After playing every single season from , UVA and Wake Forest will only be meeting for the fourth time in the past 13 seasons. Saturday s game is the first meeting in the series since 2012 and the first at BB&T Field since VIRGINIA VS. WAKE FOREST Virginia owns a all-time record over Wake Forest in a series that began in 1889, a 46-4 UVA win in a game played in Richmond. UVA is 15-2 all-time at BB&T Field, dating back to Virginia had a 17-game winning streak from , which is the third-longest winning streak in ACC history against a league foe. Since the series was tied at seven wins apiece in 1970, Virginia has won 27 of the last 34 meetings. Virginia has won 10 of the last 11 games they have played against Wake Forest at BB&T Field. He would pass Shawn Moore s 1988 total of 2,158. Benkert s 17 touchdown passes place him in a tie at No. 11 for all-time for passing touchdowns in a season at UVA. Gene Arnette also had 17 passing touchdowns in TB Taquan Mizzell is the only Cavalier in program history to accure at least 1,400 career rushing yards (1,662) and 1,400 career receiving yards (1,411). #HOOSRISING: BY THE NUMBERS VS ILB Micah Kiser was all over the field against then-no. 5 Louisville. He had a game-high 14 tackles, 2.0 sacks and recovered a fumble. Kiser was named ACC Linebacker of the Week for his efforts. He leads the ACC and is No. 4 in the nation with 11.4 tackles per game. Virginia is No. 4 in the nation in red zone chances that result in a touchdown. UVA is posting a rate of 78.6 percent of its red zone chances resulting in a TD. WR Keeon Johnson needs 22 receiving yards to become the 36th Cavalier all-time to record 1,000 career receiving yards. Here is some of the terminology that contributes to UVA s culture. Grounds: The term used by students, faculty and alumni to refer to the University dating as far back as Thomas Jefferson. Campus is never used. First Year, Second Year, Third Year, Fourth Year: Instead of freshman, sophomore, junior, senior. Why you may ask? To be a senior implies that a person has reached the final phase of learning, a feat that Thomas Jefferson believed to be impossible, arguing instead that education is a life-long process. Commonwealth: Virginia is one of four constituent states of the United States of America that officially uses the name Commonwealth instead of the word state in all references. The other three commonwealths are Kentucky, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. UNIVERSITY NICKNAMES Virginia s athletics teams have been accompanied by a somewhat confusing array of nicknames. The most prominent and widely accepted of these monikers are Cavaliers, Wahoos and Hoos. Although the terms Cavaliers, Wahoos and Hoos are used almost interchangeably to refer to University teams and players, Cavaliers is more often used by the media, while Wahoos and Hoos are frequently used by Virginia students and fans. Legend has it that Washington & Lee baseball fans dubbed the Virginia players Wahoos during the fiercely contested rivalry that existed between the two in-state schools in the 1890s. By 1940, Wahoos was in general use around Grounds to denote University students or events relating to them. The abbreviated Hoos sprang up later in student newspapers and has gained growing popularity in recent years. THE CAVALIER MASCOT The costumed Cavalier with a large character head debuted during Virginia s 1984 football season and has remained the official mascot of the University. The first documented Cavalier on horseback was Francis Bell, a Virginia student from Dublin, Va., in Bell rode onto the field dressed as Cavaliers for Virginia s home football game with Harvard on the afternoon of October 11. The Cavalier on horseback returned as the University s mascot in The UVA Polo Club provided both the horse and rider. However, the mounted Cavalier and his horse parted company in 1974 with the inception of AstroTurf at Scott Stadium. The mounted Cavalier made its return in the Florida Citrus Bowl at the end of the 1989 football season. Due to its instant popularity, the Cavalier on horseback returned the following season on a regular basis and continues to lead the Virginia football team onto the field at the beginning of all home games. UNIVERSITY COLORS Orange and blue were adopted as the University of Virginia s official athletic colors at a mass student meeting in UVA athletic teams had previously worn silver gray and cardinal red, but those colors did not stand out on muddy football fields, prompting a student movement to change them. One of the students attending the mass meeting was Allen Potts, a star athlete who played on Virginia s first football team in Potts showed up at the meeting wearing a navy blue-and-orange scarf that he had acquired during a