Both Army West Point and Loyola are coming off of losses in its Patriot League opener. LOYOLA GREYHOUNDS (2-10, 0-1 PATRIOT LEAGUE) Stephanie Karcz ranks fifth in the Patriot League with 14.3 points per game, while she leads the League with 37 steals and is fifth in rebounding, with 8.6 per game. Izzy Therien is second on the team in scoring and ninth in the League with 12.6 points per game. She s reached double-figures in scoring through seven of the eight games she s played this season. In conference only games, Ashley Hunter is ranked 15th in the League after contributing a career-high 12 points at Navy on Friday. ARMY WEST POINT BLACK KNIGHTS (7-5, 0-1 PATRIOT LEAGUE) Madison Hovren is one of two Patriot League players averaging double digits in both points and rebounds. Her scoring average of 16.2 ranks third in the League, while she s ranked second in rebounds, with 10.3 per game. Daizjah Morris leads the squad and ranks second in the Patriot League with 28 steals, while Janae McNeal has a team-best 40 assists. The Black Knights are ranked second in the Patriot League in scoring margin this season, as they re outscoring their opponents 9.1 points per game. 2 LOYOLA WOMEN S BASKETBALL Loyola University Maryland women s basketball opened its 47th season of action and fifth year of play in the Patriot League, a conference it joined prior to the season, with a win over Cornell in the season-opener at Reitz Arena on Friday, Nov. 10. Prior to joining the Patriot League, Loyola was in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Greyhounds joined the conference in 1989 and, through its 22 years of membership, posted an overall record of in MAAC games. Loyola also won two MAAC Tournament titles, in 1993 and The Greyhounds opened the season with three-straight home games, and is now embarking on a five-game road trip that will ultimately turn into eight games away from home in a nine-game span. Loyola will begin Patriot League play at Navy on Friday, Dec. 29. Joe Logan is in his 13th season as Loyola s head coach. A 1996 alum of the school, Logan is the program s all-time leader in wins and carries a record into the campaign. REVVING UP KARCZ Sophomore Stephanie Karcz has scored in double figures through seven of 10 games this year and has reached double digits in points 24 times throughout her career. She s also posted two double-doubles this season, contributing 16 points and a personalbest 17 rebounds at Norfolk State, and 15 points and 12 rebounds at Mount St. Mary s. In the season opener against Cornell, Karcz poured in a personal-best 25 points, topping her previous best of 23 points at Army West Point on February 4 of her freshman season. Karcz then led all players with a career-high 27 points in the fourth game of her sophomore season, at No. 16 Marquette, on November 20, Throughout her career, Karcz has reached 20 points in 10 games. THERIEN IT UP Freshman Izzy Therien has reached double figures in scoring in seven of the eight games she s played this season. Therien s 18 points vs. Cornell marked the most for a Greyhound rookie in their collegiate debut under head coach Joe Logan and the most for a Loyola freshman since at least 1990, as no records were kept prior to then. Therien played 17 minutes in the win over Cornell, going 7-for-10, including draining her first - and only - 3-point attempt. Against George Mason, Therien played 21 minutes and shot 50 percent (5-for-10) from the field, finishing with 16 points. She also added six rebounds in the contest. Therien missed the next four games due to injury, but returned at Mount St. Mary s, and scored 10 points against both the Mount and at St. Francis Brooklyn, before turning in 15 points vs. Towson, 13 at No. 15 Maryland and 12 at Delaware. When playing at Reitz Arena, the two teams are tied, 3-3. In a series that dates back to 2008, Loyola earned four of the first five wins, but the Black Knights then went on a seven-game win streak once Loyola joined the Patriot League, sweeping each of the 2014, 2015 and 2016 series. The Greyhounds earned their first League victory over Army West Point last year RECAP The Greyhounds nearly upset top-seeded Bucknell, the eventual Patriot League Champions, in the quarterfinals round of the Patriot League Tournament last season, falling in Sojka Pavilion. Loyola advanced to the quarterfinals after knocking off Lehigh, 78-50, in the first round. Bri Betz-White became Loyola s second first-team All-Patriot League selection, as she joined former teammate Colleen Marshall, who earned the honor following the season. Betz-White ranked fourth in the League in scoring, with 15.0 points per game, and recorded her 1,000th career point with her 408th point of the season. Stephanie Karcz had a breakout rookie season for the Greyhounds. Stepping into the starting lineup for the seventh game of the season, Karcz finished the year third on the team in points (9.9 per game) and led the squad in rebounds (6.4 per game). She also ranked second in the Patriot League with 76 steals and was named to the Patriot League All-Defensive and All-Rookie Teams.

