably to refer to University teams and players, Cavaliers is more often used by the media, while Wahoos and Hoos are frequently used by Virginia students and fans. Legend has it that Washington & Lee baseball fans dubbed the Virginia players Wahoos during the fiercely contested rivalry that existed between the two in-state schools in the 1890s. By 1940, Wahoos was in general use around Grounds to denote University students or events relating to them. The abbreviated Hoos sprang up later in student newspapers and has gained growing popularity in recent years. THE CAVALIER MASCOT The costumed Cavalier with a large character head debuted during Virginia s 1984 football season and has remained the official mascot of the University. The first documented Cavalier on horseback was Francis Bell, a Virginia student from Dublin, Va., in Bell rode onto the field dressed as Cavaliers for Virginia s home football game with Harvard on the afternoon of October 11. The Cavalier on horseback returned as the University s mascot in The UVA Polo Club provided both the horse and rider. However, the mounted Cavalier and his horse parted company in 1974 with the inception of AstroTurf at Scott Stadium. The mounted Cavalier made its return in the Florida Citrus Bowl at the end of the 1989 football season. Due to its instant popularity, the Cavalier on horseback returned the following season on a regular basis and continues to lead the Virginia football team onto the field at the beginning of all home games. UNIVERSITY COLORS Orange and blue were adopted as the University of Virginia s official athletic colors at a mass student meeting in UVA athletic teams had previously worn silver gray and cardinal red, but those colors did not stand out on muddy football fields, prompting a student movement to change them. One of the students attending the mass meeting was Allen Potts, a star athlete who played on Virginia s first football team in Potts showed up at the meeting wearing a navy blue-and-orange scarf that he had acquired during a summer boating expedition at Oxford University. Orange and blue were chosen as the official athletic colors after one of Potts fellow students pulled the scarf off Potts neck and, waving it to the crowd, yelled, How will this do? UVA later served as the inspiration for schools like Auburn and Florida when they selected school colors. WAH-HOO-WAH The origin of Wah-hoo-wah is uncertain. The cheer was used to root on Virginia teams as early as 1890 and may have been borrowed from Dartmouth College, whose athletics teams were once known as the Indians. Legend attributes the yell to Natalie Floyd Otey, who sang the ballad Where er You Are, There Shall My Love Be at Charlottesville s Levy Opera House in The predominantly student audience noticed that Otey warbled the first three words of the song between each of the stanzas and decided to join in the refrain. By evening s end, goes the legend, the crowd had corrupted Where er You Are into Wahhoo-wah. The Levy Opera House stands at the corner of High Street and Park Street and has since been renovated into an office building. 3

UVA s Bronco Mendenhall and IU s Tom Allen each coached against each other in last year s meeting, while the 2009 and 2011 meetings saw each school have different head coaches. VIRGINIA - INDIANA CONNECTIONS Virginia has two Hoosiers State natives on its 2017 roster. Sophomore offensive guard Ben Knutson hails from Granger, Ind., while sophomore punter/holder Nash Griffin calls Indianapolis home. Not many connections between the Virginia coaching staff and Indiana s coaching staff. IU special teams coordinator William Inge served as the linebackers coach at San Diego State in 2006 and 2007, facing Bronco Mendenhall s BYU teams. BYU won both games in 2006 and 2007 as UVA s offensive coordinator, Robert Anae, served in the same capacity. UVA assistant coaches Kelly Poppinga, Jason Beck and Vic So oto were BYU players that played in at least one or both of those SDSU games in UVA s Dylan Thompson and Indiana s Nile Sykes both played on the same defensive line at Montini Catholic, finishing as runner-ups the only year they played together (senior year). THE BIG TEN In all-time meetings with schools currently in the Big Ten, UVA is Seventy eight of those meetings came against Maryland ( ), a former ACC rival. Saturday s game is only the 18th time UVA has faced an active member of the Big Ten. UVA is 7-10 in those games. Virginia s wins over the Big Ten include a 47-0 triumph over the