summer boating expedition at Oxford University. Orange and blue were chosen as the official athletic colors after one of Potts fellow students pulled the scarf off Potts neck and, waving it to the crowd, yelled, How will this do? UVA later served as the inspiration for schools like Auburn and Florida when they selected school colors. WAH-HOO-WAH The origin of Wah-hoo-wah is uncertain. The cheer was used to root on Virginia teams as early as 1890 and may have been borrowed from Dartmouth College, whose athletics teams were once known as the Indians. Legend attributes the yell to Natalie Floyd Otey, who sang the ballad Where er You Are, There Shall My Love Be at Charlottesville s Levy Opera House in The predominantly student audience noticed that Otey warbled the first three words of the song between each of the stanzas and decided to join in the refrain. By evening s end, goes the legend, the crowd had corrupted Where er You Are into Wahhoo-wah. The Levy Opera House stands at the corner of High Street and Park Street and has since been renovated into an office building. 3

DEACS The Cavaliers have put on some impressive offensive performances against Wake Forest in the last 30 years since the early 1980s. The Cavaliers have scored 30 or more points in 13 of the last 20 meetings. Two of UVa s top-six total offense figures have come vs. the Demon Deacons. The most impressive output was a 643-yard performance (323 yards rushing, 320 yards passing) in The 643 yards of offense is tied for the fourth-highest total in school history and marks the only game in school history where the Cavaliers gained 300 yards both rushing and passing. CAVALIER RUSHERS SHINE VS. WAKE In 18 of the last 27 games against Wake Forest, dating back to 1980, Virginia has had at least one player rush for 100 yards. There have been 26 Cavaliers since 1954 who have rushed for at least 100 yards against Wake Forest, the most by UVA against any ACC team. 5 2016 VIRGINIA FOOTBALL WAKE FOREST SERIES NOTES LAST MEETING 2012 Wake Forest 16, Virginia 10 Oct. 20, 2012 Charlottesville, Va. TEAM COMPARISON Last Meeting Chad Hedlund kicked three field goals and Wake Forest beat Virginia during the 2012 season. The Demon Deacons came in to the game allowing more than 206 rushing yards and 31 points, but limited the Cavaliers to 48 yards on 32 carries. They also stymied a late Virginia drive with a 6-yard loss on second down and an 11-yard sack of Phillip Sims on third down. The Cavaliers had driven to the Demon Deacons 36 before those two plays. On its previous drive, Virginia reached the Wake Forest 34 and faced second-and-1 when Sims tried to float a pass to wide receiver Darius Jennings near the end zone. Instead, Demon Deacons cornerback Kevin Johnson got inside position on the throw and intercepted, ending the possession. Johnson also recovered a fumble earlier. UVA s final chance for a comeback ended with 1:59 left when Virginia forced a punt, and the ball hit returner Khalek Shepherd near the shoulders and bounced away, the Demon Deacons recovering to essentially finish it. The Demon Deacons went ahead 16-7 with more help as Virginia got called for an illegal block in the back on a punt when Wake Forest punted on fourthand-11 from the Cavaliers 38. The Deacons went for it on fourth-and-one, and Price made it. Six plays later, Hedlund kicked his third field goal, a 24-yarder. Virginia answered quickly, driving 62 yards in eight plays. Sims started the drive with a 31-yard pass to Jake McGee, but the drive stalled at the Demon Deacons 13. Ian Frye kicked a 30-yard field goal. The Demon Deacons scored on their first offensive play of the game. After forcing Virginia to punt, Lovell Jackson returned it 60 yards. On the next play, Harris went right for the 16-yard touchdown. Blanding reached 300 tackles the fastest of any UVA defensive back, making it to the milestone seven games sooner than Anthony Poindexter ( ). Other firsts for Louisville against Virginia: First time UL s opponent scored first and its seven first half points were its fewest at halftime this season. Clemson also had five. BLANDING RANKS HIGH AMONG ACTIVE PLAYERS IN CAREER TACKLES Blanding s 321 career tackles rank No. 7 among all active FBS players. He is tied with Illinois Hardy Nickerson. He is the only junior that ranks in the Top 25 among top active career tacklers. Blanding is No. 3 among active ACC players with the most career tackles, trailing Duke s Devon Edwards (327) and Wake Forest s (322) Ryan Janvion. REID IS UVA S OTHER 1,000-YARD RUSHER With 1,596 rushing yards, UVA s Taquan Mizzell is No. 26 all-time at UVA in career rushing, but he isn t the only Cavalier with at least 1,000 career rushing yards at the college level. TB Albert Reid reached 1,000 career yards at the