Davis boasts an overall record of (.578) in seven seasons as a head coach, and is (.484) through one year at UAB. Furthermore, Davis has led his teams to five postseason appearances, including the 2002 national championship game. The Blazers return seven letterwinners and three starters from last season s team. Leading the way is senior guard Paul Delaney III, who earned a spot on Conference USA s preseason team. UAB and West Alabama are meeting for the third consecutive year in exhibition play. The Blazers have won the previous two meetings, topping the Tigers in 2006 and in Eddie McCarter enters his first season as head coach at West Alabama. McCarter, a UAB alum, spent the campaign serving as Director of Basketball Operations on Mike Davis staff. Coach McCarter is not the only UWA employee who has ties to UAB athletics, as UAB alum E.J. Brophy enters his second year as Director of Athletics at West Alabama. Brophy spent three years in the Development office as an Assistant AD before heading the Tigers athletics program in UAB and UWA have only met on one occasion during the regular season, when the Blazers captured a victory on Dec. 1, 2002 in Bartow Arena. 2 Sc o u t i n g UAB UAB is coming off a disappointing overall record in , marking just the fourth time in the program s 29-year history that it finished at.500 or below. However, the Blazers, who boasted of just nine scholarship players last season including three of whom sat out as transfers, enter this season, reloaded and with lofty expectations. Leading the list of returnees will be preseason All-Conference USA honoree Paul Delaney III. The 2007 first-team all-conference member is coming off one of the best seasons in school history, leading the Blazers in points (15.5), assists (5.2) and steals (1.9), while ranking third on the squad in field goal percentage (45.9 percent) and fourth in rebounding (4.8 rpg). Joining Delaney will be junior forward Lawrence Kinnard and senior forward Frank Holmes. Kinnard also had a career-best campaign last season, averaging 13.0 points per game which was third-best on the team. Furthermore, Kinnard led the team with 6.2 rpg and 41.0-percent shooting from beyond the arc. Holmes was also a valuable contributor, collecting 6.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per contest, while leading his team in shooting percentage (56.0 percent). There is also a plethora of newcomers, as fans will see eight new faces on the floor for the Blazers this season - a recruiting class which was ranked as high as No. 9 in the nation (CollegeHoopsUpdate.com). Leading the rookies will be a trio of transfers who missed the 07 campaign due to NCAA transfer rules. Junior guard/forward Robert Vaden (Indiana) and sophomore forward Walter Sharpe (Mississippi State) will be eligible to see action immediately, while junior guard Channing Toney (Georgia), who was a mid-season transfer, will not be able to play until late December. Head coach Mike Davis enters his second season at the helm of the UAB men s basketball program. Davis, who is in his eighth season as a head coach, boasts a career record of (.578) and five postseason appearances, including the 2002 national championship game. Sc o u t i n g We s t Al a b a m a The West Alabama Tigers enter Thursday s exhibition contest following a record last season. The Tigers are in a rebuilding process, and have 11 new faces on the team. First-year head coach Eddie McCarter, who spent last season at UAB as the director of basketball operations, will have several seniors on the squad. McCarter, a 1975 graduate of UAB, will rely heavily on guards Layton Knight and Michael Billings and forward/center Abdoulaye N diaye, the three seniors on this year s team. Billings leads all returning players, playing in 27 contests and making 20 starts last year. Billings averaged 5.9 points, VS. Bl a z e r s Ra n k e d As Hi g h As 35t h Despite recording a overall record last season, the UAB men s basketball team is starting to earn national recognition entering the campaign. The Blazers have been ranked as high as No. 25 in the country according to Rivals.com and Athlon, while UAB earned votes according to the CSTV preseason top-25. However, the Blazers were not ranked or receiving votes in the USA Today/AP preseason polls. A complete listing of the polls can be found on page six. Bl a z e r s Pi c k e d To Finish Se c o n d In C-USA, De l a n e y Na m e d Pr e s e a s o n Al l-co n f e r e n c e Senior guard Paul Delaney III was named to the Preseason All-Conference USA team, while the Blazer men s basketball team was picked to finish second along with the Houston Cougars in the C-USA race, according to a vote by the league s head coaches. With Delaney s nod, he becomes the first Blazer to earn the preseason award since the 1998 campaign when former UAB great Fred Williams was tabbed to the preseason squad. Delaney s presence on the preseason team comes after a career season when he earned first-team all-league honors in The Decatur, Ga., native led the team and ranked among the top players in the league with an average of 15.5 points (5th), 5.16 assists (2nd) and 1.9 steals (2nd) per game. Delaney also recorded three double-doubles a year ago and earned two conference player of the week accolades. His season was even more outstanding when considering Delaney made a transition from two-guard to the point