University of Chicago in 1939 (Chicago left the conference a year later). It was UVA s first Big Ten win. Virginia is 1-0 vs. Chicago and Minnesota, 2-1 vs. Indiana, 2-1 vs. Penn State (Big Ten member only), 1-1 vs. Purdue, 0-3 vs. Michigan, 0-2 vs. Illinois, 0-1 vs. Ohio State and Wisconsin. UVA s four-game winning streak against the Big Ten, dating back to the 2005 Music City Bowl, was snapped last season when Indiana beat UVA, 34-17, at Scott Stadium. The streak started with a Music City Bowl win over Minnesota and included wins over Indiana in 2009 and 2011, followed by a 2012 win over Penn State. There are more Big Ten games on the horizon for UVA: UVA has a future series slated with Illinois, starting in Charlottesville on Sept. 11, 2021 and Champaign on Sept. 10, The Cavaliers will renew their old ACC rivalry with Maryland, starting in College Park on Sept. 16, The Terps will return the visit on Sept. 14, 2024 at Scott Stadium. MORE ON THE UVA-IU SERIES Indiana s only two all-time games in the Commonwealth of Virginia have come at UVA s Scott Stadium. Its first trip to Scott Stadium in 2009 was the first, followed by the 2017 meeting. In UVA s 47-7 triumph in the 2009 meeting, the Cavaliers were led by Jameel Sewell, who was 20-of-30 passing for 308 yards and one score. He also rushed for 29 yards and another score. Mikell Simpson led UVA with four rushing touchdowns on 15 carries and 83 rushing yards. Eight Cavaliers made receptions, led by Vic Hall s six for 85 yards and a score. Ras-I Dowling made nine tackles, one interception and one sack to lead the UVA defense. Rodney McLeod picked up one fumble and returned it 32 yards, setting up UVA s first score of the game, a fiveyard rushing touchdown by Simpson. LAST TIME IN BLOOMINGTON The last time these two teams met at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Virginia defensive end Cam Johnson ripped the ball right out of Edward Wright-Baker s hands with 1:13 left, setting up a 23-yard field goal from Robert Randolph to give the Cavaliers a come-from-behind win at Indiana. Indiana seemed poised to give Hoosier head coach Kevin Wilson his first victory at IU after rallying from a 20-point second half deficit by turning three late turnovers into three touchdowns and lead with just 6:34 to play. Virginia, however, had the answer. The Cavaliers drove down the field, getting a 3-yard touchdown run from Perry Jones to close to Michael Rocco connected with tight end Paul Freedman, who twisted his way into the end zone for the tying 2-point conversion. It still was not over. Indiana got the ball back with 1:36 and was playing to win in regulation. But on third-and-3 from the Hoosiers 23, Wright-Baker took a seven-step drop and had barely set up in the pocket when the untouched Johnson raced around the corner. Wright-Baker never saw Johnson, who stripped the ball as both players fell to the ground at the Indiana 14. Four plays later, Randolph trotted onto the field and lined up between the hash marks for the winning kick. 4

TEAM COMPARISON Last Meeting Indiana s Peyton Ramsey completed 16-of-20 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns to lead Indiana to a victory over Virginia the last time these teams met. Ramsey replaced ineffective starter Richard Lagow in the second quarter. Lagow passed for 420 yards on 65 attempts last week, a school record, a week prior in a loss to Ohio State. But when Lagow started this game 3-of-10 with an interception, he was pulled by coach Tom Allen. Virginia was forced by its deficit to throw 66 times. The Hoosiers held the Cavaliers to 55 yards on 25 rushing attempts. After A.J. Mejia s 22-yard field goal put Virginia up 3-0 in the second quarter, Indiana scored three times in the final 6:30 of the half for a 17-3 lead. The Cavaliers opened the second half with a 12-yard touchdown run by Jordan Ellis, Virginia s longest run of the day. With two rushing touchdowns, Perkins became the first UVA quarterback to rush for two touchdowns in a game since Jameel Sewell at Southern Mississippi in Perkins finished with 108 rushing yards, becoming the first UVA quarterback to rush for at least 100 yards in a game since Sewell (104) did so against Virginia Tech in Perkins became only the 13th Cavalier quarterback to rush for at least 100 yards in a game. Perkins finished with 185 passing yards, giving him the 10th most by a UVA quarterback starting his first game. Perkins 36-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter against Richmond was the