college level in Week 3 at UConn. Reid currently has 1,174 rushing yards with 12 career scores. UVA ranks fourth in the nation in red-zone chances that ended with a touchdown (78.6 percent). Since Taquan Mizzell fumbled on the five-yard line against Richmond in the season-opening game, UVA has scored on 25-of-27 trips inside the red-zone. Both times UVA failed during those last 27 trips inside the red-zone was because of missed field goals. Alex Furbank s 20-yard field goal attempt as time expired at UConn on Sept. 17 was the first, followed by Sam Hayward s 30-yard attempt against then-no. 5 Louisville on Oct. 29. BENKERT WITH THE LONG PASS QB Kurt Benkert is one of three quarterbacks in the nation with passes of 82 yards or more, while he is the tied for No. 5 in the nation with three passes of 70 yards or more. He has an 84-yard pass to David Eldridge at Duke, a 82-yard touchdown pass and a 74-yard touchdown pass to Olamide Zaccheaus. The 82-yard one came against Central Michigan and the 74-yard one came against Pitt. BLANDING AND KISER TOP THE ACC IN TACKLES Micah Kiser (11.4) is leading the ACC in tackles per game and Quin Blanding (10.4) is No. 2 in the ACC in tackles per game. Kiser and Blanding are the only defensive duo from the same school to rank No. 1 and No. 2 in tackles for their respective conferences. This is old hat for Kiser and Blanding, as they were the only defensive duo from the same school in 2015 to rank No. 1 and No. 2 in their respective conferences in tackles. Kiser ranks No. 4 nationally in tackles, while Blanding ranks No. 10 nationally. Blanding finished 2014 and 2015 No. 2 in the ACC in tackles. His 35 receptions trail only Keeon Johnson s 39 and Taquan Mizzell s 36. Zaccheaus had a career day against Central Michigan when he made eight catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns. His 82-yard touchdown reception from Kurt Benkert is the 28th longest reception in the nation this season and the 13th longest touchdown reception in UVA program history. Along with a 74-yard scoring catch against Pitt, Zaccheaus is tied for No. 3 in the nation with the most receptions of 70+ yards. Zaccheaus came to UVA as a running back, but switched to wide receiver as a true freshman to fill a need in The versatile Zaccheaus also ran back kicks in 2015 and is on the preseason watch list for the Paul Hornung Award, the national honor given to the most versatile player. Olamide is Nigerian for the blessing has come. JOHNSON EMERGES AS BIG TARGET FOR BENKERT Senior WR Keeon Johnson has 39 receptions for 385 yards and three touchdowns. His 39 receptions are the most on the team. His 26 receptions through UVA s first five games of 2016 equaled his 2014 and 2015 output combined. Johnson only recorded 13 receptions each of those seasons after grabbing 20 catches as a freshman in eight games. Johnson s two touchdown catches through the first two games of 2016 equaled his career total entering He now has five career touchdowns. Johnson s 385 receiving yards are more than the combined 311 receiving yards the senior had in 2014 and Johnson had138 receiving yards in 2014 and his 2015 total came to 173 yards. Eleven of his receptions have given UVA a first down on third or fourth down, including a crucial 4th and 10 at UConn that went for 34 yards. Albert Reid s 126-yard rushing game led UVA s 220 combined rushing yards from its three backs against Oregon. Taquan Mizzell added 48 rushing yards and Jordan Ellis added 46 in the loss at Oregon. At Oregon, UVA s running backs gained 220 yards on 31 carries for an average of 7.1 yards per rush, while also scoring two touchdowns. Starting with the Oregon game, UVA s running backs have rushed for 914 yards and 10 touchdowns for an average rushing yards per game. With 180 attempts, UVA running backs are averaging 5.1 yards per rush during that span. Also, since Mizzell s two fumbles against Richmond, UVA running backs have not fumbled once, a span of 29 quarters. BENKERT BREAKS UVA PASSING RECORD FOR A GAME Virginia quarterback Kurt Benkert broke Marc Verica s record for passing yards in a game. Benkert threw for 421 passing yards on Sept. 24 against Central Michigan, snapping Verica s 2010 record of 417 passing yards in a game that came at Duke. Benkert threw five touchdowns, making him the fifth Cavalier to throw five touchdowns in a game and the first since Matt Schaub in 2002 against Akron. The five touchdowns are tied for second-most by a UVA quarterback in a game. HAMM HAS IMPROVED UVA S PUNT RETURN GAME IN 2016 TB Daniel Hamm has returned 16 punts for 153 yards in The 153 return yards are the most by a Cavalier in a season since 2007 when Vic Hall had 230 return yards. Hamm s 9.6 yards per return is also the best by a Cavalier since Hall posted 