guard position, a spot he never played in college prior to the start of the season. Entering the campaign, Delaney has accrued 838 career points and needs only 162 points to achieve the feat. In doing so, he will become the first UAB player to reach the milestone since DeMario Eddins recorded his 1,000th point during the campaign. Furthermore, Delaney s name will not only be among the top scorers in history, as he is also approaching the top-10 in steals, as well as free throws made and free throws attempted. The column on the right shows where Delaney ranks among the all-time greats in UAB history. Ho l m e s Ra n k s Am o n g To p Sh o o t e r s In Sc h o o l Hi s t o r y Senior forward Frank Holmes has always been a force inside the paint throughout his UAB career. In fact, Holmes enters the campaign as the team s top shooter in terms of field goal percentage. Not only does his career percentage of 53.5-percent (170-of-318) lead all current UAB players, but it also stands as seventh-best career percentage in school history. The column on the right shows exactly where Holmes stands among the UAB greats in shooting percentage in school lore. Va d e n, Sh a r p e, De l a n e y Ea r n i n g Na t i o n a l Recognition Three Blazers who many expect to rank among the top players in Conference USA are already making headlines across the nation. Senior guard Paul Delaney III, junior guard/ forward Robert Vaden and sophomore forward Walter Sharpe are each receiving praise from around the college basketball world. Delaney is coming off a career season in which he led the team in points (15.5), assists (5.2) and steals (1.9) per game. Furthermore, he averaged 37.1 minutes per game which ranked second on the school s all-time singleseason list. Last season, Delaney captured two C-USA Player of the Week honors for the weeks of Nov. 13 and Dec. 11, marking his first two such awards in his career. Vaden followed coach Mike Davis from the Hoosiers to the Blazers. The versatile wing player had emerged as one of the best players in the Big Ten in just two years. He started all 60 games of his IU career. As a sophomore he averaged 13.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. He s an outstanding long-range shooter. UAB topped national teams such as Duke (10), Memphis (12), Texas A&M (13) and Georgetown (16), among others. Davis signed a total of five players during the recruiting process. Two junior college players are among the five newcomers, including National Junior College Athletic Association (NJ- CAA) All-American forward Reggie Huffman. He joins Ed Berrios, who led his team his team to the NJCAA National Championship game. Also among the newest Blazers are Terrence Roderick (Philadelphia, Pa./Rise Academy), the nation s 11th-best prep player according to HoopScoop, Aaron Johnson (Chicago, Ill./ Hubbard), who is listed among the top five point guards in the city of Chicago and Zisis Sarikopoulos (Athens, Greece/Olympiakos), a seven-footer who is considered as one of the top prep players in all of Greece. The national basketball website also factored transfers Robert Vaden (Indiana), Walter Sharpe (Mississippi State) and Channing Toney (Georgia), many of whom consider as three of the top transfers in the country. UAB Ba s k e t b a l l: Building A Tr a d i t i o n Even though the UAB men s basketball program is entering just its 30th year of existence, the Blazers have found much sucess on the hardwood. Through the first 29 years of existence, UAB has made an impressive 21 postseason appearance, including 13 NCAA Tournaments. Furthermore, the Blazers have amassed 572 wins in program history and boast a.624 winning percentage ( ). Those numbers are good enough to rank among the top programs in the country over the last 29 years. UAB s 13 NCAA appearances ranks tied for 34th most for any Division I basketball program over the last 25 years. The Blazers.624 winning percentage ranks 25th in the nation among all D-I programs. UAB has made three Sweet 16 appearances, including most recently in 2004 when the Blazers upended the tournament s overall No. 1 seed, Kentucky. The Blazers have made four postseason tournaments over the last five season, including three NCAA Tournament appearances in the last four years. UAB boasts 24 seasons where it finished above.500 in the program s 29 years Al l-co n f e r e n c e Bl a z e r s For the second consecutive season, the UAB backcourt earned a nod to the Conference USA All-Conference teams. Guard Paul Delaney III earned first-team accolades, while guard/forward Wen Mukubu got the nod as a member of the third team. It marked the first such awards for both players in their careers. Delaney earned a spot on the first team after earning two C-USA Player of the Week awards and ranking among the league leaders in points, assists, steals and minutes. Mukubu averaged 14.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.4 steals a game, while also shooting 41.9 percent from the floor and 40.0 percent from beyond the arc. De f e n s i v e Sp e c i a l i s t In addition to his first-team all-conference recognition, Paul Delaney III also earned a spot on the league s all-defensive team. Delaney was tenacious on defense throughout last season, leading the team with 59 steals on the campaign. His 1.91 steals per game ranked second in the league last season. 1,000-Mi n u t e Me n Paul Delaney III (1150 minutes/37.1 mpg), Wen Mukubu (1094/36.5) and Lawrence Kinnard (1079/34.8) etched their names in the