longest rush by a UVA quarterback since Matt Johns 42-yard rush against Kent State in IT IS A PERK TO HAVE A NEW QB ON THE BLOCK QB Bryce Perkins made his first career FBS start at quarterback against Richmond in the season opener. Perkins transferred to UVA last January from Arizona Western Community College after leading the Matadors to the 2017 NJCAA Championship game, before falling to East Mississippi. Perkins originally signed as a top recruit with hometown Arizona State, but never saw action during his two seasons in Tempe. He redshirted the 2015 season and missed the 2016 season with an injury. Perkins father, Bruce, lettered at Arizona State in 1988 and 1989 as a fullback and later played briefly in the NFL. Perkins older brother, Paul, was a three-year letterwinner at running back with the UCLA Bruins and currently plays with the New York Giants. Perkins uncle, Don Perkins, played eight season in the NFL with the Cowboys. Perkins, who passed for 1,311 yards and rushed for 353 yards (5.1 avg.) at Arizona Western in 2017, is replacing Kurt Benkert as UVA s quarterback in Benkert set UVA s single-season passing mark (3,207) and total offense (3,144) record in VIRGINIA RUSHING GAME SPRINTS IN OPENER Virginia rushed for 301 yards against Richmond in the season opener, the most rushing yards so far in the Bronco Mendenhall era. It was the first time the Cavaliers rushed over 200 yards since tallying 262 against Virginia Tech in 2015 and the first time reaching 300 rushing yards in a game since putting up 357 rushing yards against VMI in ARMSTRONG SEES TIME IN SEASON OPENER QB Brennan Armstrong made his collegiate debut against Richmond in the fourth quarter. Armstrong is the first UVA true freshman to play quarterback in a season opener since David Watford came off the bench against William & Mary in the 2011 opener. Armstrong enrolled early and took part of spring practice this year (like Watford in 2011). BRONCO MENDENHALL IS IN SPECIAL COMPANY Bronco Mendenhall is one of three active coaches that has inherited at least two programs in his career that were coming off a losing season and in year one, or year two, played in a bowl game. The others to do it are Nick Saban (Alabama, LSU, Michigan State) and Mark Dantonio (Michigan State/Cincinnati). Mendenhall inherited a BYU team that went 5-6 in 2004 and in his first season the Cougars went 6-6 and played in the 2005 Las Vegas Bowl. Reed had eight returns of 30 yards or more. That is the most by a Cavalier since Cedric Peerman returned nine kicks in 2005 for 30 yards or more. With only 56 kick returns to his career resume, Reed already ranks No. 4 all-time at UVA in career kick return yards with 1,539. In 2017 UVA was the only Power 5 to have three players with at least 100 tackles. New Mexico State was the only other school in the nation to also accomplish that feat in Mack returns the second-most tackles in ACC entering 2018, chasing only Duke s Joe Giles-Harris (125), who finished No. 3 in the ACC in tackles in Mack is tied for No. 14 in the nation among all tacklers returning in A THORN IN THE SIDE OF AN OFFENSE SS Juan Thornhill is one of the nation s best at what he does on defense. Thornhill has played corner and safety at UVA and entered 2018 with 23 career starts between the two positions. Thornhill earned third-team All-ACC honors in 2017 after finishing No. 3 in the ACC in both interceptions (4) and passes defended (16). Thornhill also is a stellar tackler, finishing 2017 with 63 tackles, including a career-high three for a loss against Navy in the Military Bowl. He also finished No. 2 on the team with seven special teams tackles. 8 TB Jordan Ellis became the 43rd Cavalier to rush for at least 1,000 yards in a career after posting 146 on the ground against Richmond in the season opener. STRONG SECONDARY RETURNS IN 2018 While UVA lost a lot on defense with the graduation of FS Quin Blanding, DE Andrew Brown and ILB Micah Kiser, it returns a pretty good secondary that finished No. 7 in the nation and No. 2 in the ACC with passing yards allowed per game. UVA s defense also ranked No. 9 nationally and No. 2 in the ACC in Red Zone defense in UVA entered 2018 with defensive secondary starts from Bryce Hall (13), Brenton Nelson (13), Juan Thornhill (12), Chris Moore (7), Joey Blount (1) and Tim Harris (1). CB Myles Robinson started three games in 2016 before suffering a season-ending injury. CB Tim Harris has 22 career starts entering 2018, but has missed most of 2016 and 2017 with injury.