3 INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE Over the summer, Molly Taylor was one of 12 players selected for the Great Britain U20 Women s Basketball squad that participated at the FIBA U20 Women s European Championships in Israel. The British beat Ireland, 69-46, and Romania, 74-48, to reach the 5th-8th classification, but tournament hosts Israel beat Great Britain, 77-49, in the Classification Game for 7th place. Taylor played in all seven games for Great Britain, averaging 18.3 minutes per contest and 2.6 points per game. FRESH FACES Loyola will have three new faces in the huddle this year, as Loyola welcomes two freshmen - Delaney Connolly and Izzy Therien - and assistant coach Shelley Sheetz to the program. Connolly comes to the Greyhounds from Oakton High School in Northern Virginia, where she led the Cougars to four-straight Concorde Conference titles, three-straight Northern Regional titles and Class 6A State Semifinal appearances. She earned All-Met First Team honors as a senior, after averaging 18.3 points per game. As a junior, Connolly averaged a double-double of 13.2 points and 10.6 rebounds. Therien comes from Marlton, New Jersey, where she helped Cherokee High School to four Olympic Conference titles. Therien averaged 20.1 points, 3.0 steals and 10-plus rebounds per game as a senior, while shooting 91 percent from the free throw line. Her point total ranked in the top-30 of the state, as she scored 10-or-more points in all but one game. Sheetz brings 15 years of college basketball coaching experience and a successful playing career at the collegiate and professional levels to the Greyhounds. A standout at the University of Colorado, Sheetz became the school s youngest inductee to the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004 and the program s first Kodak All-American in after leading the Buffaloes to a 30-3 record and a bid to the NCAA Elite Eight. She was also named an All-American by the Associated Press, Basketball Times and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, and was one of five finalists for the prestigious James Naismith Award. As a professional player, Sheetz played two-plus seasons in the American Basketball league and BTV Wuppertal, a professional side in Germany. As a coach, Sheetz spent the season at Boston College, where she was the Eagles primary perimeter and point guard coach. She also coached at the University of Denver from , where she helped the Pioneers reach the 2011 WNIT, at Pepperdine from , San Diego from , and Washington State from PRESEASON ALL-PATRIOT LEAGUE Senior Bri Betz-White picked up Preseason All-Patriot League honors for a secondstraight season, being the lone guard named to this year s five-member preseason allconference team. A first-team all-conference performer a year ago, Betz-White is the top returning guard in the Patriot League after ranking fourth in the League with 15.0 points per game a year ago. She also ranked second in the League in minutes played (34.9 per game), tied for third in steals (3.5 per game), sixth in field goal percentage (.415) and 10th in assist/ turnover ratio (1.2). Betz-White rached double figures in scoring through 25 of 31 contests last year, including dropping at least 20 points on six occasions. 4 TO 1,000 AND BEYOND Bri Betz-White became Loyola s 21st and the Patriot League s 101st player to record 1,000 points throughout their career, as she reached the plateau on Wednesday, Feb. 22, Betz-White dropped 23 points vs. Holy Cross to become the sixth Greyhound to reach the milestone before the start of their senior season. She s also the fourth Greyhound to record all 1,000 points under head coach Joe Logan. Katie Sheahin (1,513 points from ), Miriam McKenzie (1,398; ) and Erica DiClemente (1,123; ) all reached the milestone under Logan, while Katie Scherle hit her 1,000th point in her senior season, Logan s first at the helm of the program. The fastest player to 1,000 points was Patty Stoffey, as she is the lone Greyhound to have hit the milestone as a sophomore. Stoffey finished her career as the program s record holder with 2,467 career points from Lorrie Schenning (1,565 points from ) trails Stoffey on the school s all-time record chart and is joined by Sheahin, Kathy O Halloran (1,431; ) and McKenzie as the only players to record their 1,000th point as juniors. ACCELERATING KARCZ As a freshman, Stephanie Karcz earned a spot in the starting lineup in the seventh game of her rookie season, against Mount St. Mary s, and made the most of her starting opportunity in Through the first six games of last season, Karcz played 9.2 minutes per contest and averaged 3.