5 UAB record books last year. The trio played over 1,000 minutes last year, making it the first time in 14 years that three UAB players on the same team have accomplished the feat. During the campaign, Corey Jackson (1,047), Stanley Jackson (1,043) and Robert Shannon (1,035) all eclipsed the 1,000-minute plateau. Furthermore, they became the first trio in school history to crack the top-10 in minutes per game average during a season in school history. Below is a list of each category, along with the threesome ranks: Single-Season Minutes Played: 3. James Ponder ( ) 1, Paul Delaney III ( ) 1, Carlos Williams ( ) 1,142 Single-Season Minutes Per Game Average: 1. Steve Mitchell ( ) Paul Delaney III ( ) Steve Mitchell ( ) Wen Mukubu ( ) 36.5 T8. Lawrence Kinnard ( ) 34.8 Fr e e Th r o w Wo e s Last season s achilles heel came at the free throw line, as the Blazers missed double-digit free throws 13 times in 31 games during the year. In fact, in nine of its 16 losses last season, UAB missed more free throws than what the final margin of defeat was in the contest. For the year, UAB connected on just 60.9 percent from the charity stripe last season a number that was 317th out of 325 schools nationally. The Blazers free throw percentage dipped to 57.8 percent in league contests. Be n c h St r u g g l e s One of the reasons the Blazers struggled throughout last year was due to the lack of depth. In the loss to Memphis on Feb. 8, UAB was outscored 50-0 in bench points, and 88-4 in the two games against the Tigers last season. The Blazers bench was outscored by an average of almost seven points a game ( /game). UAB reserves were outscored by their counterpart in 25 of their 31 games, including 20 of their final 24 contests. Ho m e v s. Ro a d UAB closed the regular season with a 9-4 record on its home floor, compared to a 5-9 overall record in true road games. Part of the reason for the disparity is the way the Blazers shot the ball at home versus road contests. When playing in Bartow Arena, UAB shot 45.2 percent from the floor, while averaging 72.5 ppg. However, those numbers dropped significantly in road contests. In the 14 true road games last season, the Blazers shot only 33.2 percent from three-point range, while averaging almost 13 points less per game (60.8 ppg). As s i s t Le a d e r Despite playing shooting guard throughout his career, Paul Delaney III made a smooth transition to point guard last season. Delaney finished the season ranked second in C-USA with an average of 5.13 apg. Delaney, who finished the campaign with 160 helpers, reached the century mark in assists for the first time in his career. Furthermore, it marked the seventh consecutive season a Blazer has boasted more than 100 dimes in a season. The last time a UAB player did not get at least 100 assists in a campaign came during the season, when LeAndrew Bass led the team with 90 helpers on the year. Bl u e Co l l a r Pl a y e r s In UAB s double overtime win over Minnesota on Dec. 5, three Blazers played over 45 minutes. Junior guard Paul Delaney III played a team-high and career-high 50 minutes in the contest. He is the only player in school history to have logged 50 minutes in a game. Sophomore forward Lawrence Kinnard played 49 minutes, while senior guard/forward Wen Mukubu tallied 47 minutes. It is the first time in school history three UAB players logged over 45 minutes in the same game. Furthermore, during a five-game stretch from Dec. 2 through Dec. 18, Delaney played a mind-boggling 213 minutes, averaging 42.6 minutes per contest. That five-game stretch consisted of two overtime games, a double-overtime win against Minnesota and an overtime win vs. DePaul. He became the first player in school history to play 95 minutes over a two-game stretch (average of 47.5 minutes per game). The trio finished ranked among the top five in the league in minutes played per game. Paul Delaney III finished second in Conference USA with minutes per contest. Wen Mukubu was fourth with minutes a game, while Lawrence Kinnard ranked fifth, at minutes. Re b o u d n i n g Ad v a n t a g e UAB closed the regular season by outrebounding Tulane during its loss on March 3. It was the 17th time the Blazers outrebounded an opponent last season and was one of the most improved categories from the campaign. UAB outrebounded a total of five opponents during the campaign. Moreover, UAB finished with a -0.3 rebounding difference on the year. In comparison with the campaign, UAB finished the year with an -8.2 disadvantage in the rebounding category. Bat t l i n g Th e Big Ea s t The Blazers had their way against Big East opponents during the campaign. UAB finished with a perfect 3-0 record on the season against one of the top college basketball conferences in the nation. Davis, who was hired as the program s fourth head coach on April 7, 2006, replaced former head coach Mike Anderson, who left UAB to become the head coach at the University of Missouri. Though Davis and his squad struggled during his first season ( ), finishing the year with a overall record, there is still an excitement in the air about UAB basketball heading into the campaign. Davis and his staff logged a lot of miles and long hours to put together what many consider one of the best recruiting classes in program