9 2018 VIRGINIA FOOTBALL TEAM NOTES BLOUNT LOOKS TO MAKE DEFENSIVE IMPACT IN YEAR TWO With the graduation of UVA s all-time career tackle leader Quin Blanding, sophomore Joey Blount looks to have a big impact on defense. As a first year in 2017, Blount led UVA with 13 tackles on special teams, 11 of which came on kickoffs. Blount recorded his first career double-digit tackle game against Boston College, notching 10 stops while seeing his most playing time on defense in Blount made his first collegiate start at cornerback at Pitt in 2017 for the injured Juan Thornhill. Blount is the son of former UVA safety, Tony Blount, who played for the Cavaliers from and owns the 11th-longest interception return (63) in program history. DEFENSE GETS COOK AND HARRIS BACK FOR SIXTH SEASON UVA s defense welcomes the return of ILB Malcolm Cook and CB Tim Harris, each returning for a sixth season. Cook missed the entire 2016 season with a medical condition, while Harris received a medical hardship after appearing in two games. Harris suffered a season-ending injury in the 2017 season opener against William & Mary, receiving a second medical hardship in as many years. Harris owns 22 career starts, while Cook was slated as a starter at OLB in Bronco Mendenhall s 3-4 in 2016 before a medical condition almost halted his athletic career. Of Harris 22 starts, 21 of them took place between Harris missed the 2013 season opener against Mendenhall s BYU team with an injury, but played in the last 11 games of the year. He later played in the 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 season openers. Injuries slowed Cook in 2014 and 2015 before missing 2016 with a medical condition. He made six starts in 2017, including a career-high 13 tackles in the season-opening win against William & Mary. Harris and Cook, both hail from Richmond, enrolled together in ZACCHEAUS IS A BIG OFFENSIVE WEAPON Senior Olamide Zaccheaus returns for his fourth season with Virginia. The HB led UVA with 895 receiving yards and a UVA single-season record 85 receptions. He added five touchdowns. Zaccheaus is the only UVA receiver in program history to record two receptions of 80 yards or more. Zaccheaus notched a career-high 82-yard touchdown against Central Michigan in He then scored on an 81-yard touchdown strike at North Carolian in Zaccheaus enters 2018 No. 4 all-time at UVA with 157 career receptions and No. 9 all-time with 1,695 receiving yards. COLEMAN A PROVEN COMMODITY IN THE PUNT GAME Senior Lester Coleman returns to the fold in 2018 after earning second-team All-ACC honors as a punter. Coleman finished 2017 No. 4 in the ACC with a 43.7 punting average. He led the ACC with 23 punts of 50 yards or more and was No. 2 in the ACC, No. 7 nationally, with 29 punts inside the 20. Also, 16 of his 29 punts inside the 20 were downed inside the 10-yard line. Coleman also set a UVA single-season record with six punts of 60 yards or more. Coleman sat his first three years on Grounds before making his collegiate debut in the 2017 season opener against William & Mary. He sat the 2015 and 2016 seasons behind former first-team All-ACC punter Nicholas Conte. Coleman did not punt in high school until his senior season. He had played defensive line and receiver at Woodberry Forest. His high school needed a punter and because Lester s older brother, James, had walked on to UVA as a punter in 2012, Lester was asked to punt without any experience. Lester s brother, James, redshirted at UVA in 2012 and punted two times over three seasons ( ) before using his fifth year to be the starting punter at Western Michigan in Lester Coleman averaged 52.3 yards per punt over his seven punts against Boston College (Oct. 21) to break the single-game UVA punting record. The previous record belonged to Ryan Weigand, who averaged 51.6 yards per punt at Wyoming in PLAYERS EARN THEIR NUMBERS On the night of Saturday, Aug. 11, inside the locker room at Scott Stadium, 41 players earned their numbers in a special ceremony. On the night of Sat., Aug. 18, another 20 Cavaliers selected their numbers, including five first years. 13 2018 VIRGINIA FOOTBALL BRONCO MENDENHALL Bronco Mendenhall Head Coach Third Season Bronco Mendenhall is in his third season as Virginia s head football coach after being named the program s 40th head coach on Dec. 4, In Mendenhall s second season on Grounds in 2017 he directed UVA to its first bowl game since He oversaw a defense that ranked No. 7 in the nation and No. 2 in the ACC against the pass (165.8). The group was headed by three-time first-team All-ACC player Quin Blanding, ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year Brenton Nelson and third-team All-ACC cornerback Juan Thornhill. Blanding finished his illustrious career with more All-America honors and as UVA s all-time record holder with 495 career tackles. The 495 career tackles rank tied for No. 6 all-time in ACC