10 yards per return in that same 2007 season for players with at least 10 returns in a season. SOCCER NATIONAL CHAMPION JOINS TEAM AS A PLACEKICKER Former UVA men s soccer player Sam Hayward joined the football team as a walk-on placekicker on Sept. 19. Hayward made his college football debut at Duke on Oct. 1, connecting on all four PATs he attempted. Hayward attempted his first career field goal in the fourth quarter against Pitt, making the 36-yard kick. It was only UVA s third field goal attempt of 2016 Hayward was a member of UVA s men s soccer program in 2014 and 2015 after spending the 2013 season at Penn. Hayward was part of UVA s 2014 NCAA title team. He finished the second penalty kick in the shootout of the NCAA championship match against UCLA. He also converted on one of UVA s PKs in the quarterfinal win over Georgetown and tied the game late in the first half of the second round NCAA match with UNC Wilmington. 15 2016 VIRGINIA FOOTBALL BRONCO MENDENHALL Bronco Mendenhall Head Coach First Season Bronco Mendenhall was named Virginia s head football coach on Dec. 4, He served as the head football coach at Brigham Young University for 11 years before joining the Cavalier program. Mendenhall, Virginia s 40th head football coach, has compiled an overall record of in his 11 seasons as head coach at BYU to rank 12th in total wins among all FBS teams during that time. Mendenhall also ranks 13th in winning percentage (.697) among all active coaches with at least five years of FBS experience, and he ranks 10th among active coaches with at least 10 years of experience. In the three seasons prior to Mendenhall becoming the head coach at BYU, the Cougars compiled an overall record of Over the last 11 years, the Cougars are one of only 11 programs to advance to a bowl game each season (includes the 2015 season). BYU is joined by Alabama, Boise State, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, Oregon, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin on that list. Among those 11 teams, only Florida State has achieved more bowl wins (seven) than BYU s six bowl game victories. BYU football student-athletes have earned freshman All-America recognition in eight of the past 10 seasons. More than 60 BYU players have signed with NFL teams since Mendenhall arrived in Provo, including defensive end Ezekiel Ansah, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft and Kyle Van Noy, the No. 40 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Under Mendenhall, the Cougars tied for seventh among all FBS programs for the most Academic All-America citations over the last decade and BYU tops all FBS programs with the most selections (39) to the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society (recognizing starters and significant contributors finishing their eligibility with a 3.2 GPA or better over their college career) since the program began in The success of Mendenhall s leadership approach in running the BYU football program has been highlighted in a management book, Running Into the Wind: Bronco Mendenhall -- 5 Strategies for Building a Successful Team, written by Alyson Von Feldt and Paul Gustavson, a leading management consultant specializing in leadership development and organizational design. Mendenhall was elected in 2013 to the American Football Coaches Association Board of Trustees as the District 8 Representative and also serves on the AFCA Ethics Committee. In his first year in 2005 after taking over a program coming off three losing seasons, Mendenhall led BYU to a 6-5 regular-season record and earned an invitation to the Maaco Bowl Las Vegas -- the team s first postseason bowl appearance in three seasons. The Cougars finished tied for second in the MWC with a 5-3 league ledger. Following the 2006 season, Mendenhall was named the American Football Coaches Association Region IV Coach of the Year. In addition, the Football Writers Association of America named Mendenhall one of nine finalists for the prestigious Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award. A dominant defense led BYU to its seventh winning season in as many years as the BYU football team finished the 2012 season with eight wins, a program-best fourth consecutive bowl victory and the No. 3 defense in the nation. With an 8-5 record, BYU claimed its sixth season with as least eight wins under Mendenhall s eight-year head coaching tenure. Incredibly consistent all year long, BYU finished the year ranked No. 3 in total defense, allowing just yards per game. The Cougars ended the season ranked in the top four in five major defensive categories. Mendenhall has served as the BYU s defensive coordinator for much of his tenure as the head coach. 