1 Tribune Page 1 SNOHOMISH football preview One heartbeat, one team is new Panthers coach s view By DOUG RAMSAY contributing writer There is a new head coach at this season and with him a new philosophy in team play. Joey Hammer, a 1998 High School graduate, became only the fourth head coach for the Panthers in over half a century. Following high school, Hammer had a short college football career at Whitworth University in Spokane, then returned to where he began coaching at the middle school level in In 2013, he moved up to a high school assistant position in a two-year stint at before heading over to where he served as the defensive coordinator under Bearcat head coach Michael Bumpus. Only three other head coaches have preceded Hammer in the Panther football program in the past 50 years. The legendary Dick Armstrong coached the team from 1963 to 1994 and was followed by the school s current athletic director Mark Perry. Perry helmed the Panthers until 2012 when Kai Smalley took over. Smalley directed the Panthers for five years until he resigned after the season last year. Hammer brings an enthusiasm and passion for the game he s instilled into his players during pre-season training. He also brings an intensity and a philosophy of team unity that was driven into him as a young player by both coaches Armstrong and Perry. It s that philosophy that he hopes will propel the Panthers into the state tournament in November. The Panthers have had a series of losing seasons and have not been to State in 10 years. With the team motto of one heartbeat, Hammer is bringing back the philosophy of total team effort and not just relying on any one individual s effort. I can never say there is just one or two guys, Hammer said when asked who will be the standout players on this year s team. Its got to be all hearts on deck, he said. With the 11 guys on the field offense, defense, it takes every heartbeat. From the sideline, coaches, fans, community, everyone, it s not just one person, it s all is one, and all for the team. Ham- mer said. One page from the playbook that Hammer removed is the Panther tradition of keeping the ball on the ground and playing an all-out, nose-tonose running game. It won t be the old 46 power as Coach Armstrong would have, or the 32 trap as Coach Perry would have said over and over, Hammer said. We will be a variable of things because you got to make their defense work for it. With seven teams in the Wesco South division, s schedule has little room for non-conference play. However, the Panthers will start the season with two non-conference games including the now traditional cross-valley match-up against fellow School District rival Glacier Peak Grizzlies in week two of the season on Sept schedule Doug Ramsay file photo at Marysville-Pilchuck vs. Glacier Peak vs. Shorewood at (5 p.m. game) at Shorecrest vs. Edmonds-Woodway vs. Lynnwood (homecoming game) at Meadowdale (8 p.m. game) GO PANTHERS! 2 Tribune Page 2 MONROE football preview Bearcats training hard for more wins after top 17 season By SAMUEL KETCHEM intern The Bearcats are back after a strong 10-2 season last year that led to the postseason State quarterfinals. That ratio placed the school second in the district, and shows the possibility of an incredibly strong year. Coach Mike Bumpus joined the team in February 2015 after playing as a wide receiver for the Washington State University Cougars and for the Seattle Seahawks, British Columbia Lions and Spokane Shock as a pro. He also started Elite Training Academy, a fitness area and a football training center. The 4A team is heading into a competitive nine-game season, but Bumpus said they are definitely prepared for it. Practices, which began Aug. 15, have gone exceptionally well despite some setbacks with the high heat and poor air quality. We ve had lots of trouble with weather, so we ve been working indoors mostly on technique and things like that. But overall, we re right where we need to be, Bumpus said. Bumpus said juniors Blake Ryber and George Kelley are just a few of the many potential stars to look out for. Ryber, a 6-foot-1-inch, 200-pound running back is set to make an impression. Kelley is 5-foot-11-inches and is a running back and defensive end Through superior training and team cohesiveness, Bumpus has high hopes for where the team may go. Bumpus said: I just want them to play good football. Hopefully we get into a good position for the playoffs and farther. But overall, they ve been training hard and that s good. That s how they ll get places. They will play their first game against the Eastlake High School Wolves of Sammamish at Eastlake on Aug. 31. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. The first home game is Sept. 14 against the powerhouse Lake Stevens Vikings. 3 Tribune Page 3 GLACIER PEAK football preview Grizzlies hope to mix it up among 4A s dominant teams By DOUG RAMSAY contributing writer With a few minor changes and three strong returning players, as a team the Glacier Peak Grizzlies think this will be the year they can take down the dominant Bearcats and Lake Stevens Vikings for the Wesco 4A title. While the Grizzlies dominated the play against the other five Wesco 4A teams, Glacier Peak has never beat or Lake Stevens since moving into the 4A division. Both teams were able to outscore the Grizzlies by over 50 points each in games last year. This will be Nick Bender s third year at head coach. The Grizzlies finished 5-5 in 2016 and improved to 6-4 last year. Following the team s first on-field practice of the season earlier this month, Bender discussed how tough the schedule is for the team this year. The Grizzlies will open the season with two non-conference games against Wesco 3A powerhouses Edmonds- Woodway and to give the Grizzlies a big challenge right at the start. The Grizzlies won t see Lake Stevens until week six of the season when they play in Lake Stevens. They face for homecoming on Oct. 19. Ayden Ziomas is returning for his fourth season as quarterback. The 5-foot-11 senior completed more than 2,500 yards in passing last year and threw 29 touchdown passes. He also led the team in rushing with 520 yards. Senior Evan Mannes will again be a go-to guy for Ziomas this year. As a 6-foot- 4 receiver, Mannes can pull down just about anything Ziomas throws his way. Mannes had eight touchdown catches for the Grizzlies last year. Also returning is senior Ma ake Fifita who plays at both offensive and defensive line positions Rounding out the team s top performers for this year is sophomore Patrick McKenzie, who saw play in several varsity games toward the end of last season. McKenzie will anchor the wide receiver and d e f e n s i v e back positions. But he said not to call this a rebuilding year. The team will definetly still play to win. We see it as being prepared. In addition, because these seniors now will get playing time, he said he doesn t have to unravel tendencies and habits taught by the past coach. The nowgone senior class from last year means a new No. 1 quarterback and new players. Both senior quarterbacks last year are gone. Only Eisenkraft the kicker is the continuance from the old team. Quarterback Ollis, The Seagulls enter 2018 with a new coach and while coming off a 7-3 winning season, the 3A team is restocking its player roster. New coach Dave Coldiron came from California with over 20 years of coaching experience. He moved to County to be closer to family and in his quest he seriously weighed his options. s offer won him over, he said, because it has a good team who had great support from the administration. Coldiron can give a shortlist of superstar seniors: Running back and linebacker Christian Balmer, lineman Anthony Amundsen, quarterback Ethan Ollis and kicker David Eisenkraft. We have a lot of talented seniors but they didn t get a lot of playing time last year because of a very seniorlisted at 6-foot-2-inches and 180 pounds, is slipping into his new team leadership role easily, Coldiron said, and he understands the playbacks well. Coldiron plans to use zone blocking for offense strategies. Zone blocking patterns use two guys to double up on defense linemen to part the field for offense runs. Coldiron s four seasons at Mira Monte High School in Bakersfield, California ended with him stepping down with a 4-35 record, including 0-9 in 2017, The Bakersfield Californian newspaper reported. Past coach Doug Trainor, who oversaw a record in over three seasons, left to go travel the world, he told another paper. The first game for the Seagulls is the annual Battle of Broadway against the Cascade Bruins on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