history and are the most by any ACC defensive back. Blanding finished each of his four seasons No. 2 in the ACC in tackles. Inside linebacker Micah Kiser was named the Campbell Trophy winner (Academic Heisman) and led the ACC in tackles for the third year in a row. Only Boston College s Luke Kuechly ( ) had previously accomplished the feat in league history. Kiser was also a three-time first-team All-ACC honoree and received multiple All-America honors over the 2016 and 2017 seasons, including becoming the first Cavalier since Tiki Barber in 1996 to earn both academic and athletic All-America honors in the same season when he was a second-team CoSIDA Acdemic All-American in Mendenhall saw the conclusion of quarterback Kurt Benkert s collegiate career in The UVA quarterback became the first player in program history to throw for over 3,000 yards in a season. Benkert finished 2017 with 3,207 passing yards and a single-season program record 298 completions. Benkert s 25 passing touchdowns in 2017 rank No. 2 all-time at UVA for a season. The starting quarterback for each of Mendenhall s first two seasons at Virginia, Benkert leaves No. 3 all-time at UVA in career passing yards (5,759) and passing touchdowns (46), which came in 24 career games for the Cavaliers. In Mendenhall s first season on Grounds he oversaw a secondary that boasted first-team All-ACC honoree and All-American, Quin Blanding. Blanding finished the season No. 2 in the ACC in tackles for the third year in a row with 120 stops. Inside linebacker Micah Kiser, an All-American and first-team All-ACC honoree, thrived to lead the ACC in tackles for the second year in a row with 134, which is tied with former Cavalier great Wali Rainer for fourth-most in a single season in program history. Kiser was also a second-team CoSIDA Academic All-American, becoming the first Cavalier since Tiki Barber in 1996 to earn both academic and athletic All-America honors in the same season. Offensively, in Mendenhall s first season, Taquan Mizzell became the first player in ACC history to record at least 1,500 career rushing and 1,500 career receiving yards. UVA quarterback Kurt Benkert set a couple of passing marks in UVA s new offense, including a program record for passing yards in a game with 421 against Central Michigan, which was only the second time in program history a UVA quarterback surpassed 400 passing yards in a game. Benkert reached 1,000 passing yards in four games and 2,000 passing yards in eight games, setting a program record for fastest to that standard in a season. Mendenhall came to Charlottesville after 11 years as the head coach at Brigham Young University. In his 11 seasons, from , Mendenhall compiled an overall record of at BYU to rank 12th in total wins among all FBS teams during that time. In the three seasons prior to Mendenhall becoming the head coach at BYU, the Cougars compiled an overall record of Over Mendenhall s 11 years at BYU, the Cougars were one of only 11 programs to advance to a bowl game each season (includes the 2015 season). BYU joined by Alabama, Boise State, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, Oregon, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin on that list. Among those 11 teams, only Florida State has achieved more bowl wins (seven) than BYU s six bowl game victories. The success of Mendenhall s leadership approach in running the BYU football program was highlighted in a management book, Running Into the Wind: Bronco Mendenhall -- 5 Strategies for Building a Successful Team, written by Alyson Von Feldt and Paul Gustavson, a leading management consultant specializing in leadership development and organizational design. When offensive coordinator Robert Anae finished playing football, he returned home to Hawaii and served as the body model for the towering stature of the father of surfing, Duke Kahanamoku, a five-time Olympian. The statue, created by artist Jan Fisher, is right next to the famous Waikiki Beach. Anae was a graduate assistant at Hawaii at the time and the artist needed a model, a surfer that was tall, and he went looking for the tallest surfer on the North Shore. DL Samson Reed s father, Tanoai, played offensive line at Hawaii from Reed s dad, Tanoai, is the cousin of Dwayne The Rock Johnson and works as his Hollywood stunt double. Junior defensive lineman Cassius Peat is the son of Todd Peat, who played six seasons in the NFL with the Cardinals and Raiders as an offensive guard. His older brother, Andrus, was an All-American at Stanford and a former first round draft pick by the Saints (2015). Walk-on second year Tristan Hillerich is one of four boys. His parents, Brent and Colleen, are proud parents of two sets of twins. Tristan has a twin brother, Bart, while the pair has a younger set of twin brothers, Quinn and Grady. Virginia has five players on its roster who are the sons of former Cavalier football players.