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, 0.3 assists and 1.3 steals. Karcz then started 24 of the final 25 games, and averaged 29.5 minutes, 11.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. She also contributed 55 assists and a team-best 67 steals. Karcz finished fourth on the team in minutes (25.7) and third in points (9.9) per game. She also led the team in rebounds (6.4) and steals (76), and was third in assists (59). For her play, she was named to the five-member Patriot League All-Defensive and All- Rookie teams. PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATIONS Loyola was picked to finish ninth by a poll of Patriot League coaches and sports information personnel prior to the season. Bucknell, which won the 2017 Patriot League Championship, and Army West Point were picked as co-favorites, each earning an identical 140 points and seven first-place votes. American was ranked third with five first-place votes and 134 points, followed by Navy with the remaining first-place vote and 119 points. Boston University (91 points) rounded out the top five, and was followed by Holy Cross (81), Lehigh (64), Colgate (55), Loyola (54) and Lafayette (22). Bri Betz-White was the lone guard named to the five-player Preseason All-Patriot League team, while she was joined on the team by Preseason Player of the Year Madison Hovren (Army, F), Sophie Beaudry (Boston, C), Kaitlyn Slagus (Bucknell, F) and Lauren Manis (Holy Cross, F). American Army Boston U Bucknell Colgate Holy Cross Lafayette Lehigh Navy HEAD COACH JOE LOGAN Joe Logan was named Loyola s 11th head women s basketball coach on May 12, Logan has more wins at Loyola than any other head coach in program history. He earned his 150th career victory with a win over Lipscomb in the opener. In , Logan coached the Greyhounds to their first postseason victory in program history by knocking off Old Dominion, 67-65, in the first round of the WNIT. That same year, Logan led Loyola to a second 20-plus win season in his tenure, as the Greyhounds tied a program record 21 wins. With a win at Siena College on January 7, 2012, Logan picked up his 101st victory to record more wins than any other head coach in Loyola women s basketball history. Throughout his tenure, Logan registered more Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference wins (76) than any other Loyola head coach. He also led the Greyhounds to two trips to the title game of the MAAC Championships (2006 and 2011). He led the Greyhounds to arguably the most successful year in program history in , tying the record for most wins in a single season with 21, and setting the mark for the most conference wins in a single season with 15. Under Logan, nine student-athletes have been named to all-conference teams. Two players earned MAAC Sixth Player of the Year honors, while eight players have been named to allconference rookie teams. In 2011, guard Katie Sheahin became Logan s first conference player of the year, while she received back-to-back MAAC Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2011 and On Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015, Logan led Loyola to its 500th program victory. He was a part of 40.6 percent of the 500 wins up until that point. He earned his bachelors of arts in history with a minor in business from Loyola in Logan is married to the former Susan Bryce (Loyola 96), who played basketball for the Greyhounds from The couple has three kids, Maggie, Rose and Joseph.