history. The Blazers class is ranked among the top 25 in the nation by many recruiting service websites and magazines, and was picked as high as No. 9 in the nation according to CollegeHoopsUpdate.com. Davis is excited about the upcoming season and future of UAB basketball, and continues to strive toward his goal of a national championship. The Fayette, Ala., native came to UAB from Indiana University, where he served as the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers from While there, he compiled a record. His teams typically have played their best basketball during the postseason, evidenced by Davis record in the month of March and his 7-4 NCAA Tournament mark, including a run to the national championship game in Davis hopes to make the same type of impact at UAB that he did at IU, including the following accomplishments: Davis is the first coach in Indiana history to begin his tenure with three straight 20-plus win seasons and three straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Davis led his team to a postseason appearance in five of his six years at IU, including four NCAA Tournaments. Davis averaged 19.2 wins per season over his sixyear Indiana coaching career. Under Davis tutelage, Indiana defeated 24 ranked opponents. Davis coached three NBA Draft picks. Under Davis, the Hoosiers enjoyed considerable success, including a trip to the 2002 national championship game against Maryland. Although IU lost the contest, 64-52, Davis proved he was ready for big time basketball on a national level. That s exactly what he wants to build at UAB. Named the 25th head coach in Indiana history on Sept. 12, 2000, Davis proved to have the most successful first season of any of his 24 predecessors. His 21 wins were four more than any other first-year IU head coach. His success was not limited to just IU, as his 21 victories ranked him second among firstyear head coaches in the country in Davis, selected as the National Coach of the Year by The Charlotte Observer, was one of just 14 of a total of 319 men s basketball coaches that season who guided a team that did not include a single senior. His team was the highest-ranked seniorless team according to the RPI and just one of two to make the NCAA Tournament. The strong regular season and Big Ten Tournament earned the Hoosiers a No. 20 national ranking and a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the highest by an Indiana team since Though new to the role of head coach, Davis already had contributed significantly to the Indiana program. He spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach with the Hoosiers. His successful recruitment of several of the country s top prep players earned him national recognition at Indiana. In addition to his recruiting success, he has been instrumental in the development of several players including A.J. Guyton, the Big Ten s Most Valuable Player in 2000, Kirk Haston, a first-round NBA selection in 2001 and 2002 Big Ten MVP and consenus second-team All-American Jared Jeffries, who was the 11th overall pick of the 2002 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards. In Davis three seasons as an IU assistant, the Hoosiers compiled a overall record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament all three seasons. Davis came to Indiana after a two-year stint ( ) as an assistant coach under David Hobbs at the University of Alabama. The Crimson Tide posted a record and advanced to the NIT Final Four. He was a standout for four seasons at Alabama and finished his career in the Top 25 on the Crimson Tide s all-time scoring list with 1,211 points. In his first season, he played for the legendary C.M. Newton and then spent his final three years playing under another coaching legend, Wimp Sanderson. He averaged 10.1 points per game for his career and ranks third all-time on the school s steals list with 165. During his four seasons at Alabama, the Crimson Tide posted an record and advanced to two NIT and two NCAA Tournaments. He won Alabama s Hustle Award all four of his seasons in Tuscaloosa and was named to the Southeastern Conference s All-Defensive team his senior year. Following his playing career at Alabama, Davis was a second-round selection of the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1983 NBA Draft. He would spend the next two seasons playing in Switzerland, where he was named to the league s all-star team, and in Italy. He played the season with the Topeka Sizzlers of the Continental Basketball Association. The following season, Davis began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Miles College in Birmingham, Ala. He stayed at Miles for the season and then coached in Venezuela, directing the country s national team for two summers as well as professional teams in that country. During his CBA coaching career, Davis tutored several eventual NBA players such as Ennis Whatley, Derrick Phelps, Bardo, John Lucas, Roy Tarpley, Fred Roberts, James, Elston Turner, Cedric Ball, Walter Bond, David Wesley and Jaren Jackson. Davis was born September 15, 1960, in Fayette, Ala., and is married to the former Tamilya Floyd. The couple has a seven-year-old son, Antoine. Davis is also the father of 21-year-old son, Mike, Jr., who is a redshirt junior on the UAB men s basketball team, and a daughter Lateesha, 27. He earned a degree in telecommunications from Thomas Edison College.