16 2016 VIRGINIA FOOTBALL FUN FACTS FUN FACTS UVA S EARLY FOOTBALL HISTORY AT LAMBETH FIELD The colonnades at Lambeth Field turn 103 in The playing surface at Lambeth Field hosted Virginia football from 1902 until Scott Stadium opened up in the midst of the 1931 season on Oct. 15, Lambeth Field is the location where the American game of football that we know today, played from youth league all the way up to the NFL, was first played. It all started in 1909 with the death of UVA s Archer Christian. Christian died in 1909 as a result of injuries sustained in a football game at Georgetown on Nov. 13, Christian s death highlighted 29 football related deaths during the 1909 season. Papers from all over the country carried the front-page headline of Christian s death. Former UVA President Edwin A. Alderman and the father of UV athletics, William Lambeth, went to New York City to meet with other presidents and administrators from other big time universities to discuss how they could make the game of football safer. At the time there was legislation happening in Washington to make it illegal to play the game of football in America. A new rules committee that was appointed from that meeting in New York City included Lambeth and the father of American football, Walter Camp. Lambeth noted to the committee, which met almost on a monthly basis, that the two deaths he had seen personally were due to exhaustion. At the time there were no substitutions, if you came out you could no longer return. The original game had a lot of pulling and pushing. Players were not considered down until they really couldn t move under the pile. Lambeth suggested that the game be split into four quarters, totaling 15 minutes a piece and that players could substitute back in. Walter Camp s notes from the committee meetings credit Lambeth, in the margins, with these changes. The committee asked Lambeth to take the new rules back to the University of Virginia and experiment with them during the spring of On the Grounds of the University of Virginia, under the watchful eye of William Lambeth, a new version of American football, divided into four quarters was played for the first time in history. Other notable rules that were played for the first time that spring at Lambeth Field were: seven men required on the line at the time of the snap, players could no longer push or pull the ball carrier and the forward pass could now be made across the line of scrimmage. Virginia football returned to its roots at Lambeth Field during camp in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016, taking part in various scrimmages and practices on the hallowed ground. 18 2016 VIRGINIA FOOTBALL HONORS/WATCH LISTS DID YOU KNOW? UVA junior Quin Blanding was named by his mother Cory Lee after the movie titled The Mighty Quinn, staring Denzel Washington and Mimi Rogers. It was the first movie she saw following a checkup during her seventh month of pregnancy and the moment held significant meaning to her. At that checkup the doctor s told her they thought they saw a hole in Quin s head and that it appeared to them his cerebrum wasn t connected. Quin was born completely healthy. Cory named him Quin with one n instead of two in recognition of that moment during pregnancy. She knew he will be all right and that he will be the mighty one. Blanding s father, Kevin, played football at NCAA Division II Glenville State (W.Va.) for current Arizona football head coach Rich Rodriguez. When offensive coordinator Robert Anae finished playing football, he returned home to Hawaii and served as the body model for the towering statue of the father of surfing, Duke Kahanamoku, a five-time Olympian. The statue, created by artist Jan Fisher, is right next to the famous Waikiki Beach. Anae was a graduate assistant at Hawaii at the time and the artist needed a model, a surfer that was tall, and he went looking for the tallest surfer on the North Shore. UVA s oldest living football alum, Dr. John Risher, turned 106 years old this year; he also works in the press box on the UVA stats crew on game day. Matt Johns made his collegiate debut as the UVA holder in The first time Johns made it into a college game he had to hold in the rain on Ian Frye s 53-yard field goal in the 2013 season-opening win over BYU and now current UVA head coach Bronco Mendenhall. Frye s kick sailed through as time expired in the first half, tying the third-longest field goal in UVA history. Senior SS Kelvin Rainey has two brothers that have played FBS football. His older brother Johnathan played at New Mexico ( ), while his other older brother Derrick played at Arizona ( ). QB Connor Brewer spent two seasons playing for Rich Rodriguez at Arizona ( ). SS Kelvin Rainey s older brother, Derrick, spent four seasons ( ) playing at Arizona with his last two under Rodriguez.
